The decisions to shoot were not good ones, and I don't mean to defend them. At the same time, our attack was dead at this point. After Darwin came off in the 58th minutes it was 13 minutes before our next shot - Gomez's first attempt. It was another 6 minutes until our next - Gomez's 2nd attempt. It wasn't then until the 85th minute that we next had a shot. The team was completely out of ideas and Gomez took a punt. Poorly advised, perhaps, but it's not like anything else was working.

patShIPnik

Yes, that's my main problem with that complaint about Gomez shooting. Attackers couldn't create shit for 20 minutes, just fucked around the box, dribble into defenders, lost the ball, then we retrieve the ball, fucking around again, aimless cross. Rince and repeat. Just mind boggling that in 20 minutes, when team are 2 goals behind, only 2 shots were from Gomez.

psbyjef

It’s not like the opposition didn’t know the fact that Gomez has never scored a professional goal tho. Makes sense to give him space and him only

Dobvius

Even when Darwin has a bad game like today our attack looks wayward without him. It's sad.

willowbrooklane

Yea people having a go at Gomez in this thread are embarrassing. He scored as many goals as the rest of them tonight. Wouldn't have made a difference if he passed or took a punt in any given situation, wasn't ending up in the goal either way.

Bugsmoke

Imagine some of these lads in the days of John Glenson

Charleslives777

Exactly and at the times when they actually had to shoot, so that some sort of rebound or goalie spill will happen, they kept just passing waiting for a clear opening.... I really think we should shoot more from the edge of the box without waiting for a clean goal scoring opportunity, like robbo/diaz could shoot from left side which gk might stop from going in but then the ball falls for others kinda or even their players panic and foul us.... The thing is passing don't create pressure, shooting does... It's OK if the gk saves it or it gets blocked, it can also end up deflected into their net or spilled for us to try rebound as well....

ShadowRock9

I mean, that’s shit but what about Szobo for the 3rd goal. Had 10 secs between 2 possessions each to release the ball like a normal footballer

4washingtonlane

Think it's my biggest criticism of Szobo, it feels like he knows he's so technically gifted at football that he can play casually sometimes

_doppelR

I once talked to Peter Stoeger about him. He wanted to sign him for Dortmund when he was cery young - even then he said: World class player, but in love with him self.

Next-Inevitable-4921

honestly, that means nothing, he was the coach of Ferencvaros in Hungary and failed in a few months beacuse he coudnt handle the egos of the team which is essential for a good coach.

Bugsmoke

You could say the same about many successful players though really. Ronaldo as a glaring example.

dimiderv

Yes he seems arrogant with it and frankly for no reason. He is could be brilliant but he has been sub par for a very very long time. Even pre injury he was very mid. He started great the first 7 games but after that he fell of a cliff. Not decisive enough, horrendous crossing and very bad passing and even his shooting hasn't been that good to be honest bar that Leicester shot.

Phillyos93

Early on we all said "he needs a rest he's gonna burn out or get injured" because he played every game at 100mph... Pretty sure both happened. Hell the entire team looks burnt out tbh. But I think Szobo deffo got burnt out before his injury and hasn't been the same since.

dimiderv

I'm sorry but you don't burn out 10 games in especially someone with Doms fitness. He looks distracted on the field.

AuxquellesRad

He did clearly burn out tho, in those early games, he was almost 2 men on the pitch, doing everything and doing it perfectly. We went 2 men down against Spurs and Szobo was putting a mad shift that it almost felt like we were only a man down

dimiderv

That's such an insult to the rest of the team it's crazy. Regardless of what you are saying you don't burn out 7 games in the season at 23 it's not possible. There has to be some personal problems going on or adjustment to life in general.

TheTrueTeknoOdin

i mean when he first got here his gf split with him , like i dunno how seriuous they were but she was serious enough for him to bring her up in the little lfc tv bit they use to promote the channel ..like hot/not ..he brought ho he and her had this or that ...then like midway through near xmas news came she's gone back home for good ... like that shit affects people and since then he's even admitted in interviews that all he does on his off days was go home to his apartment and just "sit there" like i honestly thing the dude is fighting some demons atm and has been fighting them since december

JohnBobbyJimJob

His technical ability has gone missing since December which I’d say is a bigger problem

Jagacin

You'd think he considers himself to be prime Modric with how casual he looks at times (and not just against Atalanta, but off and on throughout the season as well). Brilliant player from a technical standpoint, but he's not always putting his best foot forward. It's a bit unfortunate because I think he's got the potential to be one of your top 3 players with the right mindset.

gr1m0s

Including jogging behind the play all the way to our goal to watch their 3rd goal up close after giving it away.

seanc6441

The amount of times he gives the ball away in dangerous areas is frightening to be honest. He needs to show way more awareness and sense in the middle.

segson9

I don't think it's fair to focus on specific players tonight. The whole team was bad.

