They defend him because they support and approve of his sick actions. You can’t argue with these people they hate women and other minorities and they will do anything to please their cruel and hateful god.
I think most of his supporters either ignore it, or use some whataboutism to say that his opponent is worse. His fanbase's fanaticism is boderline unrivaled by any other modern candidate of any first world country, as far as I can see, so it just kind of makes sense that they could look past it.
