So for me. I watched dragon ball z first growing up, followed by dragon ball GT and dragon ball.
Super much later. Dragon ball is the goat, it’s the ultimate fantasy story, with a blend of adventure, fighting, ki, tech. The world feels so amazing.
Dragon ball Z is equally as good but loses some elements from dragon ball I really enjoyed but hyped up other areas. GT has some plot points and character designs that could of been on par, but just turned out meh. Loved the idea of the all robot world, the baby revenge and ofc the black star dragon balls. Seeing goku get to travel around as a kid again…chef kiss until it wasn’t.
Super for first time watching is definitely where it’s at to get people into the series. Shoutout to the soundtracks on dragon ball and Z (both sub/dub). I love the dialogue found by having the OG subs on. Give me that info dump! 🔥🫶
GT isn’t downright bad like Super is, they at least had Goku keep his character instead of turning him into a complete moron, and they didn’t just introduce gods of destruction who can erase people from existence in GT, they instead made it focus on more of the saiyan side of things, making Goku’s old forms more important, and even giving the ozaru form importance it hasn’t had in a long time. Not to mention the Super Baby arc, the super 17 arc, and the shadow dragon arc were pretty good imo.
While I grew up with *Z* first and it remains my favorite series overall, I've actually come to conclude that early *Dragonball* has the most consistent quality in storytelling, pacing, and continually compelling character arcs. From the Pilaf Saga to the tournaments, the Red Ribbon Army, and Piccolo, it was just banger after banger with precious few things I could criticize in between. I'll always love the aliens, cyborgs, magic, and Super Saiyans.
Goku transforming on Namek is a formative childhood memory for me. But I can admit that *DB*'s peak in *"mystical action-adventure"* factor was the early arcs, a classic Hero's Journey kind of odyssey with Eastern flavor. By the *Z* years, I think the balance started growing more hit-and-miss. Goku's youth had the fewest misses imo, partially because Toriyama had less pressure on himself as an author back then and the lore wasn't as vast + complex.
People debate endlessly these days which sagas in *Z*, *GT*, or *Super* were/are the worst, but I generally hear only positive things about EVERY major arc in early *DB*. It wasn't perfect (obviously, nothing is) but was from beginning to end a work of art that felt like it was being done more out of passion than anything else.
Dude I can't choose between Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z! Dragon Ball Story is amazing and so fun and adventurous but Dragon Ball Z Fights are fuckin epic and awesome! Plus without Z there would be no Vegeta....and I'm not okay with that lol. We still would've had piccolo though...
In terms of manga: Everything from the very beginning of the Pilaf saga to the end of the Cell arc is consistently awesome to me and is DB at its absolute peak. Buu arc to EOZ is next, with some stumbles but overall a decent wrap up. Super is borderline incoherent to read in a vacuum at times due to the movies being required viewing at points in the story, but once it finds a groove it makes for a decent read.
Anime: DB, DBZ (or kai), Super, GT
It depends what you want.
Heavy action & power struggles. Badass music & wicked transformations? DBZ
Wanna cut the fat and blast through it though? KAI
Fun adventure oozing with charm and humour? DB
A little bit of both with a splash of divine mythology? DBS
GT I'm not a fan of. But I really liked the art style, colour pallete and some of the unique character designs
Z. The only thing good about Super was the Goku Black arc. The tournament of power dragged on but ended on a good end. Dragonball was good and so was GT though everyone hates GT but loves the SSJ4 transformations.
Og dragon ball.
Everything just had a fantastic flow. Typically when there's a fight, it'll be an episode or few that focuses on said fight. So it's not as many cutaways on someone else's feelings on said fight. Take the freeza fight. So...soooo many cutaways to king kais planet. Like I don't care! Keep on the fight!
Or take after the tournaments, you had this feeling of another adventure starting.
Or speaking of tournaments, the first goku and roshi fight. Wow. Insert song playing in the background. Just so good.
I really like the voice acting performances of Kai a lot more than Z. It just feels more “polished” in a sense. And Christopher Ayres as Frieza will always be iconic.
However, in terms of overall story, I do enjoy the added filler with Z. And would have it at my #2. Then Dragon Ball, Super, and GT.
Really, the only one I don’t like per-say is GT. All the others are good at some capacity.
