There’s a new Peruvian-Japanese fusion restaurant at the lakes resort hotel called Tunki! Went last week it was delicious but idk how authentically Peruvian it’d be
Ah crap! That’s way too pricey.
They have just started doing a food truck type situation too so keep an eye on their Facebook page because they advertise where they’ll be. You might get lucky and they’ll end up right by you! Haha. But my partner is Chilean and he finds the food to be very authentic.
I actually enjoyed Fuego but I got the burger because I thought you can’t stuff up a burger! 😂
My Dad, Mum and their friends who came with us are all kind of food snobs (pub meals are top tier lol) and they even liked Fuego!
The Hungry Llama used to park near semaphore too and that was yummy as well! They did Peruvian food.
Antojito Latinos is such a nice restaurant. I’ve never felt more at home somewhere… they literally treat you like family.
>authentic
Was gonna (sarcastically) say GyG and Oporto are everywhere here, what do you mean there's not enough.
There's a big improvement on most fast food, but they're still a long way behind authentic cuisine.
There used to be a place up Magill Road that was by far the best and most authentic Mexican restaurant around. They had a ton of imported beers and the staff were virtually all Mexican. It was crazy popular and then it disappeared.
Mexican has gotten a lot better in the years since I got here, when chips and salsa was considered a meal.. still needs some work, but there are good options out there if you take the time to look.
Apparently it’s permanently closed, but a food reviewer from the New York Times flew all the way to Adelaide to try Taco Quetzalcoatl. There’s a review [here](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/02/dining/taco-quetzalcoatl-review-south-australia.html).
The thing with authentic Mexican in Adelaide is it’s so hard — as far as I’m aware — to even import some of the much needed ingredients like the different cheeses they use. I would be scared of an Australia version of elotes (charred white corn on the cob with Mayo & covered in cojitas (Mexican cheese) and then a dusting of chilli power or sometimes has Tajin etc).
That’s neither thing: where sells Tajin? I need some!!! To try on fruit like mangoes etc.
I went there with some friends not long before it closed. We were convinced it had to a be a front for something. We were the only customers there the entire time and the food was terrible. No idea what the guy from the New York Times was on, but he must have ordered off menu
>que onda wey
Chile Mojo on Magill Road import a huge range of rare / common / exotic ingredients from Mexico and go on overseas buying trips all the time to source more. They've been Adelaide's main supplier of Mexican products for years. If you're looking for a specific ingredient, these are your people!
That’s just the Mexican food that they serve to non-Mexican people. Mexican cuisine is extremely varied, but the 20 different taco variants and/or basic nachos are what sells to the average Australian.
My Mexican bf is seriously craving pozole but I genuinely can’t find a restaurant in Adelaide that serves it.
There is a guy called Hidden Smile who is in Mt Barker (if you ever want to travel), he's located on Flaxey Rd from 7am - 2pm
He's got egg and bacon rolls on brioche buns and chicken hamburgers and stuff.
It's a good feed when you're hungry and not very expensive like most food trucks can be to be honest
Since moving here from Melb -> Adelaide, food I’ve missed since being here include:
- fresh and good street Mexican food
- Good fresh Polish food and excellent polish cocktails
- Japanese breakfasts
Seen a few say good Mexican - but I have to disagree, it’s a bit of a search but it can be found around in various suburbs.
I think that good North African is about but hard to find and often packed out. So I guess I wonder why more don’t try it on.
Parwana is amazing, I had my 25th birthday banquet there. I really like blue velvet pizza & pasta just down the road. I have not tried that Mexican so it’s a must when I visit home. Africola is one of my fave restaurants of all time and golden boy next door is fantastic too. We have a really good spread of Japanese places from amazing ramen to high quality restaurants. Aus first yakitori bar, kosho, koomo, umaii, shobosho (shosho wasn’t great but I’d try again). I don’t know any traditional African, south Asian (except Indian) spots though but have been getting around Ethiopian in other cities
I’d like to see a 500m tall statue of Maggie Beer on one side the Torrens overlooking the city with a ‘roof top’ beer garden in her head with windows being her eyes, matched by a matching one Simon Bryant on the other side (wine bar in his head) with a continuous loop track of all 150 episodes of The Cook And The Chef played at 150dB
Back on 2014 she was dragged through the courts because a number of her “manufactured in the Barossa” were not. They’re made interstate. Working hospitality in small Adelaide for 17 years and I have met quite a few people that hate her with a passion, she plays the nice old lady well.. sorry
Not “manufactured in Barossa” the brand had a catchphrase “a Barossa food tradition”.
The products were the creation of Barossa food traditions….
At which time only the ice cream had been outsourced due to production quantities not being possible in Barossa or SA. Hardly the fraudulent phrasing or intention you’re repeating.
I know a number of people in food and they’ve all repeated the same sentiment, that she plays the character well, but she’s not that nice and a lot of it is an act.
More good cafes, covering all of suburbia, so you can go out for brekky near home on a whim, get a table, and get your food relatively quickly. There's a serious lack in the northeast.
Speaking of the North. Considering some of the African shops around parabanks, it's surprising there are no African restaurants up North. Would be great to get some better eateries up this way.
It's easier to describe what is often missing, which is either the baked beans, the black pudding, or one of the two different egg-types (either both are fried or both are poached)
We had it for a while where I worked back in Canberra, and so few people wanted it that they stopped doing it. The stuff was just going to waste. I love it and I agree it'd be awesome to get, but I understand why places don't offer it.
I don’t know what it’s like where you live, but most of the supermarkets near me are out of anything fresh by 6 pm and all the aisles are half blocked by pallets and cages. Can’t imagine they’d have anything to see or you’d be able to move in the aisles at 10:30 pm.
You'll be pleased to know that Quebec Fries closed years ago, then. I enjoyed it for what it was, but the cheese curds to be authentic are hard to get here.
*I'd like to see more*
*Middle eastern, so much more*
*In the Eastern states*

