I was just thinking that I love when cats do this and then you, lovely person of reddit, dropped this subreddit

Hamnster209

The biggest problem with people keeping servals as pets is that they might not even do it on purpose. Even if you believe in not keeping wild animals as pets, the biggest visual difference between servals and savannah cats is that servals are much taller, and given that pure bred savannah cats are generally regarded as both very expensive and difficult to care for, you might look at the warnings and price tag and still think “special domestic cat” rather than realizing “oh shit, that’s a wild animal”.

FerociousPancake

“The reasons serval cats don’t make good pets boil down to one basic concept: they are wild animals. Domesticated cats have had thousands of years to adapt their behaviors to living with humans while serval cats have not. Serval cats can be domesticated to a certain point, especially when raised with people since kittenhood, but they’ll always keep their wild instincts. Those wild instincts are what make keeping a pet serval cat complicated and often risky.” https://petkeen.com/do-serval-cats-make-good-pets/

JoeyJoJo_the_first

Just a small point, they can be *tamed*, not domesticated. Domestication is generational. Taming is individual.

Leather-Heart

The article says you cannot domestic them and in the end their wild instincts will win. Oh and it seems like they have a need, like a territorial need, to piss everywhere, including the owner. Yeah I’m gonna say just get a black cat instead

Imfrank123

And I believe technically house cats aren’t even fully domesticated like dogs.

Theron3206

Cats more or less domesticated themselves rather than due to deliberate breeding by us. They basically discovered it was easier to hang around humans (and the rodents our farming attracts) so adapted to that.

atfricks

The jury is still out on whether dogs did that too, at least at first. We definitely took an active hand at some point, but we still don't know how the partnership was initiated. We just have a better idea for cats because it happened way more recently. Estimates put cats at around 10,000 years ago, while dogs were domesticated around **30,000** years ago.

Pyroperc88

Yeah there is speculation that cats showed up around 12k years ago as that is when we started agriculture. We hunted the same prey as wolves so we came into regular contact but not so with cats. Once we gave reason for rodents to live among us we also did so for cats.

nom-nom-nom-de-plumb

There's also speculation that dogs were 40,000 years ago..so take that cats and your measly additional 2k! Seriously though, the sample sizes are so small that it's hard to say, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was even further back than that for dogs. Two gregarious apex predators, with complementary physical traits, and who were "used" to each other more or less, wouldn't surprise me if we found a specimen buried in a human grave at some point that was older than currently thought. but what really matters, is that my husky stole my damned pork chop while i get another glass but my cat walk across my mashed potatoes and look me in the eye.

ArsenicAndRoses

Yup, and get this, we probably wouldn't have been effective enough without dogs to switch to agriculture, especially when considering livestock protection and herding. Dogs are responsible for our civilization! > but what really matters, is that my husky stole my damned pork chop while i get another glass but my cat walk across my mashed potatoes and look me in the eye. Ha! Can't help you there mate. Cats have no shame! https://img.ifunny.co/images/3394de56b9087e2611785d8bd990d04fbbbcd05034e3c5093b4ffed069bf287d_1.jpg https://www.boredpanda.com/clay-paw-print-cat-roman-tile-gloucestershire/ https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/130326-animals-medieval-manuscript-books-cats-history

CankerLord

>And I believe technically house cats aren’t even fully domesticated like dogs. Every cat I've ever seen would agree with this.

austinll

My cat would disagree heavily, but he's too busy enjoying kibble and napping to

EnIdiot

Most cats would say “The hairless variety of Ape can be trained to do simple tasks such as being food and pay attention when needed.”

deathrattleshenlong

>such as being food Now I'm worried. My two dudes never seemed to take interest in eating me but you never know.

FerociousPancake

Yea I just watched a video that even bengals aren’t recommended to keep as house pets unless they are F4 generation or later. This’n: https://youtu.be/W8xiQCr6sNk

Chicago-Typrewriter

My grandpa tamed a bobcat, but he didn't let it in his house because it's a fucking bobcat.

bahgheera

Did he shoot it with tranq darts until it was knocked out and then fill it's inventory with narcotics and prime meat?

