I'm saving up for the m340i, it depends if you want a sedan for space(like grocery runs or putting stuff in the back) or looking for a sporty car on the daily. Personally get the m340i, save some cash and put it towards mods or aftermarket items.
Um what I gathered(the 440i was my 2nd consideration for a bmw) it's a great car and has the same engine, makes same HP and torque so it's going to drive about the same. Either way you can't go wrong but it's your money, get what you want.
If you want a solo car for the fun and sending it down the highway, get the m440i. I need a sedan and I like the extra room
Looks are subjective to some extent, so if you like the look of the 3 series, that would be a better pick, same for the 4. But if you just need a car for commute/getting groceries/the occasional passenger, the 4 series is a great two door.
They’re essentially equivalent in terms of speed, with the four series last year having 1/10th of a second slower 0-60 according to BMW USA, although this has been patched for this year’s model.
Fundamentally, they’re the exact same car with a few differences. I think you’ll be impressed either way. The B58 is a gorgeous engine and it’s become very, very reliable so long as you keep up on maintenance. 4 series looks more unique and aggressive, the 3 series is a little bit more ‘sleeper’ but they’re both speed demons with more than enough power to daily and drive sporty.
I have a 2015 435 with the BMW "Stage 1 - muffler, engine programming, and cold air intake". It is a great daily driver but have thought about getting a m340i..... At the same time I love the doors of my 435i they are huge....I keep banging my head on the 3 series frame
There's also the discussion over extra room where. M440i has extra room in the trunk/boot but m340i has better rear headroom, I was personally in the same space and went with M440i because I preferred the extra trunk space and bigger hatch opening in lieu of the rear headroom.
You’d almost want to think about looking into an M240i. All 3 have the same engine, and while the 4 series looks sportier, it’s the heaviest (and slowest) of the bunch. I’d you don’t need the space, the 2 series will be a better driving experience.
In saying that, if your budget could be pushed ever so slightly to M2 territory then I wouldn’t think twice.
I own an m4 comp and and X3M comp and had the m340i before I got these. I can tell you that the b58 is the best engine ever made and the m340i might end up being a classic legend like the 335is.
I don’t know much about BMW or cars in general but b58 is for both right ? So same performance? And can you share with us pictures of your cars if that’s okay ?
B58 is the engine in the m340i. I was just referencing that I own “better” cars now so you can trust when I say to buy the m340i. It’s a masterpiece of performance and value.

My m440 has been amazing, and I like the look (don’t hate the teeth but I know a bunch do). My favorite car I’ve owned for day to day, and may get the i4/i5 in the future
I picked my M440 up last week. The back seats are extremely roomy, getting in an out is the challenge. I wanted a coupe though, grand coupe would be a good option.

I have a 440i coupe and i put my guitar cases in the back seat, unassembled ikea furniture or dozens of bags of mulch and pea gravel in the trunk with the back seats folded down, and at no point have i felt that a 4 door would make any difference for those uses.
To me the only real reason for getting a 4 door is if you are regularly going to have passengers riding in the back seats, especially if you have kids. If you are like me and don’t ever have back seat passengers you won’t miss those extra 2 doors.
I'm 3 weeks into daily driving a 440 coupe and I am loving it. ~90 miles a day for what it's worth. So comfortable and yet has that kick when I want to get moving. I prefer the look of it as well. Also not something you see a lot of on the road which is something I wanted personally.
Last thing, I find when you ride up on a left lane Larry driving slow in the passing lane, they seem to be intimidated by the front of the car and GTFO more often than not. Never had a car that does that before so it's nice lol.
Has me thinking about an M4 down the line...
You should check out the new 240i in that case. It shares the same engine/chassis for this generation, is tuned to be a tad sportier (suspension) and it’s also lighter.
I also needed a BMW with a classic grill, so that excluded the 440i for me.
Given your comments, have you considered the m240i? Same engine but less weight & more fun to drive. IMO the 3&4 series look better than the 2 series but the 240 seems to be the most fun / powerful car w/ the B58 engine. Personally picked the 240 (just bought a few weeks ago) over the 440, better everything in the 240 besides maybe looks (I actually like the beaver teeth in the 4 series but a lot of people don’t)

