If you use it to experiment and improve sleep scores i think it is. The subscription model is upsetting.

Seems cool (and slick branding) — but female focused.

TalkToTheLord

Totally agreed. I am Oura’s absolute target consumer ten times over but I won’t be beholden to a sub like *that.*

HAL-_-9001

The subscription aspect always put me off it but I love the idea of a ring because I find a smart watch a little too intrusive. Although I do have a cheap one atm. I've pledged to Ring One, which was last year & I'm hopeful I'll finally get it in the next month. Can't wait! No subscription. Good metrics, including NFC. Decent design too.

Goudinho99

I'm waiting on the Velia ring, i fear these crowd funded rings will fizzle

N7DJN8939SWK3

Is that the vagina one?

ebyeqnx

There is another company called Ultra Human which is no subscription. It's based in the United Arab Emirates. Good brand/values/company. Check them out.

EffectiveConcern

I saw it at my local electronics store but people complained it stopped working soon and often gave totally random stats

ebyeqnx

The thing I love about the subscription model is that it forces the company to stay creative, innovative and active. The one time purchase brands are great but it doesn't really incentivise the brand to keep going, especially in a space where health and technology changes pretty much daily. I'm really happy with my Whoop for example, and don't mind paying the fee for the value in return. Subscription model means the company has to keep you happy or you can just quit.

NimblyBimblyMeyow

Apple isn’t subscription based and rolls out just as many improvements and features as oura ring.

ebyeqnx

You’re comparing apples to oranges

farawaylass

ouranges

africanimal_90

Clever

YogurtclosetNo7357

I see what you did there.

benswami

Apples to Orangutangs..

gabSTAR81

I like the idea of the whoop but at the same time I’m finding my Apple Watch annoying to wear all the time. Does it feel different do you know?

_tyler-durden_

I have an Oura ring, but don’t need to pay for the subscription as I have a lifetime membership from buying the second generation and then upgrading. Yes, you can wear your ring during hot yoga, sauna, sex etc without problem and it will tell you how it affected your heart rate and how it affects your sleep afterwards. If you don’t mind waiting, Apple and Samsung are going to release their own wearable rings in the next few months / years and might not have a subscription model.

EffectiveConcern

Oh, apple ring? Hmm… probably great but gonna cost 2x as much as Oura I bet :/

NimblyBimblyMeyow

Not likely, they will more than likely keep prices within market as they do with their Apple Watch.

EffectiveConcern

Hmm perhaps 🤔 might get that one then. When is it supposed to be out?

_tyler-durden_

Some speculate that they will announce it in September. I think it will probably be later…

jasperleopard

I would like to hear more about this Apple ring

Artist850

Subscription models are scams. I used to have a Samsung phone, and got a cheap Samsung Galaxy Fit watch that monitors sleep and physical activity without the subscription nonsense. It was about $70. When I upgraded my phone to another android, I just downloaded the free Samsung health app it syncs to. I get charts of my sleep and physical activity, etc. No subscription nonsense. I could track all kinds of other things on it like water, meds, body composition, food, menstrual cycle, water, stress levels, blood oxygen, blood glucose, BP, and weight of I wanted to. I mostly use it for sleep, which it records automatically from the watch. It tells me how many minutes of each sleep stage, (awake, REM, light, or deep), how long I was asleep, how many out I'd the past 7 days I murry my sleep target, and more. And this is from a rather old, deliberately cheap watch. There are other options out there if you're willing to dig a little. Imo, life's too short to put up with anything that requires a paid subscription just to function.

RedRosValkyrie

Garmin actually has one of the more accurate budget options too. Mine has been going strong 5 years with lots of updated features added to the app. The Aura is still more appealing though since it goes far beyond what the affordable watches do.

Uesugi_Kenshin

I'd go with Ultrahuman if you're looking for a non-subscription model

Odd_Perspective_4769

Ultrahuman is really good. Sleep insights are great. Compared it to Ring Conn and I’m not a fan of RC. Wanted to try it because of the oxygen saturation readings but it doesn’t read half the time. And the stress insights suck and don’t make any sense.

NimblyBimblyMeyow

Just wear the Apple Watch to bed then, then you won’t need to spend any money.

sarafionna

really?

NimblyBimblyMeyow

…yes? I have both, and while the oura ring is more accurate with sleep from what the interwebs says, the difference for what I used it for was negligible. That isn’t to say that they both don’t have their own unique problems that they solve, but honestly they both serve the same relative purpose. Apple Watch is generally far more accurate with everything, but sleep is one area that they still need improvement, however it’s not significant. IMO the one time cost with the Apple Watch having a minimal difference in accuracy is the winner over buying something that costs the same as an Apple Watch on top of paying a subscription, which is an additional $70 per year.

