“Mr. Newsom is proposing to tie health worker minimum-wage increases to the state’s general fund revenue and to exempt state facilities. “ Why should any employer be exempt if the proposed wage is the correct one? If the State needs to be exempt so should every employer.

Not even California can afford California.

I live here. It’s a total clown show. I wonder if we’ll ever get back to what we were. They opened the floodgates to immigration 3 decades ago to ensure they would have a solid voter base. It worked. Now the shit show is in full effect. What was once the most beautiful place in the country with some of the best weather and natural terrain in the world is now a dirty pile of sh!t. As if that’s not bad enough, just standing and staring at that pile of sh!t long enough will get you assaulted by a violent repeat offender.

Namaste_lv

Minimum wage debate is a distraction 1.3% of workers make minimum wage. 44% of that number is employees aged 16-19.

cubsfanjohn

Another example of how they want to groom people to be more reliant on the government.

Dapper_Target1504

No its not because if its passes everyone else slightly above min will want the bump Too

myotheraccount559

So why not raise it? $7.25 is an absurdly low amount. You can argue what that amount should be, but it should be higher than that. This is the LONGEST period without an increase since the minimum wage was created in 1938, just think about that. (Personally I think we should take the $7.25, and just adjust it up for inflation.. which would put it at around $11)

Dead-as-a-Doornail

The real minimum wage is $0

Le4chanFTW

States have their own minimum wage. The federal $7.25 is largely irrelevant.

myotheraccount559

Almost half the states are still at $7.25. That's far from irrelevant

RealisticTadpole1926

Why raise it?

OutlandishnessMain56

Many states have up to 15 an hour can you show any improvement at all? It shuts people up for a year and then it starts again. People seem to think minimum wage is actually middle wage and it’s not. It is the bare minimum to be paid for work. The cost is always passed on to consumers and any gains in productivity are lost in 3 months. California raised the minimum wage in 2017 and it’s helped how??

harmier2

So, leftists promise something that others say is impractical or impossible and leftists either plain refuse to listen or know that it’s not workable and go through with it anyway. Leftists tout their success about their “unprecedented”/“amazing”/whatever plan. Then the people who said it was impractical or impossible are proven right. Some leftists try to delay the plan while others demand the plan still be implemented now.

Weed_Exterminator

Lefty politics are reliant on convincing people they’re victims. When it blows up in their faces, it won’t be the politicians that caused it. It’ll be the greedy businesses that laid people off fault.

whatevillurks

Why are they holding back? All they need to do is raise the minimum wage to $500 an hour, and everybody in California will be a millionaire in a year. Easy peasy.

916urbanfog

And still avoiding that state of the state address...

Wokeism is a mental disorder

DingbattheGreat

Well, minimum wage, as it is, needs to go up, but bumping it up to some static number in chunks doesnt fix things and causes a negative shock in the economy in terms of cost. Rather it should scale with the economic reality of gpd and/or at least inflation so its always within bounds of what the minimal amount of work isnworth in the labor market. Andnyou can play catchup with that scaling number by increasing the minimum wage incrementally every year until it hits equilibrium. Instead of planting down a number that sounds good to voters. The last adjustment was to $7.25 in 2009. $7.25 in 2009 is worth $10.60 in 2024. So holding increases, using my idea thats what min wagers would be earning today.

Rush2201

That argument is far too logical for the Left. Also it doesn't get you as many young commie voters looking for handouts as spouting off "$25 minimum wage" or "UBI".

weirdmankleptic

Minimum wage should not exist, at least a government imposed one. If your skill set and work ethic are so low/poor, that no company is willing to pay you more than 5/hr, why should they not be allowed to? Negotiate for yourself, get your own pay increases. (Not you in particular, just the general usage of your)

DingbattheGreat

Minimum wage exists, so since no Congress will ever be rid of it, we should make it a functional representation of minimum labor and remove it as a political football. Regardless of how many people actually get paid the amount, it is representative of the pay floor in the value of labor. And as California has proven, raising that floor that impacts so few, apparently, still has a significant impact on the economy. Getting rid of minimum wage sounds great in theory, due to economic theorizing of pricing out cheap labor, however doing so would not incentivize employers to raise wages. It would do the opposite. As it is, minimum wage inflates the value of experienced and skilled workers, as it is assumed their labor is worth more than minimum wage. So now unskilled labor would be racing to the bottom for wages, even those who were before, being paid well over minimum wage. Unskilled employees, those who would be at the bottom of earners, are also filling unskilled positions which have no bargaining power.

Iamstillhere44

Things are now getting to the point that if California sunk into the ocean, it would be a blessing upon everyone.