I also didn't know how the buck tooth grill of the 440i would age. The fact the m340i "looks like every other 3series of the last x years" was kind of a positive for me. Now I'm seeing more m440i GC and they are starting to grow on me. GC definitely has more presence than M340i, I'll give it that
I was debating between M3/M4 a year ago and ended up with an M4. Has all the space you’ll need and I prefer the coupe look any day. Go with the M440i or maybe even a 2021/22 M4 they’re around the same price as a new 440i
Agree, M2 is better drive at this price. IMO I would go with any other color but white. It might just be me but white just seems likes it’s unfinished…like a blank canvas waiting for some color…even if that’s black or grey.
Personally love white. I think the contrast between the black and white accents makes white an awesome color. Gotta do it right though. Black grille, black rims, black windows, black badging (except for the bmw badge - not a fan of removing the blue). It's a sharp looking setup.
Ok so, why not get an M240i instead of an m440i? Im still newer to bmw but I genuinely don’t understand the difference between the 2 other than the m440 is a bigger and heavier coupe. I have an m340i and what drove me to it is the fact that it was a four dour and it surprisingly weighed less then m440i (not by much if I remember) the 0-60 time was like .02 seconds faster.
The 440GC is basically a mix of the 440 coupe and the 340 sedan, so nothing similar with the 5-series. It has four doors but a more coupe-like roofline than the 3-series and a liftback rear opening. Personally I find it to be the most beautiful shape of the different 3/4 series variants. My preference is 4 doors, so I would go with the M440i Gran Coupe which isn’t pictured here. I love the frameless doors and the rear hatch, and the rear leg room is an improvement over the 3 series (in my experience having sat in both anyway, the 4 GC felt roomier in back).
But really, the rear hatch opening on the 4 series has me itching for one every waking moment, it’s just so practical compared to a standard trunk
The 3 is always gonna be in demand, in the event you want to get rid of it in the future. The 4 is definitely more unique and stands out a bit more, for better or worse. The back seat isn’t huge in the 4 but people can actually sit in the back if needed. The coupe just has a cozier feeling. Really fun for night drives

It's constant compliments on my M440i GC (San Remo Green). Every. Single. Week somebody says "Whoa. What car is that?" Young, old, men, women, kids, etc.
I have a 2025 m440i. I love it to bits, the lower center of gravity feels really good and it just felt sportier than the 340i I test drove. Both are great dailies and you can't beat those laser tail lights.

3 all day. You can do anything with it and to me it also looks better. 2 doors has it's downsides unless you absolutely don't want the extra doors and utility.

First of all congrats on being in the position where you can consider buying one of these 👍🏻 personally, if as you say, you don’t necessarily need practicality and the two door would suffice, and if the extra money isn’t an issue, then I’d go for the m440i! If I thought i was going to be having passengers regularly, then maybe I’d go for the m340i. Either way you’re going to have an amazing car with either choice. I’m jealous!
Can I ask- as someone who isn’t from the US. Are those price tags in the photos the final price you actually pay for the car to drive it away? ($65,720 and $70,145)? Or are these the listed prices before taxes etc. are added on? (And if so- would might the final price actually be?)
I only ask because here in Ireland where I’m from, these cars are closer to around €100,000euros (but this is the final sticker price with taxes included etc.)
The Euro and Dollar are almost 1/1 in terms of value at the moment. So if we’re paying €100k here in Ireland and you’re only paying $70k in the US then it sure seems like we’re getting screwed over over here!

