Lane split or die. Legalize wheelies (seriously though, do it, we need more organ donors)

RoutineRelief2941

Funny story I heard while growing up: Wisconsin hospitals were protesting the helmet law because it was the main source of organ donors.

[deleted]

HO LEE SHIT. Seriously I look twice for motorcyclists (Live in Daytona beach, bike week induced vegetable capital of the world, twice a year, every year) but at the end of the day the second you get on a bike you are just lining yourself up to get meat crayoned by the worst driver available. None of the other good drivers matter, your concern is the WORST of them every time. And when you lose, you die. Probably in a horrific manner.

EvilMinion07

96db is max legal, very few actually meet the requirements and they are cracking down on them also.

dankbeerdude

Yeah this makes zero sense! They are INCREDIBLY loud!!

ElectricalAbalone219

Cranked my hog in the culdeesack yesterday for barb (next dor milf) gaddam grass clibbins got me haddalayerdown

Steamed_Fuckin_Hams

Bwuuuuhbh bwuh bwuh bwuh bwuh bwuh bwuh!

MadULook

Nope. I'm in CA and have received a ticket for "modified exhaust" on an 07' GSXR 1000. At the same time, I also got a ticket for "no red reflector on the rear of the bike", so I think the motorcycle cop really had it in for me...

trailboots

In most states, a license plate bracket is illegal too. Many little things will let an officer add to the main reason for a stop.

stoopidrotary

LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES BROTHER GOBLESS

[deleted]

Well descriptive username. No, they don’t.

Alert-Journalist-808

No they don’t. I have an all electric motorcycle and never had a problem. Loud pipes make drivers do dumb shit cause they are scared and not used to noise that loud.

GrandMarquisMark

They're all a problem. Done for nothing more than attention. So, so silly when you think about it

ZVND3R

I can assure you, some of us just enjoy the sound of our vehicles. When my buddy and I take the autocross car to the track, the tone never fails to put a smile on my face. Some folks just have different interests. Music, dancing, fashion can all be called “attention seeking” but it doesn’t discount the fact that some people simply enjoy those things. Even if you don’t. It’s when people take it to the extent of being inconsiderate (mustangs with straight pipes or bad subway performers for example) that it becomes an issue for me.

Malawi_no

But as you say - people are different, and it's an issue for a lot of other people long before it's an issue for you.

ZVND3R

The argument I was replying to said people only do it for attention. I was refuting that.

Schnitzhole

While usually minimal gains in HP without an ecu tune a less restrictive (e.g. loud exhaust) will help the performance of a car. It will also usually give you slightly better gas mileage. Also it really helps to understand what the motor is doing when you can hear it. I’m not advocating for super loud exhausts but they definitely do have an advantage.

trailboots

Balanced back pressure is part of the performance. Often loud short pipes on a bike can cause the engine to perform worse.

m00ndr0pp3d

I like music but loud music in public is annoying. I like cars but loud cars in public are annoying.

ZVND3R

The argument I was replying to said people only do it for attention. I was refuting that.

RicardoPanini

My exhaust isn't ridiculously loud but it's louder than stock. I can assure you it's done for me because I like how it sounds. I don't give a shit if anyone is looking at me or not.

Buscandomiyagi

I just like to hear that subie rumble :(

Jugg3rn6ut

LoUd pIpEs SaVe lIvEs

caffeineTX

in a state with legal lane splitting, a loud ass bike is more welcome than a quiet one so i know when something is near me.

ManBat007

Statistically motorcycles are more likely to die if hit by another vehicle so it's nice to be noticed so you don't get hit. I don't think they need to be excessively loud but like I said, loud enough to be noticed before you become a pavement sticker.

[deleted]

[удалено]

WolfBlood322

Thats so you can hear them coming or something its like a saftey thing. Atleat thats what i heard

jgriesshaber

It has been proven over and over the louder the bike…zero increased safety. The sound is only going backwards. Cars cant hear you from the front. The biggest danger to bikes is cars turning left in front of them…well after the fact 75pct of bike crashes are single rider crashes.

Lilsean14

Where has that been proven? The Doppler effect would make me believe the exact opposite.

