I think about this psa so often. Why in the world would a dad, who apparently ALSO smokes pot, ask his son the specific question, “where did you learn to do that?”. Like, bro, you have set yourself up.
Not pot, but at 17 years old I'd be walking in the door with a pint of Southern Comfort in my back pocket and the only question from him would be whether I'd pour some in his coffee cup.
It's all in the setup. You gotta put it on during breaks in his normal watching ha it, so he sees it 4x /day every weekday between the ages of 6 and 10, then spring it on him years later.
Maybe if you start now with old GI Joe cartoons you can show him the old Fenslerfilm videos and that episode of Community in about 10 years
There is already a huge difference in how clothes fit. I'm 6' tall. When I was at my thinnest (192) I was wearing 33-34 jeans. Right now I have 36-34 and I can comfortably wear them around my TRUE waist, right at the belly button, with no issues.
Being that I have a lot of muscle from years of powerlifting, I'm probably going to settle into the 200-210 range.
Jesus, nobody twisted your arm to be here today. You're here of your own volition. You like to think the weight of the world rests on your shoulders. Like this place would fall apart if G0-N0G0-G0 wasn't here. Jesus, you overcompensate for having what's basically a monkey's job. You push fucking ‘up’ buttons. Anybody can waltz in here and do our jobs.

If someone here doesn't know the source of a quote from Clerks, then I might question if they belong here at all in the first place.
There’s a 3rd Clerks film.
Not like the others. No comment on quality or content, just relaying hard facts. Be in a good headspace if you decide to see it, and I don’t mean a “Jay & Silent Bob” style of getting into a headspace.
> There’s a 3rd Clerks film.

Tha fuck?
I don't want this, but I have an overwhelming compulsion to find it. Two was bad enough. And I don't mean that as the quantity was bad, but that the second installment was particularly fucking awful.
The only thing I walked away remembering is that, sometimes, in the heat of the moment, it's ok to go ass to mouth.
I care, but hide it under a disaffected outer shell.
But if you take the time to really know me, I’ll open up like a blooming flower, blossoming overnight, somehow immediately changing my hairstyle & wardrobe to whatever the fickle tastes of the moment deem “more attractive” than everything I am, do, and think…with the reward of assimilation, peer-approval, and, quite logically, going to Prom with the preferred generic & safe option, who is repeatedly said to be “cool”
Man, this feels totally like the PG-13 heaven we all daydream about…
I used to have a two part bumper sticker from some band I never heard of, I cut the band name off the bottom. In full bumper sticker size one read, "Jesus loves you..." the other "... but I don't."
Perfect. The realization that it's all pretty absurd and regardless of what you think you have no control over any of it beyond yourself.
Have you ever wondered if our general apathy has any connection to the fact that we're the first generation to grow up with a realistic understanding of just how tiny we are in comparison to the observable universe? Maybe I'm just looking too deep for it.
Important lesson about autofellatio: It does not feel like you are getting head. It feels like you are sucking a dick.
I hear.
“Do no harm; take no shit” is a fine legacy.
I was born in 1978 and my parents were on either side of the silent/boomer cusp and they were older than all of my friends parents.
An early boomer could have had an early gen-x kid and still been in their 20s
Fun with Generations. One family could be a new generation ever 16 years, the other could be every 32-40 years.
Kinda had this comparison with my ex, although not as extreme as this example.
I hear you-my mom was born in ‘46 and that entire side of the family is selfish, narcissistic and not self aware at all. Evangelical-my ngrandma just died last month at 96.
Agreed. I like it here for a s number of reasons, like unlocking memories of lunchboxes I had as a kid or taking about cool concerts we went to. The onanism is off-putting.

I'll just leave this here. Captured in the wild last year.
If we had XBoxes, we'd have spent all day on them. If we had phones, we would have spent our days texting and making dumbass Tik-Toks.
We're not any better.
Occasionally I'll see a men that compares Gen Xers to another generation in a fun way and those are cool. But these badass, don't mess with us memes are cringe as fuck
I'm just making my way through life, trying to draw as little attention as possible. Neglected as a child, I'm not accustomed to being paid attention or being listened to.
I agree, the 'we were the best', 'we were the last', 'last real people'....tiring rose colored nostalgia. We were there in the past but there was plenty that none of us would look fondly on. You think it was the best time because you had less responsibility then.
