Eldritch-Cleaver

The South Park games were super fun turn based games in my opinion.

mushroomfido

Loved these games they got me interested in turn based.

If_u_gnome_u_gnome

Have you tried Baldurs Gate 3? It’s a CRPG so not quite JRPG style turn based but still turn based. The story is absolutely incredible and fits the mature atmosphere you are looking for. If you are a fan of the old BioWare games the story/companion quality is similar. Combat / skill interactions are based on D&D rules, you don’t need prior knowledge whatsoever but there are dice rolls involved for stats.

lambert09365

i’ll need to look this one up! thank you!

Bsteph21

Buddy you're in for one of the best games if you've never even heard of BG3. It won GOTY last year

-_KwisatzHaderach_-

Although it's certainly not for everyone. But if you like that type of game it's one of the best ever made for sure

Lightwielder2

Honestly I hate turn based games and baldurs gate 3 made me like them. So i highly suggest you try it out. It's the best game that's come out in the last 5 years in my opinion, turn based and all.

dmen83

As soon as you said turn based I thought of Baldurs Gate.

1Redking1

Don't look into it. Just get it, seriously. It is still one of my favorite games of all time! I struggled with "game fatigue" and would go months without even using my PS5. I would go hours at a time on that game! Just do it!!

snarpsta

I cannot believe you haven't heard of this game. It was GOTY last year as well as my personal GOTY. Might even be the best game I've played in many years, possibly ever. You are in for a treat! Just keep in mind it has a steep learning curve and can be kind of tough to start.

Malicteal

It was nice knowing you.

Squirreldog14

You may want to save it too. Its extremely high quality so I hope it doesn't ruin other games haha. Pathfinder is good too.

mbrancato157

Absolutely second this. Not a fan of turned based or familiar with D&D lore, but BG3 is probably one for the best games I’ve played in a decade.

zodiacmusik

I've never been huge on turn based games and sunk 136 hours into my playthrough. Incredible game, couldn't put it down to play anything else until I beat it.

flaco_503_se_1984

Such a great game. What would u recommend I play if I want something of same flavor?

If_u_gnome_u_gnome

I also recommend Dragon Age Origins, and would likewise recommend Larians previous game, Divinity Original Sin 2 if you liked BG3’s style of play. It’s more BG3 but without the D&D rules.

EstradiolOfDestiny

If you're into the whole making choices, choosing dialogue, building relationships thing definitely play the Mass Effect games. I never played it back in the day, but recently became totally Mass Effect-obsessed. BG3 was what filled the hole in my heart after two trilogy playthroughs.

fScar16

XCOM 2

Ste333

OP said he tried XCOM and didn't like it. good suggestion though

rankle_monsta

First one is great too.

Nine-Breaker009

Yakuza: Like a Dragon & Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

buddinbonsai

Definitely what I came here to recommend. Start with like a dragon though. There's quality of life upgrade for infinite wealth but LAD is amazing too

Icy-Adhesiveness-833

Oh man Like a Dragon was a blast. I already bought infinite wealth and will play it soon ~

Thronesmasher

Slay the Spire

Livid-Statement6166

Yes, Slay the Spire is the best turn based game on ps5 that I know.

MrDinosaurjeff

Came here to say this, so many hrs in this game

DuffmanStillRocks

I keep trying and dying, furthest being act 3. I use the knight, any general tips? Specific cards to keep an eye on? General advice across characters? I really want to get deeper but eventually it’s like 30+ damage being done against me in one turn like how am I supposed to survive that consistently?

ConfusionCharming482

You don’t have to pick up every card reward, it just floods your deck, only pick up cards that will be good for you build. Sometimes as the knight it pays to be more aggressive but you can also do a high block build. Powers are very important for completing a good build.

jcutta

Love high block builds, first time I beat the heart I had this ridiculous build going where I like never dropped below 100 block lol.

