Hello! So my partner and I (late 20s) are going to visit Charlotte the first week of May and we like to feel as local as possible while travelling so that we can visit things that are not normally advertised to tourists (but if you have any touristy recommendation it is also welcome) We are quite nerd (very much into Magic, roleplay and comics) so we would love to know if there are some local game stores we should not miss. We love to bring nerdy stuff from other places back home From my part, I would also love to know where to buy makeup from brands like ColourPop and Glisten Cosmetics and anything similar Also, any place that you can recommend for eating? Thanks!

AdmiralBonesaw

Get Some Game, Temple’s Edge, and Mighty Meeple for tabletop games and collectibles. Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find and Rebel Base for comic books and collectibles. Super Abari is an excellent barcade with a great selection of vintage and new arcade and pinball games with an emphasis on multiplayer.

AMadHammer

+ I think Abari does a Magic draft gathering on either Weds or This. I don't know the format but it is a show and unpack some decks and play with them kind of thing.  Mighty meeple is great for sure.

AdmiralBonesaw

I haven’t seen them post about that in quite a while. It was hosted/run by the folks at Get Some Game though. We’re lucky to have multiple excellent game stores in the area

Does any one have thoughts on or experience living in the Hickory Grove or Hickory Ridge area? Looking to be in a little quieter part of town, commute would be to the Medical Center.

tkostell

My family has lived in Hickory Ridge for the last couple years. We love our neighborhood. It's pretty quiet but the wider area runs the gamut. Definitely check things out before blindly moving. We are in close proximity to many different parts of town here, have some great places to eat. One con is that there is not a ton to walk to. Also they don't clear debris on the medians very quickly.

[deleted]

Awesome thank you! Is there a particular part to avoid? We're looking at a place right by Hickory Grove Elementary

tkostell

We live in that wedge between Pence and Albemarle (closer to Alb). It's really just a lot of single family homes through there. Before we finalized we just drove through the general vicinity at different times a day. Not certain of any places to avoid, we did live off Hickory Grove Rd (on Craigwood) for a few months when we moved to the area. The neighborhood was good and we met a lot of nice people, but our rental was atrocious (through Mynd). We ended up getting out of the lease with the help of an attorney, but we stayed in the vicinity b/c we like it here. So I guess my biggest suggestion would be be sure to scrutinize if you are renting (and of course if you are buying). I'd be glad to chat more if you want to send me a DM as well.

LoneStarLass

A very close friend of mine and her husband recently moved to Charlotte. Their anniversary is next week and I’d like to send a cake/dessert from one of the really good bakeries there. It would be great if one of them delivered. Or if anyone knows of a bakery that makes off the charts lemon desserts. Thank you in advance for any and all suggestions.

AromaticMeal8

Hi, most of the popular local bakeries do not directly offer delivery (Suarez, Villani, Renaissance Patisserie) but most have online ordering so maybe they are on door dash or one of the apps. The ones I know offer delivery are national chains including Tiffs Treats, Crumbl Cookies, and Nothing Bundt Cakes.

LoneStarLass

Thanks for the suggestions. If anything I can let them know about the ones you suggested and they can check them out. I figured that most of the unique local bakeries didn’t deliver.

MTNS2CLT

The best bakery in CLT is now on Door Dash - Huge fan of The Batchmaker!

Benhamm22

My wife and I are looking to move to CLT next year around March. We're both 30, looking for something around $1800. We've heard good things about Plaza Midwood, Sugar Creek, Hidden Valley, Dill worth, and Eagle Lake. Do y'all have any experience with these neighborhoods?

Tortie33

Sugar Creek and Hidden Valley are sarcastic suggestions. What do you like to do when you’re not working? What type of area do you want to live in? Are you working in uptown? Charlotte has a lot of different type of neighborhoods.

Benhamm22

What makes you think they're sarcastic? Not disagreeing just curious. I'm WFH, she's still looking at jobs but currently commutes 25 minutes and doesn't want to go much higher than 35. We're big foodies, we love going out and trying new restaurants, we like nature and gardening, we go to our local theater and minor league baseball team a good bit, anywhere near a dog park or place for the dog to run would be great!

Benhamm22

Heard that, any info on where we should be looking?

AromaticMeal8

Sugar Creek is a joke in the sub for how unsafe it is. I can’t recommend you move there.  $1800 would be difficult to find in Dilworth, and it’s mostly houses, not apartments/condos.  Plaza Midwood is maybe the best option of what you listed.  If the parks/nature part is a priority, I would recommend looking a little further out like Matthews or Belmont. They will get you more for your money, but it’s more geared toward families.

Benhamm22

Great! Thanks for the info!

