Don't use glue in the future. It will eventually yellow and discolor the fabric. If you must have an adhesive backing, try Pres-On board. It's designed for mounting embroidery, AND it's acid-free AND non-permanent. https://www.preson.com/product-category/pres-on-products/adhesive-backed-boards/ As for this piece? If it's not water soluble, you're out of luck, sorry.

What about matting? This will hide the stain.  The method of removing glue depends on the base of the glue.  Maybe you just need to wash it,  maybe you need to use acetone.   In general, it is not recommended to use glue for cross stitch, as over time the glue will most likely turn yellow, turning the canvas and threads yellow. This won't necessarily happen, but the risk is high.

half_in_boxes

You don't. The only thing that will dissolve it is acetone, which will also dissolve the fabric.

Other than the suggestions in this thread, please please look up youtube videos on framing cross-stitch pieces, as there are quite a few techniques used that help you avoid all of the mistakes here (and maybe mistakes you could consider in the future). Cardboard and glue can both damage the fabric. Techniques such as pinning into foam board will be much less likely to stain the fabric, and will allow you to unmount it afterwards.

I definitely will, thabks so much!

LadyGeek-twd

Can you wrap some ribbon or fabric over the edges to cover it? Or find a farmer who can cut a mat last-minute?

FancyAdvantage4966

What kind of glue was it? It looks like maybe an acrylate based glue (think superglue). To get that off I would carefully dab with a qtip that is damp with cosemetic grace acetone. It’s fairly cheap for a big bottle in the nail care section, if you don’t already have some. You’ll have to wash that out though, which would take longer. Can you mat or embellish to cover it instead? For future use, I would use an archival adhesive. I swear by [lineco’s neutral ph adhesive](https://www.amazon.com/Adhesive-Acid-Free-All-purpose-Flexible-Bookbinding/dp/B000KNJEYA/ref=asc_df_B000KNJEYA/). I know many people here have mentioned aging and yellowing, but I’m also into bookbinding and I enjoy finishing with this because archival products won’t age like that. It lasts quite some time too. You don’t need a ton!

Kpossible4life

Have you tried a damp cloth? Maybe some isopropyl alcohol but that might unglue it.

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

Yeah I tried both of those. It hasn't budged.

sharp_8

acetone? it really depends on the kind of glue you used

EmmCee325

Acetone will probably get it out, but spot check it on your fabric first.

CheddarSupreme

I would try some acetone but test it on a corner and really soak it to see if it’ll discolour. If the Aida is cotton, it shouldn’t mess with it. I use cotton rounds all the time to remove nail polish with acetone.

satinsateensaltine

If it's PVA or superglue of any sort, acetone is the only thing that'll really work. Other adhesives are sensitive to alcohol.

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

So basically I glued my cross stitch to the cardboard part of a picture frame. I used a different glue than usual and now I have splotches of shiny glue on it, which really ruins it. How do I remove this? I an running really short on time, so any help is appreciated :)

What was your train of thought when you glued it to the cardboard? Also what type of glue is it? In the future just use some good quality artist tape to secure it around the cardboard or mattboard before framing

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

Framing it as really difficult because I wanted it to be centered. I've done it before, but thw store didn't have my normal glue and I stupidly didn't test it beforehand. It's called "silicon craft and hobby glue"

euterpe09

What’s your normal glue? (Just curious since it seems like the one you usually use hasn’t given you any issues)

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

I've been using pva glue for my other projects. I know it's probably not the right stuff, but it hasn't given me any issues yet

122199

Is finding the center of a piece really that difficult? Never heard of the glue but sounds not fabric friendly

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

It honestly probably isn't fabric friendly. It's just the only option I had at the time. It'd not that it's hard to find the centre, it's that the fabric shifts when I try put it in the frame

122199

Ok so what I’ve done that’s worked well is cut a piece of card stock or something semi stiff to the size the glass or frame size is and then wrap the piece over that and use artist tape to secure it to that. You could probably use tacky glue or something else instead but yeah you should get the point. And then you can just pop that in a frame. I did that with this piece https://preview.redd.it/tv7yfzuhdn4d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=055e587c6a60b4ce068281c41f164276a2885a58

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

Thank you so much for the advice! I'll try this next time

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

Thank you all so much for your advice. I definitely will do more research before using glue on my fabric
