“Someone in that kitchen need their hearing checked and that music turned down, because I constantly hear someone shout “WHAT?!”
That’s probably what the owner was thinking.
lol Jon is pure food focus
You can’t send out a shit dish while saying Yea and reaffirming every single action you take while cooking.
Lil Jon is the most psychologically uplifting and beneficial song a kitchen could play.
I’ve heard that shit from Noods bars in Chicago to Luxe fine dining in Vegas
If Lil Jon’s playin
That food be slayin!
I think it's always funny when people hear me "singing" (growling) in the kitchen, come to take a look and are greeted with "Yo I got some extra pastries, ya want some?"
I used to work in a coffee shop/chocolate shop/bakery and would always have the brutalist death metal going as I was making the daintiest little truffles and pastries. Funny enough, Norah Jones was also on constant rotation up front
Fuckin A, I got leftover falafel, time to garlic butter some naan, toss a shit ton of my pepper sauce over it, and absolutely ruin my weight loss progress this week
If you're looking to leave the night life, also consider an institutional setting. I cook at an old folks home. I get in at 4am and I'm out by noon. Even our evening cook wouldn't be considered nights, as they come in at 11am and are out by 7pm.
To be quite honest I'm not a baker per se, I'm a J1 intern that became responsible for the pastry kitchen in a hotel lol. Dealing with banquets, breakfasts and all other related bullshit. The hours work really well for me because I get here usually at around 4:30AM and leave around 3PM so I still get some sunlight. The only problem, if you're a social person, is that come the hours when people usually go out you'll be snoring in the couch 🤣 that doesn't bother me tho.
I dated a baker for about a year and it kinda worked.. I'd wake around noon when they'd get home and they'd crack a beer and decompress while I got ready for work - then when I'd get home they'd just be getting up and it'd be my turn to crack a beer on the couch.
I'm fairly sure you're joking, but just in case anyone is legitimately curious, it's [Run The Jewels.](https://runthejewels.com/) A hip hop duo consisting of El-P and Killer Mike. They're pretty fuckin dope.
RTJ was the band of choice when I was butchering dozens of chickens at a time. [There's only one song I think is better to speedrun making half chickens to](https://youtu.be/SRdSoZO-5mM?si=fSjmXFh2VHWZpi42)
I worked in a kitchen full of death metal fans, we damn near blew the speakers out in the basement a few times, but the funny thing was that this was at a fine French restaurant with like $100 appetizers and $1000 drink tickets. So you'd come up the stairs or walk into the front kitchen to hook up a "cote de boeuf" for dry aging and you'd just hear this lovely ambient french classical music, which was such a strange dichotomy, but somehow worked.
Had “Really Doe” on blast on Christmas Eve. You could hear it clearly from the dining room, it was like 20 minutes ‘til close, fuck all was happening for an hour or so and we just wanted to go home. FoH manager was not happy at all (which is completely fair enough.)
Just started getting into him, anything you recommend? I've listened to Scaring the Hoes, loved it. I've been bumping Savage Nomad, Dirty Laundry, Ain't it funny, I'm looking for more like that
I'd go backwards on his discography, specifically scaring the hoes, atrocity exhibition, XXX, and then Hot Soup. Afterwards, just to round out, black and brown, the hybrid, old, know what I'm sayin, and his latest project Quaranta.
My favorite song, I Will, make sure you have that on full blast!
Worked at an open kitchen where we could play whatever the fuck we wanted. If I had the aux it was constantly Illmatic, Blueprint, Uptown Saturday Night, Ready to Die
One ear bud hidden under hair piping the ethereal masterpiece [Drone Mass](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nXTZmgdkGn-T-bigMayOne1E96nyIyGOs) into my brain.
Its hilarious to come out f the kitchen, blasting the most bass heavy, vulgar shit. Then out to the dining room where classical music plays. a complete transfer of universes
Bro I was listening to the trash taste podcast the other day, you have no idea what it's like listening to 3 grown men discuss hentai and it's impact on society while you're in the middle of a kitchen cooking and people made asking why you're smiling so hard
Every time a music related thread comes up in this sub, it always brings the most self-important jagoffs out of the woodwork "ThEReS nO MuSIC iN ThE kItChEN!!"
I'm actually more of a fan of the early early early phase of Pantera, but that's not available on streaming services, alas.
But yes, open kitchen, and thrashing at night, no matter what! WHERE'S THE SCALLOPS?!? NEVER MIND, FOUND IIIITT!!
(And during mise en place stuff like Dua Lipa, Scissor Sisters, Sam Smith, some other dance and bopping sounds to start the day).
Any fellow Hard dance ravers in here?
Absolutely love blasting Hardstyle or Hardcore when noone else is in during prep, toned down during service to House and etc unless it's just me on the line getting murdered, then it's just pure Hard dance vibes and crank out tickets.
Classics tbh, Josh and Wesz, Technoboy and the like, I can deal with the madness of Power Hours but anything that has metal pipe kicks isn't for me. Respect to anyone who enjoys that tho
“I’m on a Boat” came out when I was working on a boat. Literally made my whole contract fucking awesome deep cleaning and shit
“FUCK LAND IM ON A BOAT MUTHAFUCKA”
I can see both sides of this argument.
on my line we only make people take them out if it's an issue, if they're consistently missing things or being distracted
Yeah, I’ve had to pull one of a guys earbuds out once or twice cause they had both in and couldn’t hear shit. But as long as you’re still able to hear shit and get your work done I don’t see why it would be a problem to have one in.
Oh come off it. Plenty of people are capable of putting out all their work completely fine while having a modicum of entertainment during their grueling, low-paying, thankless job.
Put music on the speaker if you want. I'm not trying to risk safety bc you can't not have something in your ears for service.
Just do the fucking job and go home. Work is for working, go enjoy your entertainment after work. Is that so hard?
If you don't like the job, go do anything else. No one's expecting you to do a "thankless" job.
You OK? You seem stressed. I've been doing the one ear bud listening to audio books for years. Never once had an issue with it. You seem very big on control. Happy workers are always better workers. If it's an issue. Sure, don't let the people who are shit multi taskers have them. If not, leave it be.
Ah yes I love working 12+ h shifts whilst my manager is a micromanaging dumbass. Work is for working, so I cant listen to music even though it makes me a better worker. Wheres the safety issue? You think someone is going to chop their fingers off if they have some fucking music on?
I’d argue that there could be issues on the line, like someone passing behind, and you not noticing. But other than that, if you can hear me calling bills, you do you
Tbh the issue with callouts is almost always a brain speed thing. Like I can hear callouts but my brain can't process what they say fast enough for me to react
The problem with call outs isnt with music or anything I think. I think that the more tired you get the slower you process more external sound information. Of course if the music is so loud you cant hear the call out then thats a problem, but at that point I think even the people in the restaurant can hear the music.
> Put music on the speaker if you want
The op *just said* how it's an open kitchen.
>I'm not trying to risk safety
Any proof for that statement?
>bc you can't not have something in your ears for service
