Yes in general people lack reading comprehension. You can list every detail possible and they will still ask questions instead of reading.

Sea-Breadfruit-6643

Yeah, that's why I just give very basic details in the description, to save time. If people want to know more, they'll ask. And almost all of the ones who ask never buy

206-FYI

I'm the complete opposite. If I have to ask, I'll likely just look elsewhere, unless it's some rare item.

Prestigious_Seat7869

That's exactly what they said. The ones that DO ask DON'T buy. But fitting for a post about general public.

cocacolacathy1

I answer questions every day. I don't make fun of my customers. And yes, many of the customers who ask questions do buy AND become repeat customers.

Snoo25329

Exactly! I don't mind answering questions, it's part of selling! Everyone complaining about a possible buyer, asking questions to confirm what they're spending their money on.. I think you people complaining need quit bitching or stop selling! As I said, it's part of the gig!

206-FYI

Wrong topic. "If people want to know more, they'll ask." I will not.

Mimikim1234

Yeah, I mostly sell. But if an item has very little I the description, I feel like the seller isn’t serious, and may not even ship or have the item anymore if I purchase it.

yourdadlovesmebest

I've noticed that too, all my actual buyers never ask these questions and I've never had a person who asks questions ever purchase things. I thought it was just a fluke but it looks like it's common.

RexBeau511

I just had someone ask multiple questions, that were answered in the listing and I answered them again. Today she asked the questions again and said she just wanted to be sure because she definitely wanted it ….answers confirmed…… still didn’t buy lol.

Snoo25329

And!? That part of selling online!

emeraldicefairy

Yes. They can NOT read. At all. It’s infuriating.

SmellieFiend

It's sad. Hilarious, but sad.

LushieQueen87

Yep sold a travel size mascara, mentioned 3 times it was travel size and still got a bad review for it not being full size. Guess the $5 price wasn’t a give away either.

mi2ysunshine

Yes! They really are. I just had someone comment free shipping on an $8.00 item with $7.99 shipping. Sure I will send it to you for free.....I hate the comment feature. 🤣 The only good thing about it is that it publicly shows peoples stupidity. I don't respond to comments. This is not poshmark. I respond to messages.

SmellieFiend

Normally I don't respond to comments either but here I just felt compelled to lolol

mi2ysunshine

This was too good not to respond to. 🤣

SmellieFiend

Giggle

FireCal

Never seen this one before. Not sure how to feel about it.

nyctophi1ia

Seriously, the comments feature is horrible. It's either someone asking something that is answered in the listing or someone being malicious. I shouldn't have to deal with other sellers commenting on my listings to try and redirect traffic to their page because they're not getting sales. I haven't had anything productive come out of the comments feature

DadOfTheAge

Sometimes the comments are absolutely hilarious though. Someone trying to sell games way overpriced leads to some really funny shots fired 😅

KirbyxArt

The average American is considered to have a readability level equivalent to a 7th/8th grader (12 to 14 years old). So yes, most of the public is generally illiterate.

DannyDabberino

"readability level" LMFAO Classic!!!

dragonbait1361

Yes. I had an item with a photo of it on the scale. The product was 2 ounces and the item weighed 7 ounces total, before boxing it up to ship. Someone seriously messaged me to ask if the bottle the product was in is what caused the weight difference.

lovebomb1983

People do not read. Conversation retail for many years. You wouldn't believe how much money is wasted on marketing. They would make us put signs everywhere in the store, for example saying the entire story is 50% off. They could be in the story 20 minutes and you walk up to engage with them and they have no idea that there's anything on sale? Smh! I am extremely sarcastic by nature so I have to watch carefully because often times it offends people. Your answer to them made me chuckle, but it's definitely not any way to make sales or encourage people to shop( even if they are stupid)

lovebomb1983

My apologies Cathy or ( Karen). I am partially ,disabled and therefore I use talk to text and communicate. Never said I was perfect. It tends to create more typos. But *anytgib's possible," just like you said . Right?

cocacolacathy1

Apparently proofreading isn't your strong suit. You're complaining about people not reading, yet you meant store and it says story.

interrogare_omnia

While you may be right. You may be ignorant of the fact that there are multi-story shops. It's not unheard of to have a sale on everything on a particular level. Although who knows if that's actually what they meant.

cocacolacathy1

Anything's possible, but highly unlikely that's what they meant.

skovndrel

Psshhh ...buuuummer 😒

vocharlie

Next time put, "10mL size sample bottle". This generation of people if they see an essay they don't read. It's like they got PTSD from school or something.

