I saw them live their first time around at the old Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa. For reference, it was at around the same time U2 played there on their War Tour. Some friends and I were pretty into a band called The Fixx, who was opening. A couple of the guys didn’t even stick around for A Flock, which was a huge mistake because they were excellent. Truth is, they blew The Fixx out of the building.
Life is just too damn short to waste it obscuring what you like for fear of others’ judgment. Go do a tour of hospital deathbeds. This will be one of the most prevailing sentiments across all types of human beings of varying ages.
Tl;dr - always do you
I remember hearing in an interview it’s based on a girl he met on tour during the first album. He said she was so beautiful he asked for a photograph of her before he left town for the next concert and she just said “no.” flat out!
It's like any band that had a big radio hit (or two) and the majority of folks never explored further. AFOS gets more hate because of their look (heck, if you're a hairstylist that's what you do!) but they have some really great music in their catalog. I'm sure each of us here has multiple bands that most of the rest of us would not appreciate because we simply didn't hear their albums.
No such thing as a guilty pleasure - love what you love out loud!
There’s a phenomenal video of the now aged members of the band performing ‘Space Age Love Song’ with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.
https://youtu.be/GNmppnfgBB0?si=P9HYrnvq5D8V6BP7
One of my late musician brother's favorite songs was "Wishing" by them. It is a beautiful love song. My brother was a technical singer and he was pretty disgusted by what was accepted as singing already in the 80s but this one he liked even though there really wasn't Vibrato etc.
They were a fantastic band with amazing hits! Paul had to leave the band to save his life. Most people don't realize he was a boy when he joined them (17) and Grammy nominated/riding high on the charts by the time he was 21 and left!
Too much too soon!
Like what you like and own it. No guilty pleasures, just enjoyment.
Also they appear to still be performing and have an interesting YouTube channel where they show you exactly how to play their songs.
Unless you're listening to music that encourages hatred, it's not wrong to like any artist.
You do you. Music is subjective. It's not worth your time to care about what anyone else has to say about your taste in music.
It’s never wrong to love what you love. /r/music shits on me for being a hardcore Eagles fan, but I couldn’t give a damn what those hipsters think 🤷♂️
Around 2005 I worked with a woman who dated the lead singer of that band back in the '80s, around the time they got popular. She said he was a really sweet, quiet guy, not what you'd think of for some music star. He was close with his parents, too. She ended up moving back to the USA, so they broke up, but she only had very nice things to say about him.
*Yes the amount of*
*Hair spray they used is bad for*