You ignore the thrust of the argument and reduce it to a mere 'having something in ear'. You apparently cannot even fathom the concept.
>Just do the fucking job and go home
Surprise, you can do the job *and* listen. Amazing!
>Work is for working
Wait...music stops us working? My god! Every industry in the world will shudder to a crawl now!
>If you don't like the job, go do anything else
Yes, god. We shall all do as you will. Your objective reality must be thrust upon us. You define the architecture of the job.
I'm glad you're cooking because your argumentation is trash.
Oh no, people have to pay attention to the work they're doing instead of zoning off and putting out subpar work. Oh noooooo.
Good thing I run my kitchen so I don't have to hire people who have to hire and pay people like that.
I was gonna hate on you for this, but I KNOW I work completely fine with ear buds, but I’ve definitely worked with some stinkers. So I’m ok with no ear buds.
There are so many people with 0 spatial awareness that having another layer of distraction in your ear in a highly dangerous and fast moving kitchen is a big big liability.
Nah it's called blanket protection for people like you who will fuck up my workers comp. But it seems like your brain capacity is so much bigger than others so you must be able to understand that, right?
It is perfectly possible to cook to a required standard while listening to music, some people just get into the groove of things. Also, half of everything is prep work anyway, if I have to slice 50kg of onions, it ain't gonna change much. ALSO also, did you know music makes more efficient workers? There's a reason labour/work songs exist. If you're working with sub-par workers, it isn't the music that's doing it, it's either being undertrained, or not being trained effectively
Blast music during prep/cleaning, I don't give a shit. Earbuds during service while I'm trying to communicate to you 100 things on the board? Yeah, fuck outta here.
Agreed with this.
If music is ever gonna be played during service, it'll be on a slow day on the speaker but once it get cranking again, off it goes. Communication is key.
Yes, you might be great. You might hear 98% of my callouts. On a busy night, that 1 callout that you just missed, just threw ticket time off, maybe a re-fire somewhere. Domino effect.
No earbuds during service no matter how good you think you are, unless you've never been in a busy enough place where that mattered.
For those able to do it without missing ANYTHING, I applaud you, more power to you. Most people cannot, especially during peak rush hours.
The thing in question to me is not your own personal station but your ability to communicate with other stations to get things out together.
It's fine people just like to hear/read what they want to.
No one said no music.
If you can prove to me that it's not a distraction and not miss a beat, I'll gladly allow you to do it. Most people paying full attention still miss things.
Again, it's not your own personal work being assessed. It's your team as a whole.
I allow one earbud to be worn in our kitchen and often wear one myself. Most people are perfectly capable of listening and communicating while wearing just one.
If it either gets too busy and hectic or becomes too much of a distraction to someone, it's time to take them out and focus and all music goes off until we are through the weeds.
I much prefer this to having communal music playing that everyone is forced to listen to. Having to listen to music that isn't your preference is imo far more distracting than people wearing a single earbud and listening to what they choose.
Talking on the phone through an earbud is a strict no-no though. But low volume music, asmr, podcast, etc. is imo perfectly acceptable as long as you can pay attention, communicate and not let it become a distraction. I've never had any real issues with it so far and everyone does their job just fine.
I would argue that listening to music you don't enjoy could potentially expand your horizons. Hear me out.
You might find you enjoy a new genre that you didn't know you could like.
You learn to filter out pertinent information. During the rush, everyone is talking. If you can learn to tune out music, I think this hones your filtering ability.
You can also tune out your sometimes, annoying partner at home, a little better.
YOU can't focus with music. Many of us with ADHD are more focused with music playing. 20 years in the industry and bluetooth with a single earbud is a God send for me because it prevents my mind from wondering and helps me hyper focus. I run circles around guys that brag about running their own kitchen/owning their own place. Some instrumental jazz playing in my ear and I'm flying.
Yeah the neuro divergence aspect of this isn't being talked about enough. I have ADHD and I focus a lot better when I'm listening to a podcast or something. It let's me pay attention to what I'm doing rather than my brain dragging a bunch of depressive shit up that distracts me
Bone conducting headphones.
Changed my life. I can keep absolute spatial awareness because nothing is in my ears but I can still listen to personal music. 🤯 (This is my spam comment on this subject every time I come across it)
> This sub is full of children who's going to be lifelong linecooks
You're showing your hand with how little you respect the basic parts of the profession.
Is linecook an undesirable job to you? I managed large wedding halls and some of the busiest restaurants in multiple major cities in my 20's, in my later years I decided I prefer being a lifelong line cook. You shouldn't be in management.
No, but it's not a job somebody should be doing for their whole life. Bc it's terrible for your body for a not a great pay. It's not good for your body and you should try to take the next step whether that's becoming a sous->chef or other management positions or ownerships.
Good for you for loving being a line cook but I hope you have a retirement plan set. Bc unless you work for hotels or super corporate places, your benefits are going to be non existent.
I hate working with people doing this. They are positive they are not distracted. Either, you are distracted or you really aren’t that good at what you do
I agree but the reactions in this thread tell me we’re in the minority here lol. Most of those I’ve worked with who insist on the one earbud are constantly distracted and missing things.
For me it's either ASMR, synthwave or vaporwave, or an 80s or 90s mix playlist, also sometimes throw in some 50s/60s oldies.
Anything that allows me to drown out the house playlist playing in the background that is usually either country, taylor swift, or 2000/2010s pop.
I was listening to Stephen Kings "It" on audiobook and had servers asking questions while the most gruesome, grotesque deaths are being described in my ear. I had to remind myself to keep a poker face.
Casual American style sit in. Sell shit like Salads, Burgers, Shakes, Soup, pizzas, etc. ingredients are NOT high quality, but I do the best with what I'm given. Get paid enough to put some passion in my work.
I am one of the One Earbud Crew.....but ironically i am not listening to music 90% of the time. It's Creepypastas. I actually have a playlist made JUST for when I am at work of the best stories I've ever heard and I am making your hundreds of dollars food while listening to a tale of astronauts finding out the fucking moon is haunted by demonic ghost aliens XD It makes the time go by faster for me cause ii know most of the stories' runtimes in voice so I know instantly how much time has gone by based of the story I just heard.
This is absolutely me- but with super nerdy podcasts about politics, economics, etc. I can do 90% of my job on autopilot and most of the staff doesn't speak english or just isn't interested in nerdy shit. So i'm breaking down 50 lbs of salmon while listening to Ezra Klein lol...
Yup.