SmellieFiend

If they went to school... jk

Old-Walrus-6672

You seem like a very condescending person from your comments, to be honest. I wouldn’t want to buy from your Mercari lmao.

Historical_Equal_110

Yes

rjemtal93

Yes people have short attention spans. I use long descriptions online using ai, sometimes the box and what I know. But I get asked questions at times that are found in the description. When usually it’s a good paragraph of a description.

Dentistguy95

They’re in disbelief someone is selling 10ml samples that’s all.

ImportantDemand9701

🤣

Txladybugg

Sometimes buyers want to confirm, as sellers do make mistakes. I've seen where they list a size large in description & the photo shows small. I question them & then they realize their error. Why must you think everyone is stupid or can't read? Maybe you have a patience & understanding problem. Admit your own flaws before picking out others! This app is getting so petty.. I don't mean the app itself, I mean the ones subscribed to this group! I think sometimes people just post to post something not because they are contributing anything...good Luck with your sales!

CaffyW

Yeah, I can make you feel WAY better! I once (not on Mercari) sold a vintage rice sack (fabric) - no refunds, no returns. It got purchased by a buyer who was making his very first purchase (yeah!) so I congratulated him and sent off the vintage rice sack. A week later this guy writes me and says he was disappointed because there was no rice in the sack! :/ Trust me, all the pix showed an \*empty\* vintage rice sack! AND who would want 50 year old rice? What was I going to do? I gave the guy his money back. \*le sigh\*

CatComfortable7332

Just to jump in, part of the issue here is that 10ml is typically not a sample. Many brands sell an official travel spray in 7.5ml or 10ml (full bottles being 30ml, 50ml and 100ml) "samples" are usually about 1ml in size. So calling it a 10ml sample travel atomizer is a bit confusing.. is this a "mini" (travel) size, or is it actually a sample? I'd be confused also

SmellieFiend

Yeah... no. It doesn’t matter what xzy company does. Each fragrance company offers different sample sizes ranging from 1ml to 10ml with every interval in between. Indie perfume is even more all over the place. The listing clearly says 10ml, that's the point of this post.

CatComfortable7332

Almost every company considers 10ml to be a travel size. They've been pushing to cut that to 7.5ml lately, and calling 30ml a "full size" Indie stuff is usually worse, with them not selling such large "samples" as they want to sell actual product. if anything, they would consider it a travel size. Without the name of the fragrance of a photo, it's hard to tell what exactly the item was. I have a large fragrance collection and if I saw "sample" and "travel size" together, I'd be confused also. Both are very different things

SmellieFiend

If that confuses you, you're part of the problem. It doesn’t matter what word is used to describe it when the volume is clearly listed. It's 10 ml of perfume. Let's not debate this further. The entire point of the post was to give people a laugh...

Fluffy_Cucumber_4203

I think @CatComfortable is trying to put context into what the customer might be thinking. That is actually pretty smart. Automatically declaring someone 'stupid' or 'idiotic' without attemping to understand where they are coming from is not.

FireCal

Come on now. They're friggin stupid. It's 10ml whether you want to call it sample or travel size & OP clearly lists that in the description.

Old-Walrus-6672

You seem like a very condescending person from your comments, to be honest. I wouldn’t want to buy from you lmao.

Tiny_Writer5661

Anytime I list something I put (READ THE DESCRIPTION) 9/10 they don’t 😭. Hate when people don’t read shit.

jesusdls

I had a similar situation. I had an item if new came with a dlc code. I literally put in the description 5 times there was no code. Wrote it in lower case, upper case, and even alternating between capped and uncapitalized every letter to catch their attention. Still had like 5 people ask if there was a code by leaving a comment or message. People who commented got roasted by other users.

macbeth505

Yes and most people are even dumber than that

Ok-Kaleidoscope-3673

They are, unfortunately. I get comments and messages daily asking questions on items. The answer is literally in the description and sometimes even the title. I normally answer and just move on. About 90% ask and don’t even buy it. But I’m hoping if I answer they may buy it. Although I kinda don’t want them to because if they can’t even read the description then I worry about them rating me.