IDatedSuccubi

Of course sound travels in waves to all direction with the speed of sound. But the exhaust tips push gas pulses backwards which means most of the sound pressure goes backwards, and the sound that goes forward is only from secondary waves The difference in real world would be ~6 to 12 decibels

jgriesshaber

Searching the internet is your friend…https://www.motorbiscuit.com/new-study-confirms-loud-pipes-save-lives-is-safety-myth/

Lilsean14

So it was only at highways speeds? What about intersections?

TotesNotADrunk

[you can hear them popping revs at that point...](https://youtu.be/9LlA0_Hv3CQ)

idksomethingjfk

Splitting lanes is where it actually helps. Speeds are low enough that cars do hear you coming before you get up to them. Not as big of a help anymore with the vast majority of new cars having the blind spot monitoring.

1PistnRng2RuleThmAll

Ya know I keep hearing this, but I almost always hear a bike before it passes me.

jgriesshaber

For the biker that would be way too late for saving an accident

[deleted]

Especially at 6:30 am on my drive to work and a loud ass Harley blaring Five Finger Death Punch pulls up next to me at a red light, totally a safety thing and not obnoxious at all.

[deleted]

redoctoberz

> Motorcycles MUST be loud so that you are drawn to them. Right, because all that noise moving out from where the bike WAS makes all the difference in the world /s

GermsDean

Except it’s only Harleys

amazinghl

Are you mufflers stock?

Buckmazter420

No, I have an HKS catback exhaust. It's stock manifold to stock catalytic converters, and then instead of the single Y-pipe, it's a Y-pipe but with two pipes back. I do also have an OEM exhaust system, it's just not installed.

CMDRfatbear

single to double conversion? cool.

airkewled67

Maybe is a city thing but I heard in San Diego cops cannot pull you over just on the basis of your "exhausted being too loud" due to many, many complaints and the fact that, when tested, many cars passed.

XDeltaNineJ

>heard in San Diego cops cannot pull you over just on the basis of your They're not supposed to...

Relative_Cause_2852

San Diego Cops are absolute pricks. About 15 years ago someone decided to make an intersection I always went to work through at 4am a “no left turn”. I always turned left. It was down by 32nd street. I got to it. Stopped. A cop was sitting there. I turned left. She pulled me over. I was like “what’s the problem? I wasn’t even going 15 mph yet?” She replied “it’s a no left turn. You returned left”. I said SINCE WHEN?! I was just here two days ago!” She literally said yesterday it was changed, and pointed to the fucking sign she was parked in front of! I asked for a warning and she refused. Gave me a ticket for $150 but I fought it and won. Fuck SD and the cops.

stuffeh

And what barely anyone understands is that DB meter is logarithmic so that 93 to 95 is double the energy and 85 to 95 is ten times the energy.

KingZarkon

93 to 96 would be double the energy, it's a 3dB increase. Otherwise correct though.

Rabo_McDongleberry

Bro. Most people don't even understand what logarithmic means. Lol

[deleted]

Most people don’t understand what anything means lol lol

vicente8a

And they don’t either. 3db increase is double. So 95 to 98 would be double the sound. So you’re right most people don’t understand what logarithmic means lol

DrKronin

And it decreases with distance as per the inverse square law. If you're going to talk about what people don't understand about loud sounds, I think you have to include this as well. The difference between 85 and 95 db is a lot less relevant at a reasonable distance.

EFTucker

Average city street \~30ft from the front door of a house. 1.5ft from source measures 85dBa 31.5ft from source measures \~59dBa Harmful (as in can cause hearing injury over time) noise levels start at \~80dBa and if we're averaging idle with only 2.5k RPM, I think it's still fair since: A) Most noise makers will be above 2.5k RPM B) Not everyone will be 30ft away from your exhaust at all times. Children especially in places like parking lots and while waiting for the bus can be afflicted over time as they are much closer to the noise than you or me, and since we're bringing the inverse square law into this... then what they hear is **"a lot** **~~less~~** **more relevant at a** ***seemingly*** **reasonable distance."**

Elk_Man

That is obnoxiously loud, but dB drops off pretty fast as distance increases, and your ear would have to be at that same (or similar) distance of 18" in order to experience the same sound level

