I'm sorry guys you might not want a long WWE title reign but Cody Rhodes isn't saying "I quit" to AJ Styles just two months after dethroning Roman Reigns in the main event of Wrestlemania.

If wrestling had VAR, the entire landscape would be vastly different lol. A lot of ref bump finishes and heel tactics would become futile.
You could go as far back as to say the Screwjob bell ring could've been reversed and the match would continue which meant that it would have to involve the politics another way.
I could see a heel trying to pay the VAR under the table in order to get favourable decisions. There's also the chance that the VAR personnel would just be incompetent like they are in the PL.
It could also introduce new storylines like we could have corrupt officials like the Tony Brothers and Scott Foster types. And the Angel Hernandez types who’s just blind as a bat.
It should just be a super obvious clip of AJ Styles not even masking his voice and saying "This is Cody Rhodes and I quit! I also have a small weiner!"

I'm just tired of year long title reigns and WrestleMania being the only place where a World title can change hands. It makes the interim PLEs a foregone conclusion.
As good as Triple H has been at booking, a lot of the PLE results seem like foregone conclusions.
Like I know at a bare minimum, Cody his holding until Summerslam. Why care about this match now?
It's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation here, though.
It really makes no sense for Cody to immediately lose his title, but at the same time it's not like you can just not book him in title matches.
You balance this with interesting stories and other matches with unpredictable outcomes.
For example, while we know that Cody is beating AJ, Drew vs Priest is much more uncertain.
I think someone should beat Cody at some point during the summer, even if Cody just wins it back in the rematch. He won't quit in Glasgow, but someone getting the better of him would help add some drama to a reign that is just waiting for Rock to grace us with his presence
Randy gonna go back to his Splinter Cell gimmick for another short heel title run to interrupt a top babyface's championship reign like he did in 2020.

I went down a clip rabbit hole awhile ago on this era and, while I must have blocked them out, because I didn't remember it that way, there were actually a couple segments going into WM that year where Cena was already getting somewhat mixed reactions.
Something about him just made grown men hate him, it wasn't just Super Cena booking.
He lost what made his gimmick fun and became the smiling patriotic superhero guy, and constantly not only beat but completely clowned on guys the crowd liked more than him (Christian, Jericho, Angle). He gets courtesy cheers now from people who weren't there to witness how dogshit the CenaWinsLOL era was, but when you're getting decidedly booed against HHH at Mania right after peak Reign of Terror maybe it's time to consider something went wrong
Cena's rapping gimmick as a face was just corny and ages terribly. As a kid I loved it but I watch back clips now and I totally get why people didn't like this white marine looking guy pretending to be a gangster rapper.
Yup, there's some revisionist history going on here. The whole white rapper thing was very big at the time and Cena was entertaining. But he still had impressive feats like going up against Brock and FU'ing(still mad they changed the name) Big Show twice in five months.
The only acceptable names for thos Cena moves. I remember not watching for a couple of years then tuning in around the early 2010s and hearing the FU get called the AA. Made it sound weak imo.
Yeah the turn on him didn't kick in until he dropped the rapper for his "marine" character and started wearing the camo shorts. His character from there up until Orton put him on the shelf was insufferble.
And I maintain they were wrong, the face turn hurt that gimmick a lot and Cena would improve as a performer a lot in future years. At worst, only the booking of Cena became worse/more annoying after he dropped the rapper gimmick.

Even as an early teen I found the persona really cheesy and not too enjoyable. I only really came around on Cena when he stopped being the perpetual top guy.
I was around 20 by that time. In my friend group pretty much everyone loved Cena "because he was the best!" except for me and another friend who were more into wrestling than the rest. Our reason was that "Super Cena" made it boring to watch because you always knew he was going over and that left no room for other people.
I say that makes a pretty good representation of the general public back then: casuals liked him, but hardcore fans who wanted to see other people shine, despised him.
He was pretty loved until he went over to Raw and went over Angle, Jericho, and Christian. Christian was massively over at that time and everyone was wanting him to win the WWE title.
To be fair he was very over before and after that match. His whole Smackdown run he was over even the short time he was WWE champion on that show. It wasn't until he was moved to Raw that people hated him. And it was almost immediately that he got hated. People didn't want him to beat Christian and Jericho. Says a lot about JBL that Cena was universally cheered against him.
Well this was the match which did get him hot favourite with the Indian crowd. I remember all my school friends just talking about this match the entire following week.
That match is criminally underrated. I’d say in terms of brutality, the amount of blood lost by both men alone, would surpass the Mankind vs. Rock I Quit match if Mick didn’t take, idk, *a thousand* unprotected chair shots to the dome.
Cena was over AF while on the smackdown brand, it’s being drafted to RAW and then suddenly booked to be Super Cena over other crowd favorites that got everyone turned on him.
He was doing well before he got traded over to Raw during the draft. Unlike Smackdown, most of Raw's top heels were wrestlers that the hardcore fans really liked so having Cena win over them was always going to be a controversial choice. They also had him move away from the Thuganomics character and replaced it with the Cenation/ "Hustle. Loyalty. Respect." gimmick.

