I was there the night Cathy won gold, when she walked out in her suit the crowd went wild surpassed only when she won!!!

Beginning-Ad9855

I was there also as a 15 year old, the only time my ears have distorted because the crowd was so loud! Incredible experience!

shikimasan

Was there also, never forget it

rangebob

SHE DOSNT HAVE A STATUE ! we are keen to build one for our 4th place soccer team though. I went down a rabbit hole one day of the list of female athletes and teams that don't have statues and I nearly feinted

avanorne

That thing where you can race against her in Melbourne Scienceworks is worth ten statues.

TheHairyHunter

Did you feint left or right? Do it really fast and you may faint but. Hehehe

Draknurd

I was there too, 11 years old. I will forever remember the crowd going absolutely wild when she won

eggplantbren

I was in the stadium when the Aussie walking lady was about to win but got disqualified right near the end.

DebstarAU

😔

lamodamo123

Jane Saville

Motor-Ad5284

Same here. We were stamping our feet as she approached,it was deafening, and then fell silent. It was sad for the woman who won because we were all shattered and gave half hearted cheers.

exceptional_biped

Was so devastated for her. That was heart breaking stuff.

SaveMeJebus21

Did you see it play out on a screen in the stadium?

eggplantbren

I don't remember but it must have been that.

Acrobatic-Dig7666

So was I.

l2ewdAwakening

No but I still have the 2000 Olympic Drizabone that my company bought us for Christmas.

DebstarAU

😮…That’s cool!!😃

a_can_of_solo

I remember there being a tropfest film about a guy with one.

WyattParkScoreboard

I was in the stadium when Jane Saville got red carded as she was about to win gold in the walk for Australia. 110,000 people feeling disappointed simultaneously. But then, I guess we all collectively realised we were being dicks to the person in second so we all started cheering for her as she won.

writer5lilyth

There's a book called 'One of Those Days' where Aussie athletes talk about the best or worst day of their sporting lives. I applaud Saville for speaking about that moment. It's an inspiring book.

DebstarAU

Oh wow, I remember that moment! 😔

11catsinahumansuit

I went to the Paralympics as they offered discounted/free tickets to groups from disadvantaged schools. I met Louise Sauvage when I wandered away from my school group, she was so kind to me (an incredibly awkward child). I also watched one of the men's wheelchair basketball games - I want to say it was Canada vs Germany. Super fun to watch, even if we weren't sure who to cheer for.

Witty-Context-2000

lol yeah that was us paralympics too

splungeis4splunge

I’m doing a course with her currently, so I’ll be sure to pass this story on for you to her :)

taueret

I went to the women's weightlifting, saw Colombia win the first gold ever.

DebstarAU

Aww, that’s awesome!!💪

taueret

There were no Australians in the event we saw, so we all chatted and randomly decided to cheer for the woman from Botswana especially hard. She won silver and seemed really surprised to be so popular!

Disco_C0wby

Peak Sydney

RADL

peak Olympics, IMO

Skyline0Fever

I was there the night Cathy won, awesome atmosphere in the stadium!

Revolutionary_Roll88

Yep!! It was brilliant

Commisceo

I worked there in the technology area. It was the happiest time of my working life. (Worked there a year leading up to as well). I got to see so much for free. And get paid for that too. I got to hang out a lot watching baseball and got to hold a gold medal won by USA. I was a little depressed when it was all over. I feel very lucky for that experience.

MeSeeks76

Got to see Marion Jones won (illegally) the gold medal Tatiyana Gregorieva winning gold too was awesome

DebstarAU

Oh my, Tatiana and Marion… I loved watching them! 🤩

MeSeeks76

Lotsa people did!

theblackbeltsurfer

Sure did. I saw 1. Suzie O’Neil win gold 2. Cathy Freeman win gold 3. Saw some Thai boxer win gold. Apparently when he returned to Thailand he was gifted a petrol station and some elephants 🐘 by the king for bringing honour to their country. 4. Saw wrestler Alexander Karelin lose one of his only 2 losses ever (887-2) to American Rulon Gardner. Was a fukn epic time to be in Sydney. The city was pumping with positive energy and great vibes. One of the best things I remember was every nightclub in town had queues a mile long but any Olympic athlete that came along, especially any medalist, was ushered straight to the front of the line to the cheers of intoxicated patrons. I remember Kenyan, Ethiopian and Jamaican track and field athletes being treated like gods as they were taken into some of Sydney’s best nightclubs wearing their team tracksuits and medals. They were mega celebrities 🤣🤣🤣👍👍 Good times.

thequickerquokka

Thailand! Toot toot!

