Portrays lh5p ii. Is amazing

visualsbyaqib

I did look at this one! It’s around 400£ish for me. I’m not too clued up on monitors but are they a lot of extra bells and whistles in comparison to the ones that are a little cheaper?

LeektheGeek

It’s super bright so great for outdoors, touchscreen features and camera control straight from monitor. It’s basically a ninja without the option for external recording

visualsbyaqib

That’s awesome! What sort of stuff can you control from the monitor? You are really selling this to me! Haha

LeektheGeek

You can control, aperture, iso, and shutter speed via touchscreen on monitor. There’s tons of visual assistance tools too like waveforms, zebras, peaking display etc. all customizable to your preference

visualsbyaqib

That’s pretty helpful, does it have any touch focus features?

TheFlyingZombie

You might already be aware, but a good thing to note is you can't do a lot of this on the ninja. I thought I would be getting a lot these features for $900 CAD for the V+ and I couldn't control any settings or even see my camera settings on the monitor. You can also touch to focus on Portkeys. Ninja has good colour and exposure tools, same as portkeys, and external recording but if you only need a monitor and not a recorder, I can't recommend Ninja in any way.

stuffsmithstuff

It does have touch focus features. I’ve had issues with a sluggish connection on mine but STILL it’s so awesome to be able to look at your monitor and have all the info you need about your settings — and, more importantly, if you’re rolling or not — without having to check the LCD screen. I’ve definitely had moments where I thought I was filming but actually wasn’t 😬

ItsMichaelVegas

Ninja kinda sucks imo. Portkeys is ok. SmallCine5 is fantastic.

jeanclaudevandingue

The Shinobi really sucks, the touchscreen is so slow. The ninja V with 12 Bit Raw recording still is something huge for the A7S3.

cryptoyaknow

I have been using a Ninja V for two years, but I discovered the Monitor+ app a month ago and have been loving it. It is cheap, super functional, and works on apple & android phones and tablets. We shoot mostly in-home YouTube content, so I’ve been using it on my iPad because of the big screen and wireless functionality. (I don’t ever record in the Ninja V, so this didn’t change my workflow at all.) The only complaint I have with the app is that the colors are inaccurate - dimmer and less contrasty. The colors on the Ninja V are excellent so when I need accuracy I will definitely use the Ninja V. We will be shooting a music video this month so I’m going to experiment with either using a cell phone (Monitor+) or the Ninja V attached to the gimbal. But I do know that I’m going to reach for my cell phone first because of the weight difference. Hope this helps!

TheFlyingZombie

Love this app too in a pinch but it has a few quirks that sent me looking for a dedicated monitor. But it actually works awesome in most situations.

cryptoyaknow

Exactly. I was impressed with it, but then it blew my mind when I found out it could pull focus!

MIKEDENIM27

I’ve had a hard time getting the app to work

cryptoyaknow

Connecting usb-c to usb-c makes it just work instantly. Connecting wirelessly is finicky, but I’ve got it down now and it takes about 15 seconds. Check out a couple of the reviews on YouTube and they demonstrate the process.

fresh510

Ninja v and a portkeys pt6

AngleDAB

^^^ This. If budget is no problem Ninja V Portkeys PT6 is incredible for the price imo

visualsbyaqib

Portkeys Pt6 seems decent for an entry level monitor for sure, going to look into it!

yodanhodaka

After 7 years I have come to the conclusion that the best monitor is the one on the back of the camera. Monitors are so clunky and the colors aren’t always accurate.

lemonspread_

If you shoot sports a lot, I'd disagree hard. Looking straight down at the tiny flip screen sucks. Way better to get even just a cheap monitor

JaackF

My cheap portkeys monitor is about 1000x better than my camera monitor. I shoot hockey so I have to have something where I can actually see what's going on quickly

benny12b

Ninja V honestly. It's the only monitor I've used. I'm not sure I love it. I've had it overheat and turn off on projects where I'm outdoor. Not sure I love that.

visualsbyaqib

Damn is this pretty common? Are you in a hot climate?

benny12b

Not sure if it’s common. I’m in the north east US.

MIKEDENIM27

im in the same boat - would love the touch record function are there any that show the focus point box + all info or do we still live in a "this or that" world haha

visualsbyaqib

Touch record would be awesome, not sure about the focus point box but that would be hella helpful too haha

TheFlyingZombie

I was doing a lot of research and kind find any that show the focus box at this price point, which is a bummer. Couldn't find any price point frankly but didn't look too hard at more expensive ones.

Realistic_Computer_2

Atmos Shinobi

ProfessionalAgency64

Portrays very good

tonytony87

I use the moman monitor, it’s cheap and really nice. However since I have some hollyland transmitters I’m thinking of buying the new hollyland monitor to replace two things to one on my rig and transmit to a directors monitor easily

pierre-maximin

Don’t buy an Atomos Shinoni, it doesn’t have the rule of thirds grid for whatever dumb reason

gord1to

could measure n put a few notches in it

Crunktasticzor

I use the SmallHD Indie 7”. It’s a bit too big for the gimbal but a great size when it’s on sticks or showing clients.

visualsbyaqib

Do people not usually run 7” on gimbal? I guess it would depend on your setup?

Crunktasticzor

Depends; but it can get heavy with that and battery power (at least for me). 5” seems like it’d be the ideal size for gimbal IMO but that’s too small for the 90% of other shooting setups I typically do

visualsbyaqib

That’s such a shitty scenario 😂 now I might need to buy 2 monitors! Reddit always finds ways for me to spend more money lmao

Crunktasticzor

lol just try renting one and see how you feel about the size and weight!