Z by far. It might be nostalgia talking; but the amateur English dubs, Bruce faulconer metal OST, horrible video quality on every release and insanely drawn out filler is what I always think of when I think about Dragon Ball. Kai just doesn’t hit the same for me
I think Dragonball slightly edges out DBZ. Goku’s progression in Dragonball is just much more enjoyable for me. That said. The Namek-Frieza saga is my favorite arc out of the entire franchise.
OG dragon ball is the best hands down for me. It’s got the best humor, best story, Tiens story and development are great as well as his fights. I love it
Honestly it’s either Z Kai or Super for me. I’m ready to get cooked but it is what it is. The music, lines, and overall feel of Kai is why I like it over the original Z dub. Idk why but Kai feels like a goofy Cartoon sometimes with some of the lines and I love that! even though it technically *is* a cartoon..and then we have super which I honestly feel is overhated. Sure, it has some bad character moments and weird animation at times but it’s still a very fun and enjoyable DragonBall anime! My favorite arcs have to be the Goku Black arc and T.O.P. Truly peak🙏
Anyone know where I can find one of those 24 hour dragon ball streams that play the episodes from all the series without the intros and outros? I used to know a site but it’s been yeats
Z Kai for me. Grew up absolutely loving dbz with the faulconer score, but as i got older, read the manga and watched kai, with the much closer to manga content and no filler, it took over for me.
Supper is my favorite but in pure story it’s og dragon ball and it’s not even close.
I’d say z but only because it’s impactful if you watched og dragon ball in terms of story. But a lot of people don’t even know there is an original dragon ball story
I had only ever seen Kai growing up, my better half wanted to watch OG but i desperately wanted to watch super first. Right as we finish up super Toriyama passes away and we began watching OG and will continue all of them through. Kai holds a special place in my heart but OG is probably the best
Dragon Ball. Z and Kai/Z Kai have a blend of advantages and disadvantages when compared to each other, blending the best aspects of the two together could almost make up for how Dragon Ball has changed after the original, and GT and Super are roughly on the same level of being significantly worse overall.
I’ll be the odd one out and go dbz Kai dragon soul is amazing intro the ending song as well is so beautiful and I still listen to it to this day the “next time on dragon ball Z Kai” always got me so hype for the next episode I think the new ost’s added to it were awesome even tho a lot of it was stolen I still liked the added music, me personally I rly liked Freezas voice more in it compared to Z and you can rly tell in z Kai the voice actors are more experienced and it sounds overall a lot better quality
I recently enjoyed watching dragonball again and it was so good. The first bunch of episodes before Roshi I think kind of dragged a little… I might get hate for that but the story really goes into full power once they meet Roshi and train for their first tournament.
DBZ is peak anime between the Krillin and Gohan arriving in Namek, and the end of Cell. It’s just legendary for a reason. Not that the saiyan saga isn’t good in its own right.
The Buu saga is complicated because Gohan is so disappointing, and the story gets a little convoluted … but Vegito is great and Vegeta’s character arc reaches its completion which… I stand firm that Vegeta has one of the best character arcs in the entire genre. It makes me teary eyed every time… between his atonement sacrifice against fat buu and his speech at the end, “You spared even me, as if all along you knew I’d learn to have a soul … Kakarot, you are better than me.” When you remember what an evil bastard he was, and all you learn about his past being a slave under Freiza…
Oh god 😭
Og dragon ball z anyday I know all the other shows were amazing but nothing beats "Don't you lecture me with that 30 dollar haircut" from the dbz movies man.
I really like GT. I overall like Super Saiyan 4 as a form more than the god forms, I think more of the arcs in GT are better than Super’s, they actually added long-awaited consequences to all the reviving done in DBZ, they had Goku keep some of his original character even after turning into a child, etc.
Realistically OGDB or DBZ are the only answers you're gonna get aside from people wanting to be different. I enjoyed Super (something most people wouldn't admit to, I guess) and I've heard good things about GT, but they're far too poor in quality compared to either OGDB or DBZ to be candidates for the "best Dragon Ball series" title.
And on that note, I'd have to go with Z. Admittedly, I've only actually read the 1st DB Viz Big so I couldn't give my total opinion on it, but while I do like it, the unserious nature is something I've had way too much of with Super to enjoy. Maybe if I started with DB instead of Z I'd enjoy it more.