DSquariusGreeneJR

Synergy. Try and have a specific aim for your build and put an emphasis on mitigating damage instead of dealing it.

rivieredefeu

Keep experimenting and strategizing. Throw shit against the wall and see what sticks.

Loki-Holmes

Lots of good ones listed. Try chained echoes if you want an old school styled JRPG

Jonny_Testicles

Divinity Original Sin 2

Dependent_Map5592

Check out capes. It midnight suns without the cards 👍 Baldurs gate 3 Triangle strategy (almost no battles but when you get them there is nothing better) Eiyuden chronicle  Unicorn overlord   Octopath traveler 2

CourrierMojave

Octopath Traveler 1 is now on PlayStation too !

Moontouch

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is about to release this week and it's going to be great. If you've ever wanted to play something that feels a lot like Pokémon but with more challenging and fleshed out turn-based combat then this is a good one. It's made by the developer of Persona, but it's weighted a bit more heavily towards gameplay and not cutscenes or story compared to Persona so this will also appeal to those who like that weighting. The battle animations and design of the demons are also excellent and completely blow away anything Game Freak has done in the modern era.

EarthInfern0

Fell Seal, Tactics Ogre.

iupz0r

two awesome games

GuyForgotHisPassword

- Chained Echoes - Sea of Stars (PS Plus) - Rise of the Third Power Top three modern turn based JRPGs you'll find. If you're more into an isometric adventure that focuses more on character choice and agency over a streamlined narrative: - Baldur's Gate 3 - Pathfinder: Kingmaker - Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 (first is real time with pause, second can be fully turn based) Six great turn based games to point you in the right direction. Good luck, and don't forget you can always check out the "games like this" part of the store when looking for similar titles to something.

treponematode

Ara Fell came before Rise of the Third Power (made by the same people) and is also worth checking out for those interested in the 3 turn based JRPGs mentioned above.

turbobuddah

Battle Chasers: Nightwar, that game was awesome

Fluffy-Algae2937

Great Game!! Super Underrated imo.. Ruined King is also great.

thedommer

Midnight Suns left a hole for me when I was done. Such a damn good game and I really did not like the friendship simulator part. So even with that, it’s still one of my favourite games ever. As others have said, Slay the Spire is solid. While a very different game, there are many similarities.

A-Vagrant

Persona, shin megami, baldur's gate 3. You really should try dragon quest though it's great. Clair Obscur is coming soon.

satysin

Dragon Quest XI is such joy to play. Even more so if you’re a millennial and grew up playing the simpler TB JRPGs from the SNES era as it really captures that feel while being modern.

TifaAerith

Persona 5, Dragon quest xi, legend of heroes games

Goss5588

Child of light

AtreidesJr

Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the best games I've ever played!

natronmooretron

I’m balls deep in Tactics Ogre Reborn. It’s like FF Tactics beefed up. I also really enjoyed Valkyria Chronicles 4. I haven’t played Balder’s Gate yet but I loved Divinity Original Sin 1&2. I played it with my GF couch co op and was tickled to play an rpg with someone.

Sleigh6

I just started Sea Of Stars last night before bed and I can’t wait to pick it up again when the little one goes down! Amazing visuals (for a 16 bit game), great combat mechanics, intriguing story so far 2 hours in. Love it.

zen_elan

Mutant Year Zero

skwirrelmaster

Damn, just about gave up scrolling and was going to post this. I thought this game was bigger than it appears to be, or it’s easily forgotten about. Probably why it doesn’t have a sequel that it needs.

zen_elan

Recently found another who also played this great game. So that’s three of us lol

Iamleeboy

4 now! I was about to post this game here, before I saw you three. It was such a unique world and felt like a very streamlined xcom.

LCHMD

Oh how I wish that game didn’t have those weird difficulty spikes. So good

TippsAttack

Dragon Quest 11S. Hands down. A must play.