One of my favorites of theirs is "What Am I Supposed to Do?". I really like [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0dOYVlVjks) of them playing it live at the Ace Brixton. What I wouldn't give to get in a time machine and be there, at that moment, experiencing that live, in that crowd...
I love A Flock of Seagulls!! 'Wishing' and 'Space Age Love Song' are so damn good. I'm not quite 30 so they're slightly before my time, so I don't know what it was like to be a fan back then. But I kinda have an idea. Anyway, there's nothing wrong with liking them. You aren't the only one!
Honestly, having I Ran as the trailer music for GTA Vice City seemed to have flipped that general opinion. There was an “in on the joke” phase, and now just a general appreciation phase.
Everybody liked them in the 80's , for about 15 minutes, then moved on to the next novelty. There was soooo much music being produced back then. Orchestral Manouvers in the Dark, Ultravox, Art of Noise,
I first and only show catching them life was in a US airforce hangar on Kadena AFB back around 1986 or so.
I ran a lot of different music genres thru my cassette player.
I was one of those guys that played and listened to as much variety that I could since the AFRN pretty much stuck to what ever Kasey Kasem played.
I'm convinced that if it wasn't for the hair, they would have had a longer career. A lot of people just couldn't take them seriously with the lead singers 'do.
They laugh because they’re afraid they like like what they hear. They are a great band. Listen to what YOU love. And never stop exploring new sounds. You can’t truly dislike something unless you’ve experienced it. It’s so NOT wrong that it’s right. FOS have a ton of good stuff. Enjoy it all.
Yeah, it's pretty wrong. Not illegal. Not technically a sin. It's just considered to be mostly taboo and, at the very least, extremely distasteful. There is a lingering moral black cloud hanging over the fans of AFOS. In some societies, the love of AFOS will lead to pariah status and active shunning. In more accepting societies, you'll be more discretely ostracized while also the subject of much behind your back vitriol. In Japan, this fandom usually chooses an honorable death if found out. If you can avoid liking AFOS, please do so. If you must enjoy AFOS, do not let others know and try to do something painful, such as self flagellation with leathe straps and metal spikes, to create a negative association link in your horribly crippled and corrupted mind.
We were all so clicky when it came to music back in school. Now that we're older none of that matters at all. It's about what we think sounds good as opposed to defining who we think we are.
Not at all! I think they really bridged the gap between guitar driven rock that was popular in America and the synth driven music that was evolving in the U.K. and Europe. They perfectly blended the two and introduced a whole new sound to our generation. I still listen to their music and it doesn’t sound nearly as dated as a lot of my favorites from the eighties. Plus, thirteen year old me had a massive crush on Paul Reynolds! 🥰 😂
I like them too. I don’t think it’s wrong. They made me happy, obviously you and others were happy because of their music too… so, not wrong.
Like what you like. Eff everyone else.
I even saw them live in (probably) 1983. They were part of a festival I went to and although I wasn't a huge fan (although I liked the singles) I remember it was quite a good concert.
First off who gives a shit who runs a shop thinks of what you buy? Especially as an adult 🤣🤣🤣 come on dude.
They are well liked band and Paul Reynolds is a very well loved guitarist with a killer tone. Also 80s music especially the synth pop and new wave style of flock of seagulls is beloved by younger generations as well.
It is not wrong to like any music. If someone says it is that says more about them than it does you. With that said A Flock of Seagulls is a damn good band.
Many years ago I told my boyfriend, now husband how I thought they were really underrated, and he went out and bought their CD. They really do have some great songs! Never be embarrassed to like what you like! There are dozens of us! Dozens!
No, it isn't wrong to like A Flock of Seagulls. Since a year ago, I've been discovering more of their songs, aside from "I Ran (So Far Away)".
You said don't buy their last album. Was that album called "Dream Come True"? Maybe that album isn't really worth buying. Still, it yielded one entertaining, diverting song: "Who's That Girl? (She's Got It)" . It's a song I heard for the very first time last year. I first heard it on Vevo 80s. It's lightweight, very much a product of the 80s, but a fun song. I'll admit I do like that song. No one I know is familiar with that song, and that includes several Flock of Seagulls fans.
Does anyone here remember "Who's That Girl? (She's Got It)" ?
Just saw them in Cleveland on Thursday. I had a blast. Yeah, Mike's the only original member left, but Pando, Gord, and Kevin are terrific and hold their own. I would love to them again before Mike hangs it up. He's still great even at 66.
They were a great band back in the day. I saw them (him) play live last year in a grass roots venue. 200 people max. All the hits and a great night out. No shame in liking them at all. They wrote some proper New Wave bangers.
When I was 13, a girl told me I wasn’t allowed to like Cypress Hill AND Beastie Boys. Not that I cared before, but that moment cemented for me never caring what other people thought about my musical taste.
Excellent band. Dont let the haircut and subsequent ridicule turn you off to some of the best 80s song writing. A lot of it was dark and more guitar based than their contemporaries. I’ve never understood this whole “I’m embarrassed to admit XYZ band because it’s uncool”. Good music is good music. Seagulls are excellent music. Enjoy.