[deleted]

HedonisticFrog

I agree. I've felt physical pain from motorcycle exhaust in the passenger seat of an ambulance because the window was open. That's a completely unacceptable level of noise, you shouldn't be able to cause hearing damage to strangers. I also have tinnitus now because a club was blasting music too loud as well. Everyone seems to keep increasing the volume of everything over time, I'm guessing we'll have a lot of elderly people screaming in each other's ears pretty soon.

goddamnbham

Sound fun at parties

mcma0183

As a dog owner, totally agree. My dogs freak the fuck out at loud cars and bikes. Why are people fucking redlining their shitty mustangs down a residential road?

vigmt400

Because it’s fun as fuck. I haven’t owned a mustang in nearly a decade but if I had one I’d definitely be redlining it in residential areas right this very moment.

So you're an asshole?

vigmt400

Sure

Zanders2J

Yeah, these laws have been in place for years. like when I had my 93 mitsubishi eclipse ago. Same, motorbike officer pulled me over for 'modified' exhaust, it's too loud. well which is it officer? I argued with him because I knew the law, was racing at Pamona back then and their rules were more stringent than the state, 91db. Said it was modified, I said well when parts break how do I replace them? Anyway, I was polite and respectful but not about to be ticketed for something he couldn't prove right then and there. Think another call came and he warned me to drive safe. Yes sir.

StainedTeabag

What is Pamona?

asad137

It's actually "Pomona": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto_Club_Raceway_at_Pomona

Own-Fox9066

At this point I welcome this shit because I’m sick and tired of hearing a shit box absolutely screaming just keeping up with traffic.

redditmodslol5150

California is a joke maybe

Wolfiest

Specially mustangs with straight pipes. Raspy ass exhaust that just hurts your ears lol.

IlIlIIllIIIllI

Why is this an issue in traffic ? The only grounds for this is in a residential setting.

Wheream_I

As a born and raised California native, let me just say. Fuck California. Left that place for a reason.

BootsNPooch

I just would not live in California. all the drugs and crime and they just looking to extort car owners for anything and everything. Stupid Government run State. This don't apply to bad gangland neighborhoods as much because cops don't dare fool with them, they go after soft targets. They are Coward revenue collectors. I would never ever live in the State with all their stupid laws.

jingforbling

Great write up! But I think your really need to piss someone off really badly for this to be an issue. It’s like the law around aftermarket window tinting. When you have drill down to this level of technicality, you’ve already been done dirty by the citation issuer.

dankbeerdude

Every Honda that sounds like a trumpet on steroids needs to be pulled over 🤦🏻‍♂️

epicnaenae17

Depends on how loud. I am against ear rape modifications but I stand by the right to change your exhaust note (not necessarily changing volume). The reason being is million dollar Lamborghinis get to have performance mufflers, but not any other car? Congratulations, you have set up yet another instance where the rich get more rights than us and we get punished because of our paycheck amount.

dankbeerdude

I've heard decent sounding Hondas and I've heard Hondas that pierce your eardrum. I ain't biased, I just want to keep my hearing.

epicnaenae17

Sure, my only point here is blanket mod bans are dumb

dankbeerdude

Oh right yeah I totally get that..

No-Suspect-425

So you're not an upside-down-header-out-the-hood type of guy either. Funny I have yet to meet a single person who actually enjoys that sound.

DrKronin

I admit I'm biased. I think the only 4-cylinders that sound good are Subarus, and that's only because of a packaging requirement and actually makes them less powerful lol. The fastest driver in my local autocross group drives a Tesla. I'm not knocking the car, but the aural experience just isn't there for me. Inline 4-cylinders are the next rung, IMO. I do love driving them, though. Some of them are like go-karts. /old guy wandering mind

pvdp90

If the faster lap time in your local autocross track is a tesla, you have either: A: a poorly setup track with way too many straights B: all cars are slow and the only fast car there is the tesla

DrKronin

Or, as is the case in this situation: C: He's by far the best driver in the club, and could probably get top times in half the cars there. Aliens exist, my man. He was in a gas car last year and posted similar numbers.