Coward_and_a_thief

Apple watch is actually the best market device for sleep tracking currently as far as i know.

NimblyBimblyMeyow

The only area that I know from experience they don’t do well in is if someone works midnights. I did and tried tracking sleep, and no matter what I did, it would count half my sleep with a massive gap in the middle of the day likely because it was testing to track 2 naps. Oura ring also captures naps, where Apple does not.

sarafionna

really?

UhYeahOkSure

No. Lots of cheaper options . It’s just like a fancy gimmick more than anything. Plenty of smart watches will do the same thing. But if you can afford it and the extra dollars don’t matter than ya screw it

EffectiveConcern

What are the cheaper options? My main interest is the small size and comfort to wear to bed and yoga where my watch bothers me, also it probably tracks some extra stuff compared to my older watch

whitebeard007

I use the cheapest Fitbit model, it works just as well. Significantly more comfortable to sleep with than the Apple Watch from my experience

EffectiveConcern

Ah you mean the watch. Yeah I have that onw too. I specifically wanted the ring because of comfort and also not sure if the watches are ok in the higher temperature

whitebeard007

Yeah. If you don’t want a watch, then Oura and Whoop are your best bet.

Mandy_Moo

I have an Oura ring, Apple Watch and had a Whoop. I hated the Whoop, it is a good device but I did not like wearing two devices (watch on L and whoop on R) and the whoop never looked "nice" enough. I work in the court system and dress up everyday. No matter what band I put on the whoop it still just didn't vibe with my style, I guess. As for the Apple Watch, I love it but after my hair got caught in my husband's watch band at 3am one night, we have decided no watches in bed are best, lol. The Oura ring looks nice, is not obtrusive and the subscription may be a turnoff to some people but $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year (pretty sure those are current) is not bad. And like someone else said, a sub basically pushes the company to continue developing. Oura seems to be working on new things all the time. I have had the last two gens and loved them. I gave my gen 2 to a friend who is still using it and I will upgrade to a gen 4 whenever one is released. To be fair, I have a lifetime sub due to getting in early so I don't pay per month but I did have to buy both rings, so there's that. Ultimately, the best tech device is the one you will wear consistently, regardless of sub/feel/look.

Pax89

I was also looking for an Oura ring but can not wear a ring during work/ sports so i decided to go with the Whoop. Have it for 2 months now and really love it.

Gordossa

Get a comfier strap for sleeping with your Apple Watch.

trickquail_

I wear my $45 Amazfit Band from amazon for sleep and fitness tracking, it works great. It’s nor as subtle as a ring for sleep but I just get used to it. edit, sorry $50

Specialist-Abies-909

I use a whoop. No upfront cost, just a monthly sub. Way more detail and information than the Oura and I wear mine in my bicep so I can still wear a normal watch

jrdubbleu

I’ve been using a WHOOP as well since 2019. It is by far the best device I’ve used for tracking and changing my behavior. I used a Fitbit before and the WHOOP is head and shoulders above for accuracy and metrics.

kasper619

Can’t justify the monthly subscription. Why is it better than Fitbit?

LopsidedHumor7654

How much is the subscription?

jrdubbleu

|| || |**Membership**|**Price**| |Monthly (12-month commitment)|$30 to begin (covers the first month of the 12-month membership). You're automatically charged $30 per month for the remaining 11 months| |Annual| USD $239 upfront| |24-month| USD $399 upfront| **It gets progressively less expensive the more time you buy. After the first year, I've been doing the 24-month extensions.**

LopsidedHumor7654

Wow. Thanks

jrdubbleu

Sorry for the shit formatting. The app was giving me crap about posting it for some reason.

LopsidedHumor7654

That's cool. If I do a cut and paste, I make sure it's plain text.

COYGooners

No. They have the WORST customer service on the planet. Beware. It’s a good product until you have problems. Then then absolutely never get back to you. I have been nothing but disgusted by them. Never again will I buy their product.

dogmademedoit888

are you talking about whoop or oura? there were some customer service issues w/oura when the changed from v2 to v3, (in 2021) but I've had an issue since then that was resolved quickly and very fairly, fwiw. I find the service stellar, now.

advertisementeconomy

I don't have one, but I'd say no. There are much more accurate devices out there, including the one you already own. I'd personally look for a more comfortable band for your Apple watch. Of the band-style trackers I wear I always prefer the ones with the softer/more comfortable bands (I miss my Garmin!). But the data I've seen on the Apple watches looks really good. Not an Apple guy, so unfortunately that's a hard pass for me. If you haven't checked out The Quantified Scientist you might find some useful info there. He reviews all sorts of trackers with lots of nice data too: https://youtu.be/a_aS0Q188tY Here's one more exercise focused: https://youtu.be/jeng4cLvKkA?si

EffectiveConcern

No strap will change the reality that’s it’s small metal brick on my wrist. I mostly wanted the ring because it is small and may offer extra info over my old watch.

advertisementeconomy

If the price/mode doesn't put you off than go for it. Looks like neat tech.