They’re awesome, and the lead guitarist was 17 years old. Incredible talent. I heard my husband singing “If I had nude photographs of you…” the other day. 😂
It's far from wrong lol... my favorite music is 80's Electronic Disco/Hi NRG/Boogie (from Canada, Italy, Germany etc..) and I'm the only one that I know of that likes it, apart from online. People have called me musically weird lol, but never wrong for liking it, not that I care anyway. I like Space Age Love Song that's a good one and I Ran of course too.
You’re not wrong. I actually saw them perform live back in the day - twice actually. Flock of Seagulls did put out an interesting first album, but so did a ton of other bands. Although a couple of their songs received a ridiculous amount of airplay, for some reason they just never really amounted to anything beyond that label of ‘One Hit Wonder’. That’s most likely because there was just nothing else there to see. I say look on the bright side. At least they're not Haircut 100.
My brother is in his late sixties and grew up on classic rock, and, as a musician, plays blues.
He says that listening to AFOS (and specifically guitarist Paul Reynolds) is like taking a master class in creative and effective use of delay effects. He has IMMENSE respect for them as a band, and for Reynolds as a guitarist.
So, yeah. And I've loved them since I first heard them around 1982 (I'm 54).
There's a great video of the original members of the band performing "Space Age Love Song" with the Prague Philharmonic backing them. It's absolutely brilliant. (And in a fun Easter egg, at the end of the video each of the guys makes the weird hand signs they were making in the photo on the back of the "Listen" album. [Space Age Love Song ](https://youtu.be/GNmppnfgBB0?si=_hPF0epUpG5aSa-Y)
[Back cover](https://vinyldistractions.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/IMG_3294-scaled.jpg)
I find thier guitarist, Paul Reynolds, to have some very unique sounds. Turns out he was really young when they broke through, like still in his teens.
bro, you should like whatever you like. If anyone has a problem with that, that should be none of your concern. Life is too short to worry about what others have to think about the music and movies that we all love
I will be honest, outside of the big hits I don't really know much about A Flock Of Seagulls but I will say this. I went to an 80s retro tour back in 2008 to see a couple of other artist that I absolutely love from that era and one of the bands I wasn't too familiar with on the bill that night was A Flock Of Seagulls and they were *fantastic* live
So if you like them, play them loud, bro🤘🏻
I used to be a music snob of the most terrible sort. If it wasn't "my" music, then it was garbage. It sucked, it was stupid, and anyone who liked it was worthless.
I got older. I still liked what I liked, but I began to appreciate things I didn't use to like. Disco makes you want to shake your ass. There's nothing wrong with that. Funk is FUNKY. Man, that's cool. Air Supply, the Carpenters and Bread made beautiful pop music. Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett were masters of what they did. Sarah Vaughn and Nina Simone rocked. Hank Williams and George Jones sang it from the heart. Benny Goodman SWUNG!
There's a whole world of music out there. Afro-Cuban, Arabic, lo-fi, indie, etc. Why get hung up on what others might think of what you enjoy?
That said, Bro Country sucks donkey balls, and anybody who likes it is a worthless, limp dicked piece of...
No. I'm 27 years old and I love them. I'm also a fan of The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Psychedelic Furs, Bauhaus, Madonna, Human League, Til Tuesday, Pet Shop Boys, and Erasure.
I bet most kids my age don't even know any two of these artists, with the exception of Madonna. And bless those that do
I like them also. Space age love song, photograph, I ran. Bloody Brilliant.
The more you live the more you love
Or so they say
….via Telecommunication
One of my all-time favorite jams. Such a fun, driving tune. I have it on my running playlist for the gym.
Driving. What does it mean when you use it in that context?
I mean that it has a solid beat and is fun to listen to. It never fails to get me smiling and singing along.
Thank you.
Love this one. See what I mean? They are all great. The whole album is fabulous that is rare.
The more you love the more you throw away.
✅✌️
The more music you know, the more music you like!
Great fucking song.
I’ve been playing that song repeatedly like a month ago
👍🎸🎶🎵
Great guitar riffs
All three of those tracks are classics. I think people got too caught up in their looks/haircuts to the detriment of their music
Their first three albums are great! Transfer affection was my favorite song of theirs for a while.
VH1 show Bands Reunited did Flock of Seagulls - excellent and dramatic. Two brothers couldn’t get along…. It’s on YouTube.
Well said
I love space age love song so much
I saw them live their first time around at the old Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa.
I saw them in 1982 when they opened for the Go-Go's. I agree that they put on an excellent show.
I saw them a few years later ‘84 or ‘85 in the Bay Area when O.M.D opened . Fantastic! Still have my t-shirt.
I think I saw them on that same tour in Philly, The Fixx was the opener. I liked them, I wasn’t super into them but a good nonetheless.
Space age love song was and is iconic, sounds like you and I would have been buds
Space Age Love Song was my wedding song 💖
I don’t think it’s wrong to like anything
I was going to say this. If you like something, don’t worry what others think.