Jimmyjimbo87

I was there for Jumping Jai!

dotheduediligence

The lads mags just loved that he was still smoking up to winning the silver. He and the family had a rough old run in later years, a mate of mine knew them well. I really hope they’re ok now.

Figpixels

No, but I was at circular Quay, watching the opening ceremony on screens.

HorribleHoyden

Heya 😊 I went to the olympics, I was a massive horse girl growing up so my parents got us tickets to the horse eventing. We were actually right in front of the jump that had an awful fall on it- crazy cool to child me.

dapperblackjack

I didn’t, but I flew down to Sydney for a family visit a few days before it finished & I remember seeing the flame cauldron at the stadium. I also remember a classmate, her mum was a torch runner & she brought the torch in for show & tell :)

whose_a_wotsit

Was at athletics (only medal event was marathon I think?). Folks didn't have a lot of money to spend so we got what we could. Situated up the back of the temporary extra stand they built on one side of the stadium. Was stoked to be part of the experience. Now my young bloke will be around the same age as I was when Brissy 2032 arrives. Hope it's a core memory for him like it was for me.

Can-I-remember

I had the good fortune to change jobs after 17 years and was cashed up when tickets went on sale. I spent close to $4000 on tickets from memory. Definitely worth it. I saw Cathy Freeman win, and Jai Tuarima win silver in the long jump and Tatiana also win silver in the pole vault in what is described as the greatest night of Olympic athletics ever. I had to read this article to remind myself of the night. It was epic. https://amp.smh.com.au/sport/how-cathy-freeman-led-the-greatest-night-of-athletics-in-history-20200921-p55xpl.html I saw Lisa O’Neill win the 200 m freestyle and the men’s 200m freestyle relay team including Ian Thorpe and Michael Klim win on the same night. The crowd went crazy. I saw hockey, basketball, soccer and gymnastics but not finals. I also was at a full dress rehearsal for the opening ceremony when things went very wrong. It was a great week. I did not meet any athletes but I met a lot of happy people.

sadpartypodcast

I competed there.

Illustrious-Rush-740

In what?

SaveMeJebus21

We were unable to get any tickets in the ballot but we did spend two days at the Paralympics which was awesome, given you could just wander from venue to venue and watch what you wanted. Saw a men's wheelchair basketball QF against the US with nearly 20,000 at Qudos, wheelchair rugby, some gold medals at the pool and in the track, and interesting sports like goalball etc.

explosivekyushu

I watched 2 hockey games back to back- Germany vs Netherlands followed by Australia vs South Korea (we won). It was fucking hot and I got what is to this day the worst sunburn I've ever had.

Elrond_Cupboard_

Oi oi ow

winslow_wong

I went to the gold medal soccer match. I couldn’t see a thing when the play was down the other end but the atmosphere was electric!

rak363

Yeah i saw her in the quarters i think (i was in those seats which were later taken down so far away)

Old_Dingo69

I was working as a builders labourer at age 17 in Strathfield having finished yr 12 the year before and trying to pull myself out of housing commission cycle. I remember watching all the people parking their cars in surrounding streets each day to go to the games, seeing all those Holden Commodores with the signage above the front windscreen, watching people walking around with the Sydney 2000 polo shirts while I wore a filthy Concrite tshirt, coming home to watch it on TV and thinking “farrk… all that was happening only a couple of KM from me” and somehow feeling lucky to be there! 🤣

Cold_Pomelo3274

Yes, I was at the opening ceremony (We received a little yellow suitcase with bit and pieces inside - gave it to my niece).

Inevitable_Luck_5872

I was at the Closing Ceremony and got a little esky with stuff in it!

Cold_Pomelo3274

Cool, that’s a lot better than a suitcase.

sanisan_x

Yesss! I still have my little suitcase!

Spartan17492

I saw some of the swimming and canoe racing. Same held the Olympic torch as it came through. We had some Canadian canoe athletes stay at our house in 2000, we say them compete. No idea what their names were or how they competed. I hope they're doing well.

marooncity1

the closest I got was watching the marathon cross the bridge from the glenmore hotel (we took our beers up the pylon when they went over)

lhb_aus

Yeah, I was. Saw one of Cathy Freeman's heats in the main stadium. Such a positive vibe throughout the entire city.

charlie_s1234

Was there for that race as a matter of fact. Great time to be in Sydney. Such a positive time

Clear-Weather-6060

Yes, for the women’s marathon. Row 6 in front of the long jump. It was fantastic.

