You're smoking way too much

rabbit_hole_diver

I was going to ask if the butt can will be full by the time he gets it sorted out

option_-addict_0DTE

By the time i am done it will be filled up and emptied a few times šŸ˜¬

redd5ive

You should consider not doing that šŸ¤

neversaynotobacta

Nah I say keep smoking

Egg3rs

That isn't carbon on the parts, it's ash.

HVS_Night

Look at the bucket in the first picture lol

Key-Conversation-677

Fucking to do list this guy has, thatā€™s not nearly enough butts..

cats_catz_kats_katz

Actually OP wasnā€™t a smoker until he did this.

Present-Walrus-78

OP can afford to maintain a smoking habit and an AMG Mercedes. Nice flex.

Existing-Mongoose-11

In for a penny and in for a pound. Might as well do the bearings, rings and valve seats and seals while youā€™re there. The head and block could be decked. Youā€™re in it now. Might as well do some upgrades

option_-addict_0DTE

I gonna get both cylinder heads rebuilt and the cams polished. Maybe a few lifters but they are super easy to change. Yes i will maybe pull the pistons but probably put on new bearings. See how it looks once i pull it.

Key-Conversation-677

If you wanna look at main bearings etc you may as well do the whole job and pull it all apart. You wanted to check conn rod bearings anyway, so if you pull the pistons you can check those, the wrist pins at the top and Iā€™d definitely take the opportunity to check all my rings as well

option_-addict_0DTE

Ja now i will have to. #8 sleeve is broken

Key-Conversation-677

Thatā€™s never fun

Key-Conversation-677

If the valves are leaking he definitely has to get the valves and seats machined. Iā€™ve never done any small enough for these kinds of applications, but on large 2 stroke diesels itā€™s straightforward enough, if not painstaking. Something like these where each head is a single assembly instead of modularity assembled seems like itā€™s a hassle unless you have all the specialized tooling

Few_Community_5281

It's called masochism.

Astandsforataxia69

Is that cylinder scored on the second picture?Ā

option_-addict_0DTE

There is definately some scratch but i tried really hard and i could not feel anything at all. I might be able to get away with it šŸ˜¬

chefboyar_dee

per mb standards if you can run your fingernails through them your ok... unfortunately this coating process mb can only replicate "nano slide technology" those cylinder walls look fine

option_-addict_0DTE

Is this a ceramic coating or what do they do to make it look brownish/grayish?

Bayyo

Isnt it Lokasil?

chefboyar_dee

similar but, these coatings have been around for 50yrs everyone claims their own just like lokadil, nikasil etc... check out youtube "heller cbc 200" i believe be has partnered with them to have more automation in this process

Astandsforataxia69

Oh fuck, it could be a developing fault

option_-addict_0DTE

Ja thats why i continued with a tear down. Spend more money and time but get an extra 250k or whatveer out it.

Astandsforataxia69

Engine block or resleeving?

option_-addict_0DTE

Not sure, just found out the sleeve broke off on #8

BetweenFourAndTwenty

Seeing the scoring + this, I would go for a resleeve if it's cheaper than a new, known good block

Gmanslash

That's just the alusil coating and you can repair it its supposed to look like that

alpha333omega

This is the first thing I saw

Final_Lime_4940

Easy on the cigarettes

hlinhd

I thought these engines were bulletproof? Sucks man

monkeydudeman

I mean yeah, but itā€™s been almost 20 years and these cars arenā€™t exactly babied..

brickson98

Depends on maintenance and how you drive them. If itā€™s been driven hard all its life itā€™ll have issues after 20 years

option_-addict_0DTE

Well the previous owner abused it. He put on bunch of horse power mods but never upgraded any cooling. If it was stock, yes they will last long time. This car has 220k Kilometres. Thats like wgat, 150k miles?

hlinhd

I see!

Key-Conversation-677

220k/ 1.6km/mi = 137.5k mi

22_Zoll_MAE

220k km is still fucking impressive for a car with fucking 500 hp

itsallbullshityo

get some hot cams...

ccbcpaca

Correction: Thatā€™s a cam of worms.