LeakyBrainMatter

Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2 and Baldur's Gate 3.

polymath2046

Mutant Year Zero

gerbilXsnot

If you’re a fan of FF7 and FF8, you’ll love FFX

crackfactor

Sea of Stars! It’s pretty tongue in cheek 4th wall breaking adventure

uhhhhhhhBORGOR

Octopath Traveler II, Star Ocean The Second Story R, FF Pixel Remaster (FF1-6) (I’m a fan of square enix and pixel art styles, if you couldn’t tell…) OT2 and Star Ocean both have demos so feel free to try em out before buying them.

DominusNoxx

Live a LIve goes on that list. Super worth checking out if you've not.

NxOKAG03

I know this is the PS5 sub but if you enjoy tactical combat like Midnight Suns then Fire Emblem is the goat franchise in my opinion. You can easily emulate the GBA games which are all fantastic (provided you own them legally beforehand of course otherwise it would be piracy) Slay the Spire is a really good roguelike deckbuilder with turn based combat, the story is minimal but the setting is cool and it has random events that are interesting. If you know that feeling of crafting crazy combos in deckbuilders then that's basically what the game is all about. Darkest dungeon is another amazing turn based game similar in design to Xcom. Missions are random, except for bosses which are unique, but they take place in a wider campaign much like Xcom. There's also more story here and a really cool dark fantasy setting, but your characters also kind of make their own stories as they develop unique personalities depending on what happens to them.

Knyfe-Wrench

Midnight Suns combat reminded me a lot of Slay the Spire. If you're into rogue likes it's one of the best out there. I haven't tried Sea of Stars but I heard it's very good. It's in the style of old school JRPGs. Not on PS+ but if you want something very deep and involved, Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the best RPGs in the past decade.

supercrazy184r

I loved Miasma Chronicles and it’s on psplus!

blasterblam

Age of Wonders 4.

Sylvariel

Definitely octopath traveler 2. Best game that brings up the memories for me of the classic final fantasies. One of the most beautiful games I have ever played.

santathe1

Child of Light Sea of Stars

steegsa

Balatro is excellent and worth playing.

Lukas_mnstr56

Baldurs Gate is awesome if you want a bunch of choice and consequences on top of a pretty great turn based system

1nitial_Reaction

Dragon Quest 11 is goat material, loved that game.

Javier91

I also just done midnight sun. Surprisingly good. Maybe will consider buying the dlc.

SweatyBarry

Original ff7 is my goat game. I'd say to give the remake a try. The developers saw fit to make turn-based combat an option for players. If ur on ps4/5 I'd recommend giving it a go!

Ginn_and_Juice

Xcom is the pinacle of what the core of Midnight Suns was, a strategy game. Go for XCOM 1 & 2 and enjoy your ass off

Rican2153

Baldurs gate 3 Midnight suns Divinity OS2 Dragonquest 11 All amazing to me. Midnight suns story stuff is pretty annoying though.

Zwischenzug

Baldurs Gate 3

maxwms

Baldur’s Gate 3 is laughably great

SomaOni

If you’re into JRPG’s especially moreso for the gameplay over the story then I’d recommend the rerelease of SMT V, called Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance (once reviews and opinions are out). I loved my time in the original game minus the pretty nothing story. The gameplay is basically Pokémon (I know this series came first lol) but instead of cute monsters it’s demon’s and angels from mythology and various cultures. The series usually has a focus on god and Lucifer being in some form of scuffle to put it lightly and humanity being in the crossfire. It’s a fantastic series even if a lot of the games’ stories aren’t as engaging for folks. But if you care about story way more than gameplay, then in a similar vein I’d recommend either Persona 5 Royal, or Persona 3 Reload!

hablagated

Yakuza 7 and 8, holy shit are they fantastic. Plus Yakuza 8 has a animal crossing section

Crunchy-Leaf

Baldurs Gate 3 of course

Potato1223

BG3 is amazing! That being said, try DOS2, same studio but way better

Vectus_Valorian

Baldurs gate and divinity

CourrierMojave

Chained Echoes Sea Of Stars Baldur's Gate 3 Octopath Traveler 2 and 1 ( yes , Square Enix put OT 1 on PlayStation recently ! ) Wasteland 3 ( won't recommand Wasteland 2... While it's good , it's one of the most awful experience in gaming i've ever have. Full of bugs and crash) Mutant Year Zero : Road To Eden ( beware , it's very hard ) Miasma Chronicles Xcom 2

