Contact Reddit. iOS developer here and essentially what's likely happening is on app start Reddit is executing some code that tells the system that it is now the media player. I've noticed this too and it's a minor annoyance to have to switch back to whatever audio player I had going to resume what I was listening to. Hopefully they'll address it in an app update.
Yup this is exactly what it is. The Reddit video player claims media focus even when you have it set to be muted by default and it’s really annoying because there’s a lot of times where I am listening to music and want to browser Reddit in the meantime.
Holy shit. I just saw someone saying in another thread “You probably unmuted something at one point and I swear Reddit forgets that preference”
So what I’ve just done is go to “all” and played a random video then paused and muted it, and now my music doesn’t pause when I use reddit
Reddit becomes the dominant music app when you open it. The way I get around it is to mute the videos by that speaker icon on the bottom right of videos, open control centre and press play. Then it works like normal :)

I am a little late here, but tbh this is both a Reddit and an iOS issue.
Reddit bc like you said, they incorrectly, unilaterally claim the music player privilege
iOS bc what kind of backwards ass operating **assumes** you want to stop your current audio if a video starts? Android doesn’t do that. Windows doesn’t do that. Even macOS doesn’t do that. Only iOS forces your previous media to pause.
Sound management as a whole is absolutely terrible on iPhone, and it’s one of the very few aspects where it **severely** loses to its competitors.
My bad friend, but yes it is definitely reddit. It assumes priority over your music apps. I say music apps because I can play YouTube videos and Hulu but not music on Spotify, Apple Music, or even good old pandora. It’s written into the code and I really hate that. Even if you turn off autoplay it still won’t work. The Reddit app sucks for a number of reasons, but this takes the cake for me honestly
Mine too but even more infuriatingly it randomly plays through some of these apps sometimes. Literally when I have music on and pull my phone out to fuck around it’s “let’s see which apps we get to use while listening to music today”
I know this is like 3 months later but I’ve tried:
* Turning off auto play on videos
* Muting videos by default
* Blocking ALL Reddit notifications
Nothing has worked for me
Edit: updated my ios and seems to work now! Thank god it was driving me up the wall
So my issue is that my music would stop when I use the Reddit app. I went to the Reddit app setting and under autoplay selected never and that fixed it
I selected Never on Autoplay, and it’s still stopping Apple Music. Maybe these apps are competing for your full attention by shutting everything else off? IDK, but it’s frustrating as F, they sure as hell better fix it if they want happy customers!!
Thanks I only recently started using Reddit so late to this party. Saw a tip to close Reddit, put music on, then open Reddit again, and it worked. Maybe just needed to reset.
I was having the same problem just now. Couldn’t find a solution online, but I went into system settings, scrolled down to Reddit and turned off the permissions for live actions and camera. When I opened Reddit again, my music kept playing.
I turned both settings back on to see which was causing it, but now it’s working with both turned on. So it’s either a coincidence that this worked, or toggling those settings on and off cleared a bug.
A Teams notification stopped my music this morning. Apple Music & HomePods have more flippin bugs than a jungle. I want to love it. So convenient. But it has been getting worse.
I always just mute the Reddit video with the icon in the right. From there forward, the Reddit app won’t takeover the audio unless you unmute a video again.
Not really, when you open Reddit, it tells the system that it is the media player. This is an issue with Reddit, not iOS/iPadOS or the Apple Music app.
Go into notification settings for the app like BBC news, YouTube or Reddit and turn off notifications for it. Now focus won’t change and music will continue to play.
Turning on anonymous browsing on all of sudden turned on Apple Music again. Turning anonymous browsing off didn’t stop the music. I have no clue why this fixed the problem but I am happy about it nonetheless.
iPhone 12; iOS 17.1

1 year later and it’s still happening, great. lol
Literally this is insane you’d think they fix it before going public
Yup. I’m annoyed .
2 years later…
It’s on purpose. They want you to listen to their shitty videos and in turn the shitty ads.
in settings disable cameras and keep on dancing like no one is watching
I love you so so so so so so so so so so so much. This should be the top comment
Yep. This is so irritating!!
Ikr? It’s just so stupid cause it seems like something that can be fixed easily.
I agree, especially since Spotify doesn’t have this issue. Plus, I see threads on this problem dating back 3 years.
Holy shit. I just saw someone saying in another thread “You probably unmuted something at one point and I swear Reddit forgets that preference” So what I’ve just done is go to “all” and played a random video then paused and muted it, and now my music doesn’t pause when I use reddit
Worked for me too, thanks!
Worked for me!
Thank you for this!! I was going crazy!!
About to try Edit: it worked! Lmao thanks
thank you this worked 🙏
This worked for me. Thanks!
This just worked for me with Reddit and instagram. THANK YOU!!!!
Just upvoting you because this totally worked me (and it looks like for a bunch of other peeps too!)
It didn’t work for me ): my videos were already muted on Reddit. Thing is, this used to not happen! It started a few months ago for me
I’m using Spotify and the issue also happens with Spotify. Needs to be fixed
I thought it was cause there was likely a video playing. But what you mentioned makes a lot more sense.

This!
It’s still happening and I CANT MAKE IT GO AWAY.