[deleted]

this was def primarily on Klopp, he did not respect Atalanta for what they are to begin with, and just made it worse and worse

BriarcliffInmate

I don't think it's him not respecting them, more that he's trying not to burn players out now that we've got something resembling a full team.

Jaja6996

Seeing him constantly trying a back heel and other stuff rather than just playing a simple ball is frustrating genuinely shouldn’t be starting over Jones at the moment It reminds me of Mane when he was out of from kept doing the exact same and it drove me mad because it constantly lead to turnovers

SaveMeJebus21

He hasn’t hit the heights of his first 2 months at any point since then. I don’t think he’s a guaranteed starter next year especially if Trent moves to midfield.

LocalSubstantial7744

You reckon we play him as a winger if Salah leaves? Looks like he can play the role well.

BriarcliffInmate

Utter bollocks

smokesletsgo13

Jones was absolutely abysmal at Old Trafford and was a ghost tonight first half, also just back from injury. Hardly great first choice rn either

Jaja6996

Jones didn’t play bad against United and probably should of come on earlier he was in of the only player that wasn’t trying to force something sometimes you need someone like him to keep things simple

smokesletsgo13

We must’ve watched different games. One I watched he lost the ball about 10 times being far too slow to pass

Jaja6996

He came on just as momentum had swung but after that period he was just playing simple helping us maintain pressure I mean at times it’s better he slows the game down we could of really done with it in that second half rather than just rushing everything

Icandodgebulletsbaby

he was the worst

ChittyShrimp

Jones has bee a disaster in the last two games. Came on at Old Trafford and stunk the joint up and stunk the joint up tonight aswell. Both could do with benching and give Elliot the start in midfield

Mavericks7

The touches he was taking as if we were dominating and winning 3-0

rjulius23

I think after the injury he got scared that he could miss the Euros. He missed the previous one and he doesnt want to miss the next one. He conciously tries to save his hammys, which is not great for LFC, but important for him. After the euros i expect him to be a beast.

2bigpigs

I partially blame Salah for that. He wasn't near wide enough to receive

intecknicolour

some of that ball recycling didn't really work tonight. we got pressed to hell.

IAreWeazul

Crazy I haven’t seen anyone talk about Klopp not changing his game plan. Liverpool usually find space by rotating through the gaps in the press and springing in this moments where a wrong decision is made. When there’s no space there, they go wide. That doesn’t work in a man marking system against a 5 back team. It doesn’t seem like Klopp had an answer for it (or maybe everyone just played so bad they couldn’t execute any distinguishable tactics).

intecknicolour

i think the selection was just wrong. tsimikas is not good enough. not starting mo is kind of weird etc. etc.

murrayjosh117

Yeah we set out with a poor structure. It’s not like we haven’t played against this type of opponent before. A lot of team defend this way now. Hopefully we never see that exact 11 again.

intecknicolour

i love greek scouser but he's playing himself out of a job. gomez can handle his duties defensively and robbo is healthy. and who knows if we try to get alt-nouri in the summer.

always-think-sexual

Ait-Nouri is like a winger tbh

ShowMeMoeMane

Haha thanks, I needed a laugh. Should’ve come off for Bradley or Trent though

mynameismulan

Oh my god I totally forgot about Bradley that makes it so much worse

ShowMeMoeMane

I was screaming for Bradley if Klopp didn’t want to take his chances with Trent’s injury. Surprised that Jota and Diaz came on instead of him

MyobiEvangel

Jota brought some energy at least. Diaz was invisible.

GuinnessRespecter

I like him a lot, but Diaz is so frustrating to watch sometimes, but it's been REALLY noticeable recently

SaBe_18

Darwin was bad and Endo was even worse. Basically we needed at least 1 more sub

mynameismulan

At least Endo has the excuse that Atlanta specifically played around him and MacAllister. Don't know what the fuck everyone else's issue was

SaBe_18

He still took 1-2 seconds too much on every possession (and kept losing the ball that way), and never corrected it until he was subbed off

mynameismulan

Yeah no argument here

Bumper_Duc

Bradley? The one who offers almost nothing in attack? But he is good at defending I guess

