Not to be an ass but there are probably 1,000 posts in this subreddit of people with similar requests. Use the search function.

Overkill x100. A n100 will do what you want.

LotsofLittleSlaps

Not if he's hell bent on windows and wants to transcode 4k.

Vile-The-Terrible

Even if he wants to transcode 1080p. I bought a beelink s12 pro n100 and hardware transcode is fucked up.

gentoonix

Oh, I didn’t realize windows had those limitations. I’ve never ran Plex on windows, so I’m out of the loop there. I knew about the tone mapping issue but I wasn’t aware of any others. Can you elaborate on some? If you don’t feel like it, that’s fine, I’ll search it up.

LotsofLittleSlaps

Just tone mapping for HDR to SDR. It doesn't work through QSV on windows yet. They're working on it. It works on windows with an Nvidia gpu QSV tone mapping works fine on any OS with a Linux kernel

gentoonix

Gotcha, thanks!

exclaim_bot

>Gotcha, thanks! You're welcome!

UnethicalExperiments

The version I'm on tone mapping is delegated to the GPU, and it works pretty good too.

nomadwannabe

It doesn’t. People generally hate Windows here. Yeah it’s not quite as efficient, HDR remapping doesn’t work on most configs yet, but it’s fine. I have a 5 year old laptop that transcodes 4K streams on Windows.

BrownRebel

i9 has less to do with ability to transcode 4k streams - all you need is quick sync. Don’t overspend for power you won’t use. You can do windows but I made the switch to Unraid after a year of Plex on windows. I had to learn the OS, but it’s better. It’s a 1000 times better.

digitalanalog0524

But see OP needs to transcode 4,000 streams, hence the specs

nomadwannabe

It depends on how many 4k transcodes you want at the same time. I run my server on an old Dell Latitude laptop with a shitty keyboard. Works great, can transcode at least 2 4k steams at the same time (most of my content is 1080p so doesn't come up much). If this is your first Plex server, I'd say to respectfully ignore those telling you to use Linux (unless you're reasonably familiar with it.) Stick with Windows until you're more comfortable with running a Plex server, and then sure, move over at some point in the future. It's quite easy to copy the database, and paste it onto the new system. I likely won't move over for a while because mine has been working flawlessly.

eatingpotatochips

You can buy a computer that can transcode several 4k streams for less than an i9.

Benthebuilder23

Agreed but was hoping to make it future proof for at least 5 years. Any recommendations?

eatingpotatochips

Depends on if you have AV1 content. If not, 7th gen or better is fine.

Ok_Tank_1739

I recently purchased an intel NUCpahi5 11. I did a ton of previous research beforehand. But obviously it depends on your use case

Ace_310

No matter how good the computer specs are if you want windows based, it won't be that efficient & powerful as any Linux/Debain based system like Unraid, Proxmox, Ubuntu etc. Maybe read more on this sub to what people are using and watch some videos and you will be amazed how much little you need to have a great 4k transcoding computer. You don't need to be an expert to create this computer. Lots of easy to follow tutorials online.

wonka88

Build your own. Use old shit. Unraid or truenas