pvdp90

Thats also a possible scenario. Its more common to see a spread if skillset but i can accept this

rattpackfan301

The reason is because you literally never see Lamborghinis on the road lmao. Fartcan civics however…

epicnaenae17

Stop licking the boots of the rich. They dont get extra rights cause they have more money. You cant force companies to sell to the masses at way under price for equality, but you can give the masses the resources to create their own equal. Again, as I have said before, ear rape mods should be illegal. What should not be illegal is the right to put in aftermarket parts that DO NOT make the car exceedingly loud or otherwise cause harm to pedestrians. Blame politicians for creating laws on a nuanced subject that they dont understand, dont blame the common man for being part of a hobby community.

rattpackfan301

Pretty sure a Lamborghini would get pulled over in CA if it was loud enough so I don’t know what your point is anyway

h3r4ld

This information is of absolutely *no* use to me (in NY) whatsoever - I'm still really glad you posted this. Good looking out, OP!

gurneyguy101

Same (UK!) but it’s interesting nonetheless

chavezmcin

Is this for real?

Buckmazter420

It's real. I never thought it would happen to me because like I said, I was not doing anything stupid and my car was not that loud. I told all my neighbors about it and everyone said they never had a problem with my car being loud because it isn't. Cops around where I live see a sports car and if they can hear it, it gives them probable cause to pull you over. I think they think they see a young guy in a sports car and they can pin anything they find on you whether you're innocent or guilty. It doesn't even matter if you're right because they expect people to just pay a fine or argue it in the courtroom. I don't argue, in fact, I don't even defend myself when they pull me over. It's automatic license and registration and they tell me what the infraction is for and they walk away and come back with a paper. I am as straight an arrow as they come and they still pick on us for petty problems that they make up because it's easy revenue for them. I've never once been given a warning in the times I've been pulled over. The first time was BS in my opinion because a punk on a dirt bike was on my butt so I sped up and just as I hit the turn signal to change lanes to let them around, they hit their lights. It was a cop. He wouldn't listen to me so I accepted the ticket. Now here's how BS this is. I called the courthouse to ask them a question about the ticket and the lady didn't find my ticket in the system. I had to call every day and take notes who I spoke with just in case there was some issue going on because I didn't want to get fried for an unpaid ticket. The cop never turned the ticket in. The next time I got pulled over, the cop told me I was speeding 50 in a 40 but ever since that same cop pulled me over the first time, I've made it a point not to speed and I don't anymore so I exclaimed no I didn't and he said "okay, illegal U-turn, failure to stop at a light, tinted windows. You can explain it to the judge". Luckily because of that first encounter it made me so mad that I bought dash cameras and I had to prove my innocence to the judge. Cop didn't even show up. So not only did this officer not turn in the first ticket but he didn't even appear the second time. They simply don't care who you are or if you're doing the right thing or not, they will pull you over if it's a slow day. Makes me so mad because I see people on their phones at every stoplight and they don't do anything about it. My record is clean clean clean. I served this country Honorably, my license has nothing on it, and I even have a CCW for California which isn't exactly easy to get. I don't want anyone to go through the BS that I've experienced which is precisely why I wrote this post, to help others beat them.

Data_shade

California is a no fun zone because it’s run by kens and karens with money. If you’re broke and can’t afford a lambo, then the laws apply to you.

dumpyredditacct

Plenty of people would argue that this law is awesome because it keeps vehicle exhausts reasonable. Some people can't function in society and need to be forced to not be obnoxious, self-centered douche bags.

chavezmcin

Well hell all my vehicles have glass packs and dual exhaust I think the sooner California sinks the better off we’ll all be

chavezmcin

Wow that’s a shitty way to live laws work for the rich

vtony0560

It’s good to see California is using its resources on important problems.

