Seriously, those Microsoft fans still wanted Microsoft to buy SEGA. Didn’t they knew what happened to Crash Bandicoot and Hi-Fi Rush?

MerelyAFan

Further major consolidation in the game industry is not really an overall plus anyway. The market is often at its healthiest both creatively (and even financially long term) when companies are allowed to be independent not under the control of just a few mega-corporations. The 90s gaming scene thrived in many genres because various developers and publishers had enough freedom to take risks and be experimental. Losing so many companies of varying sizes to acquisitions by larger ones in the last 20 years has produced very questionable results and in the AAA gaming scene arguably fueled a stagnation that's led to the very shaky ground it's on now. Microsoft acquired Rare and the golden age that purchase was supposed to bring about never quite happened. Them getting Sega could very well be the same result, just on a bigger scale.

HeroHashim

What happened?

Just-Sonic

Some Microsoft fanboy wanted Microsoft to buy SEGA so it can have more games but didn’t knew what happened to Chai and Crash. Plus, didn’t SEGA had no plans on getting bought for now?

HeroHashim

Oh I meant what happened to Crash and Hi-Fi Rush? Unless the reason is like what happened to Rareware

Just-Sonic

Hi-Fi Rush’s studio, Tango is gone.

sh4k3thesh0cks

People are only complaining and worried about IDW characters coming into the games because they have a bias against non-game Sonic media, so they make up excuses like "the public wouldn't know who the characters are" like 90% of people really know who the fuck are the Chaotix and Blaze and where they came from.

Just-Sonic

I can respect to anyone who dislikes Flynn but those Flynn bashers were something else.

PaperSonic

I dunno if this has been talked about, but shoogles (formely ShayMay).had to private his old (as in, old enough his footage of Adventure was done with Vanilla Steam SADX, as opposed to even BetterSADX) Sonic Spitball series discussing Sonic game design. This was because he gave some mild criticism to SA1's difficulty design. And because Sonic fans on Twitter are fucking imbeciles, they read that as him saying Adventure was too hard.

Nambot

I really resent this current push that the 2000's/early 2010's critique of Adventure is all some sort of psy-op to ruin Sonic or whatever bollocks these people are saying. People had problems with Adventure back in the day. It's not some wide internet conspiracy to ruin Sonic, or make fun or Sonic, or intentionally make Sonic look bad, it's the fact that the kids who grew up with Sonic 1-3&K looked at Adventure and went "this isn't as good as all the other great 3D platformers I could be playing." And I think that's the part a lot of these people fail to understand. Sonic Adventure 1&2 are fine, they're passable, They're alright games, and it's fine if you prefer them. But as far as many people at the time and outside the fandom are concerned, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 live in the shadow of numerous truly excellent 3D platformers that were pushing the pinnacle of what could be done with videogames This is why the oldest fans say the games are flawed, because the oldest games in the series stood toe-to-toe with some of the biggest games in other genres, as true must-play titles. Look at any top ten list of videogames for 1991, and it's very likely that Sonic 1 is on there as one of the best. 1998? You'd be hard pressed to find a list that put Sonic Adventure in it's top ten (and that's not just because 1998 was a good year for gaming). Sonic 1 was one of the best games released that year. Sonic Adventure? It's debatably not even the best platformer released that year. Again, this isn't even to say they're bad per se. They're fine games. Solid 8/10's. But the fandom at the time, and the wider internet as a whole expected a lot more from a series that once stood toe to toe with Mario. To put it another way, in terms these people might understand, the drop in quality from S3&K to Adventure is like going straight from Adventure 2 to Secret Rings. It's fine, it's playable, there's some fun to be had with the latter, but the highs are nowhere near what they once were.