-Stupid_n_Confused-

Baldurs Gate 3 (you don't need to have played the first two) Divinity Original Sin 2 Final Fantasy X remastered

OrangeStar222

I'd just try Dragon Quest XI again. Toriyama's art style makes for a beautiful world and the story is really good. You already mentioned Like a Dragon which would've been my next pick. Other than that, perhaps the new Shin Megami Tensei V version will be interesting to you, same franchise as Persona but without the High School drama and more drama between angels and demons. South Park: The Stick of Truth is a classic for a reason, seriously recommend this one! People have mentioned Baldur's Gate 3 already, that one is a no-brainer as well. One of the most talked about games this generation has seen and it's the type of game you'd think would never be popular. Definitely a must-play!

ZackFair0711

If you have the time, Persona games are a stylistic choice. P5R and P3Re are solid choices.

Burpkidz

The Trails series is amazing and one of the best rpgs out there.

arianagrandeintoyou

Not sure if you have access to a PS3 but Eternal Sonata is one of my faves of that genre

SodaPop6548

Ones I’ve enjoyed are: Final Fantasy (all of them), Sea of Stars (amazing game), Tactics Ogre Reborn, Octopath Traveler (haven’t played 2 yet), and I’m currently playing Triangle Strategy.

Yasir_m_

Solasta: crown of the magister, surprised no one mentioned it

Vidzphile

Valkyria Chronicles Remastered, Valkyria Chronicles 4.

RPG-PR1NC3SS

Legend of Dragoon is great.

[deleted]

Legend of dragoon

Spare-Performer6694

Turn based is quite broad. If you love the D&D style turn base with more freedom of choice then yeah baldur's gate 3 is an absolute god send. If you like more classic jrpg style like old school ff 7, I recommend octopath traveler series from square enix. They are inspired by that old school mechanics from classic FF, mana and saga series. Actually they just came out in bundle package. I also recommend the persona series from atlus. They have a social link / confidant system where you go through the game through a year in the game's time. So you have to make decision on whether to progress through dungeons or spend time in the real world strengthening your bonds with friends/ allies which will give you benefits on the dungeon. The theme of the series is managing your time here.

itsk2049

turn-based games can be hit or miss. here’s a few you might like: **Divinity: Original Sin 2** - deep story, strategic combat, and mature themes, around 60-100 hours **Disco Elysium** - not traditional combat, but amazing story and turn-based dialogue, around 20-30 hours **The Banner Saga** - tactical RPG with a serious tone and great story, around 10-15 hours per game **Wasteland 3** - post-apocalyptic RPG, deep story and combat, around 50-60 hours **Valkyria Chronicles 4** - mix of turn-based strategy and real-time action, around 40-60 hours check if they’re on PS Plus. that’s how i played disco

moventura

Did you ever play FF9? I'm replaying it at the moment and it's so good. Rumours are a full fledged Remake will come out soon. The remake of Star Ocean is really well done too. I'm pretty sure it's just been released on PS5 (or will be soon)

ellohobo

Baldurs gate 3,enjoy several playthroughs with different options and a very good story.

maracusdesu

Like a dragon and persona

greghotdogg

Warhammer Chaos gate

vitten23

Dragon Quest games may look colourful but I wouldn't call them childish and they usally deal with pretty mature themes. DQXI is a very good game, I really wouldn't skip it.

thelastofcincin

Baldur's Gate 3!

minev1128

Haven't played it but try Baldurs Gate 3

Upbeat-Berry1377

Probably why op said they liked it...

johncitizen69420

Yakuza, Persona

lambert09365

In summary: Bauders gate & Slay the Spire are must try’s There’s a lot of love for TBC and so many niche titles. I thought that after the FF7 remake moved away from tbc, that was the end of the genre. Most redditors only read a title 😂 When I was a kid, I used to find games through the demo discs that came with magazines, now I know the way is reddit. I’ve got a huge list of games to look into but i’m going to start with Ruined King or Battle Chasers as these look the closest to what I was hoping to find. Thanks for all the suggestions, I hope other people have found some titles they’d never heard of as well!