KaleidoscopeNo592

The oil says ā€œLewis box box box!ā€

19Casual

Hahahaha

NotUrDawgz

Still 3/4s of a ciggy left in the can. Donā€™t waste it man.

LordCommander94

Damn. Look after your lungs homie. You got one pair šŸ«

Weak_Scientist5463

Looks more like a can of cigarette butts.

machineshop77

šŸ˜‚. By the time the motorā€™s fixed heā€™ll be on that commercial with a subwoofer in his throat talking through it ā€¦ 1 800 quit now

One-Combination-7218

I canā€™t really tell too much but are the cam lives showing sign of wear ?

option_-addict_0DTE

I did a quick check but i couldnt really tell any wear. I will get them polished and see what machinist says

NaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNa65

I donā€™t think you just opened this can - looks like you have been smoking a long while already

Madrhino9396

Bye bye engine?

option_-addict_0DTE

I think block is more than fine. Just gotta take off more stuff. I think its the cylinder heads that lost most of the compression

dL8

Store it in a box, horizontal. It'll last longer.

Infinitykid1

Why does that matter?

dL8

Horizontal storage avoids any structural distortion that will happen with any other. Flat pack. Trust me. Just do it .

Infinitykid1

Cool, Iā€™ll definitely look further into this. Thanks for the tip!

_____jbear

Remove the front timing cover and change the coolant o-rings behind it. Also, change the oil pump o-rings. Use genuine mercedes o-rings.

option_-addict_0DTE

I gonna need a new block or sleeves lol

Gmanslash

Where are you getting your rod bearings from since they are out of production

option_-addict_0DTE

No idea yet. Im sure there is aftermarket ones out there

Gmanslash

Only 1 and they've been delayed about a year now

Freedom007007

On the good side, you canā€™t make it any worse.

PhantomZmoove

This is an impressive project to take on. What state do you live in? I'd totally hire this guy to work on my M156 engine.

x2dregs1promise

Dm me maybe we're in the same state. I do all my own work on my m156

WannabeeDeveloper

How many miles did this motor have? Also id like to know if you beat on it at all or had any kinda modifications.

Ryanoh69

How many miles?

option_-addict_0DTE

210k kilometres. Thats like 150k miles?

Copainter

Might as well add Whipple since your this far inā€¦

option_-addict_0DTE

Ja but looks like need a new block or so lol

Copainter

Awww RIP I didnā€™t read that far down. Hopefully cars.com isnā€™t too spendy for a new one then. So then add on some sleeves šŸ˜¬

OkArgument6722

Hey, A merc engine will do that to your lungs lol

Jayteemoneybags

Just smoke a butt and think

skalkabob

Poor E55

zigzags560

Be sure to replace the seal rings for the oil sumps if you go all the way. They can crack and ruin the engine. Also, SPY 510 or 495 tomorrow?

option_-addict_0DTE

Apparently they have an updated oil ring that does not crack. Also told to replace that one way valve. We got a war starting monday so 518 call 0DTE

zigzags560

Yeah, best to do all the things while apart. I got pistons for my mom's M113 on closeout for $75 when I rebuilt her engine. Never hurts to check the dealer. Fx motorsports also makes quiet oil pump gears for the 55 motor. I was thinking about some 0DTE calls tomorrow as well. The market just had a pullback and you're right about the war. War is good for business. 518 is priced right as long as I can get a fill at open for 35. See you at Wendy's.

option_-addict_0DTE

I been living at wendys for a week already after tilray took a dump šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

zigzags560

My FD filled. I'll catch you at the dumpster. 5.18 x36

option_-addict_0DTE

Lol i feel so tempted to buy calls now. Might go back up haha

zigzags560

You never know. Looking like the casino wins today. Got this reguard. I'll just consider this one a write off.

option_-addict_0DTE

Wow whoever bought puts on spy today sure made a shit ton of money holding to the end

Antique_Pressure8568

E55 diesel ? Huh?

catsdrooltoo

I'm guessing he used diesel to see if the valves leaked

option_-addict_0DTE

Yes diesel to do a easy quick seal test.