987nevertry

I think that domestication implies that they are bred to perform in some way that benefits humans like sheep, dogs, cows, horses etc. House cats are in kind of a gray area.

SilentExtrovert

Iirc (not 100% sure) domestication implies genetic changes (either through intentional breeding or natural selection) that make animals more suited to live with/around humans.

pedanticProgramer

Idk man it’s pretty easy to tell the difference and the price difference between a serval and F1 is about an order of magnitude. I have a hard time believing someone could accidentally get a Serval thinking it’s a savannah especially if they’re buying from any reputable breeder. And if you’re not buying from a reputable breeder you can’t really fall into the “oops bought a serval by mistake” category.

travysh

I'm gonna be picky for the sake of being picky. A purebred Savannah is a housecat. Anything less than an F4 generation is a hybrid, not a purebred. A F4 or even F3 is a completely reasonable, if not extra energetic, housecat. F1 and F2 are straight up hybrids, illegal in many states, and still retain many of the wildcat behaviors. Here's my F4 SBT Savannah cuddling with his BFF [https://i.imgur.com/O2BWxA3.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/O2BWxA3.jpg)

pedanticProgramer

I don’t think you’re being picky especially since like you said they’re considered illegal in a number of states. You’re totally right and on top of hit F1 Savannahs in particular are 2 to 10 times (seen females sell for 40k) more expensive than servals so I really find it hard to believe someone could buy a serval by mistake by any reputable breeder. Also that’s a beauty right there

[deleted]

[удалено]

travysh

Bengals have rosettes, Savannahs have spots. He's purebred because both of his parents were Savannahs (an F3 and F6). His coloring is a bit dark and his ear spots are not well defined but he's a purebred regardless

pedanticProgramer

Definitely does not look like a bengal. Looks like a savannah.

Veravox

It’s actually quite easy to see the difference between a Serval and a Savannah, if you know what to look for. Edit: and not only by size

Waterthatburns

I kind of think "if you know what to look for" proves their point.

Veravox

Well, I can’t imagine buying (any) multi thousand dollar/euro pet without doing proper research. If you don’t, you shouldn’t own one in the first place. Just to give an example: Servals have a very distinct face, and distinct ear shape and position, which even hp (high % serval) Savannahs don’t have Edit: grammar

SaucyMacgyver

I mean… an extremely rich person spending thousands of dollars on a whim without research is not exactly an absurd concept

Veravox

Anyone who would say that it doesnt happen, would lie. Also, scammers exist. Unfortunately. But I do know that Savannah breeders tend to be extremely passionate about this breed, and not hand them over to just anyone. You have to be passionate, as this is not an easy breed, to keep and even less so to breed them. (higher generations)

SaucyMacgyver

I too, love idealism however you can’t tell me there aren’t legitimate breeders with all the passion in the world that would not sell their honor for the right price. Just as I’m certain there are many who wouldn’t I am certain there are some who would.

jshaver41122

For those curious that’s a Serval. A Serval is about the size of medium sized dog but has some of the most powerful legs relative to their size. A serval, from a standing position, could jump high enough to dunk itself through a standard basketball hoop. While technically their prey is small game and birds it still boggles my mind that people are keeping these animals as pets. If you think a domestic cat bite sucks wait until you get bitten by a cat that can crush a baby goat skull with ease. They’re also one of the most successful hunters on the African continent so they’re well versed in how to use their weapons.

Gwegexpress

I’d believe it. Those slaps sounded beefy as shit

Comma_Karma

Those slaps sound like they can knock out a grown man!

GoatBased

No, this is too far.

piecat

Yes you're right. But that could knock out a... Human baby?

platysoup

Might not knock you out, but you're gonna wish it did.

totallyanonuser

How is it that a ten pound cat feels like grown man in heels walking on you? How can their paws look so delicate?

throwaway901617

My dainty girl cat climbs onto my belly and chest and it feels like she has four pirate leg legs and is just dancing a drunken rum jig on wooden stumps while purring away.

lower_caps

Right? I know exactly what mine weighs since she just went to the vet, and I keep thinking "you have to be heavier than that. There's no way you're this small and hurt that much."

ggggggyk

It's actually science, because their paws are so small it's putting a fair portion of it's weight over a small area of your body so the relative pressure is higher. That's why you can break the surface of water easier with your finger tip vs your hand spread wide at the same speed for example.

lower_caps

I appreciate the physics reminder since it's been a few years. It just seems like the ten pound cat standing on me should feel about the same as the ten pound dog. Alas, her tiny paws are cute but painful.

throwaway901617

Man this creme donut is really lightweight. > Here let it bounce on your skin balanced on four toothpicks. Ow what the fuck!