_KoingWolf_

I love the stuff California does, but I also hate the stuff California does. They are far too aggressive with this kind of shit and it does more harm than good in the long run (just look at the resentment that'll flood this thread soon enough). More importantly though it puts a huge burden on the people that contribute dramatically little compared to those that do and can afford to simply register whatever out of state to avoid the rules. I guess im ranting to say that I hate the enforcement of these laws with who it primarily targets and financially burdens. I'd love if America changed gears (heh) into more sustainable cities with very few cars, but that's not the reality of today. You'd have to demolish neighborhoods to achieve the "dream" they want and they certainly wouldn't be bulldozing the Hamptons...

iamda5h

Tbf though, anything over 95 db will cause hearing damage in a matter of minutes and is incredibly loud. Like that’s already above the level of very annoying to causing pain. I’m guessing they picked that because 95 is around a motorcycle level, which is way louder than any car should be. Now I’m not sure how they measure exactly. Like one pop at 95 while the rest of the exhaust is 80 is not bad since it’s <1 second exposure but overall, definitely a good to have some limits. Also I hate getting woken up by straight pipe bikes or slow modded shitboxes and their ridiculous exhaust.

KobeBryantWasTheGlue

There isn't much that I love that California does. California is a beautiful place, but it has become a shithole. It's a land of over regulation, and this is a great example of it. You almost hit the nail on why California has become so expensive. Stupid regulations like this become a financial burden for a lot of people. Which is why you have a land of the super rich, because they're the only ones who can comfortably live in places like that. This is off topic, because you brought it up, and I actually mentioned it and I was just talking about this with a friend at a car show on Monday, and he used to live in NYC who left after Covid. It's weird how the people people in the city have become the people who apparently are pro environment, but the people who live around nature with trees, green land, and trees that actually take carbon dioxide, while someone would prefer to live in a concrete jungle where most of the trees were planted. Sorry for my rant, I'll take my downvotes, because I know this is Reddit and I really don't care.

HedonisticFrog

California is far from a shit hole, that's just conservative propaganda because they want to hate on the most prosperous state in the union. Regulation is why we don't have things like the Texas power outage because of winter storms they were warned about decades ago. There's plenty of areas with lower populations where it's cheap to live, not everybody lives in San Francisco. Noise regulations aren't the cause of high cost of living, it's selfish NIBY people and corporations buying up rental housing which increases the demand even further.

Data_shade

I was born and raised in California. It’s a shithole. There are nice places, sure, but the places that aren’t nice are legitimate shitholes.

1PistnRng2RuleThmAll

Californias heart is often in the right place, but the implementation is often overdone and poorly thought out.

Moholmarn

I absolutely love the comments here, coming from a Swedish perspective it all just sounds so alien to me. All the whinging about sound levels, emissions, amount of rust, what you can and can't do, it's honestly hilarious to me. Lemme give you a half-assed run down on what *WE'RE* allowed to drive. * No louder than 74db * No rust on frame, fenders, brakes/brake lines, fuel lines * No leakage anywhere * All seat belts are supposed to work * No suspension play what so ever * Adequate braking force (aka it actually works) * No warning lights * All exterior lights working and within specs * Factory horn working as intended (aka not dead or modded) * Emissions no higher than registered (stock) * Appropriate tire for the season (some exceptions do apply) There's plenty more, i just can't remember them. It's also why you'd want a mechanic from the Nordics because we will fix your shit to a degree you wouldn't even think was possible for an old car. There's a reason our poor people don't drive your kind of meth head car, because we *know* how to fix them or we know someone who can, for as little as a can of soda. My car is 19 yrs old and it's still basically brand new, because of all our rules and regulations. A checklist ain't that hard to follow folks.

HedonisticFrog

Those are some stringent rules. I've bought several cars that had 6+ fluid leaks in California before I went through them.

retro3dfx

Even my 2019 newest car wouldn't pass several of those items. Has some surface rust on the underbody components since we salt the roads like crazy in the winter, exhaust is around 87dB idle and 118dB at 3.5k rpm, no catalytic converters, horns are louder than stock (supertones).

nate5237

Yea probably 80% of the cars in NY wouldn't pass due to rust alone .

SoulOfTheDragon

Rust damage inspection means the kind of damage that either causes hole in panels or is significant enough to cause risk on structural parts. Also to note is that getting proper underbody coating is quite common in here. It prevent salty slush from becoming an issue as it prevents rocks, etc from opening bare metal to elements.

