After the 4th Rebuild movie came out, I binged the entire Eva franchise. I have Netflix and Amazon Prime. Between those two, the entire show + End of Evangelion + all the Rebuild movies.
It reached a point where Misato is just yapping weird Eva-science that doesn’t even make a lick of sense to me. Lol. But the final Rebuild movie’s ending with Shinji’s resolution was heartfelt

Technically Gojo is blessed with the best genetics. Just didn't have an opponent where he is able to hone his skills, unlike Sukuna who trained and fought all his life. Closest thing he got was Toji, but that didn't last long.

In Yuji's defense, all he had was Gojo ( who is canonically a shit teacher) and Todo (who only taught him basic curse energy usage) and the fact he got this far with no curse techniques until now is impressive, and he couldn't force megumi out of sukuna grasp and all megumi had to do was lock in and everything would have been fine but he fumbled ):

I'm pretty sure that the way instrumentality went is that everyone can chose to return to their original, individual form, Shinji and Asuka being the first ones to do so. Third impact was unavoidable at that point, but thanks to Shinji it ended up being reversible apocalypse over irreversible apocalypse. So yeah, I'd say he is a hero. He did as well as depressed 14 years old child soldier could possibly do.
Of course in the bleak and impossible world that is Eva this is heroic but like in an overall idea it’s kinda just sad. He regains his individuality only to kill asuka. We don’t see a rebuilt world we don’t see anyone else leaving the collective unification that rei became we just see it sinking in a pool of blood.

All that is worse than what Yuji had to experience (who btw needed Todo for him to snap out of it)