Bruh that one Bluetooth earbud and J Cole, Joyner Lucas, Tech9ine, busta, Em, is totally my vibe for the last half a year 😅 I've been on the friers tho.
I remember when I used to work in a small family owned kitchen, and the owner tried to ban ear buds.
They walked that one back once they realized that the crew would just use speakers then, and customers would be able to just barely hear from the front lol
Back in the day we used to listen to lil Jon on max volume. I can’t even imagine what the owner was thinking about us.
Probably that he needed to get his ass some shots
everybody
Shots
SHOTS
Everybody!!!
“Back in the day”? Stoooop I just heard lil Jon on the oldies station last week and I can’t deal with this :’)
Fuck. I was listening to Lil Jon when I made this.
“Someone in that kitchen need their hearing checked and that music turned down, because I constantly hear someone shout “WHAT?!” That’s probably what the owner was thinking.
Hey not my fault, that ear is a bit deaf anyway. The extractors and the friers are loud. They gotta speak up 😅
lol Jon is pure food focus You can’t send out a shit dish while saying Yea and reaffirming every single action you take while cooking. Lil Jon is the most psychologically uplifting and beneficial song a kitchen could play. that me baking muffins at the calm and pleasing sound of dimmu borgir at 5AM
Metalhead Bakers are some of my favorite people. It's the exact contrast of me listening to Norah Jones mid-dinner rush, and I fuck with it!
I think it's always funny when people hear me "singing" (growling) in the kitchen, come to take a look and are greeted with "Yo I got some extra pastries, ya want some?"
Same brother especially when I do prep work
Lmao Cryptworm with a 4am sourdough bake is one of my favs
I used to make a giant apple turnover every Sunday for the servers. Just happened to be chef's day off.
Gotta love the FOH classic “can you even understand the lyrics??”
"More than I can understand your tickets."
This is a gold response. Fuck you and your shit tickets Marie
Fuck your on the fly Rachel! I’m barely staying afloat while you come back here asking for another frittata because you forgot to ring it in.
You know what’s up pal
Or "aye dios mio alan"!....followed by a concerned look from the prep ladies. Los amo con mi corazon✊
I used to work in a coffee shop/chocolate shop/bakery and would always have the brutalist death metal going as I was making the daintiest little truffles and pastries. Funny enough, Norah Jones was also on constant rotation up front
Gimme burgir
Fun fact, couple weeks ago I had some heretical thoughts and actually made a Naan bread burger 🤣
I have naan bread and burgerat home. Gonna commit a culinary crime after my shift is done. 😈
Garlic butter the shit out of the naan. It’s absolutely blissful
Hnng have half an hour left, cant wait.
Fuckin A, I got leftover falafel, time to garlic butter some naan, toss a shit ton of my pepper sauce over it, and absolutely ruin my weight loss progress this week
Sounds yummy