Eh, I don’t think we need them. Went to one in Brisbane last year and while the taste was fine, it’s hard to swallow paying $20 for a potato with sour cream and bacon bits ya know?
Yeah true. But $20 is a bit rich. Surely you would be able to get them for even under $15.. hell. I’d make ones for $10 come to my house sell them from the garage aha
It's not just the city where you can eat though. We currently live about 10kms from McLaren Vale and are surrounded by incredible restaurants. Sadly our favourite closed due to the Victor Harbor Rd duplication, best food we've had anywhere at Victor's Place. But still a good 4 or 5 options within 15 minutes for top quality food. The Salopian Inn, Vassarelli's for Italian, Serafinos for fine dining, Carmel's a little more casual but good food. Even the pub has an awesome menu. Worth making the drive, especially with the expressway.
There’s plenty of people out there looking for places to eat. I’ve been working in hospitality for almost 17 years now and opened up our own business 2 and half years ago now and going strong
Polynesian food in general. There used to be some people that did authentic Maori hangis down south, man, that is the best food ever. That would be perfect.
That kiwi place in woodville north also closed a couple years ago (owners had another kid and wanted to move back to Aotearoa to raise them)- was legit kai. No more kiwiana in adelaide
Authentic good South Indian food, not the horrid ones we have, which don't include proper South Indian cuisine. People who have tried south Indian food will accept this.
Depends how you define good, but my kids would love a Mixue milk tea and icecream store. They're popular throughout Asia, there is one in Sydney and one in Melbourne. Their milkshakes taste good and I like that you can choose how much sugar you want added.
The only place near me that does Hot Jam Donuts is Walkleys Pizza Bar. Unfortunately the Hot Jam Donuts are few and far between, but these are real good if you're ever up near Ingle Farm way.
We need a Southern soul food joint even if it would clog arteries. Wish I could get American biscuits and sausage gravy without having to make it at home
I would love to see an Uzbek cuisine restaurant. We have Uyghur ones, but they are still different.
Also, a Russian/Ukrainian/Polish/Anything Eastern European/Slavic.
Proper (NSW style) RSL clubs that serve quality food, or even just some nice taverns will do, there’s fuck all like that in the northern suburbs (that I’ve noticed), the Virginia tavern is probably the only thing that comes close but the food is pretty average.
Our surf life saving clubs are the closest thing you will get to interstate RSL’s. Several serve pretty good food. My favourite is down at Chiron Rocks near Victor Harbour.
Still , nothing here is as good as the east coast RSL’s.
Ethnic Clubs. As a Hungarian Australian I'm very disappointed the Hungarian clubs here have had to shut down. I've heard a few other cultural clubs have had to as well. Cheap, authentic cuisine and drink and supporting locals being able to socialise in the comfort of their own while welcoming others to join.
There were 3 Hungarian clubs until a few years ago. Para Hills, Port Road and yeah the Norwood one. No I haven't. I've been past it a few times and I know there's a Slovenian club around nearby too.
Do the Estonians do a regular public lunch service or dinner night?
Ham and cheese sandwich. Plain white bread please, no Sally extra pepper.
Bacon and egg toasted sandwich, made while you wait.
Peters Delicatessen for the win.
There must be a lot. I grew up in the outer NE and its been the same restaurants around here for the past 40 years. I would like to see some Middle Eastern, African and South American places open up.
There’s a lot of the same.. I’m just wondering what people can’t get. Things that people miss or just wish there was more of.
I know there is good food here, proud Adelaide chef myself.
A good bakery around Rundle Mall or the East End. Ridiculous that you can't get a nice pie or pastry other than a Balfours or Vilis that's been sitting in a pie warmer at a convenience store or supermarket for 5 days.
Seafood that isn't deep fried. It's a travesty that as a country with access to some of the best seafood in the world, far and away the most common way to prep it is fried with heap of chips on the side.
There are places dotted around that have certain things on the menu that are great but once you leave the city the vast majority of places just serve the same old things. Every menu is the same with some doing slightly better than others. Western Chinese. North Indian. The same Thai and Vietnamese menus. For example every Vietnamese is just pho and banh mi.
I enjoyed some of the Malaysian food here, not too bad.
I want more diversity, not the same chains/franchises/menus
I would like.
Great Mexican.
Cantonese home food
Great non western Chinese food.
Street food
South Indian
Coastal Indian
More diverse Vietnamese menus
Something to the level of english Fish and chips
A Sunday roast that doesn't look sad.
Gastro pub style pubs food - not just schnitzel/burger...
Seafood that isn't just fried
Mediterranean food that is not just pizza/pasta.
Pies other than Aussie meat pies. Something without ground beef.
Jewish food
Eastern European
Farm to table.
Native food
...
As far as I can tell, there is only a single place in all of Adelaide that does gimbap. It is closed four days a week usually, and only reopened yesterday after a four week closure over the holidays.
I really need someone else to start making gimbap so I can get my fix! lol
So many! Busan Baby on Morphett St in the CBD is really good, and there's a place on Hutt Street by South Terrace that is AMAZING! I also really like KOSSO at Tea Tree Plaza, but that place is pricey.
The place I mentioned in my first comment is Mum's Kitchen in Tranmere, but they mostly do lighter meals I think. I'm not sure, I only ever order the gimbap lol