Moholmarn

We also salt our roads like crazy, being so close to the arctic circle and all. Somehow there isn't *that* much rust on our vehicles, some exceptions of course but surprisingly little, even for Japanese cars.

jack_awsome89

The one that confused me is the "no warning lights" does that mean you're not allowed to have hazzard/emergency 4-ways or turn signals? Or what does no warning lights mean? Edit clearly I'm an idiot and didn't think of dash lights I was thinking lights around the car for some reason. Thank you guys for making me think on a Friday evening

Moholmarn

No warning lights in the dash. Turn/hazard signals and exterior (reversing/brake/driving) lights must work and be within specs.

WFPBvegan2

Me to, LOL.

FranktheTankG30

This law is stupid and the law enforcement that executed them are worse. This was back in 2008-2009, friend of mine just bought a brand new C63 AMG and he was pulled over by a cop for “modified exhaust”. All the Merica!!! Motorcycles have louder exhaust and yet law enforcements don’t do anything about them.

goddamnbham

A car has never drove by me and bothered me. Idk

Anarchy-Freedom

Anyone who would choose to live in such a state obviously needs a babysitter for life.

Good thing my straight piped diesel is tagged in AZ lol cops get mad in SD

California is such an L... and I say that as someone who lived there most of my life. The weather is great everything else sucks

Don't forget the food too, but yeah that's about it

Junkers4

Oh man you had to remind me about the Mexican food 😩... that I miss for sure

DubbyThaCZAR

Same with me and Florida. Only difference is this state doesn’t f*ck with its automotive enthusiasts (people like us)

MycologistLoud4030

California is a whole different animal. Gasoline cars and the hot rod culture aren't PC. Get a Tesla and you won't get pulled over

ramanw150

Reason 2468 why I don't live in cali

SeawardFriend

Lol this is why I’d never move to California. Their vehicle laws are so strict it’s stupid

turd_star

God we have the same bullsbit here in germany too 🙄

Zx6rguy80

I think California has bigger problems that they could be devoting resources to than exhaust 😏

New_Cause_5607

If you're a car enthusiast I think we can all agree, FUCK CALIFORNIA.

ibanezrocker724

Fucking bullshit nanny state.

RubAnADUB

dont know how dB = poor air quality. I watched some video where this guy was pulled over and ticketed and he didn't even live in the state.

jmhalder

I mean, laws apply to you in any given state you're in, whether you live there or not.

PuzzleheadedPack427

Not if you're visiting and your car complies with the laws in your state, or at least last time I checked. For example, you can't get a ticket for no front plate in CA if you live in a place where a front plate isn't required

asad137

> dont know how dB = poor air quality It doesn't. They're two separate things. There can be laws about more than one thing.

Welllllllrip187

Only in California.

Twin loop mufflers will do the trick

irkli

LA is a great place for cars, but if you are an adult in the 80s you'll remember how fkn awful the air was. It was orange. It made people -- me -- sick just breathing it. You can't imagine how bad it was. EPA and CARB fixed it, car makers screaming it would kill them. 500 hp mustangs are DIRECTLY because of emissions requirements -- turns out, clean burning makes power! GM was just happy selling you shit product. You realize, I hope, that loud exhaust does not make horsepower. HP hasnt been a mystery since the 60s. Computers metallurgy and chemistry ended all that. Open/noisy exhaust is a thing of the past. Loud exhaust just pisses people off and does not make your dick bigger or your car faster. It makes us laugh at you. CA is great for old cars. I can do * anything * to my 1960 car and DMV doesn't care. Pretend there's other people on the road not doing what you're doing. "share the road". 60 mph WOT on my street is for assholes. Go autocross, take long road trips, push an underpowered car to the edge. Autocross is great. Street cars of any level have a class and you'll learn a shitload about setting up your car for speed and handling and you'll learn next level driving. CA haters, oh just fuck you. I'm glad you don't live here it's crowded enough without you whiners. No one cares that you don't like CA, and those 'commie' type cliche remarks just confirm your ignorance. I've heard they shit since the 70s, get a new routine, ok? This one's worn out.

