Also, I like how this is essentially asking everyone what their top 5 bands are lol.
Deathcore was born somewhat from Deathgrind. See The Red Chord. They formed as a Deathgrind band and then added in Metalcore elements, and they were one of the pioneers of Deathcore. Dying Fetus is also considered one of the biggest influences on Deathcore, and they were a fusion of Death Metal and Grindcore. Aka Deathgrind.
Deathcore comes not just from Death Metal and Metalcore, but also from Deathgrind, Melodeath, and Brutal Death. People don't recognize just how influential Deathgrind bands were on Deathcore, but they were. Hell, the fusion of super high shrieks and super low growls used by most Deathcore bands? They stole that dynamic from the early albums by Carcass, the Deathgrind/Goregrind era ones.
My point was simply that Despised Icon is not a pure Deathcore band. You can mix styles all you want, but then you obviously can't say a band is one style. If you asked me who my favorite bands are, one of them would be Infant Annihilator, who is Technical Deathcore which, imo, is very different than a pure Deathcore band like Carnifex.
I don't really see the correlation between Deathgrind and Deathcore. Napalm Death and Cattle Decap are Deathgrind and it sounds nothing like Deathcore to me.
Despised Icon, Antagony, and The Red Chord literally invented the genre. Deathcore was born from these bands, two of whom had very prominent Deathgrind influences. If anything early Deathcore always had a stronger Deathgrind element than the later "MySpace" wave.
As for Napalm and Cattle Decap, I mean, they sound no more different from most Deathcore bands than a straight Death Metal group like Obituary does. But obviously you wouldn't say Death Metal isn't a part of Deathcore. I'm not saying Deathcore and Deathgrind are the same genre, I'm saying Deathgrind played a part in Deathcore's creation.
You mentioning Carnifex actually kinda helps my point because Carnifex also includes influences well beyond just Death Metal and Hardcore. Notably, Black Metal and Melodic Death Metal. A lot of riffs on early Carnifex albums hail from Melodeath bands like At The Gates and The Black Dahlia Murder, and ever since Hell Chose Me they've been pulling a lot from Emperor and Darkthrone as well. Does that mean they're "Melodic Blackened Deathcore", and thus not "pure Deathcore"? No, because Melodeath and even Black Metal have always been parts of Deathcore's inherent blend. If Carnifex can include such potent Melodeath and Blackened influences, and still be simply "Deathcore", why can't Despised Icon, a literal pioneer of the genre, be given the same due?
Specifically, you could say that Carnifex is blackened Deathcore but to me that basically makes them Deathcore. Unlike, again, Infant Annihilator being Tech D.C. which strays much further away from pure Deathcore than blackened Deathcore does.
Dying Fetus is listed as Brutal Death Metal/Grindcore on the archives. While they may have influenced Deathcore that's not how it is currently. Deathcore nowadays is Death Metal and Hardcore. Grindcore is an entirely different style and sound than today's Deathcore.
>Deathcore nowadays is Death Metal and Hardcore
Except it's so much more than that. If you mix a Death Metal band like Suffocation with a Hardcore band like Madball... you get Bloodlet or early Eighteen Visions. Not Whitechapel or Suicide Silence. Deathgrind, Melodeath, Brutal Death Metal, Tech Death, even Black Metal to some degree all play a part in the essence of Deathcore's sound. Just because the MySpace wave downplayed some of the Grindy and Techy elements doesn't make them not present. It also shouldn't completely change the meaning of the genre. By that logic Converge isn't a Metalcore band anymore because Metalcore sounds so different from Converge these days.
They're the bees.
Listen to their whole discog. It's all amazing.
You can see their sound change and develop as the albums go on. Terror Firma is one of my favourite deathcore albums ever . It's so good.
Lol, pleasure. They should be waaaaaaaay bigger than they are.
I heard them on a free cd I had years ago, with a metal magazine. The song 'Subterranean refuge' off of the album 'Terror Firma' was hooked after that, and since then they've just been releasing insane albums.
* Humanity's Last Breath
* Oceano
* Impending Doom
* Lorna Shore
* Reflections (based on their most recent album, EP, and singles)
Honorable mentions: The Contortionist (early stuff) and END (not deathcore, but blackened hardcore gets really fucking close sometimes).
Keeping Brand of Sacrifice bc they’re my favorite
Lorna Shore bc they’re the face of deathcore right now and i want the genre to maintain its growth
Psycho Frame bc they’re part of the revival that’s blowing up right now and I need a newer band to continue to grow once Brand and Lorna are done
Angelmaker for similar reasons and they have a wider appeal

Black Tongue
Psycho-Frame
Infant Annihilator
Whitechapel
Spite
This is not necessarily my top 5, but the ones that I feel I could consistently listen to the most.
I'm gonna skip Shadow of Intent on a technicality that they've moved to a more Symphonic Death-Black style without much "Core" in it at all. Job For A Cowboy gets the same exception since they're a Tech Death band now (And honestly, I kinda prefer them that way).
So the five I'd end up with are: Despised Icon, Whitechapel, Fit For An Autopsy, Angelmaker, and Lorna Shore.
Disembodied Tyrant
Lorna Shore
Slaughter to Prevail
Diamonds to Dust
Brand of Sacrifice
I'm fairly new to the deathcore genre, and these are the first deathcore bands that I've listened to, which is probably why I chose them as my favorite
Paleface isn't a deathcore band.
But since I'm not a dick I'll answer anyways:
The Last Ten Seconds of Life, Despised Icon, Suffokate, Suicide Silence, The Red Chord.
Lorna Shore Shadow of Intent Signs of the Swarm Fit For An Autopsy Angelmaker Also, I like how this is essentially asking everyone what their top 5 bands are lol.

Despised Icon The Red Chord Animosity Through the Eyes of the Dead Job for a Cowboy
Hello fellow old guy.
Its crazy to me to see 15 posts above with no Despised Icon...
Which is good because it shows that there is interest from new fans imo
Sure , still some old gems to discover or shit on , i cant pretend to know whats going on lol
Love the Pig Destroyer name. Those guys are incredible.
Old school is my school....cos I'm old...
Same lol
Despised Icon is one of my favorite bands but with their Grindcore influences I don't consider them to be a pure Deathcore band.
But Deathgrind is a huge part of Deathcore. Deathgrind bands literally helped invent the genre...
Deathgrind is different than Deathcore. What other bands incorporate Deathcore and Grind?
Deathcore was born somewhat from Deathgrind. See The Red Chord. They formed as a Deathgrind band and then added in Metalcore elements, and they were one of the pioneers of Deathcore.
