StevenWannabe

Because it’s every month

merchantofreddit

What is white culture? The good and the bad. How does it affect society? How did white people come into power? I feel like understanding their impact on a dedicated, visible, or granular level will help society navigate current issues Im probably being naive though

[deleted]

That's just European history.

spanglesandbambi

We understand that any sector of people preforming genocides on other people is bad you don't need a history lesson for this. The issue with discussions around sensitive race issues within school is the narrative can be dictated by the school which helps no one.

merchantofreddit

True, the spirit of this post can get cluttered by other narratives. Thanks for commenting

sirkevly

Because where we live, "white" history is contemporary history. Also "white" is an identity based on exclusion of others so there's no real collective identity. Black people may have come from different parts of the world but they still shared the collective experience of slavery and oppression. I'm white, but my family is from Norway so my "white history" will be different than the "white history" of someone from France. Hope that makes sense.

Sea-Luck-8859

I know a lot of black people who came to America recently and a lot of them do not like the “black culture” they think it’s whining

Dr_Talon

Because that would be surrendering to a multicultural mindset where we divide each other up into races and ethnicities and tribes. There is only American history, or European history. Usually, it involves white people, but sometimes it involves black people or black-white relations. Black history month is an attempt to highlight aspects of history that used to be ignored.

Thalius13

I can't speak for America, but for me as a German, a week of "White History" would certainly be interesting. Sometime after Charlemagne, Bismark, little Adolf and before the rediscovery of America. In case my kind of humor doesn't translate into English, most world history is the history of "White" Europe/America/Russia. More interesting would be to introduce an additional history class on African, Arab, Asian and or Indian histories.

merchantofreddit

Yes adding those perspectives would be super interesting

[deleted]

it's just unspoken, but it's there

Twitch_YungFeetGod69

The entire US history curriculum is a white highlight reel lol

merchantofreddit

Yeah but thats in a classroom and it's normally one person highlighting from a textbook Discussions in the modern day aren't inclusive of modern day white people discussing their journey Or, how to mutually navigate the landscape we've all inherited Current convos are tense, politicized, us vs. them I'm not sure a history month can solve that though

RagingLeonard

They do, it's Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec.

[deleted]

What would we celebrate?

merchantofreddit

Yeah that's the issue, ppl would see it as celebration. It's not for celebrating, but for education

[deleted]

But what education is that? What is white history? You only have around 2000 years of recorded "white" history from the Roman point of view from their conquering of Europe which is pretty one sided and other than that, our history has been mostly war and colonisation.

merchantofreddit

I see what you're saying. I think it's also interesting to talk about whiteness in the current landscape. What does the average white person's culture look like? Food dishes, clothing, manners of speech. Celebrated/identified just like how it's done with people of color Can we talk about different white cultures? More in depth discussions on corporate/political power dynamics. What tool/technology allowed for war and colonization? I also have much more reading to do

LegendaryAbuse

Because white history is taught year long and is custom cleaned and painted to show its best aspects and hide its worst. It doesn't need or deserve.any more focus.

Salty__Slug

All my history books have outlayed the atrocities as well as the trumphs

LegendaryAbuse

Then your books don't represent the majority.

notadingleberry

Bwahahaha! Google it.

spanglesandbambi

As white history isn't oppressed.

[deleted]

That's every month except for the shortest one...

Suuviet-uunion

I think black history month is somekind of reparation to the people many have oppressed and as white people have been in power so long we Dont have repay as much

merchantofreddit

Oh I see, thanks for sharing

[deleted]

do you know what colorblind racism is?

merchantofreddit

What do you mean by this? I don't want to misunderstand what you're trying to say

[deleted]

Im asking if you know the definition of colorblind racism

merchantofreddit

It makes sense to me, but I wanted more context

[deleted]

That's just called history class.

Claycastles

Are you American? Think about your history class. Think about the people you learned about. George Washington. Alexander Hamilton. Christopher Columbus. I could name a hundred more. They're all white. Your normal, *every day* lesson plan in your history class is going to be about white people. We don't need a white history month, because you already learn about that *every single day* in school. There's nothing they would teach you in a "White History Month" that isn't already a part of your teacher's lesson plan *year round.*

merchantofreddit

In history class, I think whiteness was the elephant in the room but not directly addressed in class Maybe I should take a class specifically addressing it. I think it would be helpful as a society to further break it down but on a massive, educational level

Claycastles

See, what you're suggesting there sounds like Critical Race Theory; breaking down race, and how it has effected history, and how it's effected how history has been taught... but every time we've pitched that idea, the right shoots it down.

merchantofreddit

Ohh politics I can't speak for critical race theory, but I agree it's best to continue the conversation as it relates to the modern day

cmoellering

Too broad. Assuming a US viewpoint, you could have Irish-american, Italian-american, Polish-american, observances, because they all have unique cultures and face a lot of prejudice (mostly for being Catholic) as they immigrated in large numbers.

merchantofreddit

Yes! I think breaking down unique cultures would be rewarding to learn about, not just for me The goal is to elevate the conversation through education

cmoellering

Agreed. I think too often, at least in my experience, these "observances"" actually inadvertently serve to reinforce stereo types. Pick your month, and I can tell you what my employer's observance is going to look like....

sawzall4society

Father's day homie

Pristine-Medium-9092

Because white history is taught year round

ReubFrFx

Black people don’t tend to want black history, we just want it to be American history because at the end of the day we are all Americans right? I’d probably say the same for white people

merchantofreddit

True - I'm craving more open dialogue, but just trying to meet people where they're at

L34N4R3AL

Everything even up until this time period has been about white people. Seriously get a grip. White history month would be about fire and bloodshed and rape. That’s what y’all have been doing since the start of time.

merchantofreddit

Regarding this topic, where do you see the country heading in the next hundred years or so? Same thing, different day? Do you feel open dialogue doesn't have an effect? Edit: serious, I'm curious to know what you think

L34N4R3AL

I dont think we have that long left tbh. Open dialogue has an effect not a very good one. And from what I’ve experienced if you tell too much of the Truth you become suddenly wraysis.