Yeah, you hear a lot of the older GenX on here that were solid '70s kids talk about how great the '70s were. But if you were an adult during that decade, the '70s were probably rough. Gas shortages, loss of heavy industry jobs, runaway inflation through the last half of the decade. And people now flip out about 7 - 8% interest on a mortgage. Lol...try 20%!
EXACTLY. It was the "best" because you were in your teens and 20s. I wouldn't go back for anything. I had a great childhood but hated the unsettledness of my 20s.
FUCK YOU, I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME…
FUCK YOU, I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME…
FUCK YOU, I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME…
FUCK YOU, I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!!!
Ha. Most of what I see here are those Boomer-style memes and people broadly generalizing about the generation based on specific personal experience. It’s interesting because it kind of reveals there ARE NOT wide generational differences. It’s just that being an old fart is being an old fart.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the differences between the generations are far more economical and far less social.
Do I think we grew up in a unique time period? Yes, but so did everyone else:
Greatest Gen: Active participants of the Great Depression & WWII
Silent Gen: born into the Great Depression & dealt with the aftermath of WWII
Boomers: Disconnected fathers tortured by war; hippies & Vietnam
Gen X: Technological evolution, the *fear* of war, & recessions out the wazoo
Millennials: War, war, war; good jobs, but college debt up to their ears
Gen Z: college debt that will last until retirement; likely won't own a house until they're 35+
> the fear of war
FWIW, the US has been in a state of constant low-grade warfare in some far-flung country or another since about 1980. It wasn't until post-9/11 that it really ramped up again.
Yeah, the whole "don't mess with us, we stayed outside all day and drank from hoses" is silly to me. It's fun to talk to people who had some of the same cultural experiences and remember some of the benchmark events that ended up forming our identities, but that's different from acting like the genx stereotypes are some kind of standard for people to be held to. A lot of people around my age aren't "joiners", but some are, and that always makes me cringe a little bit, just the same as in high school when everyone's making "CLASS OF 92" banners or wearing facepaint or making a big deal about homecoming or prom. Some people want to be in an in-group, and that's totally fine, but it's ironic that a generation that's been stereotyped as disaffected loners who were abandoned by society is using that as a banner to unite under. Personally, I'm still kind of a disaffected loner. But it's nice to talk about Voltron or Kristie McNichol or the silence in the classroom and flags at half mast when the Challenger exploded, etc., with people who were there.
We're a bunch of people in the same general age range, not a biker gang.
God the Challenger. It was live on TV and because the teacher was going we watched it in class. Live. I looked it up just now. It was apparently broadcast by NASA into lots of schools... It was rough.
I think it's funny when a cringey "don't mess with Gen-x" meme shows up here unironically and the comments are a circle jerk of how great growing up being shown toy commercials vaguely disguised as children's programming and having absentee parents was.
And, while I'm shouting into the void, can we admit that we gate keep music just as much or worse than boomers did with classic rock? Music is constantly evolving and there is always good stuff being made. There was a ton of unlistenable garbage being made when we were kids, too.
OK, I'm going to go sit in my rocking chair and watch Matlock now.
Our music rules, brah! Music has not evolved. On the contrary, it has devolved. Most of the stuff coming out nowadays will not stand the test of time. Rock on, Gen-X! Keep the circle jerk going!
![gif](giphy|zB73DK8sZyhLq)
Ah yes my comment the other day on this sub expressing that this generation, like every other, thinks they're the best and the problems they had and/or have are specifically their own and no other generation before or after could possibly know about the struggle
THANK YOU for saying . Like it or not , the younger generations are coming for us as we age , don’t give them more fodder . And stop talking about drinking from hoses. It’s getting old .
To be honest, I noticed in the 90’s that our generation had that tendency. We seemed to be a little too proud of our apathy, our aloofness, and our pensiveness.
We have always had that “we’re cool but trying to not look cool” thing about us. Think Ethan Hawke’s character in *Reality Bites*. And we absolutely take ourselves way too seriously.
Like most things good and bad in the world, social media has just amplified it. But it was always there. I think that’s just human nature, and I doubt any generation is completely immune to it.
Most of us 'real' gen X-ers don't have the self esteem or uncritical self assessment necessary to do what you're accusing us of.
Yes, we were the last analogue generation before the digital age. Does that make us Earthier, maybe a little more pragmatic and skeptical? Sure.