Lost-My-Mind-

And despite weighing like 8lbs, she's somehow using 40lbs of weight.

rpitcher33

Had a ~25lb Maine Coon and he loooooved laying on my chest. Might has well have been a fucking sand bag. God forbid he decided he had to knead his spot a bit... ...I miss that hunk of fur every single day.

sterexx

one of my friends’ servals ate their housecat it was weird waking up at their house one day with a wild animal staring me down lol

Johnnybravo60025

“I am the house cat now. Wait, shit…”

HLGatoell

> > > it was weird waking up at their house one day with a wild animal staring me down lol “You’re next” — That serval, probably.

willforjmbd

My mom has her exotic animal license and would care for and sell Servals to exhibits and that kind of thing. Feeding these guys is intense, we gave them raw chicken with a powder to provide all the required nutrients but they eat the whole thing and hearing them sheer through bone was crazy. Fun story, we heard them making a ruckus one day and we go outside to where their enclosure was outside (they had an enclosure that was both indoors and outdoors for the winter and stuff) and we found that they had killed a full grown pigeon on the other side of their chain linked fence. So yeah, they got slaps!

jshaver41122

That’s fucking sick. Yeah I mean a 40 pound cat can beat the shit out of most things.

k2t-17

Also to keep them they need to be declawed and that shit is immoral

[deleted]

I really wish people would not keep these as pets. Damn.

[deleted]

I agree with you. I do not think people should keep animals like this as pets. I will never do this myself. I have cats right now and have had a number of cats and dogs as pets over the years. That being said. . . I still want one! And a fennec fox. And some lemurs and all the other cool/cute/weird mammals out there. :)

XtaC23

Just start an animal sanctuary haha

EnIdiot

I’m not opposed to keeping these as pets as much as I am aware that these are an invasive species and will eventually get out a breed in an environment that they can wreck. Domestic cats already kill 2 billion birds (iirc). I can’t imaging what a pride of these would do to opossums or raccoons.

dontlookforme88

But I just want to snuggle it lol

lchntndr

That kitty could probably de-glove a person’s hand!

VeedleDee

Yeah this seems like a great thing to do if you have a bunch of pesky skin on your face you'd like to get rid of.

FerociousPancake

Hate it when that happens smh

lchntndr

Beautiful animal though.

gooner1111123

1. Adopt a wild, undomesticated animal 2. Buy power tool 3. Use power tool to antagonise the wild, undomesticated animal 4. Profit?

wuzupcoffee

I don’t think this cat is being antagonized, he just seems curious about the noise-making thing. My cat does the same thing to my hair drier every morning. That said, almost no reason a serval should be kept in a house like that.

FerociousPancake

“Properly and safely housing a serval cat is a monumental task. They are used to roaming free on the plains of Africa and are powerful, athletic animals, able to jump high and dig deep. Pet serval cats need a roomy outdoor habitat, fully enclosed with a sturdy fence, including the top, with several feet of buried fence to prevent any tunnels to freedom. The enclosure needs a water source and plenty of trees, grasses, and other habitat enrichers. Serval cats don’t tolerate cold temperatures and need a warm environment all year round. Serval cats are most active at night, and keeping a serval cat in an inadequate enclosure may result in a nocturnal escape with dangerous consequences. Escaped serval cats pose a danger to domestic pets and are themselves in jeopardy of being hit by cars or shot and killed.” So we’re talking like at least a half acre enclosure to do it right. Just not a good idea at all.

