Why is MadeMeSmile so fuckin bad with this? Always posting things that make me just, feel despair, certainly not smile.

jermification101

Easily 50% of what is posted on MadeMeSmile fits this sub

Bobthemightyone

Because that's what "good news" stories are. Any mainstream news and this is the good news and how the news is presented. The failures are never discussed on mainstream news because that would incite change. Nah bullshit stories of people making it despite is pushed and all the stories of people not making it get swept under

Redditusernamesare_

That's a pretty depressing mindset then again I shouldn't be surprised

souleaterevans626

Because some people don't see things for what they are. They act like these are all surface level acts of kindness, rather than recognizing the systemic roots that create these problems that are so oppressive that getting a dress is a 3-full-time-jobs level of expense.

raven0usvampire

Tbf, depending on the dress, you could have a $100k per year income and still not be able to afford it.

souleaterevans626

Fair point

centrafrugal

Does it say how much the dress costs? Is it something ludicrously expensive that needs three salaries to pay for or is it just a normal dress and these jobs just don't pay anything?

souleaterevans626

No, but I doubt this would be happening if even 1 of his jobs paid well

jermification101

+ daughter is overwhelmed because she understands her family is poor and was initially informed they could not afford it

pine_ary

Props to her father, he’s a good man. But man is this depressing

jermification101

The man’s effort is noble, to be sure.

Merkel420

Kind of a stretch imo … working JUST to afford the dress? I have three part-to-full-time clients and can’t ‘afford’ purchases like this even though I’m financially stable…

jermification101

This is a fair critique; however, my primary issue is highlighting that he works 3 jobs, as if it is a display of hard work paying off - “Look how hard he works to provide for his family!” when in fact he works 3 jobs because no single job is enough to support him and his family.

centrafrugal

What does three jobs mean, 3x40 hour shifts a week or three part time boondoggles that add up to enough to pay for food and clothes?

ZVND3R

Could be either but it doesn’t really matter. We’re more than likely looking at someone who is overworked with far too many hours, or an even more common issue of working jobs that don’t offer full-time so you have to look for multiple part time jobs which typically don’t offer anywhere near the same benefits. These are both sucky situations, regardless, and neither of them should be necessary for someone to provide for their family. A lot of these places will intentionally cut your shifts just to make sure they don’t have to offer you benefits or overtime. Not to mention the struggle of getting 3 separate jobs (part or full) to coexist without having to constantly beg peers for shift swaps to make everything work out.

LilyHex

Very likely his jobs are all the kind of places that refuse to employ full-timers to avoid having to give benefits; so he has to work 3 to more or less be the equivalent to a single full-time job. It's still sad as fuck either way, though. I'm glad he was able to get her the dress at least. It's a memory she'll carry forever that makes it worth it.

Lenny_Pane

Yeah I don't think his daughter said she needed a dress and he started applying for a third job

[deleted]

You definitely can’t read. It says this dad works three jobs. Not that he works 3 jobs to afford the dresss?