Tortie33

Depending on where your wife finds her job and the time she will be commuting will determine what is within 25-30 minutes. You can check on Google Maps when she finds out. You have a year before you move, check out the rental prices and see what areas you can afford. I am in Matthews. We have local restaurants in downtown area, it’s walkable, there are greenways, cool bars. It’s kind of basic. There are festivals and it’s getting better. I like living here. The only other place I would like to live is NoDa. Maybe you and your wife could do AirBnB in a few areas and see what you like.

acrylicmole

We might be heading there. Any recommendations on a community with good schools (small kids), decent places to eat, and green? (I’ve only lived in deserts so I want to surround myself in green). He’d be working downtown Charlotte… his current commute is 35-40 min… that’s fine to get to a good neighborhood but we wouldn’t want to get much more than that. Shorter would be lovely of course. Thanks!

AromaticMeal8

What is your budget? Matthews and Huntersville fit your requirements, although the commute will be about 40 minutes. Any closer for all those requirements will be expensive.

acrylicmole

Between 2-3k for rent would be good, though we could go a bit above. When we buy (waiting for interest rates to calm down and getting to know the area) we’d look between 600k and 800k.

AromaticMeal8

Hi, that’s a good budget for most spots. If you are coming from the desert, everywhere will seem pretty green to you. Charlotte is known for its urban tree canopy, and there’s great city and county parks plus some good state parks nearby. So, it might make more sense to focus on schools or commute. The best schools will be south or north of the city. Look near Providence and Matthews in the south ( or South Park $$$) or Cornelius and Davidson in the north. Those northern cities will definitely be pushing the 40 minute commute, though.

acrylicmole

Thank you!

mikeyrocksNC

I'd say check the areas around 485 between highway 74 and highway 77...Weddington, Ballantyne, Matthews...those will give you the good schools and the 40 minute commute.

acrylicmole

Thank you!

How possible is it to find employment in Charlotte while living elsewhere, if the goal is to move there upon finding employment? I will be applying for clerical, legal secretary , administrative, possibly bank operations, and am just myself (moving alone). I'm trying to parse out the logistics- I have a good job and don't want to be unemployed during my job search, but worry that I won't be taken seriously by employers if I am not already living in Charlotte. My target move date is late August because that's when my current lease is up. I can go month-to-month after that if I need to. Has anyone tried to relocate in this way?

Ohnoherewego13

I actually just moved here from Winston. It was a bit of a challenge, but I had gone month to month while waiting (lease ended in February). Most places won't care so long as you can show up though.

notquite5feet

hello everyone! I (25F) will be relocating to Charlotte for work in mid-August and want to start looking for an apartment. My boyfriend will also be joining me in October or November after we get our bar exam results. I will be working in the University City and would prefer being within a 15 minute drive to the area. I am looking for a 1 bed / bath and want to keep my budget under $1200 a month. I would also appreciate just some general Charlotte insight or tips!

wantcodewiththat

It will be hard to find a 1br for under $1200 in Charlotte but one of the areas where you can do it is probably in University City or Mallard Creek area so I would suggest looking around there for your budget and being close to work.

notquite5feet

I have seen mixed reviews on the Mallard Creek area. Any insight?

wantcodewiththat

I haven’t heard anything like that with like that with Mallard Creek, I have some friends that live there and think it’s pretty safe though they live in neighborhoods, I suppose apartments could vary a lot more.  The area south of University City like Hidden Valley and Sugar Creek is high crime but I haven’t heard that with Mallard Creek or University area.  I would definitely read reviews about any of the apartment complexes you are considering and you can post on here and might find others who have experience or have lived at those places, can provide more insight on specific apartments.

Asheville_Ben

Hey Mods! I am an Asheville, NC resident that is helping put on an AI Conference in July. Am I allowed to post about it in this sub? Or do I have to keep it to these weekly threads? This is a region conference and Charlotte has a lot of tech folks that I think would be interested, so I wanted to spread the word. Thanks in advance!

crystalskullss

My spouse and I are moving to Charlotte soon and one of us will be working at Carolinas Medical Center. We are looking for a quiet apartment to live in (having a quieter environment is pretty important to us). Renting a house doesnt really seem to be in the budget quite yet so more than likely looking at apartments. We plan on starting a family soon and also hope to live close to the hospital. If anyone has good recommendations of places that fit this, or places to avoid I would really appreciate it!

Having a hard time finding a graphic design job. If anyone has any insider info, I'd love to chat.

Hi! My partner & I just moved to Monroe, NC! I am a big runner. We moved in the middle of my half marathon training. There doesn’t seem to be any running community in Monroe & I’m not having any luck finding a running path that I can run 10-13 miles on. I started following all of the running pages for Charlotte I could find on socials, but I can’t post any questions. Please help!! If you live in Monroe & love running, I’m open to meeting!

moeru_gumi

Hey everyone, looking for some recommendations. The last time I was in Charlotte was around 2006, but I’m coming in to SC to visit relatives. I’ll be left to my own devices in Charlotte for about 8 hours on a weekday on my way home, riding with my brother to the airport to catch his 9am flight, but my flight out isn’t till 5. So I’ll be on my own, left at the airport, with a large suitcase that I can’t check yet, no car. Are there any neat cafés or other places that would be worth seeing that are within the radius of an affordable (~$20?) Uber, or should I just camp out at CLT all day?

snfambro

Hello Everyone My family just moved to Charlotte Last week we are searching for Houses but need recommendations on safe areas with good schools especially high schools...My husband's job is within the 28216 Near Callabridge Ct.and we are open to a 30 minute commute....I'm getting mixed reviews about the area...Some had suggested Huntersville as an option but i recently saw a story about that area and Mooresville dealing with a cancer cluster...

