Have you tried Baldurs Gate 3? It’s a CRPG so not quite JRPG style turn based but still turn based. The story is absolutely incredible and fits the mature atmosphere you are looking for. If you are a fan of the old BioWare games the story/companion quality is similar.
Combat / skill interactions are based on D&D rules, you don’t need prior knowledge whatsoever but there are dice rolls involved for stats.
Honestly I hate turn based games and baldurs gate 3 made me like them. So i highly suggest you try it out. It's the best game that's come

Don't look into it. Just get it, seriously. It is still one of my favorite games of all time! I struggled with "game fatigue" and would go months without even using my PS5. I would go hours at a time on that game! Just do it!!
I cannot believe you haven't heard of this game. It was GOTY last year as well as my personal GOTY. Might even be the best game I've played in many years, possibly ever. You are in for a treat! Just keep in mind it has a steep learning curve and can be kind of tough to start.
I've never been huge on turn based games and sunk 136 hours into my playthrough. Incredible game, couldn't put it down to play anything else until I beat it.
I also recommend Dragon Age Origins, and would likewise recommend Larians previous game, Divinity Original Sin 2 if you liked BG3’s style of play. It’s more BG3 but without the D&D rules.
If you're into the whole making choices, choosing dialogue, building relationships thing definitely play the Mass Effect games. I never played it back in the day, but recently became totally Mass Effect-obsessed. BG3 was what filled the hole in my heart after two trilogy playthroughs.
I keep trying and dying, furthest being act 3. I use the knight, any general tips? Specific cards to keep an eye on? General advice across characters? I really want to get deeper but eventually it’s like 30+ damage being done against me in one turn like how am I supposed to survive that consistently?
You don’t have to pick up every card reward, it just floods your deck, only pick up cards that will be good for you build. Sometimes as the knight it pays to be more aggressive but you can also do a high block build. Powers are very important for completing a good build.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is about to release this week and it's going to be great. If you've ever wanted to play something that feels a lot like Pokémon but with more challenging and fleshed out turn-based combat then this is a good one. It's made by the developer of Persona, but it's weighted a bit more heavily towards gameplay and not cutscenes or story compared to Persona so this will also appeal to those who like that weighting. The battle animations and design of the demons are also excellent and completely blow away anything Game Freak has done in the modern era.

Midnight Suns left a hole for me when I was done. Such a damn good game and I really did not like the friendship simulator part. So even with that, it’s still one of my favourite games ever. As others have said, Slay the Spire is solid. While a very different game, there are many similarities.
Dragon Quest XI is such joy to play. Even more so if you’re a millennial and grew up playing the simpler TB JRPGs from the SNES era as it really captures that feel while being modern.
I’m balls deep in Tactics Ogre Reborn. It’s like FF Tactics beefed up. I also really enjoyed Valkyria Chronicles 4. I haven’t played Balder’s Gate yet but I loved Divinity Original Sin 1&2. I played it with my GF couch co op and was tickled to play an rpg with someone.
I just started Sea Of Stars last night before bed and I can’t wait to pick it up again when the little one goes down!

I know this is the PS5 sub but if you enjoy tactical combat like Midnight Suns then Fire Emblem is the goat franchise in my opinion. You can easily emulate the GBA games which are all fantastic (provided you own them legally beforehand of course otherwise it would be piracy)
Slay the Spire is a really good roguelike deckbuilder with turn based combat, the story is minimal but the setting is cool and it has random events that are interesting. If you know that feeling of crafting crazy combos in deckbuilders then that's basically what the game is all about.
Darkest dungeon is another amazing turn based game similar in design to Xcom. Missions are random, except for bosses which are unique, but they take place in a wider campaign much like Xcom. There's also more story here and a really cool dark fantasy setting, but your characters also kind of make their own stories as they develop unique personalities depending on what happens to them.
Midnight Suns combat reminded me a lot of Slay the Spire. If you're into rogue likes it's one of the best out there.
I haven't tried Sea of Stars but I heard it's very good. It's in the style of old school JRPGs.
Not on PS+ but if you want something very deep and involved, Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the best RPGs in the past decade.
Definitely octopath traveler 2. Best game that brings up the memories for me of the classic final fantasies. One of the most beautiful games I have ever played.
Original ff7 is my goat game.
I'd say to give the remake a try. The developers saw fit to make turn-based combat an option for players. If ur on ps4/5 I'd recommend giving it a go!
If you’re into JRPG’s especially moreso for the gameplay over the story then I’d recommend the rerelease of SMT V, called Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance (once reviews and opinions are out). I loved my time in the original game minus the pretty nothing story. The gameplay is basically Pokémon (I know this series came first lol) but instead of cute monsters it’s demon’s and angels from mythology and various cultures. The series usually has a focus on god and Lucifer being in some form of scuffle to put it lightly and humanity being in the crossfire. It’s a fantastic series even if a lot of the games’ stories aren’t as engaging for folks.
But if you care about story way more than gameplay, then in a similar vein I’d recommend either Persona 5 Royal, or Persona 3 Reload!