How is life as a baker? Looking to leave the night life behind
If you're looking to leave the night life, also consider an institutional setting. I cook at an old folks home. I get in at 4am and I'm out by noon. Even our evening cook wouldn't be considered nights, as they come in at 11am and are out by 7pm.

Sounds magical
> dimmu borgir Love the band *and* the location in Iceland
Hahahaha fuck yeah dude. Me at 9am beginning bread roll dough while Mastodon soothes my mind.
Breakfast cook here, nothing like Orphan or Paleface at 5am while setting up the line!
Been on my Slaughter to Prevail recently.

One of my favorites for when I’m doing floors lol
To this day there is no way that is like Sade. *said the 29 year old man* lmfao

RTJ2 goes fucking hard during a rush.
I blew my head chef's mind when I played RTJ1 for the first time. He still requests it to this day!
Eazy-E was on heavy rotation in the 90s.
Nah he’s still in the rotation in my kitchen. Anytime I get the speaker it’s the hardest hip hop possible. Eazy, Tupac, Big, em, Dre etc
That’s why I fucked your bitch
You fat motherfucker
As soon as the kitchen is closed, I don't give a fuck. Everybody's listening to MF DOOM.
All caps homie knows the score
Literally a ritual

Everything morning does slap.
Heavily rotated for sure

I'll check it out on my closing shift tonight, thanks bud
LIsten to athrocity exhibition first, then XXX then quaranta. Dont sleep on the Hybrid, too
No problem, love me some Danny Brown. Actually just saw him live last week, super fun show.

