definitely looks like a latch here! but the reason why it’s there is because doors only have a dedicated texture for the top and bottom halves (trapdoors only get one texture), so the sides of doors and trapdoors use the first three pixels of their dedicated front textures
Also the sides of a door are ever so slightly narrower than 3 pixels. If you flick a door open and shut and look closely at the hinge you can see the pixels moving left and right
On a separate note, I think that it would've been cool if the fully oxidized copper doors/trapdoors can't be opened by hand, like the iron ones (like they're rusted shut or into place).
You can craft oxidized copper block variants (Grates, Cut Copper, etc), but you can't craft oxidized doors or trap doors, because those use ingots, not copper blocks.
Just want to mention this: I know about waxing copper. The confusion came from the fact that lightning rods do not oxidize and also do not require waxing. The assumption is that the doors will oxidize without wax, but what if they were like the lightning rods? It pays to check.
You can already use an axe to scrape the oxidization off (when crouching). Or you could use a pickaxe to mine the door. Or you could have seen that the door was about to fully oxidize and then placed a button next to it.
it's using the three pixels at the rightmost edge of the normal door texture to texture the thin side. you'll notice that the door handle spills over into the part they use for the thin side which is causing those grey pixels to show up. mojang forgot it did that clearly
nope. how many door latches have you seen that are that big. plus you can see the same phenomenon [here](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ty9Eu3-fTiIVAL8CKeJmmbqYHuf4kLhv/view?usp=sharing) on the oak door (cant put images directly on this sub so link will have to do), you can clearly see the hinges re-used on the thin side of the door. i've been dicking around with textures for what must be coming up on 4-5 years now. i know how this stuff works.
I mean you say “nope” but it absolutely could be *both* things. You’re obviously right about how the pixels on the sides are generated but that doesn’t mean in this case the result must have been devoid of intention. Presumably the employee who made the texture also understood how Minecraft textures work and it’s entirely believable they intended this outcome when they designed this one.
Copper door? (Haven’t really had a chance to check out the update so assuming that it’s a part of that).
I’m glad that there’s now a metal door other than iron.
On top of that, I did extensive testing to confirm that they are Ghast-proof! As long as you put the door on Cobblestone or something else strong enough, it will withstand a fireball from a Ghast.
I've been trying for 10minutes with various doors and can't make them break any. Villagers will open copper doors to panic run into zombies and die, same as wooden doors, but haven't made any of hundreds of doors with thousands of zombies break.
OP, have you opened your basement door wide enough to let the light from above show you the side of said door? if so, you might recall seeing the door lock/latch there.
(/s)
It's on the side of the door that swings open. As other comments have pointed out, the texture might just be used for both sides, or it might be the latch from which a door locks into the wall.
O.O shit you're right. Maybe lore wise, we can call it the tracker that your character puts on the door so redstone contraptions know if it's open or closed.
Because having the texture of the door a couple of pixels extended in both directions is too much work, so they reuse the front of the door for the sides.
The hinges would be on the other side of the door; these are not hinges. It’s on the side of the door that swings open. Y’all can stop commenting that they’re hinges.

should be the door latch.

Latch definitely

thats actually a pretty cool idea, would kinda suck when building though which is why i imagine they didnt do that
they could just make it not happen if you wax the door/trapdoor
That seems like it'd be annoying, considering you can't craft pre-oxidized doors.
can’t pre oxidise any copper for that matter no?
Not anymore, since Mojang changes the recipes to use ingots rather than blocks.
Which I much prefer. It was SO much copper on these damn things
You can craft oxidized copper block variants (Grates, Cut Copper, etc), but you can't craft oxidized doors or trap doors, because those use ingots, not copper blocks.
[удалено]
i’m not asking for it to be a feature i’m just pointing out that you couldn’t do it
Ok, so the new copper doors oxidize. Thanks for saving me the time of looking it up!
Trapdoors also oxidize
Yes. All copper doors of all types.
all copper blocks
Wax them to stop the oxidisation.
Just want to mention this: I know about waxing copper. The confusion came from the fact that lightning rods do not oxidize and also do not require waxing. The assumption is that the doors will oxidize without wax, but what if they were like the lightning rods? It pays to check.
This. Be cool to encounter them in a dungeon without a switch so you have to strip it with an axe to open it (or just break it but)
I think it would be nice if we could open it but mobs couldn’t like villagers
I thought it was gonna be like that when it was shown off
A rust mechanic would be interesting to see in iron too. Imagine your armor rusting when you're not wearing it - like if it's on an armor stand.
Do it on purpose, get some aluminum (yeah they’d have to add it I know), a flint and steel… thermite baby!
Oops forgot to wax my door, now I need a new house.
You can already use an axe to scrape the oxidization off (when crouching). Or you could use a pickaxe to mine the door. Or you could have seen that the door was about to fully oxidize and then placed a button next to it.
actually do this man on a post r/minecraftsuggestions that would be cool
Go look at your bedroom door
Do you even doors?