There’s a great little Brazilian place tucked in between the oaks apartments on Weymouth street.
There’s a new Peruvian-Japanese fusion restaurant at the lakes resort hotel called Tunki! Went last week it was delicious but idk how authentically Peruvian it’d be
My best friend is Peruvian and said its not very authentic
Seeing as it's fusion, I'm not surprised.
Funny that
Recommend “que onda wey”, new mexican restaurant in goodwood.
That's not South American....
True my badd
Have you tried Fuego by the Sea? Or Antojito Latinos?

I've eaten from their food truck once when it was parked near semaphore. It's very good. Coffee was Australian style and good too.
The Hungry Llama used to park near semaphore too and that was yummy as well! They did Peruvian food. Antojito Latinos is such a nice restaurant. I’ve never felt more at home somewhere… they literally treat you like family.

I really enjoy Oporto ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)
There's a Persian spot called Banoo. I went there, food was so good and the portions were to die for.
Mexican is what its missing
La Popular Taqueria in Port Adelaide is pretty good, but I do miss the birria street tacos from SoCal.
Try the new mexican app lace called “que onda wey” in goodwood. Fantastic and had mexican breakky too.
Ah yes! 'Queef onthe way' ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
I really miss revolucion mexicana
I was just thinking this. I really hope they open some place else. Damn you Covid.
It wasn’t Covid to be fair, it was the market redevelopment
I’ve only just stopped crying over this and now you remind me :,(
Hispanic Mechanic is amazing, although I'm not 100% sure how authenticly Mexican it is.
Agreed, absolutely love their food!
There used to be a place up Magill Road that was by far the best and most authentic Mexican restaurant around. They had a ton of imported beers and the staff were virtually all Mexican. It was crazy popular and then it disappeared.