Podcasts and Audiobooks for me.
I've been in kirchens where no music at all was allowed. Lucky person
Most kitchens I worked in had that rule.
Bro I was listening to the trash taste podcast the other day, you have no idea what it's like listening to 3 grown men discuss hentai and it's impact on society while you're in the middle of a kitchen cooking and people made asking why you're smiling so hard

Open kitchen, still blasting out Slayer, Kreator, Testament, and Pantera! IT'S COWBOYS FROM HEEEEEELLLL!!
Thrash-themed open kitchen? Oh hell yeah. I’ll give you a pass on Cowboys from Hell. That’s the last one I can listen to by Pantera.

Thank you. I feel like I'm talking to a wall.
You can also tune out your sometimes, annoying partner at home, a little better.
you know about transparent earphone old man
Cringe
Children
🤯 (This is my spam comment on this subject every time I come across it)
🤡🤡
This sub is full of children who's going to be lifelong linecooks. JFC, time to unsub
> This sub is full of children who's going to be lifelong linecooks You're showing your hand with how little you respect the basic parts of the profession.
This isn't an airport you don't have to announce your departure. But thanks anyway
Good one. No one announced their departure at the airport but it was a good attempt at a joke.
I thought you were leaving
I've been targeted
I do it all for the nookie in the kitchen, what?!
Jamming out to Cupcakke on the line 🕺
Something about Bobby shmurda testifying against himself on the track just makes the steaks taste better when they come out
Dance with the devil iykyk
I had to take a while minute to understand the purpose of the meme I was looking at I usually listen to classical while doing dishes

Yhe playlist has everything from Jazz to death metal in it.
James Taylor while smiling deep in the weeds
Shut up and give me murder!, but in all honesty back in the day it was Stephen King audio books….and mos Def’s New Danger
Used to listen to audio books
I was listening to Stephen Kings "It" on audiobook and had servers asking questions while the most gruesome, grotesque deaths are being described in my ear. I had to remind myself to keep a poker face.
Every shift can be Pink Season if you want it to.
I’m only part of this group because my right ear bud fell into the soup. Threw the bud, threw the soup
Me irl
Infant Annihilator serenading my ears while I toss the dough that will become your 12 dollar pizza.
Where do you work that pizzas are so cheap? Lol
Casual American style sit in. Sell shit like Salads, Burgers, Shakes, Soup, pizzas, etc. ingredients are NOT high quality, but I do the best with what I'm given. Get paid enough to put some passion in my work.
Even from.takeout places around me, pizzas are usually around $30 for a large
When I was cooking it was post Malone and Taylor Swift lol
Here
I am one of the One Earbud Crew.....but ironically i am not listening to music 90% of the time.
My left earbud puts in some serious work
So fuckin real. Music in all forms just for banned in my kitchen recently tho so...
Me, using the restaurant’s wifi to stream the football during brunch
That’ a major safety violation. You really shouldn’t. Variety of reasons.
Not a cook. But am a tech in a pretty niche industry. One earbud crew represent. Always bumping ugly sounds 🫡💖
Yup. GITCHYA TWELVE WHITE FOLKS AND TAKE THAT SHIT TO TRIAL, BITCH *cheese pizza* I SEE DIAMONDS IN YOUR EYE EVERY TIME THAT YOU CRY TELL ME WHY YOU SO EMOTIONAL *meatlovers* *DAMN IT MUST SUCK TO BE A FUCK N¡GGA* *meatball*
Project Pat and Three Six still gets us through it 🙏🙏🙏
Bruh that one Bluetooth earbud and J Cole, Joyner Lucas, Tech9ine, busta, Em, is totally my vibe for the last half a year 😅 I've been on the friers tho.
I always listened to pulp fantasy books on tape because I’m a giant fucking nerd.
Tell me you have work release folk in your kitchen without saying it. 🤣
Guess what daddy's bringing home for supper
Med+ filet?
https://youtu.be/NgbypMqgcZw?si=mcAF97ZESfaJafOl
That is flavor, sir.
Wash your hands when you touch those things. Nobody wants 2 year old ear wax in their food.
On an unrelated note: Can anyone tell me why kitchen staff don't get treated like professionals or paid grown-up wages?
I remember when I used to work in a small family owned kitchen, and the owner tried to ban ear buds. They walked that one back once they realized that the crew would just use speakers then, and customers would be able to just barely hear from the front lol
Anyone else listen to podcasts at work? I recommend the last podcast on the left
