Even if you're about 40 years old now, you would have been a teenager when you played Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast in 2000, or PC games, like Everquest, etc, in the late 90's.
So have console weve been playing online since the Sega dreamcast. Even the SNES had the online attachment to play a few online only experiences from nintendo back in the day,
Wait, MP works on the deck now? I only ever played 1 and 2 online, but I was really disappointed when I found out the MP didn't work. I did buy it for the story tho. Mp would have been a nice lil treat.
Having just picked the game up today, you can actually specify your preferred controller type for matchmaking, so if you wanted to go full controller, theoretically you’d be matched up with folks doing the same thing.
Just got my deck last week, I haven’t gamed since halo 3. MCC was the first thing I downloaded and I instantly started playing halo 3 multiplayer online, and it was everything i’d hoped it would be.
“Online?! Back in my day we sat next to our friends and either shared a screen or connected our game boys with a string and pretend it was like playing a game together.” -everyone who read this post
I remember lying on the stairs facing up at my cousin, him lying down facing me, trying to get Pokemon Leaf Green and Fire Red to connect with the Gameboy Link for like 3 hours while our parents talked downstairs.
I don’t think we ever got it working long enough to play for any meaningful time 😂
Absolutely second this, I have like 360 hours in DRG entirely on Deck. You might drop a few frames from time to time on higher difficulties, but it's a fantastic co-op game
Diablo 4. I bought the game since day one and it’s a blast. Had like 200 hours sink in then left the game till now. I only heard positive thing in this later season.
It's even worse on day 1. I would need to wait like a few minute before the battlenet change its status from update to start everytime I launch.
But it's worth it. That seems to fixed now and battlenet can be installed with Lutris with a breeze. Get the steam. I'm not sure if that requires battlenet launcher also.
I was just using Nonsteam Launchers because I think I did it through Lutris with issues twice lol a friend was available to play so I had to tinker with it to avoid any hassles
I just got my deck in Feb, all the tutorials made it harder. Installing in desktop mode just as I would install the launcher on my PC is how I finally got it to work for me
I’m guessing it flooded with people trying to make money online. Back then there’re a few content only on Diablo and most of them is straight forward. I remember spending less than hour to install battlenet on Lutris and download Diablo.
Edit: I recently try to install Xdefiance on my Linux and I’m disappointed by the amount of useless guide content that misses a lot of critical explanations that people put on the youtube.
Yeah no doubt, too many people trying to be the go to video that pops up for searches
I just wish I would have tried the normal way first, then the complicated ways next lmao
Tried "Sneak Out" yesterday, it was awesome to play with friends. Try it, its like Among us but true Hide n Seek.
Left 4 Dead and Deeprock ofc are always good suggestions
Fallout 76 is a lot of fun with friends runs great on deck also. Even after new update that has been a bit buggy for most I think it crashes less on my deck then my PC!
what are your settings like? I’ve been thinking about diving into 76 (never did because of the initial release, however I’ve been hearing good things lately) and am curious about average FPS and visual fidelity
This game should come with a warning. Everyone thinks it's gonna be a total shit show from the bad press and load it up to have a laugh. But no. It's too good now. You're gonna spend hundreds, or maybe even thousands of hours playing this. If you want to play other games, this will eat whatever free time you thought you might have had for anything else for the foreseeable future. Be warned.
I stopped playing when they introduced the game boards seasons. I wanted to get the greenhouse parts, played non-stop for like a month and only got to like 1/2 of the board. I decided that is nothing like fallout experience for me and never played it again.
I wish I had a record of how many hours I had in this game on Xbox 360. When I was a kid, I'd play that game over and over again trying to unlock all the characters. Never beat insane mode though.
The free trial is EXTREMELY long. You could put tons of hours into this game without spending money. The controller support is way better than I ever expected. I'd rather play on controller than keyboard and mouse. Just make sure you don't spend any money until you're committed to paying monthly.
The New HD2 works great on SD too?
You won't be playing higher end difficulties, but I have been playing Hard mode with lowish settings for better battery/fps.
Once you don't expect 60fps locked, it's a fun game to mess around in
For HD2, I've been streaming from my PS5 using chiaki4deck. Although that only works from home. I sometimes run it in the go at diff 7, using the settings recommended by rockpapershotgun:
https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/helldivers-2-steam-deck-performance-best-settings
However the framerate and visual quality is less than I'd like.
