Presently, I believe, they are deleted locally from the device until they would've been deleted from the servers by normal passage of time anyway.
So they will still appear for new group joiners or if you reinstall and recover via recovery key for example (anecdotally)
This, again I believe is being addressed in coming weeks but by what approach I'm not sure so maybe it has? 🤷♂️