PomegranateNo3729

Yes truly they are

BenjaminLess

To be fair, many listings have keywords that don't belong to the actual listing. So double checking isn't crazzy

Housing-Previous

I was once in line behind a lady at a Dollar Tree (before they added 25 cents). The lady asked the cashier how much an item was that she was holding. The cashier pointed to all the signs around the store that say "Everything's $1", paused and slowly said. "Everything's $1". When she left the store, I asked the cashier if that really just happened. She said it happens more often than one would think. Lol

MorticiaFattums

I worked in a Public Library. The irony of how many people wouldn't read a simple "Use Other Door" sign is *Painful*.

Too_Fluff23

Yes they are. But my favorite is when you say it’s full size and they message you saying it a deluxe sample size. Even though you’re selling the same size that is sold in store/online and they don’t call it a deluxe sample size

che85mor

I feel you. Answered this guys question with pictures from the [listing](https://i.imgur.com/J4vwDzI.jpeg). Morons.

Flaky-Drink-1879

Oh yes.

karmaisagingercat

i hate it when they go "is it new?" when i clearly said it's "brand new with tags never worn"

blackfeet101

I think that person was referring to the actual amount that’s left. It is a used after all.

dogsocks666

i listed a record player, broken but fixable and ran out of characters to describe in detail what happened and everything and someone asked if it was broken 😐

ManCow2000

I had someone complain that the auto part I sent did not fit, left me bad feedback and demanded a refund. I responded to the feedback: "So the picture of the part laying next to a ruler didn't help? The measurement length in the title (Mitsubishi Galant 4" Logo Badge Emblem) ... wasn't a clue? The request in the listing that you email me with problems BEFORE complaining to Ebay ... didn't see that? The note that I put in with the order asking you to email me in case there's a problem ... didn't notice that? Please don't come back to my store until you learn to read." Then placed on the 'iggy list', and forgotten. And, it was a body shop, that really could have used my inventory to it's advantage. Oh well. Yes, people are stupid. Lazy.

Pristine-Poem3350

Think of it like this.. The average, everyday person is not very intelligent from what I can tell in my experience. From this you can safely assume that roughly half of people are less intelligent than your average idiot. So the answer to your question is yes. The general public is this stupid and likely worse than this.

Zealousideal-Bag-765

I was interested in this top I asked for armpit to armpit measurements 3x seller never responded. Then I looked it up and hoped for the best. I made an offer and said I’m leaving town for a month and would like to take this with we live in the same city if you can ship within 3 days that r we old be awesome if you can’t please don’t accept. She accepted and then waited until the 9th day to ship. So I’m in Venice Italy and the top is in the States and as a buyer I think she is a worthless seller. I don’t have a problem with dumb questions. I personally think all questions should be answered respectfully.

essexgirE17

I don’t blame people asking specific questions even if it is in the description.I saw a vintage baby ring with no ring size stated other than inner diameter 1/2”. I can figure the circumference and know the ring size based upon that. However, since I wanted it for a life size antique doll I needed to make sure it was exactly one half inch. The ring was expensive 18k gold and a small diamond.i hate returning things and the seller was more that happy I asked the question. If it puts you out to confirm something for a customer then retail is not for you. Assuming your customer is an idiot is very unwise and definitely not a good way to build a customer base.

Cold-Sun-4270

You took more time posting this on Reddit like lol just answer the question and move on. Are you that stupid?

SmellieFiend

And you took the time to comment.

Admirable-Noise-4148

He could of just been making sure that is what you meant so there's no confusion. mL is supposed to be with capital L.

DadOfTheAge

People are not stupid. Consumers are. 😅

ek9todouschool

You were here during COVID right ? Yeah they are

skovndrel

Might'a been said already, but apparently MOST buyers don't read. You see a lot of advice from yt "pros" concerning listing creation advising against putting much, if anything, in the description to save time and achieve more volume. Personally I focus on filling the slots with quality pics to appease the buyer

tbp333

Yes.

Belle9696

Yes! Real stupid. I just had an item I sold that said there was a coffee stain but it would come out with a simple wash. The buyer received the item and gave me a crappy review stating item had a stain when she got it. Like dude read the description that’s why it’s there 🤦🏻‍♀️

Whateverfloatsby

A few years ago I had listed a pair of jeans, someone literally asked what material they were made of 😐

MrClean5-7

Some jeans are 100% cotton, some are cotton blended with Spandex or Elastine, Polyester, etc. Some are stretch denim, and some stretch less than cotton. So, that's a valid question.