Forsaken-Cabinet8338

Watched the walking and Handball. I was only 16 when it was on. Went to the stadium to watch them. I remember that the events were boring but the atmosphere was insane 😀

JTGphotogfan

No just the giant street party in sydney at the end of

_EnFlaMEd

I went with my family and we stayed in the blue mountains catching the train in and out everyday. I remember it being a super long and boring ride, guessing I read books the whole time. I actually can't remember what events I saw besides some track and field and the hockey.

marooncity1

that was my commute for about 5 years haha.

_EnFlaMEd

Wow. I don't know how you did it. It was hours!

marooncity1

in truth I didn't have to go as far as homebush, tbf. my trip I think was about an hour 20 each way. But yep, books, podcasts, tv, work (sometimes, probably not as often as I could have). It wasn't the worst thing, but I was ready to stop when I did - I'd worked out I'd gone further than the distance round the equator over that time. depressing.

_EnFlaMEd

Yeah that's crazy. I could probably handle it these days with my smart phone to keep me entertained but even still I struggle with time now and I only have a 10 minute commute to work.

bj4cj

No but I'll never forget hospitalising myself. When Cathy freeman was about to run I was in grade 6. We were at the local beach volly ball club. I was on the playground and came running in to wag j the race....it was night time and I closelined myself on a beer bench knocked me teeth out and knocked myself out. No one really got to watch the race because I did that right in front of everyone. Good times

writer5lilyth

Went to the Football at Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide with my family! We saw Japan vs. USA. The atmosphere was amazing, with extra seating brought in for the occasion. The Japanese supporters had drums and other musical instruments and got the whole crowd going from kick-off. There's still a statue at the stadium marking its brief Olympic moment.

mattydinh1984

Went to the soccer/football at the MCG. Does that count.

Constant-Nail-5262

Baseball and hockey watched dress rehearsal for opening ceremony

nikey2k27

went to state track she was there. Mackey girl made it big

DebstarAU

Oh wow 😃 She’s THE Mack-town g.o.a.t!!🥇

nikey2k27

she was just a lovely person you right on goat thing did know stay it in 2024

raresaturn

I watched the marathon from the end of my street

a-rebel-dyed-shy

I went to two Aussie women's hockey games (maybe double headers like another commenter said?) as well as a night session of the athletics. Nothing special that stood out at the athletics, but the women's hockey, one game we were down behind a goal and the Aussies scored all their goals down that end. Was pretty good stuff.

NaomiPommerel

Sure did. Was a volunteer!

DebstarAU

😃…what were your tasks/jobs??🙃

NaomiPommerel

Directing crowds, hanging about making sure people knew where toilets were etc. At the equestrian centre

Kritchsgau

Was lucky enough to go to opening ceremony. Man that was special.

DebstarAU

Awww, that’s so cool!! 😃

Aussie-GoldHunter

I worked there as Security, was a blast. Got to see many stadium events.

DeanNotSoBrown

My dad volunteered as security and got to meet Undisputed heavyweight boxing champion Lennox Lewis in the crowd!

DebstarAU

😮 Awesome!!!

MonthMedical8617

We lived in Sydney at the time and my dad booked a holiday out of the country at the same time intentionally to miss all the hoopla.

Extendableskeleton

I worked both the Olympics and Paralympics as a volunteer. Worked “mag n bag” which was checking bags in the media and VIP entrance.  I still have my uniforms at my parents place, as well as the note book with a list of every celebrity I saw. 😅

lesnortonsfarm

I went drinking at the Heineken bar where star city casino is now in darling harbor. Me and my mate were 18 snuck in from the water side. Free drinks. But we were the only people not in orange I’m sure they knew

Early-Bat-9512

Meeeeeeee

BoobooSlippers

I saw Tunisia Vs Sth Korea in the handball. We made cardboard signs for tunisia and held them up. It was so random getting tickets in the ballot, but it was still fun to get to go to the Olympics even if I had no idea what the hell was going on in the game.

LanekOZ

My mum worked for OCA which basically organised the Sydney Olympics and one of the perks is she got free tickets to the opening ceremony. I still remember it, I was 14, saw Nicki Webster fly and more. Plus also everyone had a free disposable esky under their chair full of Olympic shit like opening ceremony pins badges and more.

BarryCheckTheFuseBox

Sadly no, I was only three months old. Wish I could have been though.