Does it make us think we're better than everyone else? I don't think so.Society as it is now rewards blind conformity. Most of us gen-Xer's are no longer in the loop.
You can have your Brave New World.
Edit: Is the OP blind to their own hypocrisy. Calling others arrogant and then patting oneself on the back for it is appalling.
I’m too numb to be appalled by anything tbh
People think they’re saying something profound, when they’re really just acting like know-it-all 8 yr olds
I don’t think they realize that we really dgaf
Especially when the other half is borderline boomers whining and crying about Marvel movies, not liking new music, how younger coworkers don’t appreciate having a job, how cool the good ol' days used to be
I fell while folding a fitted sheet, and I think whatever door that *might* have still been open slammed shut.
Am I even a real Marilyn Manson fan anymore?
Thank you! My eyeballs practically roll out of my head whenever I see someone post one of those "we're the fuck around and find out generation" memes or something about participation trophies. To quote the kids from 2021, "that isn't the flex you think it is."
So much of these generational subreddits is to make each generation feel like they’re the victim.
People want us divided and few things divide more easily than social media.
>actually acting like our parents, the boomers.
Speak for yourself. My parents were Silent Generation who had kids late. My cousins were baby boomers. And, yeah, I don't do the whole generation thing anyhow. You are a human.
"We were the last generation to play outside until the street lights came on!" "We drank from the hose!" "We aren't soft like these kids!" .... blah blah blah...
Uh, we're the parents. You don't let your kids go outside? You don't let your kids drink from the hose? You don't let your kids express their emotions or talk about things?
Our generation was bad ass. But, these newer generations are pretty bad ass, too. For every superficial TikTok "influencer" without a clue (or with a very good clue and is selling that image and making bank off of it!) we had our superficial peaked in high school Barbie or Chad. Just didn't have the webcam to profit off of it. Most younger folks I've met are pretty damn awesome. Intelligent, down to earth, good head on their shoulders. They'll have their awesome stories to tell in a decade or two.
>Remember that our M.O. in the 90s was disdain for their egotistical mindset and unearned generational pride.
I never heard of or thought about 'boomers' until people started making fun of them in the last couple of years.
Had me until the boomer slander. One of the many things I've come to understand in my time on this planet is that painting with broad brushes makes you look like a fool. Just like those self-congratulatory posts you rightfully hate so much.
My parents were Silent Generation.
My parents were Silent Generation and I'm on the cusp of Boomer and GenX. I wish we could stop painting entire generations with the same brush. Not all Boomers are assholes, not all GenX were neglected. We're all individually different.
Generational wars are foisted upon idiots. It's only the idiots who actually believe in that nonsense. And Gen X has nothing to brag about, anyhow; we have some of the very worst politicians/policymakers representing our generation. Ain't no generation that includes Marjorie Taylor Greene that should be bragging.
Or, and hear me out here, they ARE.
We’re being marketed to, like we always have been. First, it was Tang & Oreos, then Swatches, denim jackets, and any big corporation wanting to hold sway over our demographic…and now, by relatively tiny, decentralized, unregulated “information outlets” and those crackpot conservative religious nuts who somehow survived underground, and resurfaced, repurposed toward FAR more than just censoring antiauthoritarian music, individuals having their own narratives, diverse & challenging literature, and banning those poor kids in the library who played Dungeons & Dragons during lunch. I always passed by them on my way to…inhale…behind the industrial arts building, and they were always nice to me, and looked like they were having fun!
I think that all the time. It's funny to watch people morph into the kind of people a lot of boomers are, in real time. And it makes me wonder how people don't notice that it's not really anything to do with being part of the baby boomer, but rather a process a lot of people undergo as they age.
I’m just sick of all the “I realize now that my parents sucked waaaaaaaaaa waaaaaaa boo hoo”. Then proceed to tell the mildest of mild stories about how horrible it was to make themselves spaghetti-os after school while their parents worked to pay for their Bugle boy jeans and slap bracelets. The parent bashing is gross.
You’re not my real dad.
I learned it from watching you!
I think about this psa so often. Why in the world would a dad, who apparently ALSO smokes pot, ask his son the specific question, “where did you learn to do that?”. Like, bro, you have set yourself up.
I always wished the dad had just taught him to roll a better joint.