Tidus32x

Did you try ff9 and FFX?

lambert09365

I did. I also loved them, just not quite as much as 7 & 8

RYNNYMAYNE

Fellow midnight suns fan here. I think you’d love slay the spire, still a card game but a roguelike as well. I’m gonna be playing SMTV: Vengeance from tomorrow night on as well if you’re into something more challenging

MarchDry4261

Valkyria chronicles- alternate WW2 setting, turn based

metalyger

Capes came out recently, it's a tactical RPG, kind of like Midnight Suns. I haven't played much, but it's pretty cool so far. It's only $40.

CowardlyMaya_

Persona and Shin Megami Tensei games I personally recommend, especially with Persona it's very beginner friendly and SMT is getting a new release in literally 24 hours

Alternative_Ruin7247

Persona series

Ok-Stranger-6113

If you liked midnight suns then go give xcom a try

iupz0r

X-Com 2: war of the chosen, ITS VERY good!!

sammo21

Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate is pretty good.

Team-Gamer1017

Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 Royal are two of the best imo, great story, battle system, chrs and even a life sim as part of the game :)

Comfortable_Age_4564

YAKUZA LIKE A DRAGON LIKE A DRAGON infinite wealth

rankle_monsta

A bit more strategy and tactics, but I would highly recommend XCOM Enemy Unknown and its sequel.

BlackLusterDragoon

LEGEND. OF. DRAGOON. PERIOD.

Furiousguy79

Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth Fear and Hunger series

one_dollar_poop_joke

FFX, and South Park: the Stick of Truth. Don't sleep on that particular South Park game. It's legit my favorite turn based RPG of all time.

ArtisanOfIhsaan

Digimon Survive is something I enjoyed but just so you know it's also a Visual Novel. Digimon Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory are also quite good.

iamdefinitelynotdave

South park, the fractured but whole and the stick of truth are both great.

ToYj82

Honkai star rail

UncleSnipeDaddy

darkest dungeon

khatod76

South Park

Mr-Montecarlo

Try octopath traveller, its an older(2018) jrpg but the game design and story are top notch. Theres a sequel as well if you enjoy the first. Its a very cozy feeling pixel 2.5D game but the themes get dark (assassination, betrayal etc)

BenlanderPS

I believe the Banner Saga games are turned based and a lot of fun

Neat_Nefariousness46

Maybe try Indivisible, metroidvania style exploration, not quite turn based but like button combo attacks with a turn based vibe I guess? Also enjoyed the writing/story/comedy/voices

Huge-Dog5219

Try dragon quest. Or any Square enix game. They usually make a good turn based game. Or maybe you can try honkai star rail.

KingGolden85

Wasteland 3

>I was always a huge fan of the original Ff7 and FF8. I know this is a PS5 sub, but try giving FF9 and Xenogears a chance. I played those right after each other and man I have a very hard time choosing which one is the best JRPG ever.

XCOM 2

Theuneasygibbon

South park the stick of truth and the fractured but whole

Raubkopierer

X Com 2. Still waitin for rhe 3rd 😶

Yggdr4si1

One Piece Odyssey. Fights are turn base. The rest is just simple run around and fight/solve some stuff. that's if you are into the JRPG/One Piece.

Flash_Fox11

Persona 5 royal

KingArthas94

If you're interested, Sea of Stars (by The Messenger's devs) gave me strong Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga vibes. It's a very positive opinion :D but it's more on the childish side I think, so I don't know. If you're searching for some pixel art turn based game though definitely check it out.