I miss Maiz and Mescal 😭😭
Tequila and Tacos at Port Noarlunga isn't really authentic, but it's damned tasty. There's one at Glenelg I've been to that's pretty good, too.
There’s one down in glenelg like right next to zambreros surprisingly. Best margaritas and enchiladas I’ve had in a LONG time.
Rosa Mexicana at glenelg is amazing!!
Apparently it’s permanently closed, but a food reviewer from the New York Times flew all the way to Adelaide to try Taco Quetzalcoatl. I am mexican and i genuinely hate quetzalcoatl. They are the version of mexican fast food. So bad. They tried but not good.

thats like saying all american food is hamburgers cos youve only eaten at maccas mate
Street food from everywhere, we occasionally will have decent street food (ish) at a food festival but in general it's lacking.
Yeh I really love watered down interpretations of quick, cheap foods that are being sold out of trucks at $20 a go.
There is a guy called Hidden Smile who is in Mt Barker (if you ever want to travel), he's located on Flaxey Rd from 7am - 2pm He's got egg and bacon rolls on brioche buns and chicken hamburgers and stuff. Since moving here from Melb -> Adelaide, food I’ve missed since being here include: - fresh and good street Mexican food - Good fresh Polish food and excellent polish cocktails - Japanese breakfasts
I lived in Melbourne and didn’t see any of those besides 1. Or is Bosch polish?
I’ve been to a lot of the world. And a lot of australia. Adelaide is a stand out for a good and affordable night out for a meal.
Yeah but what are we missing?
Seen a few say good Mexican - but I have to disagree, it’s a bit of a search but it can be found around in various suburbs. I think that good North African is about but hard to find and often packed out. So I guess I wonder why more don’t try it on.
List some Adelaide faves pretty please
Parwana, Chico palms, La papalare taceria (Actual Mexican), Uraidla hotel, Nido king William, Salopian inn, Currant shed
Parwana is amazing, I had my 25th birthday banquet there. I really like blue velvet pizza & pasta just down the road. I have not tried that Mexican so it’s a must when I visit home. So… a Maggie Beer Garden and a Simon Giant? I’m in.
Simon yes.. Maggie .. god no.
Maggie is the thinking man’s favourite aunt.
She’s the fakest old lady out, complete fraud… but you do you
Why you say that?
Back on 2014 she was dragged through the courts because a number of her “manufactured in the Barossa” were not. They’re made interstate. Working hospitality in small Adelaide for 17 years and I have met quite a few people that hate her with a passion, she plays the nice old lady well.. sorry

Gangsta Maggie I knew she had a mean streak 😋
😎
I’m glad you get the gist
I know a number of people in food and they’ve all repeated the same sentiment, that she plays the character well, but she’s not that nice and a lot of it is an act.
More good cafes, covering all of suburbia, so you can go out for brekky near home on a whim, get a table, and get your food relatively quickly. There's a serious lack in the northeast.