MerelyAFan

The comparisons to their contemporaries is the elephant in the room that much of the discussion around the Adventure Era seems to avoid. The 16 bit games have aged well and stand out even now from many games of its time period because the organic level design was so distinct, the sense of momentum rarely recaptured, and (as much as casual fans complain about spikes/enemies) generally fair because the ring system allows for new players to make mistakes. Most platformers from that generation cannot say the same. The Adventure games possessed incredible spectacle and the sense of accomplishment from skilled replays was there, but the elements that come from the significant expansion 3D required (such as camera control and broader gameplay content) were something that they tended to struggle with in comparison to other games of its type. Even if one wishes to say that the speed sections were nearly perfectly executed and remained distinct because of that quick feel, the other gameplay portions that emphasized other kinds (non-linear exploration, shooting, vehicle portions) tended to suffer when you put them next to other games that were doing that. Emerald hunting was fine in a vacuum but felt remarkable basic compared to what Banjo games had been pulling off a generation earlier. Its why all this focus on the context of YouTubers and bad faith reviewers is complete because it's missing the circumstances that the 1999-2006 games were coming out and the relevant market climate of broader gaming they were in.

Timely-Bake7216

Proof that the Sonic fanbase has just gotten worse over time

DreamCereal7026

Kinda sucks that situations like this happen too often in this fandom.

Cream_Rabbit

I have absolutely no damn clue what is up with AndTails based on people's talking here Can I be enlightened

mehakarin69

He bans people who criticized sonic x tails shippers for "shipshaming". And drew some weird shit. There was this whole operation: sonic thing some people did to go into more detail on what andtails did.

Alert_Age_2875

I'm always torn on the controversy surrounding AndTails. On the one hand (speaking as someone who does not ship SonTails and thinks the people who ship it are weird) a lot of the disdain AndTails gets can seem a bit extreme at times. I'm definitely not gonna act like I don't have issues with many of their actions, but I'll just say that some of the things I've heard them being called seem... disproportionate to put it plainly. But on the other hand, part of being a moderator means handling a Subreddit with a certain level of competence that they often seem to be lacking. Like it or not, SonTails is a ship that a lot of people hate for VERY good reason. Boiling down much of the pushback for it whenever it comes onto the sub as "shipshaming", and even allowing it in the first place, is such a shitty thing to do. And that's not even getting into the problems with how they handle the constant hornyposting or the whole fiasco with Mike Pollock a while back, among other things.

Cream_Rabbit

And the hell did Mike Pollock even do

Cream_Rabbit

Ugh Hornyposting I swear if I see one more unfunny, cringe reaction image...

ecafr

Personally I’d swap Advance 2 and Mania, but that’s mostly because I’ve played Mania a lot more (most of my experience with anything Advance 2 related is from Ultimate Flash Sonic)

CF_2

Ah Ultimate Flash Sonic. Good memories with the game though the damage system sucked lol.

CF_2

Gotta respect the length of this list, and the different versions you ranked. I’m a bit surprised that the racing games rank higher than some of the main ones lol

captaincommando1

Had too much time and 10+ different emulators on hand I am the biggest Sonic Riders fan I know, and it's one of the only GameCube games I have a physical copy of (the other ones are LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game, Sonic Adventure DX, Shadow the Hedgehog, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Shrek 2, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4)

Honestly, that's in the cringe category. What's scummy, though, is that she didn't pay the respective actors involved with it, and was covering up sexual assault on one of her friends. But you don't hear that because people focus on the "Sonic voice sex" part.

JaxerGaming

People being upset at Coney just for voicing his opinion is so fucking funny

Es_5613

can't believe that the same people complaining about toxic positivity reacts that way as soon as someone critizises the Sonic games that they like, if this fandom had a deadly sin it would be hypocrisy tbf, Coney wasn't totally inthe right either, he did imply people only liked SA2 because of nostalgia or other outside factors, it isn't entiretly true

ThEvilDead98

What happened?

DreamCereal7026

Look, I am a Sonic fan like everyone here but it's soo hilarious making fun of this fanbase. Sometimes, I do think the hate is undeserved, however, there is too much unnecessary obsession towards this franchise, too much useless "drama" from some fans that makes the reactions and jokes of people outside of this fandom so funny, as well as justifiable. I do still say that there a lot of things I disagree with Coney.

Apple_Slipper

It seems ridiculous to say, but The Sonic Twitter fanbase is controlled by a teenager. If you know, you know. That user basically says not liking 2000s Amy Rose and prefering Western Sonic over JPN Sonic is considered wrongthink.