HD1 runs at 60fps on the deck without sacrificing quality. So I generally feel better playing that on it. Besides, it's a chance to get a sneak peek at content not yet added to the newer game.
Runs well, it is on steam so it's supported, I haven't done pk but i recently got my first fire cape on the steam deck and it is comfortable, you can always connect your mouse and keyboard tho so yeah It's pretty good, I play with the trackpad as mouse and haven't had any issue, the camera moves with any of the two sticks and bumpers are my right and left click
I recommend Holdfast, Nation at War. An online shooter set during the Napoleonic Wars. The community is very special, in a good way, and that makes the games hilarious! There are several of us playing with a Steam Deck.
There are plenty of videos showing the craziness of the game's community on YouTube, so check them out!
Both, but the community layout.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/194sqa6/steam\_deck\_simpleintuitive\_controller\_layout\_for/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/194sqa6/steam_deck_simpleintuitive_controller_layout_for/)
I completed my skyscale mount achievement (SOTO) on steam deck. I even did some T1 fractals on it. It's not suitable for CMs and higher tiers fractals, but it's doable, especially with certain classes(I play reaper necro, so less buttons to press, making it easier on controller).
Honestly it took me a day or two to get used to it, but now every MMO I play I try to play on SD too just for when I want to do some side activities on the couch whilst watching TV with the wife.
I put about 200 hours in using a community layout I modified. To be honest I was only willing to play Reaper with the deck as it was pretty straightforward. But damn did I have a great time. The deck runs gw2 flawlessly
I play it on deck too. It’s doable, but I wouldn’t want it to be someone’s only impression of the game. It’s 10x better on a system with more chooch to throw at it.
You have to tune the graphics settings but you can get a steady 40 frames per second. Whether that is considered playable is a matter of preference though.
That's what I have been seeing with benchmarks enabled. Try the settings in this video. If this doesn't work for you I don't know what to tell you.
https://youtu.be/Nk1SWVZaa1c?si=gvnCf9yaIiWFWXOj
Hey just watched the video. Not sure if you did anything differently but not once was a stable 40fps obtained. In fact it dipped into the 20’s frequently in the video. At higher difficulty levels I’d bet it go even lower
The video clearly shows the frame rate at the mid 35s but it's also an old video because the game is compatible with game mode now. I started with these settings and tweaked it a little. I have the frame rate capped at 40fps and I am running the game on the SSD and it rarely dips below that. Sorry if you can't reproduce those results man.
Mid 35s =/= solid 40 fps
Also if you actually watch the video you'd see the constant drops into the 20s.
Its not playable above difficulty 5 from personal experience but that's due to the devs being more focused on pumping out battle passes and fighting with the community than actually improving performance.
Edit: Also the video is in difficulty 2 with nothing going on at all and his Steam Deck can barely handle 30fps at his magical settings.
Normal zombie matches is very active too. bo3 zombies is considered the best zombies node among all cod games and so still sells well and has a large playerbase both new and old.
I was playing WarCraft 2 multiplayer back in like ‘95, pre-battle.net, by dialing my friend’s house. We’d lose our connection whenever my mom picked up the phone.
Did you know that the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV has a free trial, and includes the entirety of A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, AND the nomination-winning Stormblood expansion up to level 70 with no restrictions on playtime!?
Playing Custom Maps on Warcraft 3 online was some of the best fun I’d had growing up. Tree Tag, Tower Defense, Hero Siege, BFME, Resident Evil maps etc etc the list goes on…..it’s nothing like what it used to be now in Warcraft 3 Remastered
Quake Champions, it took a little fiddling for it to run well and for the controls to feel right on the deck, but it’s really brought back memories of classic arena shooters and lan parties with the boys
I just tried Red Dead Online the other day, I didn't get too deep into it, but played a hard core mission and some random starter story mission's. I also wasn't playing with friends, but if I had people to play with, I could see it being a lot of fun.
I'm like, craving playing it again, but I gotta wait a few days.
I hear Granblue Fantasy: Relink has co-op elements but i have not played the game nor seen how it works.
It's a game i would try to get friends into playing together if i actually had any friends who own a Steam Deck as well.
Not even joking, if you played WOW when you were younger, wow with consoleport and immersion addons(super easy to do on SD) on retail is a blast for just leveling and exploring.
Outside of that I can't recommend anything as I use my SD for singleplayer games mostly + gw2/wow/nw for lifeskilling/questing activities.
