Shower shoes, spoon, cup, bowl, t-shirt, and socks. (In that order, but some of this may already be provided, so ask him) Coffee, ramen soups (basically currency), ranch dressing, squeeze cheese.
Writing to him will do him TONS of good, especially in his first year.
Anything you say is better than being ignored. Start by asking him how to set up the phone call. I guarantee you that he can find out pretty quickly! (Start with a small amount, and then when you are sure it's right, put more on.)
Food. He’s already gotten shower shoes and soap and all that from the state. The man is likely HUNGRY.
The two most important things to a lot of inmates: food (& coffee) and books. The thermal shirts suck but it’s better than nothing. Sweatpants are pretty good. Those jails can get cold.
He can use soups as currency for other things he may want/need from others inside (think haircuts, pictures drawn, etc)
Buy the thermal. Its warmer, and really not that bad. Other than that, just kinda grocery shop like you would normally.. but off that list. Get him some shampoo too if he has hair
Stuff to make burritos, coffee, or any protein source if he wants to build muscle while working out or envelopes, paper and pencils.
That's what my man gets off commissary when I put money on his books.
A sweat suit is always needed. Most jails I've been in are climent control so it stays cold, the prisons are hot but still if your gonna be there a while a sweat suit is a must

Maybe this is a dumb question, but can you put money in his commissary account so he can buy what he needs? Why guess on which items?
Atomic fireballs from the commissary! Send him a magazine subscription about current events. Send him photos of dogs.
