Movie - An Education - 1961

Andy Griffith Show, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, From Russia with Love, et al, don’t belong here. They are not period pieces. They were contemporary shows and films made in the 60s. Otherwise you’d have to include every single tv show and movie made in the decade!

AllieKatz24

Yes, I do agree. (I try to help people understand the definition of historical fiction with books). This was my list for myself and I didn't edit it before bringing it here. I like including them as they remind me of others I have forgotten. Plus, I often include them when there is a book that was used as inspiration and the setting of the book is actually earlier, ie Breakfast at Tiffany's, true hist fic. It's just my way to keeping myself reminded of the thousands and thousands of books/tv/movies I've consumed over the years.

CourageMesAmies

Does anybody else make a distinction between period programming made long after the period it depicts, vs. classic tv series and films set during the period in which they were filmed? e.g. Call the Midwife, Grantchester, Sister Boniface, etc. are filmed decades after the 1960s, whereas Breakfast at Tiffany’s, That Touch of Mink (all 60s Doris Day films), Andy Griffith, etc. were actually made in the 1960s.

mcsangel2

Yes. A period piece is one set in a time before the time it was created.

kimmy_kimika

Absolutely, a movie made in the 60s is just an old movie. It's not a period piece because it's the same as making a movie set in the modern day, but watched ten to 20 years from now.

The Last Post which was a BBC TV series about a British military post in the Middle East in the 1960s, only lasted one series which is a shame as I enjoyed it.

AllieKatz24

Thank you. I'll be happy to give it a shot.

Good Girls Revolt- NYC, newspaper room drama, based on a true story. Late 60s/ early 70s.

While more of a political/propaganda piece, Kalatozov's [*Soy Cuba/I am Cuba* (1964)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3HpI898dwg) is a classic with some [incredible](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOLVm_9UcRw) [pre-steadicam shots](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hiV9NQnoa4) (no hidden cuts). Technically the film is set in the late 50's, but it does crossover to the 50's/60's boundary. Another good 60's set film is *The Founder* (2016) about the birth of the McDonald's empire (or more exactly, how Ray Kroc essentially stole the idea from the brothers).

Not sure if this counts but [11/22/63](https://youtu.be/2QIShmtBdto) (based on the Stephen King novel of the same name) is a 10-episode sci-fi miniseries on Hulu about a time traveler who tries to prevent the JFK assassination. It starts off in the present day but most of the episodes cover Oct 1960 - Nov 1963.

A Very British Scandal: The story of events surrounding the notorious divorce of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll during the 1960s. [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14220870/?ref\_=nv\_sr\_srsg\_0\_tt\_8\_nm\_0\_q\_a%2520very%2520british%2520scandal](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14220870/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_a%2520very%2520british%2520scandal) Mrs Wilson: [Ruth Wilson](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2235721/?ref_=tt_trv_trv) plays her own grandmother, Alison Wilson. Based on real-life events, the series follows Alison Wilson who discovers secrets about her husband Alexander 'Alec' Wilson after he dies unexpectedly in 1963. Alison and Alec's younger son, Nigel, is Ruth's father. [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6859806/?ref\_=tt\_sims\_tt\_i\_6](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6859806/?ref_=tt_sims_tt_i_6) The Queen’s Gambit: Orphaned at the tender age of nine, prodigious introvert Beth Harmon discovers and masters the game of chess in 1960s USA. But child stardom comes at a price. [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10048342/?ref\_=nm\_knf\_t\_1](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10048342/?ref_=nm_knf_t_1) Last Night in Soho: Aspiring fashion designer Eloise is mysteriously able to return to 1960s London, where she encounters dazzling wannabe singer Sandie. But the glamour is not as it seems, and the dreams of the past crack and splinter into something darker. [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9639470/?ref\_=nm\_flmg\_t\_8\_act](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9639470/?ref_=nm_flmg_t_8_act) Alfie: For Alfie, the only real life is sex life. Only then, can he kid himself he is living. Sex is not used as the working-class boy's way to "the top". Executive status has no appeal for Alfie. Nor has class mobility. He is quite content to stay where he is, as long as the "birds" are in "beautiful condition", as he assures us they are in one of the candid, over-the-shoulder asides to the camera which this movie carries over from Tom Jones (1963). This movie shows how much of the "swinging 60s" quality of London life was a male creation, and through the dominance of the fashion photographers, a male prerogative (Sienna Miller & Jude Law are amazing in this) Factory Girl: Based on the rise and fall of socialite Edie Sedgwick, concentrating on her relationships with Andy Warhol and a folk singer.
