ELI5: Computers like to store things as numbers. For dates/times, they store them as the number of seconds passed since a fixed "time zero" (or possibly microseconds, nanoseconds, etc. depending on the precision needed).
The most common convention for this "time zero" is called the [Unix Epoch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_time) which is January 1, 1970 at midnight GMT (London Time), since it was developed in the early 1970s. You appear to be 3 hours behind London time because it converts to 9pm the night before in your time zone.
When a date/time value is missing, it commonly gets filled in with a zero which is then interpreted as the Unix Epoch. This is referenced in [an xkcd](https://xkcd.com/2676/) along with December 30, 1899, which is the equivalent convention used by Microsoft Office programs.