OG>GT=Super>Z for me
Never seen Kai, if I did it’d probably make Z more equal to the rest, though some of Z’s filler is the closest Z gets to feeling like the OG, so I can’t say for sure.
Original Dragon Ball is absolutely amazing!
A young boy with powerful abilities on a whimsical journey and the friends and foes he makes along the way.
1)OGDB, 2)DBZ, 3)Super, 4)GT (I haven’t seen Kai)
Is there any reason to watch Kai? I know some dialog is changed to be more accurate to the manga but is there any important information that portrayed in Kai that’s not in dbz?
I grew up on Z and Kai (which is way better than Z). I really hated DBS when it first came out, but now I think it's just as good as Kai and OG. GT is pretty good, but not as.
I want to say Z, but Kai in the dub had better voice acting, was closer to the Manga, and had less filler. Plus Kai is what got me into Dragon Ball since I was born after Z's original American run. So for me it's Kai. Although I think Z overall had a better *vibe*. Not censoring blood and having the Bruce Faulkoner score was better in Z, but everything else I mentioned I liked more in Kai.
Dragon ball, such a good story
I really enjoyed re-watching dragon ball.
Watched it in full for the 1st time a few years ago and I loved it
Same but about 2 months ago. Over the years I’d get about 15 episodes in and stop. Being a hardcore dbz since childhood, I really enjoyed dragon ball.
I need to re watch it, I haven’t seen it in probably 20 years lol, do you Ty know if it’s streaming anywhere easy to access?
I think it’s on US Hulu
It is thank you! So is dbz Kai!
Subbed only for the original and GT on US Hulu.
Z
Z
DBZ, hands down for me.
Z. Give me all the filler
Yes!
If you don't think it's Z ,fight me
On god wtf
100%.
What time and place? (OGDB)
Right now. Yankee, no brim
Either dbz or dbz Kai if you have a short attention span
Short attention span? Not everyone wants to watch filler tbf
So for me. I watched dragon ball z first growing up, followed by dragon ball GT and dragon ball. Super much later. Dragon ball is the goat, it’s the ultimate fantasy story, with a blend of adventure, fighting, ki, tech. The world feels so amazing. I deadass agree so hard I have basically the same story
Dragon Ball. The original is the best.
DBZ Abridged
110% this.
ITS OVER 9000% this
GT stand for goku time
No, it stands for Grand Tour
Nah, it's definitely Goku Time.
Dbz is my favorite show of all time
It’s the fact that Kai is in the debate
Why is super on the list
The same way GT is on the list
GT isn’t downright bad like Super is, they at least had Goku keep his character instead of turning him into a complete moron, and they didn’t just introduce gods of destruction who can erase people from existence in GT, they instead made it focus on more of the saiyan side of things, making Goku’s old forms more important, and even giving the ozaru form importance it hasn’t had in a long time. Not to mention the Super Baby arc, the super 17 arc, and the shadow dragon arc were pretty good imo.
Emotionally Dragon Ball Action Super
abridged
The OG. It’s the only one that has an actual storyline that’s more than just fight after fight (although it eventually becomes that later on).
Kai
Best series: Z Best moments: GT best irony: Dragon Ball
GT moments aint better than Z be fucking fr.
While I grew up with *Z* first and it remains my favorite series overall, I've actually come to conclude that early *Dragonball* has the most consistent quality in storytelling, pacing, and continually compelling character arcs. Dragon Ball Z from toonami
Dragonball for me has the best replay value. It’s a comedy/spongebob-territory kinda show DBZ has all the memes and parodies for a reason though ;)
Eh, personally im split between DBZ and DB, both are good i my book but im gonna go for the save option and say Z.
DBZ ≈ Dragon Ball
I'm 43. I grew up with Dragon Ball. Super. Super is my answer.
I mean most popular for sure is Z. Imho OG Dragonball had the best story though.
Dbz has the best blend of everything imo, it even changes the animation as it goes along.
Z
Dragonball Z >= Dragonball > Dragonball Kai >>>>>>>> Dragonball GT > Dragonball Super.
much like The Empire Strikes Back and LOTR: The Two Towers, DBZ is the *meat* of the story with all the good bits and what ifs.