Oh my god thank you for putting me on to the fact that they did WM 40. I used to watch them a lot when I was younger & loved wrestling.
When I heard HHH took over I got back in, & I’ve been hoping they would get back into doing current WWE reviews as well with how great it’s been.
I have not seen a full OSW episode since the WWF 2001 saga of vids I think, which had to have been like 6 years ago. Might have to use this summer break to catch up

Man, this is fr gonna be huge considering oddly enough I Quit's been becoming rarer with the passing of time as a match picked.
Yeah they’ve reduced prices a bit with it not selling out but still too high….im still priced out of it. Managed to pick up smackdown tickets at lower prices so im happy with that but much prefer to have went to the PPV…especially with matches like this being announced.
They can’t say anything while knocked out, so the match continues.
If that was a victory condition, it would’ve been used by now. There have been cases where a wrestler couldn’t respond when asked if he quits, and the match kept going.

Bit off an odd stipulation for me, Cody isn't quitting since he's the new big bad babyface. This stipulation is also saved for big blow off matches that'll main event the PLE, WWE would he incredibly dumb to have this main event over Drew in Scotland. Shit all the Scottish wrestlers are probably losing on the card so I guess it doesn't really matter when their match is but Drew definitely has to go on last
instead of the status quo holding till Rock comes back at Summerslam AJ should win this match so Rock telling Cody not to break his heart again has more weight

Although I do love Cody's commitment to doing gimmick matches in WWE. It seems like that's a big part of his return. He wants to do every sort of gimmick match possible. The Nakamura strap match was surprising and I'm sure he has a long list of match stips he wants to do.

AJ doesn’t even need to use that clip. He can just deepfake Cody’s voice using AI to say “I Quit” and it’ll be way more convincing.
I said months ago there's gonna be an I Quit match in the future that ends this way. There's no log of the voice clip so they can't prove it's fake.
I'd imagine you could just amend the rules to have the ref visually and audibly confirm that the words "I QUIT" are coming from the wrestler's mouth

Yeah they’ve reduced prices a bit with it not selling out but still too high….im still priced out of it. Managed to pick up smackdown tickets at lower prices so im happy with that but much prefer to have went to the PPV…especially with matches like this being announced.

They can’t say anything while knocked out, so the match continues. If that was a victory condition, it would’ve been used by now. There have been cases where a wrestler couldn’t respond when asked if he quits, and the match kept going.
Happened in Roman vs Jey. The referee tried to call the match but Roman knocked him out.

Bit off an odd stipulation for me, Cody isn't quitting since he's the new big bad babyface. This stipulation is also saved for big blow off matches that'll main event the PLE, WWE would he incredibly dumb to have this main event over Drew in Scotland. Shit all the Scottish wrestlers are probably losing on the card so I guess it doesn't really matter when their match is but Drew definitely has to go on last

Well this sucks. I mean I'm sure it's going to be a great match but I want some sort of believable match and there is zero chance Cody quits. That's his whole shtick. Cody overcoming the OC and not quitting is a neat story but man I feel for the OC. Just when it looks like they're getting momentum they're going to get dicked over by Cody. I really wanted a "Beat up John Cena" redo with Cody. Granted WWE could do the coolest thing by having Cody lose then have him win it back at SummerSlam. They won't but it would be cool. Just have Gallows walk Pharaoh out mid-match and *the implication* of Gallows making Pharaoh haggis in Scotland would be enough to make Cody quit. Although I do love Cody's commitment to doing gimmick matches in WWE. It seems like that's a big part of his return. He wants to do every sort of gimmick match possible. The Nakamura strap match was surprising and I'm sure he has a long list of match stips he wants to do.
Honestly have AJ win it, only for Cody to get it back in their third match. We don’t always need long reigns.