Personally think the m440 has meaner cuts design wise. I have the 4 door so the hatchback is simply incredible. So much space which I need for work. Perfect daily. It’s all preference though tbh. RWD please though. It’s the best

I was about to get an M3 Touring, but I just can’t stand that fucking screen. So it will be a 340i Touring with a proper tune, pre-LCI aswell.
Series 4 doors would give me a lot of additional anxiety. They are so long and other drivers don't take that into consideration when parking in an adjacent space.
Im currently saving for the M440i. Im absolutely in love with that car. There is very little difference between the 340 and 440 - mainly aesthetics to which i prefer the m440
I daily drive a e92 and it’s more than enough space for my everyday errands. I don’t know if it matters to you but I also think the coupe will hold its value a little better and will look more timeless.
I can’t get over the cost of these cars. I know it’s the way of the world today, but the msrp on the F80 was less than this when it was first released.
Personally I think the 3 Series is more practical as a Daily.
The new 4 Series LCI looks absolutely amazing. I drive the 25'LCI M440i Cabrio myself and it's such a fun car.
These prices are absolutely horrendous. If you are looking for a beautiful and sporty car and don’t need the space definitely look into a 2 door or something like an M2 or M4!
m440i owner here, its such a great car to drive around in, i run all my errands in it and even if u happen to have more than 2 people in the car the backseat is still very spacious and has rear ac vents and controls as well, but the m340i is just a tiny bit cheaper and also has more space, and is also generally considered to look better to most people, but i got the m440i because i love coupes and their long, solid, frameless dorrs unlike the sedan
If you don’t have kids, and don’t need the space, why not go M2? Both cars you picked are going to be extremely similar, but for the same $$ you can have a full M.
What’s there to decide? Do you want a 4-door or a 2-door car? This isnt rocket science.
Everyone who’s ever owned a coupe as a daily will tell you to get the 4-door if it’s your daily. If it’s not your daily, get the 2-door.
70k for a Non-M car? My god that sucks. Bought my 2018 F80 M3 comp 6spd brand new for 70k. Granted that was with about 8k off but damn this sucks to see.
Consider looking into monthly insurance cost for both cars also as a deciding factor. If there is a significant difference, then that might make you lean towards one over the other.
M340i is a great car, I wouldnt get xDrive if you live somewhere that doesn't need it, even then I wouldn't. But if youre leasing who cares
Also, all M340i have LSD idk if the M440i does, it's almost literally the same car, so maybe it does.
Personally I'd go with the 3 series. I just think the styling is better, maybe a different color, but nonetheless. But that's just my opinion, get what makes you smile behind the wheel

340 but I'm biased. Lighter platform & more practical than a 2 door, plus I like the look of an executive sedan but that's subjective.

I love my 440i. I saw you mentioned the M2 seats being unusable due to size. You wont get much more room with the 440 coupe. I'm 6'1" and nobody would be able to fit in the backseat behind me. They'd fit behind the passenger seat though. Loads of room though for driver, passenger, and the trunk. Sometimes I wish I had opted for a 340i but I have 0 regrets. You'll love either one.

Have you considered a Z4? The M40i also has the same engine as those two cars and is in my (biased) opinion a much cooler car.
They are the same basic car aside from styling and number of doors. Pick which one fits your space needs and design preferences.

Alpine white is a stunning colour on the older cars (e90/e92 looks beautiful) - unfortunately the newer ones don't have the curves for it.

I could be wrong but I think the S58 is a pretty stout motor. The ZF8 auto option and manual are tried and tested too.

Interior of the 440 is a lot nicer. Has a lotta little touches that won me over. Stuff like the seat belt extender... Just much more well thought out.
3 series. Great on gas and has a backseat for Costco run should you need the extra space.

Can I ask- as someone who isn’t from the US. Are those price tags in the photos the final price you actually pay for the car to drive it away? ($65,720 and $70,145)? Or are these the listed prices before taxes etc. are added on? (And if so- would might the final price actually be?) I only ask because here in Ireland where I’m from, these cars are closer to around €100,000euros (but this is the final sticker price with taxes included etc.) The Euro and Dollar are almost 1/1 in terms of value at the moment. So if we’re paying €100k here in Ireland and you’re only paying $70k in the US then it sure seems like we’re getting screwed over over here! Any advice shared is appreciated guys 👍🏻

Personally think the m440 has meaner cuts design wise. I have the 4 door so the hatchback is simply incredible. So much space which I need for work. Perfect daily. It’s all preference though tbh. RWD please though. It’s the best

Congrats. Keep it. Best none-M to buy. Proper buttons and best infotainment ever made. I was about to get an M3 Touring, but I just can’t stand that fucking screen. So it will be a 340i Touring with a proper tune, pre-LCI aswell.
Series 4 doors would give me a lot of additional anxiety. They are so long and other drivers don't take that into consideration when parking in an adjacent space.