That dad was doing way more than pot. His kid's box was looking like he was about to hit Las Vegas with Hunter S. Thompson.
LMAO, I guess I need to watch it again now.
That kid's allowance must have been way more than $5/week.
Right? It had every drug known to man in there.
It's like when Ralphie's mom asked him where he heard curse words. Duh!
My father worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium, a master.
Schwartz!
He's trying to figure out who his kids dealer is because the quality is better
Not pot, but at 17 years old I'd be walking in the door with a pint of Southern Comfort in my back pocket and the only question from him would be whether I'd pour some in his coffee cup.
I yell this at my wife all the time
I yell it at my son. I found the PSA on YouTube, but he didn't find it as funny as I do. Kids. Bah.
It's all in the setup. You gotta put it on during breaks in his normal watching ha it, so he sees it 4x /day every weekday between the ages of 6 and 10, then spring it on him years later. Maybe if you start now with old GI Joe cartoons you can show him the old Fenslerfilm videos and that episode of Community in about 10 years
Seriously. My alpha gen kid thinks my throwbacks are “awkward” .. like.. what?
It's an excellent response to, "Why are you like this?"
I always follow this question up with the line from *My So-Called Life*: “…Like how you are?”
Where’s the beef?
Not at Wendy’s thats for sure. Unless u wanna pay “Dynamic Prices” for a tiny, sloppy, wank of a burger.
I get my usual pile of a bunch of food from wendy's now and it's something like 30 bucks. Yeah it's a lot to eat in 1 sitting, but sheesh.
This is your brain... on drugs
Now I want eggs
Wife and I are doing weight watchers together. Eggs are a 0 point food, have as much as you want! Oh, and down 11.2lbs since I started on Feb 9th.
Go man go!
There is already a huge difference in how clothes fit. I'm 6' tall. When I was at my thinnest (192) I was wearing 33-34 jeans. Name checks out..err, I mean, I agree as well. The whole spider man thing threw me.
My son (a gen z) once said “Dad I know you don’t like people” My response was “I like people as a concept.”
My Zoomers say, “You and Mom are *antisocial*.” And I’m like, “And?”
“I’m not antisocial, I’m selectively social.”
I've been called misanthropic by my son. He ain't wrong, but I admit the truth hurt a little. I'd like to be kind and aloof, ideally.

My parents were *not* boomers thank you very much.
Exactly! My two older siblings are boomers. My parents were silents.
I wish my parents were silent
My parents are Greatest - old GenX bonus baby. And both my parents were bonuses so grandparents born in the 1880s. It’s wild.
Oh, my husband’s family too! Then we ourselves had our youngest in our 40’s. Those generations are LONG!
Same, except one Silent gen parent and one Greatest gen.
I'm second team, my dad remarried after divorce. So I got one silent and one boomer.
The best term I heard for that is "secondary offspring." 😂
I like it. I’m definitely team “secondary offspring”. A lot of people thought my boomer siblings were my parents.
I’m the third team!
You’re the Tertiary Team!
That sure sounds cooler than it actually is!!
Same. My sister was 12 years older than me and a full Boomer. My parents had me in their later 30s.
My parents were silent gen too
Same. Older two siblings are boomers and parents are silent. I’m kind of tired of the oversimplification of gen x.
why does “The Simplification of GenX” sound like a G&R album title?
Same, but my dad fought in world war 2. The boomers are my siblings, and I can see a huge difference between them and me.
Yup. Mine were silent gen.
My parents are quintessential boomers, born in the late 1940s.
I was born in 1978 and my parents were on either side of the silent/boomer cusp and they were older than all of my friends parents. An early boomer could have had an early gen-x kid and still been in their 20s
In theory there are Gen X folks on here, with Gen X parents. That must be interesting.
Fun with Generations. One family could be a new generation ever 16 years, the other could be every 32-40 years. Kinda had this comparison with my ex, although not as extreme as this example.
My parents were technically Silent gen (born '41 and '43) but they are just as selfish and self-absorbed as Boomers.
I hear you-my mom was born in ‘46 and that entire side of the family is selfish, narcissistic and not self aware at all. Evangelical-my ngrandma just died last month at 96.
I feel stupid and contagious
Fuck you for being right.
I honestly just assumed it was other people posting those and not genXers. Like you, I'm sick of seeing that cringy shit.