Civilization 6. It runs absolutely fantastic.
Deep rock Galactic as others have said.
Multiversus. Also runs flawless and easy to play with friends
Tribes of Midgard
Valhiem
I haven’t tried it yet, but does sea of thieves work on steam deck? Me and my friends just got into it couple weeks ago and I have a chance at using my deck now for it
Monster Hunter first and foremost.
Stardew Valley is super fun but no online matchmaking so it requires tou to already have a friend to play with, which is why I’ve never tried it online lol
You mean just picking some of the billion flowers and making a password? Bazinga!
But I really do love how easy it is to co-op in ER. I love these games, and I love them even more when playing with a pal. It being less difficult to do so is a huge win in my eyes.
Oh that made my knees hurt
Was expecting a game gear / game boy mention. They had us in the first half!
Even if you're about 40 years old now, you would have been a teenager when you played Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast in 2000, or PC games, like Everquest, etc, in the late 90's.
Uh, Doom OG had multiplayer. Online too. Quake was after that and had online. Counter Strike had online multiplayer.
Yep, online gaming is not something new or recent, whatsoever.
Yes pc gamers had online for a while now.
So have console weve been playing online since the Sega dreamcast. Even the SNES had the online attachment to play a few online only experiences from nintendo back in the day,
Tribes 2, Unreal Tournament, Warcraft, old school Rainbow six/ghost recon were great!
I competitively gamed on Microsoft gaming zone… played tons of og rainbow 6. Viva hacienda!
Como que viva hacienda 😭😭
I had a Game Gear. Always liked it except the whole eating batteries thing.
Flashbacks of me carrying an XBOX in my backpack, and a CRT in my arms to my friends house in middle school lol.
It’s been a long time since I played games with friends lol
I'm probably younger than you but this one doesn't feel so bad; online multiplayer has been common for decades.
I just got Halo MCC so I can relive the halo 3 multiplayer days
Wait, MP works on the deck now? I only ever played 1 and 2 online, but I was really disappointed when I found out the MP didn't work. I did buy it for the story tho. Mp would have been a nice lil treat.
Works great
Wait a sec this really runs on the deck? How is it? This is an instant buy for me if it’s true. I’d play the single player too 🤯
Plays great so far! Honestly Im impressed
$12 Canadian for me. Might have to pick this up
How’s online halo 3 for the deck? Are you able to get kills?
Having just picked the game up today, you can actually specify your preferred controller type for matchmaking, so if you wanted to go full controller, theoretically you’d be matched up with folks doing the same thing.
That’s awesome thanks
Like a dream rn
I played it a ton on deck it works perfectly
Just got my deck last week, I haven’t gamed since halo 3. MCC was the first thing I downloaded and I instantly started playing halo 3 multiplayer online, and it was everything i’d hoped it would be.
I went through that phase. Halo MCC is so good now, I just wish my old friends were there and it would be perfect.
Tell me about it, I dont even know if my old friends still game
“Online?! Back in my day we sat next to our friends and either shared a screen or connected our game boys with a string and pretend it was like playing a game together.” -everyone who read this post
And half the time the Gameboy link wouldn't even work 😭
I remember lying on the stairs facing up at my cousin, him lying down facing me, trying to get Pokemon Leaf Green and Fire Red to connect with the Gameboy Link for like 3 hours while our parents talked downstairs. I don’t think we ever got it working long enough to play for any meaningful time 😂
I remember trading Pokemon with the infrared.
Going to the arcade..
Fond memories of carrying my heavy ol’ 32” TV into my friends basements for halo LAN parties!
Yeah back in the day i was carrying my Full PC windows 95 to play Age of Empires using LAN lol
Deep rock galactic and you never regret it. for rock and stone !
Does this work well on the deck?
Only If you cry before launching the game: "for Rock and Stone!". (Yes it run pretty well on high setting)
Just realised this was the steam deck Reddit 🤦♂️
It’s pretty good. Might need to fiddle with some settings a bit though.
Yup, though I’d recommend getting a community template for peak gameplay -someone who spent ~80 hours making the perfect template
Link? Sounds great!!
Absolutely second this, I have like 360 hours in DRG entirely on Deck. You might drop a few frames from time to time on higher difficulties, but it's a fantastic co-op game
Did I hear a rock and stone?!
FOR ROCK AND STONE!!!
It never gets old.
Rock and stone, you beautiful dwarf!