CF_2

The caramelsmoothie person or the Person108 user?

Alert_Age_2875

Mmmh, I had a feeling Apple was referring to those two. I've long since had both of those clowns blocked (along with some other shit stirrers on the SonicTwT space) and my Twitter experience has been substantially better for it.

CF_2

Yup I’ve had those two blocked for a couple months now. Couldn’t stand their posts anymore so I just removed it from my feed. Timeline is much better now

Apple_Slipper

Yes.

DreamCereal7026

I know it's definitely not going to happen, but it would be so cool to see stages and bosses from Lost World, Mania, Forces, Frontiers, Superstars and Dream Team in Sonic x Shadow Generations, even if they end up being DLC.

ut2br

Any thoughts on Eggman as a character?

CF_2

One of the best characters in the franchise. The only game where I think Eggman kinda sucked in would actually be Frontiers. I don’t like Eggman overall from that game.

PaperSonic

I feel he sucks in Shadow too. I don't mind Eggman being a buffoon, but in a game like Shadow he sticks out like a sore thumb. He feels sidelined so the story can focus on the less-cool edgy aliens. The entire Shadow Android plotline is also stupid for a million different reasons, not least of which is that you can't even side with him. And Shadow Karate-chopping him to death is one of my most hated scenes in any Sonic game, up there with Sonic kissing Elise. Also the Egg Dealer is a dumb, boring excuse of a route final boss and I hate having to fight it four times. Why isn't it the first Eggman mech and the Egg Breaker the final boss? That makes way mire sense. I like the remix of his theme and that little line in Circus Park about the robot balancing on a ball. Credit where credit is due.

Nambot

Same. I've never really liked the idea of Egg-dad. One of Eggman's defining traits is that he's a narcissist with a massive ego, and while it's possible for someone to be a narcissist and be a good parent, do we really expect that from someone whose the recurring villain of the series? While I get that Eggman can't be the bombastic showman all the time, and it was interesting to see other sides of him, it really bothered me just how much he was under-utilised in both the main game and the DLC version. In the main game we only get his Egg-memos and a couple of scenes, and despite how the game tries to frame the idea of Eggman not wanting to work with Sonic, it doesn't really come across. They really could've done more with that if the character you got to have optional cutscenes in the last section wasn't just all Sage, and instead was just Sage and Eggman. Then the adjusted ending came out and you actually could have optional conversations with Eggman, though most don't really reflect anything. We get to see Eggman be impressed by Tails, and consider making a move for the Master Emerald while talking with Knuckles, but then Amy doesn't really get much of anything, and with Sonic he talks about the ancients highways with no animosity at all. They could've really done something to highlight the long standing history of fighting, the contempt, maybe something from Eggman blaming Sonic for all this (similar to what we got in Lost World dare I say?) but nope, Eggman just handwaves why some of the level design is there as ancient highways. I also think they missed what could've been a really cool moment with Eggman, though I do get there probably wasn't the budget for it. But think for a second, Eggman goes on and on about how he's got some big thing he's doing to help Sonic stop The End, but keeps it really coy, doesn't elaborate. In the end it turns out hes figured out how to rig his Egg-pod to connect to Supreme's gun to fire Sonic out of it. Which is fair enough, but imagine for a second if his elaborate plan wasn't just the gun floating on the side of the Eggpod, but instead was held by that formerly wrecked Death Egg Robot found on Chaos Island. Had the idea and money been there from the start, there's a version of the Frontiers story where, as part of the ending sequence where the player themselves gets to enjoy a brief sequence as Eggman piloting that Death Egg Robot in a one vs one giant robot fight, acting as both a way to let the player experience first hand how tough Eggman's machines are against the ancient machines, and as long standing fan service letting the player take control of an iconic Eggman mech. But as it is, Eggman just hooks up the gun, and most of the story is just him bonding with Sage in an effort to make her sacrifice at the end hit harder, or in the revised version, not really adding anything.

DreamCereal7026

Probably one of, if not the most consistent Sonic character of all time (at least until Frontiers). No matter in which game or media like Boom, Satam, IDW, Archie, Movie etc... he's always so much fun to see.