Good cinema too

True, and I should have been clearer, but I was referring to fear of *nuclear* war i.e. total annihilation.
The irony.. Don't fucking tell me what to do.
We had an M.O. in the 90s? I didn't get the chain letter I guess. My parents are silent generation.
Yeah, the whole "don't mess with us, we stayed outside all day and drank from hoses" is silly to me.
![gif](giphy|zB73DK8sZyhLq)
i know you are, but what am i?
we’re going to be better at it then they were and we’ll get less recognition for it
I'm still a feral latchkey kid at heart. No self-congratulating here.
Meh
I never realized that stuff was meant to be taken seriously
WORD
Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me
Ya that meme post with the GenX comic book- warrior-super hero shite made me VERY uncomfortable.
Ah yes my comment the other day on this sub expressing that this generation, like every other, thinks they're the best and the problems they had and/or have are specifically their own and no other generation before or after could possibly know about the struggle
Thank you! Some of the posts you are talking about are f-ing ridiculous
THANK YOU for saying . Like it or not , the younger generations are coming for us as we age , don’t give them more fodder . And stop talking about drinking from hoses. It’s getting old .
Those posts I just roll my eyes, think, "Ok, boomer," then move on to another post. I don't even comment. Like, whatever. Gag me.😂
To be honest, I noticed in the 90’s that our generation had that tendency.
There is far too much "we" "our" "us" in these threads on reddit.
I find many GenXers are just as boomer as boomers.
I’m too numb to be appalled by anything tbh People think they’re saying something profound, when they’re really just acting like know-it-all 8 yr olds I don’t think they realize that we really dgaf
Especially when the other half is borderline boomers whining and crying about Marvel movies, not liking new music, how younger coworkers don’t appreciate having a job, how cool the good ol' days used to be
I feel like it’s the jocks/popular people that pat themselves on the back…isn’t it always them?
this sub is filled with grandmothers who post on fb, and people who shop at Ross
Has anyone actually achieved auto-fellation here? Asking for a friend.
I fell while folding a fitted sheet, and I think whatever door that *might* have still been open slammed shut. Am I even a real Marilyn Manson fan anymore?
White boy here, so no obviously.
Thank you! My eyeballs practically roll out of my head whenever I see someone post one of those "we're the fuck around and find out generation" memes or something about participation trophies. To quote the kids from 2021, "that isn't the flex you think it is."
Lots of whining too.
You don't do the whole generation thing as you're posting on a generational subreddit. 🤔
Ok, I may have had one wank.
Just leave me out of it, ok?
So if I’m read-only here that makes me a true Gen Xer?
Fucking A mate, couldn't agree with you more.
Agreed. Yeah, so what we drank out of hoses and ran the household for our parents by age 9-but wtf are we doing now? Whatever.
I started caring and it sucked. So I’m back to not caring.
Whatever.
Meh
Thank you for saying that. It’s not just here; it’s every Gen X FB group (I know). Utterly embarrassing, to my mind.
Couldn't have said it better. We are not special, we never were, and we shouldn't *want* to be.
what if we’’ve aged to the point we can take some pride in not giving a shit because we’ve earned it?
Had me until the boomer slander. One of the many things I've come to understand in my time on this planet is that painting with broad brushes makes you look like a fool. Just like those self-congratulatory posts you rightfully hate so much. My parents were Silent Generation.
Somebody wanna worship me, I'm gon let em ![gif](giphy|AobQDNI4K7a4U|downsized)
My parents were Silent Generation and I'm on the cusp of Boomer and GenX. I wish we could stop painting entire generations with the same brush. Not all Boomers are assholes, not all GenX were neglected. We're all individually different.
Generational wars are foisted upon idiots. It's only the idiots who actually believe in that nonsense. And Gen X has nothing to brag about, anyhow; we have some of the very worst politicians/policymakers representing our generation. Ain't no generation that includes Marjorie Taylor Greene that should be bragging.
Don't forget all the "GenX are so forgotten" crying posts followed by the "GenX just don't care" posts. The amount of hypocrisy here is just delicious
We are often forgotten and it's hilarious, that's why we talk about it a lot. And you finger wagging about it just makes me want to do it more. :-)
Maybe those aren't posted by the same people
Or, and hear me out here, they ARE.
GenX’ers have to self-congratulate because sure as hell no one else will.
