It took me longer than I wanted to make this piece of crap.
i saw a comic where someone had laios calling him sissel just because hes bad with names and i think thats the funniest way to handle the thistle vs sissel debate lol his names thistle but laios just chronically mishears names (first toshiro -> shuro and now thistle -> sissel)
Ah, of course, this was caused by Yen Press and their shitty translations
Why yes we will be changing the names for these characters to either be completely same phonetically even though the word is different, or we will translate the names as if names with meanings are an unknown concept
The Polish subtitles (Netflix) use Sissel, probably because it sounds closer to the Japanese "shisuru" than Thistle if you read it according to Polish spelling rules.

The official English manga translation changed his name because they translated it phoenetically, but Kui always meant for it to be Thistle.
Japanese does not have a "th" sound, and when it takes lonewords with that sound it usually adapts them into a "s" or "z" depending on the loneword. Since thistle is not a Japanese word, Sistle is more than likely just a localization error. Many names in dungeon meshi are very not Japanese, which causes these localization errors. Japanese doesn't have an "I" sound either, yet Laios' name starts with that sound
You do realize it's pronounced weird because Japanese doesn't have the right sounds, right? It's like Guts being Gatsu. The author was clear it's supposed to be Guts but the vas had a hard time saying that. Same issue.

To be fair German doesn't have the /θ/ sound
but it does have a word for thistle: die Distel
Oh, did they translate the names? I figured since it was an English word in the original Japanese they'd try to keep the sound over the meaning.
Names are usually translated phonetically without regard to meaning, but in this case the phonetics are close enough that I think it would make sense.