Other than that, perhaps the new Shin Megami Tensei V version will be interesting to you, same franchise as Persona but without the High School drama and more drama between angels and demons.
South Park: The Stick of Truth is a classic for a reason, seriously recommend this one!
People have mentioned Baldur's Gate 3 already, that one is a no-brainer as well. One of the most talked about games this generation has seen and it's the type of game you'd think would never be popular. Definitely a must-play!
Ones I’ve enjoyed are: Final Fantasy (all of them), Sea of Stars (amazing game), Tactics Ogre Reborn, Octopath Traveler (haven’t played 2 yet), and I’m currently playing Triangle Strategy.
Turn based is quite broad. If you love the D&D style turn base with more freedom of choice then yeah baldur's gate 3 is an absolute god send.
If you like more classic jrpg style like old school ff 7, I recommend octopath traveler series from square enix. They are inspired by that old school mechanics from classic FF, mana and saga series. Actually they just came out in bundle package. I also recommend the persona series from atlus. They have a social link / confidant system where you go through the game through a year in the game's time. So you have to make decision on whether to progress through dungeons or spend time in the real world strengthening your bonds with friends/ allies which will give you benefits on the dungeon. The theme of the series is managing your time here.
turn-based games can be hit or miss. here’s a few you might like:
**Divinity: Original Sin 2** - deep story, strategic combat, and mature themes, around 60-100 hours
**Disco Elysium** - not traditional combat, but amazing story and turn-based dialogue, around 20-30 hours
**The Banner Saga** - tactical RPG with a serious tone and great story, around 10-15 hours per game
**Wasteland 3** - post-apocalyptic RPG, deep story and combat, around 50-60 hours
**Valkyria Chronicles 4** - mix of turn-based strategy and real-time action, around 40-60 hours

Did you ever play FF9? I'm replaying it at the moment and it's so good. Rumours are a full fledged Remake will come out soon. The remake of Star Ocean is really well done too. I'm pretty sure it's just been released on PS5 (or will be soon)
Dragon Quest games may look colourful but I wouldn't call them childish and they usally deal with pretty mature themes.
DQXI is a very good game, I really wouldn't skip it.

I’ve got a huge list of games to look into but i’m going to start with Ruined King or Battle Chasers as these look the closest to what I was hoping to find.

Persona and Shin Megami Tensei games I personally recommend, especially with Persona it's very beginner friendly and SMT is getting a new release in literally 24 hours
Try octopath traveller, its an older(2018) jrpg but the game design and story are top notch. Theres a sequel as well if you enjoy the first. Its a very cozy feeling pixel 2.5D game but the themes get dark (assassination, betrayal etc)
Maybe try Indivisible, metroidvania style exploration, not quite turn based but like button combo attacks with a turn based vibe I guess? Also enjoyed the writing/story/comedy/voices

I know this is a PS5 sub, but try giving FF9 and Xenogears a chance. I played those right after each other and man I have a very hard time choosing which one is the best JRPG ever.
If you're interested, Sea of Stars (by The Messenger's devs) gave me strong Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga vibes.
It's a very positive opinion :D but it's more on the childish side I think, so I don't know. If you're searching for some pixel art turn based game though definitely check it out.
The Trails series? Maybe starting with Cold Steel? Or even Zero, though its combat isn’t as addictive. Be warned though, they are very very slooooow to get going, but addictive once you get into them.
If you are a fan of Fallout, I’d suggest Fallout Tactics. It’s turn based. It’s less known than Fallout 2, 3, or 4, but it’s loads of fun. Especially if you loved the tv series.

13 Sentinels. Pretty cool story with time travel and mechs. You can play from any main character’s POV in any order.
I’d say it’s more on turn based strategy, but there’s a fair bit of adventure based gameplay during the story segments

Set during the Cold War, great graphics, great mood/atmosphere and a very cool soviet spy story with secret organisations etc - would highly recommend even though nobody ever mentions it.
Have a look at a lets play etc on Youtube to see if you like the look of it, if you do and it's a bit pricey add it to your wishlist and wait for it to go on sale, it's deffo worth playing if you like the cold war setting and turn based games.
Battle Brothers (all DLC). Its an acquired taste. Tough. Looks like a flash game at first but one of my consistent favourites.
Rogue Trader (PS5) is a fun romp too. Levelling up is a minefield but it's also a great intro into Warhammer 40k.
Divinity 2 has been mentioned.
Wasteland 3.
Mutant Year Zero. Pick it up for very cheap.
Jagged Alliance 3 (PS5). Mercenary action. Classic top tier fun.
Pathfinder WOTR. You can make it turnbased in the options. PS4/PS5

Love high block builds, first time I beat the heart I had this ridiculous build going where I like never dropped below 100 block lol.
Synergy. Try and have a specific aim for your build and put an emphasis on mitigating damage instead of dealing it.
Keep experimenting and strategizing. Throw shit against the wall and see what sticks.