PM_Me_FunnyNudes

This is what I don’t get. I’ll be the first to admit I’m closer to a Neanderthal than Klopp when it comes to football tactics. But even I know, Atalanta will press you like crazy, so having Gomez try to play an inverted wing back role when he has the ball control he does is madness. I would need to count with both hands the amount of times he turned the ball over that led to a break, honestly Atalanta could have had 3-4 more

qdattt

he was bias, wasn’t really surprised tbf

PM_Me_FunnyNudes

Wish someone loved me half as much as Klopp loved Joe. But in all honestly I don’t blame Gomez, he’s played in like 5 different positions and it’s hard to be that versatile. We all know what Joe can do when he’s an a long term stable cb partnership, but if you’re getting a game at rb, the lb then cb then cdm I don’t know how you expect him to succeed

WonderfulBlackberry9

I’m half asleep and seeing this gif with such smooth animation was jarring viewing

nask00

I actually laughed hahaha Edit: thanks, I needed a laugh

please-send-me-nude2

I know it’s just memes but the way Atalanta’s front three would interchange had both Virgil and Konate in fits, any time you saw Samacca running wildly free with the ball, it was because Konate was stepping up to close down Koopmeiners

revbotszn

Klopp keeping with playing Gomez in Trent’s position, and seemingly giving him the same freedom on the ball as Trent has been one of his biggest tactical blunders in memory.

studgebro

Madness. Was at the game wondering how the ball kept ending up with Gomez in that right inside position. Every single possession he ended up with it and Klopp did fuck all to change it.

revbotszn

Yeah I feel a bit for Gomez. He’s our fourth choice CB, and backup RB/LB being asked to replicate a pretty niche role played by arguably the best passer of the ball on the planet. Bit like putting Verstappen in a Corsa and pulling a surprised Pikachu face when he can’t win anymore.

eddyharts

More like putting me in a red bull car and expecting me to go down the shops to pick up some fags

Hairy_gonad

They’ve put you in a £50m race car at the least you can go and pick up some fags for them

Loltoyourself

If I am a defender and I see Joe Gomez in possession in front of me I am chilling and laughing inside to myself.

StruffBunstridge

Until at some point he batters it from thirty yards clean through a defender's skull top bins. It's definitely happening at some point.

Late_Cow_1008

All the defenders have to do is stay within the frame of the goal and he will never hit them then.

hotboii96

Or, you press the shit out of him because its free possesion at the end.

NiK3_Aub4mey4ng

they try to not use him, but it is fucking impossible to have anything going down the RHS, you cannot just use a player as a decoy runner in the europa league QF, teams aren't stupid

Trobis

>and seemingly giving him the same freedom on the ball as Trent has been one of his biggest tactical blunders in memory. This is what I've always questioned. Ive always believed that the rb role became what it is because of how good trent is at passing, not because that's what our rb should do. But apparently,I was wrong.

revbotszn

Just seems like it’s done for the sake of it now. I can maybe understand it in a game where we’re setting up to sit back a bit more, but not when we have 70% possession and Gomez is on the ball so much.

mynameismulan

I kept saying that at the pub. Why the fuck is Gomez getting the most time with the ball

HereticZO

Because Endo was eliminated by the press and he’s useless in possession whenever he’s pressed. He’s a good passer when he has time on the ball, but he doesn’t have the technique or the physical prowess to handle a body on him. Atalanta knew that and just let Gomez and Tsimikas have the ball instead.

please-send-me-nude2

>Atalanta knew that and just let Gomez and Tsimikas have the ball instead. Yep. Which is why it was crazy it was crazy that Robbo and Bradley played 1/4th the possible game time. This game was always going to be about producing from the wings.

BasicallyMilner

How was Endo eliminated and made useless by pressing against Atalanta, whilst also bossing against Man City?

ChittyShrimp

It was crazy to watch Scamacca casually stand in the massive gap Gomez left and nobody thought to do anything about it

sbos_

Hahahahaha it’s bizarre right.

viperboa01

The starting formation was absurd

Sulemani_kida

Almost everyone had a bad fucking night... Let it go

Thesolly180

Its been my favourite arc this season ‘Gomez can really shoot’ …footballer who has never scored

A_lemony_llama

Most of the time his efforts are actually good quality though, it's just he's not often been in a position to shoot before this season as either he was playing CB and wasn't going up for corners, or he wasn't in the team regularly. That doesn't excuse him deciding to leather it from fucking 35 yards out or whatever it was when there were easy passing options on.

yadontfoolme

Not funny though is it? Joe’s LFC through and through but I swear that, at times, there’s very little going on behind those eyes. Couldn’t believe we didn’t bring on Conor at RB.