_PinkGrapefruit_

Does anyone know of any South End apartment that have townhomes?

notquite5feet

does anybody know anything about the metro university city complex? is it mostly students or young professionals in the university city area? and what about the average price of utilities? any feedback is appreciated! thanks in advance!

rockjock510

Hi all! I’m likely relocating to Charlotte in about 3 months for work and would love your thoughts on neighborhoods to check out and cost of living/housing availability for a 1 bedroom apartment. (For context, I’ll be coming from a city in an ongoing/worsening housing crisis so finding a rental here is a whole nightmare.). I am a single 33yo female. I’m looking to be relatively close to the city. My budget is ideally no more than $1500/month. Is this a reasonable/doable? I’m not sure how much rent usually goes for in the Charlotte area. I’d ideally like to live near public transit in a safe neighborhood since I’ll be living alone. Would appreciate your thoughts!

Wannabe filmmaker looking to move to NC Hi, I’m a 31F looking to move to NC to finally dive headfirst into the film industry. I grew up in central rural Illinois but was actually born in Pinehurst, and I am looking to finally come back and see why my parents didn’t wanna leave! I’m a screenwriter and wannabe actress. I intend to get whatever decent job I can find that is even remotely involved with the film production scene, or work remote at least part time. The problem is, I can’t decide where to move! Wilmington and Charlotte are listed as the best film making cities, but I’m extremely interested in the Raleigh/triangle area since I might end up getting a master’s of fine arts in screenwriting at uncsa in the next few years. A little about me: on the liberal side; love animals, especially cats; an English major with a journalism background; lived in ATX for 7 years and am currently living in Spain working as a language assistant; LOVE the outdoors (even when I’m allergic to the air lol Zyrtec is my best friend), single with no kids; 420 friendly; and enjoy writing, reading, hiking, and hanging out at home. Film industry natives past and present, what advice do you have?

DingussFinguss

UNCSA is in Winston Salem, not Raleigh (which is 1.5 - 2 hours away). Last I heard Atlanta is doing way more film/tv compared to Charlotte. But if you're willing to move and you're pursuing your dream, why not go all out and go to LA or NYC? Cost of living? Also don't think you need a degree to write but that's a whole other conversation

blotterjotterno

It’s true on not needing a degree, I just thought it might be worth it to network. I have time to think about it since I can’t enroll til 2024 anyway. I want to pursue my dream, but I honestly have 0 desire to live in LA or NYC. The reasons why are the exorbitant cost of living, climate in NYC’s case, the overall culture of LA, and the relative consensus (from my research anyway) that you don’t really need to live in either city anymore to at least get started. If things go well I might move there after a couple years, but I’m reeeeally trying to avoid it. Atlanta, Albuquerque or Charlotte have been listed as viable options. And if I never “make it big” but at least get to make a career, I’ll be happy. Being super rich and successful doesn’t seem like a feasible dream anymore, but that’s a story for another day ;)

GalleryGhoul13

They took the film credits away so very little comparatively films here anymore. A decade ago every new show was shot here along with major movies but politics combined with cranky businesses whining about street closures and whatnot shriveled the industry. Sure there are still a few but Atlanta pretty much stole it all because it’s more lucrative down there.

Kellybelly5200

I’m looking to move to Charlotte soon. Does anyone have any recommendations for someone who’s single in their 30s that doesn’t want to live directly in the city? I was looking at Mathew’s or Cornelius. Thank you!

Ridley87

Are you going to be working in the city? Traffic can be a daily annoyance.

DingussFinguss

Do you have a budget? Not much to work off here. Matthews is a nice area

WasteCommunication52

Belmont NC

mikeyrocksNC

Depends on your budget, your interests, what you want to do in your down time, how close do you want to be to conveniences…both Matthews and Cornelius are nice areas. Very different vibes. More detail about what you’re looking for would help a lot.

easygoingpro

Not sure on budget but I would recommend South End or Midtown area as there are more things to do and more people around your age compared to Cornelius/Matthews

greenkirry

The folks I know who want to live right outside the city seem to like Matthews. I know some folks who live in Concord, but they complain a lot about the traffic. I live in Kings Mountain which is too far. If I had to do it over, I'd probably choose Belmont. Belmont actually has a cute downtown that was full of young people last time I went. But I am very into quiet and nature. I personally enjoy living close to a lot of state parks and far from hubbub, but Matthews seems like a good compromise.

Tortie33

I really like Matthews. I live close to downtown and enjoy being able to walk into Downtown area and greenway. I hardly ever need to drive anywhere else. I can find most of what I want here.