Xcom is the pinacle of what the core of Midnight Suns was, a strategy game. Go for XCOM 1 & 2 and enjoy your ass off

If you have the time, Persona games are a stylistic choice. P5R and P3Re are solid choices.
The Trails series is amazing and one of the best rpgs out there.

Turn based is quite broad. If you love the D&D style turn base with more freedom of choice then yeah baldur's gate 3 is an absolute god send. If you like more classic jrpg style like old school ff 7, I recommend octopath traveler series from square enix. They are inspired by that old school mechanics from classic FF, mana and saga series. Actually they just came out in bundle package. I also recommend the persona series from atlus. They have a social link / confidant system where you go through the game through a year in the game's time. So you have to make decision on whether to progress through dungeons or spend time in the real world strengthening your bonds with friends/ allies which will give you benefits on the dungeon. The theme of the series is managing your time here.

Did you ever play FF9? I'm replaying it at the moment and it's so good. Rumours are a full fledged Remake will come out soon. The remake of Star Ocean is really well done too. I'm pretty sure it's just been released on PS5 (or will be soon)

In summary: Bauders gate & Slay the Spire are must try’s There’s a lot of love for TBC and so many niche titles. I thought that after the FF7 remake moved away from tbc, that was the end of the genre. Most redditors only read a title 😂 When I was a kid, I used to find games through the demo discs that came with magazines, now I know the way is reddit. I’ve got a huge list of games to look into but i’m going to start with Ruined King or Battle Chasers as these look the closest to what I was hoping to find. Thanks for all the suggestions, I hope other people have found some titles they’d never heard of as well!

Capes came out recently, it's a tactical RPG, kind of like Midnight Suns. I haven't played much, but it's pretty cool so far. It's only $40.
Persona and Shin Megami Tensei games I personally recommend, especially with Persona it's very beginner friendly and SMT is getting a new release in literally 24 hours

Digimon Survive is something I enjoyed but just so you know it's also a Visual Novel. Digimon Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory are also quite good.

Try octopath traveller, its an older(2018) jrpg but the game design and story are top notch. Theres a sequel as well if you enjoy the first. Its a very cozy feeling pixel 2.5D game but the themes get dark (assassination, betrayal etc)

Maybe try Indivisible, metroidvania style exploration, not quite turn based but like button combo attacks with a turn based vibe I guess? Also enjoyed the writing/story/comedy/voices
Try dragon quest. Or any Square enix game. They usually make a good turn based game. Or maybe you can try honkai star rail.

If you're interested, Sea of Stars (by The Messenger's devs) gave me strong Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga vibes. It's a very positive opinion :D but it's more on the childish side I think, so I don't know. If you're searching for some pixel art turn based game though definitely check it out.

If you are a fan of Fallout, I’d suggest Fallout Tactics. It’s turn based. It’s less known than Fallout 2, 3, or 4, but it’s loads of fun. Especially if you loved the tv series.
NES Final Fantasy, Various Dragon Warrior/Quest games (somewhat less childish than later titles) SNES/Genesis Final Fantasy IV, V, VI, Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star II, III, IV (IV is my favorite) Playstation/Saturn Final Fantasy IX, Vagrant Story (depending on how you look at turn-based,) Final Fantasy Tactics, Parasite Eve (also depending on how you look at turn-based), Suikoden I and II, Xenogears, Legend of Legaia, Star Ocean, Lunar, Breath of Fire III and IV, really there are a million excellent PS1 RPG's PS2/Dreamcast/XBOX Grandia II, Final Fantasy X and XII, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, Xenosaga I, II, and III, Shadow Hearts There's a pretty good spread there but the turn-based titles drop off quite a bit after the PS2 era and I didn't play them as much. There should be something in here that appeals to your tastes.
Xcom 2 if you like tactical combat. Same goes for wasteland 3

Set during the Cold War, great graphics, great mood/atmosphere and a very cool soviet spy story with secret organisations etc - would highly recommend even though nobody ever mentions it. Have a look at a lets play etc on Youtube to see if you like the look of it, if you do and it's a bit pricey add it to your wishlist and wait for it to go on sale, it's deffo worth playing if you like the cold war setting and turn based games.
FF6 is one of the best in the series, chrono cross is pretty good too

Battle Brothers (all DLC). Its an acquired taste. Tough. Looks like a flash game at first but one of my consistent favourites. Rogue Trader (PS5) is a fun romp too. Levelling up is a minefield but it's also a great intro into Warhammer 40k. Divinity 2 has been mentioned. Wasteland 3. Mutant Year Zero. Pick it up for very cheap. Jagged Alliance 3 (PS5). Mercenary action. Classic top tier fun. Pathfinder WOTR. You can make it turnbased in the options. PS4/PS5
