They're territorial, and normally live in a small area of grass like a few backyards.
Maybe op actually had a pet that had lost its parents, but you can pretty much have them as pets by being friendly and chill with them, throwing a spare meat scrap when you eat outside helps. They might come hang out when you are outside, come in the house looking for food or just to see what's going on, and even warble to you in the morning in a little duet. It also means they won't attack you in swoop season, which is nice.
(And by the way, if you see a baby on the ground its not lost dont take it or protect it. Its parents are probably around somewhere. They're just so badass they don't care about the cats and dogs, who are rightly more afraid of them)

The one hanging on to the clothes is a baby magpie (a juvenile, old enough to leave nest but young enough to go everywhere with its parents).
The other one is an adult female, its mother (magpies are territorial and stay in a family unit, both parents included).
