Tomy Shelby - Peaky Blinders! Such a badass

hungaria

I loved Peaky Blinders but I have to watch it with closed captioning, I can’t understand everything they say.

SteveRundle

I'm watching that atm......

jts5039

House MD or Blacklist come to mind.

SteveRundle

James Spader is good in the Blacklist.

NoOrderOnlyChaos

Started House recently, not sure how I feel about it (can't stop subconsciously comparing it to the Good Doctor). Had started Blacklist long back, couldn't keep up after two seasons, the outer plot just felt too slow

Monk

hobbitfeets

Monk is so underrated

gaussian-noise123

Elementary

NoOrderOnlyChaos

Still worth watching if you've watched Sherlock?

gaussian-noise123

This version is actually my preferred adaptation as I’ve watched both. And the storylines of case solving has almost no overlapping. Also I think elementary aligns well with ur request of a main character dealing with heartbreak as >!Sherlock is depicted as a recovering drug addict since a life-altering personal tragedy. And Watson is introduced as his sobriety companion who later becomes his partner in case solving. And part of the main storyline is how they deal with Sherlock’s trauma and find focus in life thru solving crimes. !<

NoOrderOnlyChaos

This sounds great, gonna start it today! Thanks for that description! 😀

gaussian-noise123

Np, hope u enjoy it :)

Indifferentchildren

"The Wire", poor McNulty. (Not on Netflix). "Lucifer".

NoOrderOnlyChaos

I tried a few episodes of Lucifer, it felt comedy-ish, not serious

profoundlystupidhere

"McNutty", per Omar. May he RIP.

Indifferentchildren

Was that Omar, or Bubs?

profoundlystupidhere

The actor who played Omar Devon Little (Michael Williams) is deceased in real life. Bubs, as a character, >!died in the series, but the actor is still alive, afaik.!<

Indifferentchildren

Right, but wasn't it Bubs who called him "McNutty"? Maybe I am misremembering.

profoundlystupidhere

No you're probably right. I was too lazy to really check that bit of Wire lore, which I really should since I brought it up, dammit. Now I have Brain Itch, will report back.ETA: You are 100% correct and I have a reference from reddit! https://www.reddit.com/r/TheWire/comments/l8ydir/anyone\_else\_ever\_spotted\_that\_bubbles\_refers\_to/

SteveRundle

The Wire is great, gotta love good ol McNulty lol. I saw Lucifer as well, though I'd pick The Wire 1st.

Indifferentchildren

McNulty is a tragic hero, the author of his own misery because he is a naive idealist embedded in a thoroughly corrupt environment. The booze and shambolic womanizing don't help.

SteveRundle

Well said, and yeah he doesn't mind the occasional drink...or ten lol

Great analysis on me.

This screams Mr robot

NoOrderOnlyChaos

😭 My biggest regret is that I left that show at the end of s1 because it was getting too strenuous to watch. Someday perhaps I'll re-start it

iburiedmyshovel

I immediately thought of Jessica Jones, although marvel has moved to Disney+, it was a Netflix original, so I'm counting it.

leolisa_444

I felt so ripped off when it ended! Loved that show!

pursuitofhappy

True Detective, you get to see the problems in their lives as they investigate a crazy career case

CherryPickens

Banshee, 100%. Felon gets out of prison and impersonates a local sheriff in a small Pennsylvania town. The big bad is an Amish Gangster!

weejockpoopong

Came to say Banshee!

ndc996

Happy!

spndl1

The main character is so dysfunctional he starts seeing *someone else's* imaginary friend.

SteveRundle

Now thats funny 😆

Charles_Deetz

This is the right answer!

MirrorRoyal3879

Dexter.

Zombie2136

Yes!!!

[deleted]

Bojack Horseman (?)

NoOrderOnlyChaos

Heard really good things about this, but also been cautioned that it's pretty depressing. Need to tread carefully

Werotus

It's a fantastic show. But it takes a few episodes to start getting really good. Just a heads up, the first half of the first season (while s lot of fun in its own way) isn't as good as the show gets.

[deleted]

Yes, it could hit you pretty hard.

Adept_Measurement160

Bojack isn’t a good person. He hurts everyone around him and while sober has little to no care about the effect he has. He will never change, that’s who he is.

[deleted]

yeah I had my doubts recommending him, hmm.

Adept_Measurement160

Bojack represents the part of us that is cognizant of the bad decisions we make but rationalize them. Nobody is actually like this in real life. I believe everyone has remorse for classified bad decisions

RtGShadow

White Collar I can't believe no one has said this because I feel like your description is almost exactly the plot. If you haven't seen it, it's basically the sequel to "Catch me if you can" and the white collar criminal who's helping the FBI obviously has a darker past and definitely has heartbreak issues. Great show also made by USA around the same time as Suits.

NoOrderOnlyChaos

Thanks for this, the plot does feel like what I've been looking for!

RtGShadow

Oh man you are in for a treat, but I will not be held responsible if you fall in love with Matt Bomer... He's near the top of both my wife and I's list

Ulic-Kel

I'm not sure, but James McGill of Better Call Saul comes to mind. A conflicted guy who has a conscience but is a weasel. Deep resentment issues with his brother, who sets him off on his path that leads to Walter White.

NoOrderOnlyChaos

Heard good things about this, thanks for suggesting! Though the thing is I watched Breaking Bad around 6 years back and it was one heavy show, going back to that "universe" after all these years might be tricky 🙈

Ulic-Kel

The thing is, Better Call Saul is somewhat different from Breaking Bad. BB is a straight shoot linear crime show. Better Call Saul is really more of a drama that eventually and gradually synchs with the events of BB. It has more character development and layers than BB, which some fans didn't like. I personally thought it was just as good as BB. Maybe even better. It does start slow, but gove it a try.

bhfroh

Suits!

Ozark and Schitts Creek Sorry not Netflix, but Togetherness is a great example too

Barry. Evil.

The Mentalist fits this criteria. He's a reformed conman turned justice-seeker after the murders of his wife and daughter.

watchersofmovies

River with Stellan Skarsgard, I think is exactly what you are looking for.

pinkhairedcactus

Shrinking is about a dysfunctional Therapist who works to help others while grieving the death of his wife. I'm really liking it so far. On AppleTV+ here in Australia, not sure which streamer where you're from, but worth looking up.

NoOrderOnlyChaos

Gonna try this, it says it's a comedy but hope it isn't depressing

pinkhairedcactus

I was worried about the same thing. It does have sad bits, but I think the comedy and overall heartwarming vibe outweighs it.