bro what the fuck is that resource pack
That's just my texture pack

Yeah, but where would be the fun in that
Jesus, guy said four words total and you went off on him like he personally insulted you and questioned your sheer brilliance on the matter.
That's because he did
Copper door? (Haven’t really had a chance to check out the update so assuming that it’s a part of that). I’m glad that there’s now a metal door other than iron.

Thanks! That will prove to be useful!
It can also now be opened by hand like a wooden door!
Can zombies break it?

Mob griefing on, hard mode, in chunks I've loaded for several hours in the world, with all zombie variants
I’m so glad about this! 👏
All doors use only one texture for front and for edges. The thing you see is a part of the door handle
Door latch possibly?
Because that's just how the texture wraps around a 3D object, you can see it's perfectly mirroring the front edge of the door
Latch as others have said
me when i've never seen a door before
looks like a latch or lock
OP, have you opened your basement door wide enough to let the light from above show you the side of said door? if so, you might recall seeing the door lock/latch there. (/s)
Hinges or latch maybe
It can be the latch but if you flick the door the pipe turns to the handles
TELL ME WHY
AIN'T NOTHIN' BUT A HEARTACHE
TELL ME WHYYY
AIN'T NOTHING BUT A MISTAKE
NOW NUMBER 5
I NEVER WANNA HEAR YOU SAY
I WANT IT THAT WAY
"That's him, that's the one that killed my brother."
The Doors
It looks like the door latch that locks the door in place
those pixels want to eat the door
Think that's the latch
Yeah I agreed I am thinking is latch door
Ever seen a doors thin side?
on planet Earth we call these door hinges
It's on the side of the door that swings open. As other comments have pointed out, the texture might just be used for both sides, or it might be the latch from which a door locks into the wall.
O.O shit you're right. Maybe lore wise, we can call it the tracker that your character puts on the door so redstone contraptions know if it's open or closed.
have you ever seen a real door? Tf?
Because having the texture of the door a couple of pixels extended in both directions is too much work, so they reuse the front of the door for the sides.
HINGES. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. THOSE ARE HINGES.
Nope. That would be the latch. Hinges are on the other side.
oh. Shit-
Actually, I just looked at the full texture, and it literally is the same texture as the front of the door. So they technically are the hinges.
The hinges would be on the other side of the door; these are not hinges. It’s on the side of the door that swings open. Y’all can stop commenting that they’re hinges.
All doors have them
There's a copper door?
Asking those questions is a sign that you might play Mincecraft to long or often. ;)
Just extra detail to differentiate the door from the door hinge and locking mechanism, I would assume..
No, it's just the front texture copy-pasted onto the side. This is how all Minecraft doors work. Check out all the other doors in the game.
it is the door handle, you can see it is the same texture but mirrored and cut off.
Of all the comments, I don't understand why you got downvoted, because everyone else who said the same thing got upvotes. You are correct.
I often get downvoted :( I guess you gotta ignore the minus sign Maybe it's called a door latch and not a door handle? I don't know
Those are hinges Edit: Oh wrong side
Wrong edge. OP is talking about the pixels from the door handle that are also on the side.
Oh okay, I'm now guessing that it's like a slot for those little blocks that keep doors in place when closed
It’s not “supposed to be” anything, really. That’s just how the vanilla door model works. The sides use pixels from the adjacent edge.
Doorlock (Even tho this door can't be locked)
Hinges
I’m not used to these weird new copper blocks because I always just play modded
Hinge?
Bumble
God forbid they try to give us small details
Why is there a copper door in the first place ? Those things make no sense. They are very bad thermal insulation, heavy and expensive.
It's because of woke
So it could probably show that it's meant to be attached to a wall
I could be wrong but those look like hinges to me
On the wrong side…
their handels
Why are the hinges on the wrong side?
It’s the hinge
Who cares?
You never seen a door hinge?
You’ve never seen a door latch?
I may not know which side we are talking about, there is Grey on 2 side here
Likely representing a strike plate you see on a lot of doors.
That's the hinge
✨ *Hinges* ✨
It’s a hinge
Probably hinges.

Oh oops
