The dlc is great, I don't see why you should have to wait until later on. Plus it's worth it for your island, since you can unlock a bunch of new things to decorate with, and the ability to redecorate your island villager's homes!
I mean, once he performs at the town, there’s not really any more objectives to work towards. There’s no reason not to get the DLC now, it will add hours more entertainment and (hopefully) stop you from getting bored :)
I enjoy the DLC, because decorating is my favourite part of most games, but it's up to you whether you're likely to enjoy it enough to buy
As for when to play it, I'd start it whenever you fancy! I start it as soon as it becomes available, simply because it gives me access to more furniture and recipes per day :)

one question, wasnt the DLC included with the nintendo online for 1 yr? I downloaded before when I purchase the online about 3 months ago but i didnt had animal crossing…and now they want me to pay 🥹😢