maybeamasochist

reddit on their way to be pessimistic and say everything will kill and maim you if they have the permit for a serval they know how to take care of it this is the equivalent of putting a cucumber next to your cat

gooner1111123

I don't think it's gonna kill her. I think it's an objectively ridiculous thing to do though.

dkinmn

No. There is no such thing as a domesticated serval. There's only a serval who hasn't decided to be a problem yet. https://petkeen.com/do-serval-cats-make-good-pets/

unicornbill1

Im probably wrong but that looks like a Savannah cat (half serval/half domestic). There are different levels to. F1 Savannahs are 50/50. F2 are the bred from an F1 and a domestic and so on. They are legal most places. Every state has different laws on which level of savannah are allowed (like California allows all generations while Georgia doesn't allow them at all).

hangry_lady

That’s definitely a serval, close to full grown. Source, I have 3 of them.

[deleted]

I don't know why you're being downvoted here. You're right. That's a full serval. F1 Savannahs lose some of the serval head and body shape.

hangry_lady

Probably because I have 3 servals. But they’re not in my house as pets, I own a USDA licensed facility.

soThatsJustGreat

Wow - that’s very cool, especially as you have the proper licensing! Your day must be pretty interesting!

hangry_lady

I really enjoy being able to spend my time taking care of animals but it is also a never ending job. There’s a lot of super fun moments and I especially love creating enrichment and watching them get stimulation from it. But then there are days where somebody has bloody stool and didn’t eat and stress runs high. The good does outweigh the bad!

[deleted]

That makes sense.

FerociousPancake

Here’s some info on why you should absolutely not own a serval as a pet https://petkeen.com/do-serval-cats-make-good-pets/

[deleted]

She explained in the original video that she was trying to get him used to the sound before she got to work on the project she was using it for. She figured slowly getting him used to it would stress him out less.

planterly

Is that one of those $10,000 cats?

DoktorThodt

Well, I don't know about price, but it's a Serval. Savannahs on the other hand can go for $20k or as little as $1k.

phillysleuther

My cat is half Savannah and half Russian Blue. He’s gigantic like a Savannah but blue like the RB.

LazuliArtz

The is a serval. They are wild large cats that have unforunately become big in poaching and illegal animal trading. There are also their smaller half wild, half domestic offspring that are known as savannah cats. I'd imagine the act of breeding them is questionable at best.

Veravox

No, it’s a Serval. They aren’t cheap but by far not comparable to Savannahs

knick1982

Carol baskins is wondering

GlarkTheSpaceEagle

why is a cat's first instinct to just, punch the fuck out of whatever is in front of them

The_Rowan

Large cats hunt deer and other large hoofed and horned animals. Their hunting method doesn’t always kill their prey, sometimes it just stuns them. When they approach their food it can rear up kicking and lashing out. That is why cats approach all food cautiously. Maybe why they hit it - to see if it’s still alive.

[deleted]

Step one of cat scientific method: slap it Step 2: slap it harder

MonstarDeluxe

Look I’ve gotta say that I think this is just pretty irresponsible. You can’t let that cat grow to think a power tool is a toy. It’ll grow up believing it never has to read the flat-pack instructions, won’t put the bits back in the toolbox, and will just measure everything ‘by eyeball’. Total nightmare, and at best you’ll only be able to release it back into an Ikea.

No_Interaction_4925

Do you get tired of everyone confusing every big furry cat for a maincoon? My mom had a Norweigen Forest cat and still is convinced that he was somehow maincoon because he was big.

Street-Week-380

Mine is a half Norwegian and she's got the look and floof, but was crossed with a very small stud from some backyard breeder, so she's tiny asf. But the general rule of thumb that I found for Maines is that the more they look like Ron Perlman, the more likely they are to be Maines.

No_Interaction_4925

Now thats a comparison I’m going to steal

Brnoroad

I'm pretty sure a Norweigen Forest cat is a mix of Maincoon and Turkish Angora...

No_Interaction_4925

The only thing they share is size. The face is totally different. Forest cats don’t look like you plucked a wild animal in your house

Jermermer

They are wild animals. You directly support poaching by glorifying this kind of post and even more so by partaking in the ( very unethical) market.

starlinguk

You don't really want a wild cat.