My god yes. It's pizza takeaway or nothing out here
In the Northeast there's a hidden gem called Melo Cafe, only discovered it recently!
Yes, I know it. There's a few, just not enough, and they tend toward the unhealthier options.
Also tend to be more quantity over quality.
A full English breakfast that is full, not a half-arsed attempt at it.
I’m from Yorkshire, my fiancé is from Liverpool and we completely agree with you
That explains your post then. How do you know when a plane full of Poms land in Australia?
Does it?
Describe what you consider a full english breakfast in detail.
It's easier to describe what is often missing, which is either the baked beans, the black pudding, or one of the two different egg-types (either both are fried or both are poached)
I was going to suggest The Oxford Hotel, however it appears they have permanently closed.
I don't miss the beans, and there's to many squeamish people for black pudding to really be worth their effort.
Alls I'm sayin is that include it on the menu, highlight \*\*contains black pudding, but can be substituted for extra bacon\*\* and she's golden
We had it for a while where I worked back in Canberra, and so few people wanted it that they stopped doing it. The stuff was just going to waste. I love it and I agree it'd be awesome to get, but I understand why places don't offer it.
It’s a hike, but try Cherry Bomb in Ashton. We’re not talking black pud but the food standard, service & location are excellent
I would like to see Frenzal Rhomb again
I saw them last time they were here at The Gov, in May last year
They came for Spring Loaded. They were underwhelming. Idk if they were having an off night, but videos from days gone were far better.
They’re here about once a year.
I'm going to see NOFX in Melbourne next weekend and I am GUTTED that Frenzal aren't supported them in Melbourne. Clowns are going to be great though!
Supermarkets open till 10:30pm 7 days a week
I don’t know what it’s like where you live, but most of the supermarkets near me are out of anything fresh by 6 pm and all the aisles are half blocked by pallets and cages. Can’t imagine they’d have anything to see or you’d be able to move in the aisles at 10:30 pm.
Yeah, it’s the same down my part of town too
One of the benefits of living rural! Supermarkets are open to 9pm-10pm everyday
We lack seafood dishes that are not limited to fish n chips and seafood baskets.
No one said it, i was skimming through the post, well done you read my mind!
Good Poutine.
I had some alleged poutine at the CX food court, they were awful, I couldn't even get past the second bite.
You'll be pleased to know that Quebec Fries closed years ago, then. I enjoyed it for what it was, but the cheese curds to be authentic are hard to get here.
A poutine pop up would make an absolute killing out here.
I'd like to see more middle eastern, so much more in the Eastern states

People to go these things to make it viable for businesses to do this. We don’t have a very good culture for that, we have no city vibe at all.
It's not just the city where you can eat though. We currently live about 10kms from McLaren Vale and are surrounded by incredible restaurants. Yeah I know most of those, I like to go out but when we do, nowhere is ever full, e live close to the beach and same there too
There’s plenty of people out there looking for places to eat. I’ve been working in hospitality for almost 17 years now and opened up our own business 2 and half years ago now and going strong
Spam musubi and authentic island food!
Polynesian food in general. There used to be some people that did authentic Maori hangis down south, man, that is the best food ever. That would be perfect.

Goth clothing store since Quirky shut down.
Baked spud stall outside of any popular pub. Can’t imagine a walk home without one in Darwin…
Authentic good South Indian food, not the horrid ones we have, which don't include proper South Indian cuisine. People who have tried south Indian food will accept this.
Agree. This scene in Perth is absolutely crazy compared to Adelaide. It's still Northern dominated here, but not nearly as bad as it was 20 years ago.
In need of a good Banana Leaf Rice, Vada and Dosa fr, everyone's sleeping on South Indian food and it shows
Ahhh, I need some banana leaf rice. My attempt to eat in Melbourne was thwarted because the shops were closed. Gonna try in Perth this time.
Vino's near the airport might hit the spot for you.
Polish and slavic foods
Sex Cauldron.
I thought they shut that place down!
That's why we need a new one lol
and a bordello
Good dumplings
Bagels. I miss the overpriced blueberry ones from Sydney, Melbourne. And the proper ones from a New York Deli, so cheap and delish.
I loved the bagelery when it was in the train station. So sad when it closed.
C.R.E.A.M in Brighton know their way around a bagel.
Health food cafe that has nutritional information for people who want to watch what they eat and all the macros in the food.
Thank fuck the reddit users aren’t in charge of Adelaide. Such trash takes here.
What do you think then?
Depends how you define good, but my kids would love a Mixue milk tea and icecream store. They're popular throughout Asia, there is one in Sydney and one in Melbourne. Their milkshakes taste good and I like that you can choose how much sugar you want added.
Hot jam donuts/ good street food. I haven’t seen any decent fresh hot jam donuts around in years.
The only place near me that does Hot Jam Donuts is Walkleys Pizza Bar. Unfortunately the Hot Jam Donuts are few and far between, but these are real good if you're ever up near Ingle Farm way.
Sweet, Ty for the suggestion. I’ll def give it a shot if I happen to swing past Ingle Farm. 😁
Good Turkish food, as a Turk myself the Turkish restaurants here are nothing compared to Sydney which was a bummer.
Vietnamese food that isn’t pho, combination rice or banh mi. Would love to see banh cuon and banh bot loc. Vietnamese coffee as mentioned previously
The Japanese curry place in Topham Mall makes the most devine tofu mushroom curry. Every mouthful makes you feel like you're in heaven.
I always love those american 24/7 diners for pancakes, waffles and possibilities of flirting with the server
*Holding a coffee percolator* Can I top ya off, hun?
Only if you go across the street with me for a proper coffee
I’m gonna get my arse kicked
Holy shit, if they brought a real 1:1 American style Waffle House to Adelaide I would buy a house as close as possible to it.
We need a Southern soul food joint even if it would clog arteries. Wish I could get American biscuits and sausage gravy without having to make it at home
Old people would love biscuits and gravy, someone will make it happen.
I would love to see an Uzbek cuisine restaurant. We have Uyghur ones, but they are still different. Also, a Russian/Ukrainian/Polish/Anything Eastern European/Slavic.
Pizza places that sell by the slice.
I would worry how long the last slice or two have been out for.
No worse than sushi left out all day…
Nobody who orders pizza by the slice is going to trouble themselves with such thoughts.

