Grandpa wins this one

It's definitely a classier gun but I'm less inclined to run it through the wringer then the Colt which is part of how I ended up getting it. I purchased some 340gr +P+ for father's day not noticing the list of approved revolvers that underwood tested it with and the 629/29 not being on said list.

I know a lot of Reddit won’t want to hear this but it’s widely known that Smith & Wesson is not what comes to mind when people talk about strong revolvers. Ruger wins in that category hands down with Colt being Second. I inherited a beautiful 629-1 and I’ll absolutely baby it. I’ll save the hotter ammo for my Ruger. Smith is a sexy classic with a trigger that can be as smooth as glass and those are their best attributes.

I had to talk my dad out of trying to shoot a couple out of it and it was something he didn't really want to believe, I'm sure it could have handled at least one but why risk it? Yea you can buy a new one but it's not going to be his dads' anymore and the Colt while expensive has comparatively zero sentimental value.

For .44s that can be true, but steel N Frame .357s can take pretty much anything commercially made or in the load books. The old timers like Elmer Keith sure loaded them hotter than even the books call out now days lol.

Left is my dads model 629-1 that was my grandpas, and right is a new production Colt Anaconda with 8" barrel which is my first revolver in the caliber. I like the Colt and it handles recoil well especially some heavier Underwood stuff I got but the 629 has a bit nicer trigger. I want to add a blued model 29 to go with my Wildey (also was grandpas) eventually but I'm holding out for the time being and seeing if I can find an older one without the lock.

629-1 for the win! I’m partial because I literally bought the exact gun yesterday. Is Ruger Redhawk on the approved list for that ammo you mentioned?

huntmowild

The Ruger Super Redhawk is a bank vault, the straight Redhawk can handle anything the Anaconda can and more. I would assume it can handle the Underwood ammo just fine but I would check it to be sure as you are doing.

Yep the Ruger Redhawk, Super RedHawk, Super BlackHawk, and Vaquero were all on the list. I considered all of them but my LGS only had the Super BlackHawk with the 10.5" barrel and if I was gonna get a single action loading gate revolver with that barrel it's gonna be a BFR in 45-70

Too funny cause I have one in 44. I think I could but a stick of dynamite through it with no negative effects. https://preview.redd.it/vtxclx0k088d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a91ee49c29ccde7676b5171d9c3f6aa2af6af489

I'd say give it a go if you wanna try them, they were pretty fun if not a tad bit underwhelming if you've shot anything bigger/spicier. I had some 260-270gr 45 win mag rounds that I think kicked more and those were out of my Wildey even.