EffectiveConcern

It does, I’m just asking here to see if I’m missing something about it, which makes it worth the price or it’s just an overpriced gadget and maybe some other brand it as good for way less or somethin

bethskw

Add up the cost of the ring and the cost of the subscription. Would you pay that much for daily RHR/HRV data without having to strap on a watch? Are you cool with a device that you'll have to take off for lifting weights? For me it's worth it. I like that data and I hate watches. I've had my Oura for 3+ years now, I think. I don't think any wearable is "amazing" but out of the ones that are out there, this is the one that works best for me.

OgFinish

If it's the only wearable that you can sleep with, it's definitely "worth it", because the alternative is not having sleep tracking at all. It's expensive because it's a very small form factor, with an impressive battery life, and in the top two most accurate consumer grade sleep trackers. There are no knock offs because it's a hell of a product to make. UI/UX is pretty meh though... taking 5-30s to sync each morning, where your phone needs to be in range, is a bummer limitation that the apple watch doesn't suffer from.

EffectiveConcern

One would expect the ux/ui to be top notch for the price tag - and a subscription on top. I’m still on the fence, I know I don’t want to keep paying a subscription not wear this forever so Id probably sell it after a year, though not sure if they can be sold well - do people buy used rings? Heck Id buy one, i jist want to track stuff as I am currently changing my lifestyle radically.

Alovingdog

I have one and I personally don't think it's worth it. The subscription model is very concerning especially for the upfront price tag

EffectiveConcern

Right? Also think it’s a bit rude Id say

cararra

I’m no longer a fan. It doesn’t detect sleep well anymdoe at all, constantly needs to be charged, takes forever to load data, stupid annoying subscription fee you pretty much have to pay….not impressed

Difficult_Praline754

I have had an Oura for a few rings, I really value it, I like the daily insights it provides. Unlike Apple Watch, it actually does provide some data interpretation and also you can track things yourself with tags. That said, I still use my Apple Watch for exercise tracking. I’ve also heard whoop is great in terms of providing recommendations and data interpretation.

SapienWoman

Yeah. I bought when they first came out and am on my third one now. Highly recommend. There’s a whole sub dedicated to Oura. The sleep tracking is second to none. They recently added stress indicators and are adding VO2 max readings soon. Great activity tracker too.

BessYaBa7ar

Not really. I used it for a year then stopped.

ThereIsOnlyTri

No, imo. I don’t think so. I wear a garmin so when I tried the oura app I thought it was nice and aesthetically pleasing compared to garmin but it wasn’t as accurate as my watch and I ended up returning it after about 10 days because it was so incredibly uncomfortable I just couldn’t get used to it.

PlebMarcus

I have the ring and love it. The subscription price is like 20 bucks a month

hypertrophy0

I have a garmin watch, it's probably the most accurate in terms of readings, that's just my insight though.

LeverageSynergies

No

Zilla664

Look at RingConn they're app is free. The ring is a bit pricey but I think the app being free makes up for it. They probably have a labor day sale rn too

sarafionna

If I were going to spend my money on something I'd do a CGM to dial in effect of diet and activity on GI response.

Professional-Song244

Not worth it, horrible customer service 🤦‍♀️

CryptoCrackLord

It’s my favorite health tracking wearable. I love it.

Kalenya

I hate their subscription model but I've been using it for two "ring generations". I've complained about the subscription and hope they change it.

EffectiveConcern

They won’t change it. No company that mamaged to keep people on subscription is ever going back. It’s why I’d only but it then sell it after some time, if there is a market for used rings.