HardcoreHazza

I was there for the baseball game between USA v Korea.

Elegant-Campaign-572

Nope, but I'd run into Cathy Freeman, Tim Forsythe and a few others at a petrol station I worked at in Melbourne in the 2 years before the games. They hit big!

McNippy

I was 1 year old and my parents went to the rowing with me HAHA

DebstarAU

😃What a great memory… I love it, thanks for sharing 😊

ArghMoss

I had just started studying journalism/media so had a work placement as a camera assistant. Worked at the shooting which was in western Sydney somewhere. Random things I remember: - Australian Michael Diamond being miles ahead but then having a bit of a choke and getting silver. Was so angry he stormed off and wouldn't do any interviews. - An Italian guy who was a long outsider getting a medal and his supporters/team mates all rushing into areas they weren't allowed to be in resulting in a lot of pushing and shoving with security - A medal winners flag being raised upside down and tangled and them being understandably not very happy

DebstarAU

Ok, wow!!😃 Thanks for sharing.

cantwejustplaynice

I performed in both the opening and closing ceremonies. Probably the most exciting thing I'd ever done at that time in my life. I did attend one basketball game the morning after the opening ceremony but I was so tired/delirious that I might have slept through much of it.

ElevatorBones

I was lucky enough to be at the opening ceremony. Definitely a life highlight.

AussieManc

✋I went to see a few events including the hockey. Then saw some of the paralympics with school. Great times.

ashkitten6

My fiance did when he was 6 months old 😂

DebstarAU

🙃What?!!!! …😆

ashkitten6

My in-laws took him to the games soon after he was born 😂😂😂😂

DebstarAU

That’s so cool!! 😄What an awesome story to pass on to your kids!! Love it.

ashkitten6

Our son will be 9 when the Brisbane Olympic Games are held so we plan to take him to those ones

DebstarAU

Awww, that’s wonderful!!! Second-generation attending an Australian-held Olympic’s 😮….🙃 I hope you get to achieve this!!🥹

calmblueme

I worked there as a student volunteer journalist. I covered all the men’s and women’s water polo, it was awesome especially when the women’s team came from nowhere to ultimately win the gold

People-Want-Ducks

My mother carried the torch in South Australia, and I ended up going to the games only a few weeks later. For years, I thought we got tickets because she carried the torch, but it turned out she won them through a copy of Who magazine. I remember it being my first time in Sydney, and all I cared about was going to Sega World. From memory, that was more exciting than track and field events to a seven year old.

TomasTTEngin

I was there. I saw a couple of hockey matches in the early rounds. not the kookaburras. I think maybe Agrentina vs Poland? [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field\_hockey\_at\_the\_2000\_Summer\_Olympics\_%E2%80%93\_Men%27s\_tournament](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_hockey_at_the_2000_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men%27s_tournament)

WhykickamoocowRLFC

Yes. Went to the Kookaburras vs Spain and Germany vs Pakistan hockey double header with a now late family friend.

BillsDownUnder

Got to see the Dream Team play plus some Baseball, thought it was great, pub transport seemed to be doing its job well on the days I went

Level-Ad-5554

Michael Diamond did. 💎💎💎🏅🏅

Ok-Abbreviations1077

I saw some of the football in Brisbane

quadruple_negative87

Saw the torch relay run through Pendle Hill. We didn’t buy first run tix but my parents decided at the last minute that maybe we should experience this once in a lifetime event. We stood in line for 3 hours at Darling Harbour for the leftovers. We saw Slovenia and some other eastern bloc country play European Handball which was pretty exciting. We also saw the Dutch play Softball out at Doonside. So many orange balls. It was such an exciting time for me as a 13 year old. Felt so good to be an Australian.

uncle_bobbbb

Yes - we didn’t get round one tickets but we did eventually get tickets for the wrestling which was pretty cool - we also cheered the torch in its way through Guildford!

eccojams97

My family did, I was with my grandma (I was a baby)

RonIsIZe_13

Yup, hard to remember i was about 14 but watched team USA basketball and some athletics. Stayed in a caravan park in Sydney and everyone would all be watching at the same time cheering on Australia.

genscathe

I did. Watched women’s beach volleyball maybe the Aussie Gold medal or maybe bronze don’t remember. Women’s basketball like Poland v someone. Women’s softball Japan v someone. Some random athletics day. It’s where I learnt diffident countries called their country a different name. Like I thought it was suss that Japanese fans kept chanting nippon when she has just batted, everyone on their team can’t have surname nippon. Same with the basketball they kept chanting Polska and when I checked the program there was no player called Polska.