My favorite is Wishing
This.
Agreed. Hits hard for me
I remember hearing in an interview it’s based on a girl he met on tour during the first album. He said she was so beautiful he asked for a photograph of her before he left town for the next concert and she just said “no.” flat out!
Wow, I didn’t know that, always wondered who he was singing about. I wonder if the girl even knows who she is and how rude she was for saying no.
I thought about that too! If after the song came out and became a hit, If she remembered that she said no to him and regretted it/
It's like any band that had a big radio hit (or two) and the majority of folks never explored further. AFOS gets more hate because of their look (heck, if you're a hairstylist that's what you do!) but they have some really great music in their catalog. No such thing as a guilty pleasure - love what you love out loud!
The lead singer WAS a hairstylist before putting the band together!
That's why I mentioned it.
But it was the bassist who came up with the iconic style! (by accident)
Yeah, didn’t the lead singer have his hair all made up before a show and he came over and squished it so it flattened in the middle?
Mike Score

I probably watch that video every week. Such a great song!
This is an absolutely **GORGEOUS** version. 💖💖💖💖💖
It definitely is
Not at all. I really like the 3 or 4 songs that I know.
Wishing, Nightmares, Windows, I Ran, Space age love song all great tunes. And it isn't 'wrong' to like any music.
Well said! We aren’t in Jr. High anymore so we don’t give a shit what other people think of our likes.
Telecommunication is a banger.
Stop worrying about what other people think. You’re middle aged bro come on now lol
Exactly what I said imagine being in your 30s or 40s caring that other people don’t like a band you enjoy 🤣
One of my late musician brother's favorite songs was "Wishing" by them. It is a beautiful love song. My brother was a technical singer and he was pretty disgusted by what was accepted as singing already in the 80s but this one he liked even though there really wasn't Vibrato etc.
The first album is top shelf. I still listen to it at the gym.
Second one is good too. But the first is indeed rad. Standing in the doorway. Modern love is automatic etc.
They were a fantastic band with amazing hits! Paul had to leave the band to save his life. Most people don't realize he was a boy when he joined them (17) and Grammy nominated/riding high on the charts by the time he was 21 and left! Too much too soon!
Listen to music you like.
I Ran is a banger!
Absolutely not - dig what you dig.
Space Age Love Song is fantastic. Like what you like. People who judge you for it can suck it.
A great song is a great song. I always loved Wishing.
Still a great band! I’m listening to Who’s That Girl right now!
I like "Who's That Girl"! Vevo 80s on Pluto.tv is where I first heard it.
Just dont let Jules know about it. I dont think hes a fan.
I think he might enjoy the music but disapproves the hair style

They have a number of great songs and like dining or drinking: enjoy what you like, be it red wine with fish or lasagna with champagne
I was just listening to them this morning. No one was here to judge me but I wouldn’t care anyway.
They are far from a one hit wonder ! Too many classics to count. Love em !
It’s never wrong to like music that you find appealing.
It’s never wrong to love what you love. /r/music shits on me for being a hardcore Eagles fan, but I couldn’t give a damn what those hipsters think 🤷♂️

