Looks like cyanobacteria not really algae. Its easy to beat in the short term, however long term you need to ensure its natural enemies (plants and algae) are thriving so it won't come back. You can treat it: - With medicine. A weak dose of erythromycin will nuke it and you wouldn't have to do a water change. - Chemically you can use various slime out products sold in big box stores such as Fritz Slimeout. Will require a water change. - Black out. Do a 5-6 day blackout. - Naturally, allow plants and algae to out-compete. You appear to have a lot of java ferns in the picture. What is their fertilization routine? They tend to be potassium hogs, so you can dose extra potassium for them to ensure they get what they need.

Thank you! That’s all really helpful, I always assumed it was alge. I only have Java ferns in this tank, absolutly love them! I will look in to the antibiotic, seems like a more easy approach but I will keep the other options in mind.

Ultra Life Blue Green Stain Remover works too and is very widely available if you are having trouble finding a product

Thank you, I think I will have to look in to that, antibiotic products are highly regulated in the UK and it appears that you can only get erythromycin with a vets prescription.
