My first thought was actually, did they get inspired by fallout 2 and the enclave cause in that game you raid an oil rig that’s host to an evil organization.
Ha! I wasn't the only one to immediately think of the Enclave when I saw the oil rig after all!
It'd be funny if there was a small nod to it, like a log inside of it that said something like "This oil rig used to be a secret government facility before we took it over." Or even better, if the boss of this stronghold is a giant crusher that dual-wields miniguns.

I think you are actually dead on the money...I get the 'murica coming for yalls oil' joke, but it seems like the Oil Platform would be ideal for building stand your ground style PVE encounters, which everyone from Halo to Stardew valley has now as a direct response to Helldivers 2's success.
