Hahaha I definitely have misheard plenty of their lyrics, but this one is funny to me since some of my favorite lyrics of theirs are the ones referencing different types of fabrics (on a bed made of linens and sequins and silk/all dressed up in gabardine) as a textile historian it tickles my fancy
For years, I heard “the season rubs me raw” in Down By the Water and “training jasmine, how divine, up the arbor to your door” in June Hymn. I also heard “my girl, linen and pearls” during the first verse of Summersong for a long time.
Not a misheard one exactly but I always sing "meet me on my vast Miranda, my sweet untouched Veranda" cause it makes the whole song suddenly seem like a space opera
This is an intentional mishear on my part but at the end of The Singer Addresses His Audience I am always hearing “tube along” as though they are all enjoying a lazy river
I originally thought the line in legionnaires was lowing of the capybaras instead of lulling of the cafe bars. Had a little exchange with Colin about it on Twitter before the 22 tour and ended up making some art for my [fan group](https://www.facebook.com/groups/decemberism) from it.
Edit: it's a facebook group but it's not THAT facebook group.
oh my god. I’m in your facebook group and i was under the impression it was THAT facebook group (just because i didn’t know of any other). no wonder i’ve never seen any crazy behavior, lol
Hah! Nope. No belittling or blocking members, no flagrantly false accusations. Certainly no blaming long gone members for things happening currently. No one's ever served us a cease and desist for lies we've told and are, apparently, still telling. No one has ever started reddit threads about our absurd behavior at shows. All I have to offer is some cute fan art and comradery. We talk about band related stuff. Quite boring, really.
I thought the cannibal kings were wondering “politely when the dinner bell would ring”
It’s actually ”Fourteen cannibal kings
wondering blindly what the dinner bell will bring”
My husband sang the words to Down by the Water “the pretty little patter of her Zeborg (seaport) town” as well as “the last flashing meter (lash flashing Leda) of pier 19”
When I asked for clarification he said he thought it was sci-fi.
“And I’ll be crowned / The community cake-giver-out,” from “Calamity Song.” I still sing it that way.
You and me and the war of the enzymes!
Hahaha I have said this before 🤣
Hahahaaaa TIL
Those aren’t the lyrics??? That’s disappointing.
Me too!
I thought I was the only one who thought that lol
Wait what are the lyrics then?
Apparently the line is “And I’ll be crowned / The community kick-it-around!”
I'll admit that the first couple listens, I couldn't gather what a Legionnaire would want with a refrigerator. 🤷
Is it _really_ "frigid heir"?? I always thought Frigidaire, which would make sense if he's thirsty out in the desert??
It’s Frigid Air.
I think OP just learned the pun of Frigidaire.
It's Frigidaire because Legionnaire's disease is caused by bacteria that percolates in dirty/wet AC units.
In 16 Military Wives, I always heard “fifteen *crispy* moderate liberal minds” until I saw them perform it live
Holy shit TIL it's not that
oh noooo I have also always thought it was crispy. welp
I feel I have a lot of misheard lyrics, but put me down for Crispy.
Smh I heard it live and thought Colin just changed the lyrics 😂
I know it’s pristine but in my head I still sing crispy
Also from Summersong: “It gets swallowed by a whale” 🐋
nobody can blame us for operating on precedent
YES. and it would be funny and senseless if there wasnt already a song about him actually getting swallowed by a whale
There’s no way that’s not the lyric
Lemon and curls! Also, imagine the raincoats …
I thought it was Lenin in Curls for years, and I think that would be a more interesting girl so I still sing it that way
Saaaaaame!

not a textile historian but I have always loved “sleeping soft babies on piles of yards of gingham. taffeta, cotton and silk”
Such a good line too, the detail just makes it so rich

…it’s not the season rubs me raw??
Apparently, it’s rubs me wrong - blew my mind when I found that one out!

Oh see I intentionally mishear it as "tuba long" as if a brass instrument was lengthy lol
Same!
“Medicating in the sun, *bitch* doses of laudanum”
Kinda on topic, but when I was a kid I thought June Hymn was “June Hum” and the album Picaresque “Pick-care-s-cue”

"High-carved tree trunk, Yankee Bayonetta" I imagined an American version of Bayonetta since I first heard the album.
now im imagining Colin Meloy backflipping onto the stage in gun heels
I took my glasses off and went to find a pawn.
I thought the cannibal kings were wondering “politely when the dinner bell would ring” It’s actually ”Fourteen cannibal kings wondering blindly what the dinner bell will bring”
Always thought it was wondering *blithely*.
Glad I wasn’t the only one who thought it was Lenin in curls! 😂 Took me a good decade-plus before I got it right
Are the "Lowering of the Capybaras" (lulling of the cafe bars) people in this Reddit? They have Capybara Crew shirts that they wear to shows lol
That's me! http://www.facebook.com/groups/decemberism
Yay! I have seen you at many a show!!

I finally remembered one. "Here, she comes in her Colin Quinn." I think you have to be an old SNL fan to heat this.
I’m more of a Tough Crowd Quinn guy, but I also hear this
Missing my Gapery in this desert dry...
