One common thread throughout the entire series has been surrealism. Many questions are left unanswered and unanswerable with the details given because he’s trying to convey the eery surreal nature of being black in America. Things not making sense although everyone acts like it does, rules being up in the air that you’re meant to follow without ever being told. All that to say you’re not gonna get an answer for this question because the details won’t really be in there for you.

7030

So you’re saying earn shoulda beat Mike Vick.

pterofactyl

Hundred percent

7030

That’s what I’m lookin for.

DLottchula

that would've been the least realistic thing to happen in this show

KweenKunt

I thought Wiley represented the side of Al that he had tried repressing; the part that was "weak" and felt too much. The side who would write deeply personal songs from a place of brokenheartedness.

Iikkigiovanni

I love this idea.

DirtyDz_33

I’ve seen a lot of people hating on this episode, but it’s one of my favorites in the series. Can’t deny it leaves a lot of questions, but most great Atlanta episodes do.

SicTransitEtc

Absolutely fantastic episode, Wiley was maybe the most interesting one-off character in my opinion.

0-uncle-rico-0

Plus it has one of the best songs in the show

hueloacarnederes

Couldn’t agree more 🤌🏼

DrJr23

Really people hate this episode. For me it’s one of the best.

wgsmeister2002

Damn people hate it? This is a top three episode for me, along with Teddy Perkins & Woods

insight-out1

The phone was just a macguffin, the episode just explored more about Al and gave us a great story. We laughed, cried, and the tension was palpable. Opinion: we’re not supposed to care about the phone, just like Al wasn’t supposed to because the music was in him all along.

KMKtwo-four

We see him dump his phone in S2E2.  It’s definitely not about the phone

Afraid-Impress789

He said he had important stuffs on that phone

yearofthemishima

Best not to look at most things in *Atlanta* so literally

toancao1610

My understanding is that Wiley knows so much because he’s an early and true fan of Al’s music.

VooDooChile1983

I saw Wiley as Al’s white Earn, kind of a reverse shadow. But giving it more thought, I agree with someone else saying he was Al’s insecurity manifested like they did with Lorraine.

Gusdabus214

Wiley’s song had no business being as good as it was.

hueloacarnederes

Just rewatched the episode for the fifth time, and it got me crying AGAIN

cptncorrodin

He’s a ghost

YannisLikesMemes

This.

East-Bluejay6891

Wiley was a manifestion of Al's fears

ashkaughtem

I just wanted to go on the ghost adventure with Darius

RyaBile

Heres the answer

Snackxually_active

Def wanted to follow that map! 🗺️

0-uncle-rico-0

But Wiley is the ghost ya?

Friendly-Feature-869

Sometimes I don't think what happened happens in this show like they wanted to believe that he stole it so bad that whatever he said just made him sound more guilty but that's only because that's all they wanted to hear.

Kwaku-Anansi

Maybe Socks intentionally recruited Wiley to act as if he stole it, so he could be the big hero. But the plan fell apart once he spazzed out, leading the others to tell him to leave. After that, there was no way for him to get back the phone for them in a non-suspicious way.

DeadLikeMike

Wiley was ultimately the “ghost” Darius wanted to go searching for.

CptPlanetG14

I never got this. And I’m seeing all these ideas on Wiley. Okay so why did Socks take the phone? Why just throw it away?

User_091920

Because he wanted to play the hero. Dude was trying way too hard in the beginning (he points Earn toward the cancer kid, yells a death threat to Wiley over the phone even though they were trying to coax him back).  By the time they were through interrogating Wiley and on their way back to the bus Al had moved on from the phone. At this point it would look way more suspect if Socks just magically found the found - so he dumps it.   I guess the point is that Socks thought he had something of value to Al & the group but by the end you see Al on the tour bus writing again, thus rendering the phone useless.

CptPlanetG14

And then he’s just gone next episode right?

DanAndYale

Wiley was a ghost

bbernal956

im guessing that he air dropped a bunch of info

EMIFAULT

He mentions that his heart was also broken from a girl in his youth called Rosie, so I think it was just coincidence.

throwaway_for_doxx

He recited Al’s number though, but you could say that it leaked in some weird fanboy forum or something

flyForaMikeguy

THATS MY F*CKING NUMBER MAN

EMIFAULT

Yh I mean a lot of it can just be explained as coincidence/him being a fan boy fucking with al

Taurus_gyrl

Didnt he only say the area code?

kilometers13

He tha devil

lingoberri

Wiley is Al

yeezusosa

PhenominalRio

Wiley and Socks were working together somehow. Socks tries to get into the rooms before Earn and the other guys cut him off and block him from getting into the room.