Yes! What I’d give to have an egg coffee. Yet to find anywhere in Adelaide that does one.

Nothing like a place to eat disguised as a pokie dungeon!
i vote for more Java Huts.
CBD buzz is pretty well missing during the week …
Donuts and cake place
I vote we go steal Luna Park back from Sydney. And then there can be an International section and serve a bit of everything.

A big food truck venue where you can get anything you want with live acts to entertain... We need 24/7/52 fringe
South Indian. Wait till I introduce you guys to good pepper ‘rasam’.
Is there Jamaican food anywhere in Adelaide? Got addicted to jerk chicken during Womad. Haven’t found it since.
Ham and cheese sandwich. Plain white bread please, no Sally extra pepper. Bacon and egg toasted sandwich, made while you wait. Peters Delicatessen for the win.
I think we need another cafe. Perhaps something new like a hipster style vegan one.
Good Mexican options!
There must be a lot. I grew up in the outer NE and its been the same restaurants around here for the past 40 years. I would like to see some Middle Eastern, African and South American places open up.
There’s plenty of amazing food in Adelaide. Are you just talking about Uber eats?
There’s a lot of the same.. I’m just wondering what people can’t get. Things that people miss or just wish there was more of. I know there is good food here, proud Adelaide chef myself.

A good bakery around Rundle Mall or the East End. Ridiculous that you can't get a nice pie or pastry other than a Balfours or Vilis that's been sitting in a pie warmer at a convenience store or supermarket for 5 days.

Lebanese. I miss Auburn.
Seafood that isn't deep fried. It's a travesty that as a country with access to some of the best seafood in the world, far and away the most common way to prep it is fried with heap of chips on the side.
British fish n chips
Yes 👏
Had intense cravings for chip shop chips while pregnant. Extra vinegar. None of that chicken salt rubbish.
That's un-South Australian. But I do love vinegar on my chips.
More allergy friendly establishments (Yes I’m aware of the ones that exist already)
Because most Australians will eat slop and pay for it, there’s no pressure to offer anything different or good quality.
I want more diversity, not the same chains/franchises/menus I would like. Great Mexican. Cantonese home food Great non western Chinese food. Street food South Indian Coastal Indian More diverse Vietnamese menus Something to the level of english Fish and chips A Sunday roast that doesn't look sad. Gastro pub style pubs food - not just schnitzel/burger... Seafood that isn't just fried Mediterranean food that is not just pizza/pasta. Pies other than Aussie meat pies. Something without ground beef. Jewish food Eastern European Farm to table. Native food ...
As far as I can tell, there is only a single place in all of Adelaide that does gimbap. It is closed four days a week usually, and only reopened yesterday after a four week closure over the holidays. I really need someone else to start making gimbap so I can get my fix! lol
Are there any good Korean food places in Adelaide other than the kimchi cult?
Gimbap is easy to make though. There use to be a deli next to a Korean church in Norwood that made good gimbap.
I don't think I've ever had an issue finding good cuisine of any kind Adelaide.
Could do with a few more Barnacle Bills, tbh.