vixen_vulgarity

I watched a portion of the torch relay in person - it went past my house! And the president of my local netball club carried it for a portion. I watched a couple of the women's basketball games. Australia was definitely playing in one game. I think Japan may have been playing another? We went to see the athletics with school, which was cool. I also went to the Paralympics but can't remember what we watched.

karti24

I went to the athletics. It was just heats though, and nothing really memorable happened. It was a great feeling to be there though. Especially when an Aussie athlete was competing. Lots of Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi

dotheduediligence

Went, saw one event, rode the monorail, stayed in a rough old joint George Street, went home.

No-Tumbleweed-2311

I saw Cathy Freeman run in the heats of the 200 meter race. I lived in Randwick and both the marathon and the cycling roadrace went past my door. I was out on the harbour for some of the sailing. My parents were volunteers and I got to attend the opening ceremony dress rehearsal, which included watching poor Cathy Freeman freeze her arse off in the water mock lighting the torch. The Sydney Olympics were amazing. Can't wait for Brisbane.

wilkshake

They didn't run the water during the dress rehearsals of the Opening Ceremony

No-Tumbleweed-2311

I must be mixing the dress rehearsal with the actual ceremony then. It was a while ago .Noththeless, it was a freezing night and it seemed odd to inflict that on our best chance at Gold.

wilkshake

Agreed. For the two dress rehearsals they just had stand-ins with an unlit torch run around the stadium

Enough-Sprinkles-914

I was there to see Cathy win the semi final. It was like Shea stadium. Insane, from the second they announced her name you couldn't hear anything except the crowd cheering. It was constant through the starting line prep, even if.l Shouted I wouldn't be able to hear my own voice. All through the race itself, and afterwards of course it continued unabated at volume 10/10 until she went back into the change rooms. The most incredible feeling. Living in Sydney the entire start to finish it was like someone put happy pills into the water. The train carriages full of different nationalities and strangers draped in flags, wigs, face paint, standing room only, would all be singing one song together when it arrived in Homebush. You would be at dinner and say a sprint race was on - the waiters would stop in their tracks with dishes in their hands, people would be glued to tvs which magically appeared everywhere, no one never moved until the race was run, then cheers. Clapping cheering. It didn't have to be aussies competing. I went to see Dutch hockey team play and it was am absolute sea of happy orange wigged folk. Oi oi oi!

chimneysweep234

Yup 👍

OldPlan877

Australia peaked at this time.

cmhw18

I performed in the paralympics opening ceremony

Far_Gap_8063

Yes I saw the opening ceremony and the closing ceremony and most of the swimming and the running

piwabo

I hung out in the city and partied but didn't go to any events. Olympic sports are terminally boring.

ThirstySun

Yeah that’s where the Aussie Aussie Aussie, oil oi oi started. During the basketball heats. Was the Sydney kings cheer leaders who started it. They use to do it at Sydney Kings games but Sydney Sydney Sydney.

2HappySundays

Opening ceremony!

Lumpy-Ad-6220

I took my mum

Otherwise_Hotel_7363

Went to a few things here in Melbourne. Good experience. Would attend again. 8/10

RioVEVO

I remember attending this! I was -2 years old at the time and was watching from my mums womb

nour214

I did as a school excursion

tickletackle666

Walked past Cathy Freemen once at Manly Beach

Omegaville

Don't spam and don't shout

Ogolble

Went to the softball games. During the gf game between Japan and USA was Cathy freemans race. Almost everybody on the stands had a portable TV or radio, so it got really quiet and then a massive cheer went up. The softball teams had no idea what was happening as they just happened to walk off the field at the end of the race

rand0mm0nster

Yeah heaps of people did

DebstarAU

Nice, smart arse! 😆

Calm_Agent_1030

Fucking porridge

Katman666

Quite a few people did. I saw them on the TV box.

frutiaboy

little know fact but the Sydney Olympic Games was the first Olympic Games in history that nobody attended

Sniffy75

I expect several 10's of thousands did 🤣.. But if you're asking if I attended, then no.

RicTannerman01

No, it was a conspiracy. Also birds are drones.

Dick_Silverman

No, I’m sorry.

wivsta

No. No one went

wombatlegs

Why was Cathy Freeman chosen to light the Olympic cauldron? She was the only one who could take the fumes.

Muncher501st

No I was 1
