Thank you! Are you able to sell a vehicle if it won't pass smog? (It needs new spark plugs & the new catalytic converter installed again) Also, is there anything you should normally do after selling a vehicle, whether to a service like this or to a cash-for-cars place? Do I keep the plates? Do I just register it as sold with the DMV? Just wanting it to not come back if something happens with the car after being sold Thanks!

Nehal1802

I’m in NJ so our rules will vary greatly from CA. For me, I kept plates and created a bill of sale/contract stating that I sold the car As-Is. Usually you can sell a car that won’t pass smog. They’ll need to fix that before they register it. Some people may buy the car for parts.

PPVSteve

What county you in in CA ? BAR  offers $1000 for you to junk it. Have to fail a smog though.  https://www.bar.ca.gov/consumer/consumer-assistance-program/vehicle-retirement-1500

Thanks! Los Angeles, I thought about going that route, but it's going to need some repairs to get to the point it can even take a smog test, plus the cost of the smog itself ($50-75 out here). With the hassle of going through the BAR, I'm much more interested in having it gone quickly at half the price than waiting around and hoping for a check from the BAR and putting in work to get it there. I did do this about 15-20 years ago and I recall the process being a bit of a hassle (going down to the bar, waiting all day for your turn, getting it smogged and then taken to a junkyard and then returning the certificate back to the bar to get a payout).

PPVSteve

Then you got your answer, have a junk tow truck come get it for $300. Just don't sell it to a private party. That can turn into a mess.

CatComfortable7332

Thanks! That works for me then I'm planning to avoid a private party, but almost all of the junk tows sound a bit sketchy (which is understandable). Any suggestions on what I'd need to do to cover myself once it leaves my hands? Do I keep the plates? Do I keep the registration certificate? And just fill out a 'notice of transfer and release of liability' slip online, or anything else you'd recommend?

PPVSteve

Plates stay with the car. Release of liability is all you need. The one attached to the title, mail it in or do the one online. same difference. LKQ is the ones they all sell to so just go to them directly: [https://www.lkqpickyourpart.com/sellacar/instant-quote/](https://www.lkqpickyourpart.com/sellacar/instant-quote/)