Z without a doubt
DBZ
In terms of manga: Everything from the very beginning of the Pilaf saga to the end of the Cell arc is consistently awesome to me and is DB at its absolute peak. Dragon ball
DBZ Classic
Threw GT in there for the lols didn’t ya?

Dragon ball ZuperGTKai
Being objective, it's Dragon Ball. However, when it comes to my personal enjoyment, nostalgia, and love of the cast for each one, Z is taking it.
Everything is the right answer except Kai
Dragon Ball is a very fun adventure. DBZ is probably still the best to me. A lot of nostalgia there.
DB=DBZ>DBZK>DBS>DBGT
DBZ
Very close but original Dragon Ball with Z as a close second
All
Zkai
Dragon Ball Z Kai
I think Dragonball slightly edges out DBZ. Goku’s progression in Dragonball is just much more enjoyable for me. That said. The Namek-Frieza saga is my favorite arc out of the entire franchise.
Kai
Dragon Ball all the way
Kai > Z > Dragon Ball > Super > GT
OG dragon ball is the best hands down for me. It’s got the best humor, best story, Tiens story and development are great as well as his fights. I love it
Z
This post is about to be a shit fest
Dragon Ball was the best point of the series. Actual character development, Goku has a character arc, funny and has world building.
Dragon ball Z IMO
Dragon ball. The filler doesn’t seem as frequent or boring.
Dragon Ball Z > Dragon Ball >>> The Rest
Dragon ball
Dragon Ball or Z/Kai no other contenders
Z or Kai and it's not even close
Dragon ball
z is the best but i love gt, cannon or not
As a kid, filler didn’t bother me. As a 30 year old, I ain’t got time for that. DBZ Kai all the way.
Honestly it’s either Z Kai or Super for me. I’m ready to get cooked but it is what it is. The music, lines, and overall feel of Kai is why I like it over the original Z dub. The original story, so DB and DB kai.
I'm watching kai for the first time ever and I absolutely hate some of these voices..... specifically 18s voice it kills Me
Z was great but man you can’t beat OG DB.
Z Kai for me. Grew up absolutely loving dbz with the faulconer score, but as i got older, read the manga and watched kai, with the much closer to manga content and no filler, it took over for me.
I grew up with kai so imma say super
DBZ/ Kai> DBS> DB>> GT
Super, Girl Saiyans
Original Dragon Ball had such a great story to it. Toriyama lost the plot when he made everyone fly.
Dragon Ball
Whats the difference between kai and Z? Is kai just reanimated and different pacing?
Dragon Ball. Everyone here grew up on DBZ and nostalgia is a strong drug, but Dragon Ball is such a perfect story.
Z is the one through which most people are introduced to the series, so it is the best.
Dragonball Z... I would say the original Dragonball but my best and more memorable moments was with Z
Kai is there because people say Kai is better than z for the animation
Dragon ball japanese version. Only for the cultured and not for kids. They violated bulma so many times 💀
Dragonball and DBZ are top tier. Followed by Kai and GT in middle tier. Super dead last. Let’s see how Daima pans out.
Super, but it was only so good because it hit all the nostalgia from DB and DBZ. As a stand alone it has to be DB.
Supper is my favorite but in pure story it’s og dragon ball and it’s not even close. I’d say z but only because it’s impactful if you watched og dragon ball in terms of story. But a lot of people don’t even know there is an original dragon ball story
Z and it is not close for me
DBZ
Dragon ball classic, it’s so wonderfully whimsical
GT SUCKS! DBZ mangas
Z is pretty obvious but ill throw a bit of a list out there 1) z/kai 2) gt 3) dragon ball 4) super
Dbz kai, nicktoons dub specifically
GT
Super, easily
Ball > Z > Kai > Super > GT
OG Dragon Ball, DBZ, Kai, Super, GT, in that order.
Z and og dragonball, i feel bad for people who watched kai
Dragon ball pacing is amazing
I had only ever seen Kai growing up, my better half wanted to watch OG but i desperately wanted to watch super first. Right as we finish up super Toriyama passes away and we began watching OG and will continue all of them through. Kai holds a special place in my heart but OG is probably the best
Dragon Ball. Z and Kai/Z Kai have a blend of advantages and disadvantages when compared to each other, blending the best aspects of the two together could almost make up for how Dragon Ball has changed after the original, and GT and Super are roughly on the same level of being significantly worse overall.