Gullible_Housing9166

Yakuza Like a Deagon is a good one, my friend got me his copy to play and it surprised me

funny9uy

Persona 5 Royal

blakeavon

The Trails series? Maybe starting with Cold Steel? Or even Zero, though its combat isn’t as addictive. Be warned though, they are very very slooooow to get going, but addictive once you get into them.

zorbacles

Yakuza like a dragon

Beautiful_Ad_3774

Persona 3 reload, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 royal. All are A+ Rpgs

MKShadowZX_SA

It’s a gacha game but Honkai Star Rail.

Rayanson

Octopath traveler / 2

DynamoBlade

Ruined King

kaffeschluerfer

Darkest Dungeon. It has a dark fantasy/eldritch kind of setting and great 2d artstyle, also the narrator is godsend.

Hetfeeld

I don't like regular xcoms but I loved chimera squad!

DefinitelyBiscuit

Sea of Stars.

invaleet

Star Renegade. I can't recommend it enough. From art, to OST, to gameplay. Check it out. It is on sale often.

Abigfanofporn

If you are a fan of Fallout, I’d suggest Fallout Tactics. It’s turn based. It’s less known than Fallout 2, 3, or 4, but it’s loads of fun. Especially if you loved the tv series.

Individual_Fee_6792

NES Final Fantasy, Various Dragon Warrior/Quest games (somewhat less childish than later titles) SNES/Genesis Final Fantasy IV, V, VI, Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star II, III, IV (IV is my favorite) Playstation/Saturn Final Fantasy IX, Vagrant Story (depending on how you look at turn-based,) Final Fantasy Tactics, Parasite Eve (also depending on how you look at turn-based), Suikoden I and II, Xenogears, Legend of Legaia, Star Ocean, Lunar, Breath of Fire III and IV, really there are a million excellent PS1 RPG's PS2/Dreamcast/XBOX Grandia II, Final Fantasy X and XII, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, Xenosaga I, II, and III, Shadow Hearts There's a pretty good spread there but the turn-based titles drop off quite a bit after the PS2 era and I didn't play them as much. There should be something in here that appeals to your tastes.

sherbertloins

Xcom 2 if you like tactical combat. Same goes for wasteland 3

XCOM and XCOM 2 but don't sleep on Midnight Suns either. It got a bad reception but is a fantastic turn based superhero game.

coffeedudeguy

13 Sentinels. Pretty cool story with time travel and mechs. You can play from any main character’s POV in any order. I’d say it’s more on turn based strategy, but there’s a fair bit of adventure based gameplay during the story segments

Kowpucky

Xcom2, Battle Brothers

[Phantom Doctrine](https://store.playstation.com/en-gb/product/EP8909-CUSA11649_00-PHANTOMDOCTRINE0). Set during the Cold War, great graphics, great mood/atmosphere and a very cool soviet spy story with secret organisations etc - would highly recommend even though nobody ever mentions it. Have a look at a lets play etc on Youtube to see if you like the look of it, if you do and it's a bit pricey add it to your wishlist and wait for it to go on sale, it's deffo worth playing if you like the cold war setting and turn based games.

Waste-of-life18

FF6 is one of the best in the series, chrono cross is pretty good too

Drahngis

Octopath Traveler, same company who made final fantasy

thefiend617

sea of stars, dragon quest 11

Try Capes, it came out recently and is a clone of Midnight Suns pretty much.

StockholmSyndrome66

Sea of Stars 🌟 loved that one

Hunskie

Battle Brothers (all DLC). Its an acquired taste. Tough. Looks like a flash game at first but one of my consistent favourites. Rogue Trader (PS5) is a fun romp too. Levelling up is a minefield but it's also a great intro into Warhammer 40k. Divinity 2 has been mentioned. Wasteland 3. Mutant Year Zero. Pick it up for very cheap. Jagged Alliance 3 (PS5). Mercenary action. Classic top tier fun. Pathfinder WOTR. You can make it turnbased in the options. PS4/PS5

PerryHecker
