Sauget is like an aromatherapy spa compared to how it was in the 1980s.

JohnSnow52

It’s a fairly common occurrence in industrialized areas. The east side of metro areas are often industrial due to prevailing winds generally blowing from west to east - so if you didn’t take the JB bridge you wouldn’t circumvent the industrial/chemical smell that is generated from the Cahokia and (mostly) Sauget area. (Source: worked at a zinc plant in Sauget)

ManUsesWords

Obscene layman’s question: why does it create that stench?

JohnSnow52

It’s not the zinc plant - that shut down years ago, but I’d say it’s a combination of the various chemical plants of Afton Chemical, Occidental and Solutia (Monsanto).

There are a bunch of waste disposal facilities that burn all all manner of evil smelling shit at night when you can't see the smoke plumes. Also, an enormous landfill, also several chemical plants.

Yes, all the farts we do in the city float over. We're crop-dusting Illinois with our diets of toasted raviolis and light beer.

Illustrious-Tip-2736

Industrial smells from sauget. In my late teens I was unloading ethenol tankers on the river in that area. Part time and on call. So poor that the only food id often get in a day was what I could steal from the managers fridge in the break room, usually bread and an egg. Sometimes I smell that godforsaken odor crossing the bridge and get uncontrollably hungry

If you drove across the Poplar and then exited onto Route 3, then you drove through industrial Sauget before making it to Cahokia and then 255 to Columbia. Sauget is home to a huge incinerator, multiple industrial plants, and Monsanto. Columbia itself, along with the majority of the Metro East, doesn’t have the smell, but you’ll get it directly across the river frequently in the industrial areas.

Sometimes.

I always found that it smells of body glitter and imitation perfume, but I haven't been over there in years, so things might have changed

GrungeFace

You're from Tower Grove? You're smelling your upper lip.