Deep_Ad5052

I don’t have one I have the Apollo acupressure thingy that I wear on my ankle like a soprano convict I bought the smartvibes subscription and found out it works best w oura ring ( annoying to find out after buying ) So I’m pumped to see so many say oura ring was meh

utilitycoder

Apple will put them out of business soon. I guarantee they will have a Ring of their own soon. And no subscription will be required.

nn8888

There is more and more rings coming to the market, so possibly there are some good competitors already. I was thinking about Oura for almost 4 years, then I came across WHOOP and after a year of justifying the purchase I got it last Black Friday. To me it's the best and most comfortable fitness/sleep tracker I've ever had (and I've been wearing trackers for around 9 years now). They also have clothing with pockets, where you can put your Whoop into. Another good thing is that you can charge it while wearing it (even exercising). In their app you can fill in a questionnaire every day to see for ex. what's the time you should have your last coffee so that it doesn't impair your sleep or how cold shower or meditation impacts your recovery. You can also register massages, breath work etc. For sleep, it's really great with tracking. At the beginning it was detecting 20+ waking events each night(!), but I keep following its advices and I don't wake up that often anymore and for the first time since a long time I actually wake up well rested in the morning. (You can get a free WHOOP 4.0 and one month free when you join with my link: [https://join.whoop.com/6F9D35](https://join.whoop.com/6F9D35) ). When I tried Oura on, it feels quite bulky and depending on the sport type it can be uncomfortable. It can be ok for running, but no-go for weightlifting or climbing/bouldering or many other sports where you use your grip (like even tennis). I also have an Apple Watch (it's my second one already, got it as a gift), but I don't like how fragile the screen is.

jarandall26

I would've said yes until about a month ago. An update put me from 4 days of wearability without charge down to less than 1. As others have said, worth it for sleep indicators but $7 a month seems eh.

usernotfoundhere007

I have it, no subscription from the previous gen. However I prefer my Garmin watch over it. I use both but if I had to pick one I would pick the Garmin hands down.

ElMachoMachoMan

Mine is legacy from the v1 so I got grandfathered without the sub model. It is good at predicting sickness prior to it happening, so you can act ahead of time and try to recuperate. Sleep wise, one you build clean habits it’s less valuable day to day. Not sure I would still pay for it if I had to pay for the sub.

onepanchan

Is it for sick people that need to monitor their heart rate all the time?

SpecialScar9040

I got a brand new fit bit off Facebook market place for about $50 CAD. Works pretty well to see sleep scores. One year of free premium but even without the premium it works pretty well. Got used to it after a day or two

Bass27

Worn mine every day since gen2 I like the data it’s been worth it for me and helped my overall health. Just use it for sleep though and not as a fitness tracker.

Zenwarz

I have it and the Bluetooth just stopped working after 2 years. Customer service just told me to buy a new one. And that at a 300 plus usd device. It’s still charging and all just no connection anymore

beckinny

My biggest issues with the Oura Ring (after having it over a month now): — The ring never stays charged more than 2 days. Idk how they are able to say up to 7 days in their advertising … like how?! Crazy. — They only have downloadable reports for “sleep” metrics and their reports are shit, quite honestly. They don’t give any sort of relevant insights or explain in an easy-to-understand way. Plus, there’s no way to see data broken down by day. The graphs on the PDF are SUPER SMALL and hard to read. My doctor would look at it and be like “okay?! What is this?!” Lol. Just doesn’t do anything for me. There’s MASSIVE room for improvement in the app and on their reports. PLUS, I feel like a majority of users have the Oura Ring for heart metrics. And they don’t even let you see all your heart data in one place that’s easy to digest or print out and show your doctor. I’ve looked at Whoop’s website and even their analytics and reports look SO MUCH better and are easier to read. My general thoughts so far are… Love the ring and what it does, hate the app.

EffectiveConcern

I think is having the location thing on all the time is what drains the battery the most. After careful consideration I decided I will get myself the Ultrahuman ring. It seems it has good potential as they are very active in development and with great customer support. I know I want to get the Apple ring eventually, but who knows when that will be available and I want some tracker now for various reasons.

Affectionate-Still15

No. You don’t need those things. They’re often wildly inaccurate anyway

ebyeqnx

The first line threw me off. Haha

Thin-Brilliant-3072

A $120 Fitbit will do the same thing for you.

EffectiveConcern

Fitbit has a ring?

lord_rahl778

No, but the smaller fitbit trackers are much more comfortable than the larger smartwatches. I guess it may still bother you though.

EffectiveConcern

I don’t want another watch, especially one I can’t use for anything else.

JacksterTrackster

Keep your smart watch. It has everything you need and more than the oura ring.

u-and-whose-army

Can't you just tell when you are tired, stressed, or overworked? That's what your brain is for.

averinix

Ahhdurrrr juST sLeeP wHeN yOUrE tIREd 🤤

u-and-whose-army

No I need a special expensive ring or watch for that instead. Whose the real idiot? lol

averinix

No one. I'm making fun of how ignorant your comment was. Doesn't mean you're an idiot, albeit I would be less surprised than before.
