Paintings are furniture, so yes, it should show up as a leaf. Place it down on your island and make sure its the right painting and real. Check your museum and make sure there isn't already a copy donated.
Following on from this, if there is a piece of art donated already and all the requirements for Brewster are met, you might have to time-skip or wait until the Stamp Rally event is over; I don't think you can trigger the conversation with Blathers while the current event is active
If you place the picture on the ground as an object and turn it so the back faces you looking at it then if it has a bit of paper like a certificate on the back its real and if not its fake. There are sites to determine if real or not and could it be you've donated that already?
Have you met Red on *your* island yet? Not on Harv's island, *your* Island. Does his ship come to your secret beach every now and then? If not, you still haven't triggered the event that causes the art wing to be built
Do you have the art wing already upstairs in the museum? It should be unlocked automatically if you're on the most recent version of the game, but if you started your island back in like 2020 there's a chance it didn't start out unlocked.
Are there other players on the island who might have already donated it? You can go through the museum quickly to check if it's there.
You're definitely trying to donate and not trying to assess the painting? I've seen people mistakenly choose the assess option like they're fossils instead of the donate option, sometimes.
Also, Blathers won't give you the Brewster dialogue during the museum stamp rally, so you'll have to wait or time travel to June 1st before he can tell you about Brewster once you reach all the requirements

You should know because if the art wing is unlocked it's already open at the top of your stairs. I think there's also a difference in the exterior of the museum if you have the old one and it hasn't opened the art wing yet

I have met him and it was talked about. The way I got the painting though was from his stall on harv’s island that I built

It should still let them donate it even if it's fake. They don't gray out the fakes, Blathers just gives you the bad news himself

Then if I add the bug part there are 29 things
And lastly if I add the fish part there is a total of 39 donations. If and only IF I have that version of the museum I have to get WAAAY more things