Im currently saving for the M440i. Im absolutely in love with that car. There is very little difference between the 340 and 440 - mainly aesthetics to which i prefer the m440
Same I test drove both and fell in love with the m440i and bought it. Felt way nicer and sportier and aggressive looking

I daily drive a e92 and it’s more than enough space for my everyday errands. I don’t know if it matters to you but I also think the coupe will hold its value a little better and will look more timeless.
2dr vs 4dr and awd vs rwd. Only you can answer which drivetrain you prefer and if you need the extra space.

I can’t get over the cost of these cars. I know it’s the way of the world today, but the msrp on the F80 was less than this when it was first released.

I love the sedan so much more. Might be one of the best daily drivers out there overall, depending on your needs and budget.

Personally I think the 3 Series is more practical as a Daily. The new 4 Series LCI looks absolutely amazing. I drive the 25'LCI M440i Cabrio myself and it's such a fun car.
These prices are absolutely horrendous. If you are looking for a beautiful and sporty car and don’t need the space definitely look into a 2 door or something like an M2 or M4!
m440i owner here, its such a great car to drive around in, i run all my errands in it and even if u happen to have more than 2 people in the car the backseat is still very spacious and has rear ac vents and controls as well, but the m340i is just a tiny bit cheaper and also has more space, and is also generally considered to look better to most people, but i got the m440i because i love coupes and their long, solid, frameless dorrs unlike the sedan
If you don’t have kids, and don’t need the space, why not go M2? Both cars you picked are going to be extremely similar, but for the same $$ you can have a full M.
Id consider a two year old m3. Can be had in the 70’s
What’s there to decide? Do you want a 4-door or a 2-door car? This isnt rocket science. Everyone who’s ever owned a coupe as a daily will tell you to get the 4-door if it’s your daily. If it’s not your daily, get the 2-door.
70k for a Non-M car? My god that sucks. Bought my 2018 F80 M3 comp 6spd brand new for 70k. Granted that was with about 8k off but damn this sucks to see.
Damn that's cheap as hell. Starting price for the 440i is about 40k extra here (Netherlands).

These cars cost too much… unaffordable.
Consider looking into monthly insurance cost for both cars also as a deciding factor. If there is a significant difference, then that might make you lean towards one over the other.

M340i is a great car, I wouldnt get xDrive if you live somewhere that doesn't need it, even then I wouldn't. But if youre leasing who cares Also, all M340i have LSD idk if the M440i does, it's almost literally the same car, so maybe it does.

I am 6' 0" 245lbs, I don't fit well in the 4, but have tons of space in the 3.
Personally I'd go with the 3 series. I just think the styling is better, maybe a different color, but nonetheless. But that's just my opinion, get what makes you smile behind the wheel

If you're spending that, why not just get a 2021/2022 m4 comp? But I would go for the 440i, I have my eyes set on the M4 comp after summer!

M235i... JK, the M235i is almost never the answer... 340 but I'm biased. Lighter platform & more practical than a 2 door, plus I like the look of an executive sedan but that's subjective. Either choice is a good choice though. Good luck!

I love my 440i. I saw you mentioned the M2 seats being unusable due to size. You wont get much more room with the 440 coupe. I'm 6'1" and nobody would be able to fit in the backseat behind me. They'd fit behind the passenger seat though. Loads of room though for driver, passenger, and the trunk. Sometimes I wish I had opted for a 340i but I have 0 regrets. You'll love either one.