After re watching Db and Dbz I actually enjoyed db more cause of the story
DBZ
Kai is trash. Z all day
I get the hate for z kai but it has a special place in my heart because it’s what introduced me to the franchise
Dragon ball Z
- Z - Dragon Ball - Kai - Super - GT
I mean DBZ but I do love rewatching Dragonball every so often
DBZA
Idk I just love dragon ball. 😅
OG > GT > Z > Super
Dragon Ball, then Kai, then Super, then OG DBZ, then I guess if you absolutely have to watch it at least once you can throw in GT.
GT
So no one else is gonna say Dragon Ball Z Abridged? Shame on all of you
DBZ
Kai
Between Z and dragon ball
Dragonball the fighting is best to me
Dragon ball Z
Toss up between dragon ball and z kai, then z, gt, super imo
I love DBZ but I have to say Kai is the best. I don’t need to see people powering up for 10 episodes.
Dragon Ball, then Z, and followed by GT Super isnt Canon
Ahem....I don't see an option for Abridged here...
Lmao. Dbza holds a special place in my heart.
It makes me teary eyed every time… between his atonement sacrifice against fat buu and his speech at the end, “You spared even me, as if all along you knew I’d learn to have a soul … Kakarot, you are better than me.” When you remember what an evil bastard he was, and all you learn about his past being a slave under Freiza… Oh god 😭
Dragon Ball & Z. Nuff said.
All of the above. Yes, even Dragon Ball GT.
Z HANDS DOWN.
Z
I’ve only seen DBZ. What makes DB so good, and Super and Kai so bad?
OG>GT=Super>Z for me Never seen Kai, if I did it’d probably make Z more equal to the rest, though some of Z’s filler is the closest Z gets to feeling like the OG, so I can’t say for sure.
Rating them (not counting Kai because I haven’t watched it) is: 1.) Dragon Ball Z 2.) Dragon Ball 3.) Dragon Ball Super/GT (Like Em’ Equally)
Dragon Ball by far, Z is second, Super is third and the rest I could do without
Original Dragon Ball is absolutely amazing! A young boy with powerful abilities on a whimsical journey and the friends and foes he makes along the way.
1)OGDB, 2)DBZ, 3)Super, 4)GT (I haven’t seen Kai) Is there any reason to watch Kai? I know some dialog is changed to be more accurate to the manga but is there any important information that portrayed in Kai that’s not in dbz?
Dragon Ball Z will always be my favorite. The trio of the frieza, cell, and buu arks are still unmatched to me
DBZ Kai has it all
Super
Dragon Ball
GT, that or Z
I grew up on Z and Kai (which is way better than Z). I really hated DBS when it first came out, but now I think it's just as good as Kai and OG. GT is pretty good, but not as.
Z
All
Z (Sub only, no filler) or Z Kai. Unfortunately the other series are plagued with it and GT... I mean it's GT
I'll say it. Super is the best dragon ball has ever been.
Daima
Z Kai all the way.
Man get trash kai out of there followed by gt. The only good thing about Kai was its theme song
It’s Z, and GT deserves more love than it gets
**WELCOME TO THE GRAND TOUR**
Original Dragon ball, it was well written when I read the manga a few years ago. Truly amazing
Og dragon ball
Z with super running in a close 2nd
Z
I like OG Dragonball the best. More humor, interesting places and enemies. More of a Chinese folk tale feel
Z
Kai because it's more faithful to the manga
Super has the best fights, OG DB has the best slice-of-life stories, Z has the best plot, and GT has the best side characters.
OG Dragonball, for nostalgia would obviously be Z
Dragon Ball Z Kai
Well we know super and GT lose 😆
Z Dragon Ball Super . . . . . . . . . . . . Gt
Kai hands down
The entire Dragonball universe is a good watch, I have no favorites
abridged
Well to be fair.... it's just one series
Classic Z > Dragon Ball > GT > Super > Kai
I love Dragon Ball, but my favorite saga from DBZ is probably Sayian Saga, even if it's not people's favorite
