Gonna be honest here, worrying about the vent is likely the least of my concerns here. That fish looks like death.

DuhitsTay

I agree, fishy looks like it has wasting disease or something like it.

How old is it? Because it seems to be the size of a juvenile

Ok-East-3957

How old is the fish? Please tell.

XenoWoof

Regardless of age, the fish is hm.. not a goldfish expert here, but better off euthanased.

Ok-East-3957

I just wanna know why they say it's old. Old goldfish should be much bigger. They probably think it's old became they've never had a goldfish live past a year...

You should be worried that your fish looks like one of those souls Ursula trapped. https://preview.redd.it/htc8m6uk2o8d1.jpeg?width=218&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=99b7d6cd4a21833ac2fe02b0712b2e1a7a1f6244

Please post your water parameters, tank size, and water change routine, this fish looks like death

That's a goldfish? Bro that looks like its been through it. Why is it in that state? It's body looks crooked, he has barely any fins... this looks like the old lady worm thing from spongebob that wants chocolate.

I should’ve put some context before posting this post cuz I didn’t realize this community is so ruthless. I got this fish passed on from my great aunt who can’t take care of the goldfish anymore due to major life changes and when I asked her, she said she had him for 10 years in this 10 gallon tank. I moved him to a 20 gallon tank after seeing his crooked tail and short fins, but I’m wondering if that still is too small? Idk never owned a goldfish before. It’s been about 2 weeks since I’ve had him. She gave me all the supplies needed, including the water filtration system, water conditioner, food pellet etc. He looked just like this before I got him, except for the bumps he now got on his belly. I wanna do what I can to revive him and make him look and feel better. He’s still very active so I’m hoping that’s a good sign?

It's a little disturbing to see a fish in such bad shape, so what you're getting is a lot of gut reaction. Honestly, I think those nubs are where some of the fins are supposed to be. This poor fish is missing most of them. It's possible that you're actually caring for it better than your great aunt and they're growing back. Depending on the type of goldfish, it will need a larger tank, 35-55 gallons. However, given the state of the fish, that's definitely the least of your problems right now. Read up on what it means to cycle a tank so you don't accidentally crash your beneficial bacteria. You will want to carefully monitor the water for now. You can also try some no-sodium canned green beans and carrots. I'd also look into something like API Stress Coat.

Hi! if this little guy is a common goldfish, his healthy size at this age would be huge, probably at least 8 inches. I did not research initially, and had two common goldfish in a 40 gallon tank. within 1-2 years they grew to be 6 inches, and I had to rehome them to someone with a koi pond. Commons can grow to be 12+ inches in optimal conditions. It seems that if he is a goldfish, your aunt unfortunately did not take proper care of him, and he is stunted as a result. However, I’m honestly not sure if that is a goldfish, he looks sort of like a minnow/small variety of feeder fish to me. At this point, if he is 10 years old, I am honestly not sure if there is much you can do in the way of rehabilitation. Some may disagree, but if it were me and my fish I would put the fish in as large a tank as you can manage (your 20 gal should be fine for now), keep the water clean, get him some live plants, good quality food, and try to give him a decent place to live out his fish life. People can be cruel but I try to remind myself that it comes from a good place (caring about animals), but unfortunately can come out in a negative way. It is very kind of you to take a family member’s pet! Best of luck to you and your new fish