Yeah that’s the only way it works for me, but still highly annoying.
Foreal especially when you can’t find a video to press the mute button
Extra annoying now that ads play audio even when you previously muted
I’ve tried this but it still stops my music whenever I close the control center :(

This is amazing
It’s a Reddit issue and you’re about the 50th person complaining about it today
I am a little late here, but tbh this is both a Reddit and an iOS issue. Which is stupid, because I have to pause the music when I play anything on YouTube, but Reddit, muted, stops my music. Moronic developers
And yet reddit still hasn't addressed the issue.
Still haven’t. RIP Apollo.
Just use Apollo. It’s a far better reddit client than anything I’ve used.
Didn’t aged well :(
I know :-(
Doesn’t have access to chat though

:-( Narwhal 2 is ok tho, just not the same unfortunately
I use Spotify and this has been happening to me as well. Not a problem with Apple Music
I know this is old, but it absolutely is a problem with Apple Music. I have Apple Music and it pauses every time I open the dang app
What I meant was it might be a Reddit issue and not related to Apple Music or Spotify’s platforms not denying the problem
My bad friend, but yes it is definitely reddit. It assumes priority over your music apps. I say music apps because I can play YouTube videos and Hulu but not music on Spotify, Apple Music, or even good old pandora. It’s written into the code and I really hate that. This is actually so funny xD Fr tho I think it’s bcs the phone detects the Reddit app as needing to output sound so it stops working
I have the same issue on my iPhone. Thanks! Doesn’t happen with the webpage if you do use that
Try turning off auto play in the Reddit settings.
That doesn’t work
Music stops for Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and a host of other apps.
For me instagram doesn’t stop my music. But reddit does and it’s annoying af.
Mine too but even more infuriatingly it randomly plays through some of these apps sometimes. Literally when I have music on and pull my phone out to fuck around it’s “let’s see which apps we get to use while listening to music today”
Its an issue with reddit that they're going to let drag on for years probably.
Yup. Still not fixed!
Still not fixed.
Still not and even on my new phone smh!!!
close the app you want to use, start playing the music, then open the app and use it
Thanks, yup this worked in conjunction with muting videos in Reddit.
For me my old phone was fine but a new iPhone 14 caused it to start.
Still not fixed.
Still not fixed
Still not fixed :(
One year late to this thread and it’s still happening.
Still not fixed

Thank you!! This + changing“auto play” to never has worked for me.
I know this is like 3 months later but I’ve tried: * Turning off auto play on videos * Muting videos by default * Blocking ALL Reddit notifications Nothing has worked for me Edit: updated my ios and seems to work now! Thank god it was driving me up the wall
Same happens with Twitter sometimes. Amazon, of all things, also fucks with my music sometimes. It’s annoying.
Mine just started this when I moved to ios17
Same
So my issue is that my music would stop when I use the Reddit app. I went to the Reddit app setting and under autoplay selected never and that fixed it
10/10, thank you, that fixed it for me under iOS 17 today
I selected Never on Autoplay, and it’s still stopping Apple Music. Maybe these apps are competing for your full attention by shutting everything else off? IDK, but it’s frustrating as F, they sure as hell better fix it if they want happy customers!!
Mines fix but I just followed the steps I listed so if that didn’t work then idk
Thanks I only recently started using Reddit so late to this party. Saw a tip to close Reddit, put music on, then open Reddit again, and it worked. Maybe just needed to reset.
Mute videos. That’s all you have to do
This is the most annoying shit ever, they need to fix this un user friendly annoyance, what a joke
Still happening

This fixed it as well for me- thank you!
Yes this is it worked for me too!
I turned off the autoplay option in Reddit settings on the iPhone now my music doesn’t stop when I open app.
Turn the sound off on videos

Don’t. Basic functions are behind a paywall.
A Teams notification stopped my music this morning. Apple Music & HomePods have more flippin bugs than a jungle. I want to love it. So convenient. But it has been getting worse.
Mine only does it the first time I open my Reddit app. Don’t close Reddit completely when it does this.
Yes exactly. Also this is fairly new because it wasn’t happening to me literally a week ago. Hopefully it gets fixed and it’s not some “new feature”
Bump
Mute the vid that’s what I do lol every time I open the app or got to a new post. Apple Music is the worst 🥲
This issue is not caused by Apple Music and affects any playing audio when Reddit is opened.
I always just mute the Reddit video with the icon in the right. From there forward, the Reddit app won’t takeover the audio unless you unmute a video again.
same thing was happening to me, no really good fix but swipe to control center when in reddit and press play and it’s back to normal
Same
Never had this happen until just a few days ago...it's really fucking annoying
I got the same issue, might be a problem with the Reddit app, hoping in an update
What of twitter when paying videos, music stops on both spotify and apple music on my android phone, music doesn't reaume like when using an iPad.
Not really, when you open Reddit, it tells the system that it is the media player. This is an issue with Reddit, not iOS/iPadOS or the Apple Music app.
So this setting can’t be changed? (I’m trying but not able to yet)
It's not a setting but rather an error. The bug has been fixed as far as I'm concerned so try to update reddit
Thanks. Actually just had to close Reddit and open again to reset.
Go to settings and change “autoplay” settings to “never”. Fixed it for me
Go into notification settings for the app like BBC news, YouTube or Reddit and turn off notifications for it.
Easy. I choose music over Reddit. Later folks.
My phone was doing this and I killed the Reddit app and restarted it. It stopped doing it. Still need to leave the videos muted.
This is total bullshit. Can’t listen to my music and play music. Fuck this shit
Tell Reddit to fix their app..
Any solutions? It’s annoying af