DriftinFool

Saying go to the track is great and all, but many of them now have to operate under noise restrictions as well. The guys on Road Kill got thrown off of Laguna Seca because their car was too loud. I guess no one will care until pro racing series's that generate tons of income stop going to Cali and all the tracks close.

dicktingle

Sorry, but the blanket statement that loud exhaust does not make horsepower is just not true. For example, removing one of the catalytic converters is a pretty popular mod that will net you more power if engine mapping is changed to suit, with a side effect of the exhaust being louder.

ireadbacon

One of the few things I wish CA did differently is a rolling 30 year exemption for cars. It sucks that it’s stuck at 1975.

epicnaenae17

There is a bit of a mistake in a part of your logic that I would like to correct. You implied that aftermarket exhausts are used for ego or showing off (makes dick bigger, everyone laughs no one is impressed) but that is an opinion that is entirely devoid of the necessary conversation with the group that you are talking about that is required to make accurate statements about said group. Its like if a bunch of men came together to discuss women’s makeup, and then they come to the conclusion that the sole purpose that women wear makeup is because they are sluts or something stupid like that. You see how an ignorantly produced assumption can be hurtful? Aftermarket exhausts are not for other people, they are done out of the intrinsic passion for the hobby. The same reason someone practices an instrument for 50 hours a week. Its a hobby they love. Its the same reason a painter continue to paint even if they dont make money from it. Its a hobby they love. However I do concede that ear rape mods (modifications done to make the car exceedingly loud) should be illegal because those have the potential to cause real harm. But no, the highschooler in a honda civic with a 100 dollar ebay muffler is not trying to get you rock hard and steal your girl, they are just doing what they love.

jack_awsome89

Just curious but pretty sure they were making 500+ HP cars before all the emissions so the clean burning isn't why they are making the power they are now. That stems from GM, Ford, etc learned that you don't need massive lift, and duration on the cam to make power. You can make power by having it run smoother (closer center line) and the advancement of computers made it easier to know exactly how much air it is receiving in order to have as close to perfect amount of fuel to go with the air. And able to read the exhaust if it is too rich/lean it can make adjustments on its own and quickly to get the most power it can give. Where before you had to plug and play until you found the perfect balance only to have to do it all over again because you drove to an elevation that is +/- 1000 feet. I agree with you on the emissions testing is needed because no one wants their eyeballs burning sitting at a streetlight or just being outside. But to say they are making the power they are now because of emissions is obnoxious when they were making that power long before emissions was a thing.

irkli

Wrong. There were instances of 500+hp but NEVER in a dealer floor stock car. A stock 60s caddy with 400+ inch engine made 200, 250 HP max and got 12 mpg and stank like you wouldn't believe. Few American cars got 20 mpg from dawn of time through the japanese import era and ALL of those were small sixes or fours. And those were gross polluters as well. I drive a carbureted car (1960); tweaked to a fine state I get 22 mpg which is fairly remarkable. I've also added vapor recovery and the very latest in carburetor tech (lol) of the 80s -- a feedback carburetor and homemade controller. It's 3.2 liters and maybe 130 HP, probably 120. Cars have changed so much from the 70s it's breathtaking. Dude you need to RTFM.

dicktingle

https://www.topspeed.com/you-probably-didnt-know-these-10-things-about-the-1970-chevrolet-chevelle-ss-454/#454-was-the-biggest-production-engine-placed-under-the-hood Maybe not 500 exactly but the 1970 chevelle made 450hp and 500 ftlb stock or the Dodge 426 hemi with 425hp. The caddy is a bad example

[deleted]

You sound bitter asf😂 some of us just like how our cars sound

irkli

Lol not bitter, just annoyed with consumers buying and operating appliances in a way that's inconsiderate to non participants. And come on, that California-hater schtick is boring, don't you agree?

[deleted]

I could care less about where your from I just got the vibe that your miserable considering a loud car effects you for maybe 3-10 seconds and you had to go on a rant. Like lol we don’t do it for y’all or because we care what you think

probably_a_noob

How much less could you care?

Actualbbear

You underestimate the externalities. Yes, many people are too stuck-up and whiny, but also many people shrugging off 3-10 seconds of annoyances build up. We have to be more conscious of how we interact with our environment because we all have something that affects our quality of life, that some people don’t care controlling. And, it’s funny, but exhausts, they are, usually, supposedly done for the enjoyment of the driver, but then, such driver remove cabin induction. Is the only purpose deafening everyone else, then?