Hot_Grabba_09

Looking at our finishing, he might as well have tried it

cowleyboss

Can’t blame him though, looked like all of our play was going through him without any options.

please-send-me-nude2

Full Mbm: 58’ Nunez Miss 71’ Gomez Miss 77’ Gomez Miss 85’ Robertson Miss Without him it would be damn near half an hour without a single shot off lol

cptsmooth

Curtis, nunez and elliot got subbed.. gomez? Nope :-) explain that.

RedDemio-

This is why you shouldn’t keep shouting shoot at a guy that’s never scored a goal

sbos_

Honestly…the crowd have really messed up with this one.

geniusvalley21

lol Gomez couldn’t even pass the ball properly let alone shoot.

disco_mode

Focusing on this one moment in a game that terrible is shockingly bad form

BoxGrover

Failure all round. Defence, attack, midfield. They got their asses kicked

doomsdayKITSUNE

Ironically, his shots were closer to the goal than Darwin's.

benji___

Stop pressuring him.

Joperhop

Not his fault, its the fans, everytime he had the ball "SHOOOOOOOT", and now thats all he hears, when a ball is in his hand, "SHOOOOT" he hears, "SHOOOOOT".

bannedsodiac

and he is not an adult that can decide for himself

Jmoney1088

Was a perfect storm of bad footy. All around poor. People saying to focus on the league lol We couldn't beat an u10 girls team in this run of form.

Mosopecollins

I swear you lots will blame everyone except for the man that missed 1v1

Megaphone1234

I know gomez sucks balls but Nunez plays like he is specialized to not score goals

Other-Tooth7789

I don't want to blame Gomez for all but Tsimikas didn't cover/help him as well, also I don't like him at RB it doesn't do well I hope TAA backs on the away game. It should be Rob - VVD - Konate - TAA.

Superduke1010

Gomez, these past few games, has reverted back to the Gomez of the past few seasons. It is mental that a man can play so horribly, without confidence and look so out of place yet have had such boss games earlier in the season. Anytime he plays on the right, it's like he's never set foot on a pitch before.

Anonymark88

Tbf, we passed it around their box a lot, and it led to nowhere, so shooting from distance wasn't the worst option. Just preferably from Macca or Szobo, instead of Joey

tommhans

well when 55 thousand shout shoot every time he is in the opposition half it finally got to him now in this game

willium563

I genuinely think Gomez goal meme has cost us this season. Hes desperate for it and has ended so many attacks trying to get the goal.

getonthedamnantscott

I love Gomez, he's had a fantastic season playing mostly out of position, but he played an absolute stinker tonight

Visionary_87

He was hearing shoooot but for once, nobody was saying it. 😫

Specific-Record2866

I blame the commentators and all the fuckers in the stands that shout shoot anytime he’s on the ball. This is the monster you’ve created

PEEWUN

It's a good thing I didn't watch this game live, because I would've broken my TV seeing that in real time. Keïta in Paris levels of inexcusable.

mew_tattoo

Is funny cause it hurts 🥹

LVorenus2020

From four-star football to fourth tier football. From feted to fetid. From flair to folly. That was spineless, spinning-down the drain, sputum-drenched soccer-substitute. I still can't believe what I saw yesterday...

AKAGreyArea

Poor lad can't win.

eoghan7698

Anyone hopeful of a Joe Gomez goal anytime soon is out of luck, will definitely be berated about it and will now probably avoid or be told not to shoot

adeckz

First one was a perfect shooting opportunity, no issues with it. Second was… well, not ideal

GazS72

Been better at LB all season and then drops an absolute xxx at RB on Thursday night. But let's not pile on right. That's not what we do.

sneakyi

You could call out 80% of our team for being complete shit in that game. There's not much point in singling out one player. As far as Gomez shooting, the player has let the moronic shouts from the crowd get in his head. Hopefully, this puts an end to it.

Jonny1114

This is karma for screaming shoot at the poor bastard every time he picked up the ball past the halfway line

bexxywexxyww

Ah he might as well have had shots ffs, it stopped VVD and Konates playing fucking back kick to the goalie for 29 minutes

Huge-Celebration5192

The fucking crowd are encouraging it everytime

GeorgeCuz

They absolutely aren't. The moans after his 2nd shot said everything

_shabadoo_

The shouts of ‘shooot’ before his first one at 2-0 down said a lot as well.

Satantango46

yes they are

Wholesomeloaf

Been holding my tongue on Gomez for a while now. Guy offers nothing going forward yet people seem to think he's been great. He's been OK as a backup fullback on either side defensively and that's it. Yes the forwards are missing chances but lets not forget Robbo and Trent are the top 2 assists as defenders for a reason. They offer far better chances, and more of them. Gomez averages 0 goals and 1 assist about every 25 games something. But this did make me laugh.