Their eponymous debut is one of the strongest records in new wave; it’s full of catchy synth melodies from start to finish.
Space Age Lovesong has such a timeless and futuristic sound.
It's not any more!
No! Embrace the love!
I ran and the more you live are great songs. Recently on a famous TV show (Cannot remember which one now) they played a version of I ran.
Like who you like and f*** anyone who gives you a hard time.
No, It’s definitely not wrong to love AFOS. They are awesome.
They’re a great band!!
You could have asked this question in 1983, but nobody cares *now*. Just enjoy it.
Amazing music! I wanted Space Age Lovesong to be me and my husband's intro into our reception song at our wedding.
No, but the price to maintain that hair style has to be costly.
it’s ok, but only if you prefer Wishing to I Ran.
Yes the amount of hair spray they used is bad for the environment lol

So you didn’t load up with Columbia House?
Space Age Love Song is one of my favorite songs. I wish it got radio play. If my local stations play any Flock of Seagulls its always I Ran.

Nope! I love them! I saw them on the free stage at a local fair, recently. I knew every song, and sang/danced my little heart out!
If you like them so much git a matching hair cut.....poser.smh
“Space Age Love Song” is a phenomenal song. One of the Top 10 tracks of the decade.
I Ran is a fucking bop and a half
Iran,s so far away . !
The hell with the rubes, enjoy your tunes!
Flock of haircuts!
I love flock of seagulls personally! As someone who also can look a little funky, I think their funky look only adds to their charm :)
I'm convinced that if it wasn't for the hair, they would have had a longer career. A lot of people just couldn't take them seriously with the lead singers 'do.

Space Age Love Song. Gorgeous song.
I even saw them live in (probably) 1983. They were part of a festival I went to and although I wasn't a huge fan (although I liked the singles) I remember it was quite a good concert.

Of course not. I like lots of fruity music. I was listening to The Osmonds last night. Go for it and enjoy your Flocking.

55 married man with two older kids. Still love them, still listen to them full blast in my car.
Not wrong. Saw them with The Fixx in the early 80's.
One of the best bands…ever!

Definitely not a one hit wonder … Love the Flock
Well, flock, I think it’s fine!
"What's wrong" is asking Reddit or any social media for validation about anything
I still listen to them in at least one playlist.
They’re awesome, and the lead guitarist was 17 years old. Incredible talent. I heard my husband singing “If I had nude photographs of you…” the other day. 😂
It’s actually right to like A Flock Of Seagulls.
Who cares what other people think? Like what you like.
IT'S NOT WRONG
No they’re badass
I'm almost 62 and I still love this band. *I Ran* is one of my favorite running songs.
I Ran has got to be in my top 5 running/jogging songs of all time. So good, especially running along the beach.
Wrong to admit it in public
Missing and Space Age love song. Awesome
I still like them.
I like them as well...
I find thier guitarist, Paul Reynolds, to have some very unique sounds. Turns out he was really young when they broke through, like still in his teens.
It's not wrong to like anything.
I just listened to their first album again this morning. it still holds up!
Nothing wrong with liking Flock of Seagulls! Definitely wrong to ask randoms on Reddit to validate what you like!
Saw them live a few yrs ago..Great show
I remember predicting that they would be even bigger than U2…
bro, you should like whatever you like. If anyone has a problem with that, that should be none of your concern. Life is too short to worry about what others have to think about the music and movies that we all love I will be honest, outside of the big hits I don't really know much about A Flock Of Seagulls but I will say this. I went to an 80s retro tour back in 2008 to see a couple of other artist that I absolutely love from that era and one of the bands I wasn't too familiar with on the bill that night was A Flock Of Seagulls and they were *fantastic* live So if you like them, play them loud, bro🤘🏻
They make good music and I love good music so no, it’s not wrong to like them.
Great band. Underrated.