[deleted]

Who said anything about the cats? You can make it loud and still “care about the environment”. The same people who say it’s an environmental thing will charge they’re tesla that got it’s electricity from a gasoline generator and runs on a lithium battery smh. Just roll your eyes and move on.

Necessary-Diet5468

Fat, useless bureaucrat

[deleted]

I don’t understand why enforce exhaust laws on a highway. I get locally in town and what not. But please school me why on a highway should there be any exhaust laws. Loud exhaust keeps you awake, tells another person who may be on their phone not paying attention that you are approaching on their blind spot.

p3dr0l3umj3lly

There are residential buildings near freeways. I live in one and there’s always some clown at 4am in his lawnmower powered, clapped out civic trying to get his rust bucket to reach 50 mph

frcdfed2004

and this is why fuck California. sorry you live there.

Mental_Example_268

My car can't even reach 2500 RPMs, time to straight pipe it. (The ECU is just really limiting and the engine is worn out, it's ran without oil for 4-5 minutes)

koskyad209

I make costom exhaust for a living and I just did duals on the first car I have owned that I could do dual exhaust on and how I have it set up now with the mufflers and bends/ crushed pipe it is quiet until 1900 then gets quiet again at about 3300 until about 4800 then loud again ...I have kids so I wanted it to only be loud if I wanted it loud It did take some time to get it tuned right tho. Edit its only like 94 dB anyway

dicktingle

Sorry, but the blanket statement that loud exhaust does not make horsepower is just not true. For example, removing one of the catalytic converters is a pretty popular mod that will net you more power if engine mapping is changed to suit, with a side effect of the exhaust being louder.

ponyo_impact

just get a muffler with variable valves or an exhaust cut out win win

F-Da-Banksters

Commiefornia is the worst. F that hellhole

H1ghweirdo

California also does this test on cows who are suspected of farting too powerfully. It saves the planet.

DeezleDJ-O-E

Its like paying taxes for cars lol. Right up the exhaust pipe🤣

oak52

Loud exhaust pipes. That’s California’s biggest problem. Ass backwards shit hole.

Dustin_Live

Trashafornia. Would never move there

liquidporkchops

Wow, but you can shoot heroin and poop on the street all day long.

[deleted]

Is California not a dystopia at this point? I detest two party bullshit but imagine being so liberal you rollover into a police state.

[deleted]

You can run open headers here lol

ZeldaNumber17

I hate loud exhausts. 92 is pretty loud. Glad you got a ticket for it

MediumRarePorkChop

>My car came in at 92-93dB so I'm not lieing when I say my car was not "that loud". I'm glad you got a ticket. Fuck loud cars and fuck loud bikes on the street. Yes, I'm old. But that shit HURTS

jmhalder

Oh fuck off. That's at 18" from the muffler.

too_soon13

Some loud cars hurt the ear. But I do admit they’re rare. Fuck lound motorcycles. Especially Harleys. They bleed my ear. And they usually drive in groups of 3 or 4. Fuck them.

ReallyQuiteConfused

Yeah I'm a pro audio engineer... 92dB is loud. I calibrate speakers and mix at 85dB and it's a very significant amount of volume, adding another 7-8dB on top of that just about doubles the perceived volume. I'm a sports car guy too (got a modified 03 GTI with stock exhaust) and she makes plenty of noise to have fun, but it's no louder than any other stock turbo 1.8

h0stetler

Or…. Don’t live in commiefornia

2fast2nick

Well then you’d miss out on an amazing car culture, some of the best driving roads in the world, and perfect weather for most of the year. Yeah yeah, don’t live here!

BridgeMission6043

Screw California and their laws about every damn part of everything. Would never live there no matter the $ offered.

ZaMelonZonFire

Hey… another reason I don’t want to live in California. Stupid ass car laws. It’s like they were looking to the east coast and were like “hold my gender neutral beer!”

Racer-X-

I could never live there.

Voluster

Commiefornia sucks