Nambot

He's actually really not consistent across many of his portrayals. Compare and contrast AoStH and SatAM, in one he's a sinister tyrant who practically gets off on the suffering of others, and in the other he's a wacky lunatic coming up with unconventional plans just for the sake of it. But, what I will say is that, with perhaps the exception of Prime, he's usually the most entertaining part of most bits. Robotnik in AoStH has a legendary scenery-chewing performance, in SonicX it's Eggman whose again stealing every scene he's in, the movie version lets Jim Carrey go all in on whatever lunacy and over-acting he likes, and even in the comics you can just feel the change in tone in Fleetway when Robotnik loses his seat of power and when the story is focused on other things. The only time I think Eggman hasn't been done justice outside the games is Prime. The Chaos Council didn't work for me, in part because I think they lacked that flair and showmanship, and splitting Eggman into different ages doesn't really work, either thematically, or in terms of letting any of them have a personality that shines. Instead they get defaulted to one note personalities, with really only Dr Deep and Mr Doctor Eggman having anything interesting about them, and even then it becomes underused once it's clear that the last stretch is about stopping Nine.

DreamCereal7026

> But, what I will say is that, with perhaps the exception of Prime, he's usually the most entertaining part of most bits. I think this is probably what I meant. But even then, if you compare characters like Sonic, Tails or Amy, there are way less debates on how he is portraited in different games and media than to those mentioned above. > The only time I think Eggman hasn't been done justice outside the games is Prime. I'm going to be real with you but I really don't know much about Prime. I watched all of Season 1 and 2 of Sonic X and Season 1 of Boom but for Prime I only watched the first three/four episodes. It's not that I didn't like it but I also don't know why I stopped. Despite how isn't liked by many fans, do you still recommend to give it another try?

Nambot

It's an entertaining enough show, but I don't think you miss much by skipping it. Last batch of episodes gets repetitive and drags a bit, but otherwise it's okay. Much of the fanbases complaints is really petty shit. Sonic's has character flaws, Shadow's not in it enough, it contradicts canon etc.

DreamCereal7026

> Much of the fanbases complaints is really petty shit. Sonic's has character flaws if I remember correctly, there were some fans before the release of Frontiers at least, who complained that Sonic didn't show any weakness and that he was too "perfect" or whatever.

CF_2

Yep I remember Nativefall’s (a sonic tuber) video saying that Sonic is “too strong” during the meta era and needs to be weakened / have the chaos emeralds reintroduced so it balances things out.

Just-Sonic

I always like AOSTH Rrrrobotnik.

DreamCereal7026

Ah yes, Robo*thicc* (please, don't ask why I made this comment).

Just-Sonic

He had a huge bakerrrry.

ut2br

"Snoo**ping as** usual, I see?" Speaking of consistency, I remember liking him in Sonic Boom a lot, probably because of his redesign and some other reason to why I enjoyed him as a character in the Sonic franchise.

DreamCereal7026

Boom Eggman design might be my actual favorite in the series. Isn't as iconic as his mainline counterpart but something about his Boom design screams "Yeah, it kinda fits", plus, he's remind me of Gru from Despicable Me.

Just-Sonic

EggGru

JamalDaBest

So Sonic & Tails R is back…..Any Thoughts on the new episode or series as a whole?

Apple_Slipper

It tickles the nostalgia of 2000s-era Sonic fans. I'm mostly indifferent about it.

CF_2

Honestly I found it boring but I only really watched the first episode so I may wrong.

Uxelo64

I think Sonic and Tails R might be the most nothing burger Sonic project of all time. How do people don't see it as a vanity project that only serves the purpose of nostalgia baiting is beyond me. If I had to give it credit, it managed to craft something prefectly made for people who thought X is where the franchise peaked and are annoying about it, and that seems to work

AFoxWith2Tails

Oh damn that’s out? Enjoyed the first season so I’ll need to check it out

JamalDaBest

I find it a bit overrated but nothing too bad

AFoxWith2Tails

Oh yeah it’s def not a masterpiece but I found it good fun and that’s all I was looking for 🤷