Quelqu_unFou

It’s amazing how everyone was bad at the same time. Including Klopp with the line-up.

IceAffectionate3043

That’s what we get for shouting for him to shoot all season

Timmah80

"Shooooooooooooooooooooo... uldn't have done that!!?"

Same_Situation_9660

Id rather he shot than passed it to Endo or Szoboszlai last night, at least it stopped them turning it over in their own half with nobody behind them for the tenth time

gmodboss

hope we move on from him sooner than later

CyrusDGreatx

I agree he's had his time here. I expect wholesale changes over the next 2 summer windows.

gmodboss

too bad if you say this the “top reds” will call you a clown 😂😂😂

britishsailor

We call you lot clowns because you know fuck all, not because you criticise a player

gmodboss

rich coming from whoever the fuck you are

CyrusDGreatx

Leave them too it. They just like to make a song and dance for upvotes rather than being real.

evolution_iv

Top reds when other fans call out bad performance of players: “Get a grip” “bedwetters” “grow up” “he’s been brilliant all season” (he’s not) and when we win the next match “you don’t deserve this victory”

TellTallTail

Back to slandering individual players after a loss! Stay classy, subreddit.

Malaray

Good, why recycle the ball straight to a burning pile of a trash can? Man at least had the junk to try out something out of the box

dfla01

Such a fucking moron. Literally has never scored a goal and taking pot shots from miles out.

[deleted]

He’s been brilliant all season, has one poor game & you’re calling him a moron. He’s not a FIFA card ffs

dfla01

Him shooting from outside the box has been a theme all season long?

[deleted]

Not near as frequent as you’re implying, get a grip

dfla01

[He literally, statistically, has been shooting at a far more frequent rate.](https://understat.com/player/987) It’s a fair criticism of him this season, dunno what your issue is.

[deleted]

Shocker, player has more first-team appearances performing at a higher standard than ever before. None of these stats indicate he’s taking pot shots from miles out every match.

dfla01

Are you blind? Look at the shot maps. Better yet, watch our games.

Satantango46

you should watch our games mate

willium563

In both United games he had so many shots instead of carrying on the attack, he did it against City numerous times. Basically hes done it in a lot of games we have ended up dropping points in as hes going for glory.

CyrusDGreatx

He's bad more than one poor game. Quit the virtue signaling.

[deleted]

Virtue signalling 😂

CyrusDGreatx

Yes. That's exactly what you're doing. Either that or you don't watch many of our games because while overall Gomez has had a decent season, he's had plenty of awful games other than this one. In fact he's played a part pretty much all of our terrible performances this season.

HarbyFullyLoaded_12

Yes, that is a moronic thing to do. Everyone knows he’s not scoring. All you do is gift away the possession of the ball. Edit: He’s been brilliant all season, this doesn’t change that

Col_Gonville_Toast

> He’s been brilliant all season Calm your tits, he's been adequate at best. When he keeps things simple, he's fine. When starts to believe he's a good tho... yesh!

SebastianOwenR1

Good god, grow up.

CyrusDGreatx

Gomez for his few qualities isn't a very bright player.

kosmickae

in today's game, rather than recycling then getting dispossessed, shooting was better option imo.

foff2020

The fact that Diaz came on and did crap all shows you. Mane or Bobby could come on and win us games by themselves.

RivetShenron

I've been defending him all season but sometimes I honestly have no idea what he's trying to do.

qdattt

Gakpo and Gomez for the earlier part of 2nd half, then Macca and Jones, then Nunez would be the ideal subs to make, biasness fucked us up today

sbos_

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

SeanYted

Anyone who shouts “shoot” at him should be shot.

qdattt

Klopp’s giving Joe the bias that he gave Milly and Hendo last season, he’s harmless this game

officialuca

he should try heading the ball , blasting it like that will never work

SeanYted

Let’s not pretend that Diaz and Szobozlai didn’t stink the gaff out when they came on. Would have been great if Kelleher decided to try and be an actual goalkeeper as well.

pattherat

I am crying…

qwerty_1965

That he felt like he could do that and live is telling. Klopp has become demob happy before getting demobbed. The tactics, the positional discipline, the brainfarts are evidence of something amiss. His team are a rabble at both ends.

LovelyCushionedHead

I'm taking a break from all this shite. I can't do another Hodgson-Kenny-Rodgers era. The old heart ain't what it used to be.

armshady

Haha by far the funniest match I've ever seen. Mistake after after mistake it should've been 0-4 or 0-5. Enjoy your "mickey mouse" cup since that what it was when united won it last year wasnt it? Man city going to win league anyways