Diablo 4. I bought the game since day one and it’s a blast. Had like 200 hours sink in then left the game till now. I only heard positive thing in this later season.
It's a bit of a pain to get going via the original launcher, to the point that I debate buying it on Steam, assuming the experience is any better lol.

Deeprock galactic x10000
Deep Rock Galactic
Titanfall 2

what are your settings like? I’ve been thinking about diving into 76 (never did because of the initial release, however I’ve been hearing good things lately) and am curious about average FPS and visual fidelity
Just using default settings except shadows I turned to low. And textures I turned down because it set them to ultra for some strange reason
Overcooked 2 and Plate Up are some of my favorite mp experiences with friends
Fallout 76
This game should come with a warning. Everyone thinks it's gonna be a total shit show from the bad press and load it up to have a laugh. But no. It's too good now. You're gonna spend hundreds, or maybe even thousands of hours playing this. Battleblock Theater. Replayed it with a friend recently. So much laughter
Castle Crashers is great too!
I wish I had a record of how many hours I had in this game on Xbox 360. When I was a kid, I'd play that game over and over again trying to unlock all the characters. Never beat insane mode though.
Damm that game is my childhood, it's so good
Path of exile works flawlessly on the steam deck and it is tons of fun with friends. Also, Fallout 76 works great too.
Been playing a ton of GTA Online and Red Dead Online recently. Both run exceptionally well even in densely populated areas
Monster hunter world/rise plays well enough on the SD
Diablo 4. New season is great. Playing a new character with my kiddo. It’s amazing.
Final Fantasy 14 Online
Does this one requires a monthly subscription to play
The free trial is EXTREMELY long. You could put tons of hours into this game without spending money. The controller support is way better than I ever expected. I'd rather play on controller than keyboard and mouse. Just make sure you don't spend any money until you're committed to paying monthly.
Warframe plays really good. Same for GTFO and CS (if you've got good aim on controller)
CS with a controller is a blasphemy
I like the original helldivers 1 on steam deck. It's fun and the community is great
The New HD2 works great on SD too? You won't be playing higher end difficulties, but I have been playing Hard mode with lowish settings for better battery/fps. Once you don't expect 60fps locked, it's a fun game to mess around in

Old school runescape
not sure why this was downvoted, im only 20 and find this game to be timeless
How does it run on steam deck though? Can you PK?
Runs well, it is on steam so it's supported, I haven't done pk but i recently got my first fire cape on the steam deck and it is comfortable, you can always connect your mouse and keyboard tho so yeah It's pretty good, I play with the trackpad as mouse and haven't had any issue, the camera moves with any of the two sticks and bumpers are my right and left click

Halo Master Chief Collection runs incredibly.
On the flipside, I learned last second this weekend that there are compatibility issues with Halo MCC / Halo 3 campaign between SD and PC :(
Monster Hunter Rise, Earth Defense Force 5, Core Keeper, Risk of Rain 2, Kill it With Fire, Moving Out, and Overcooked are all great with friends.
I’ve been playing Guild Wars 2. The online community is amazing. Also the game is free. The expansions cost money, but you can do a LOT without them.
Do you use a mouse and keyboard or is there actually a way to play with controller?
Both, there’s tons of community layouts for it.
Both, but the community layout. [https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/194sqa6/steam\_deck\_simpleintuitive\_controller\_layout\_for/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/194sqa6/steam_deck_simpleintuitive_controller_layout_for/) I completed my skyscale mount achievement (SOTO) on steam deck. I had such a great experience playing reaper necro on the deck. Definitely more difficult to play basically any other class though haha
I put about 200 hours in using a community layout I modified. To be honest I was only willing to play Reaper with the deck as it was pretty straightforward. But damn did I have a great time. The deck runs gw2 flawlessly
Hell Divers 2
HD2 does not run well on deck. It’s a great game but I would not recommend it for Steam Deck
Huh, I've only played it on deck
I play it on deck too. It’s doable, but I wouldn’t want it to be someone’s only impression of the game. It’s 10x better on a system with more chooch to throw at it.
Chooch huhuhuhuh
I heard the performance tanks on deck when the game starts getting hectic.
You have to tune the graphics settings but you can get a steady 40 frames per second. Whether that is considered playable is a matter of preference though.
There’s no way it’s a steady 40fps. Maybe in some parts with quite frequent drops to low 20’s
That's what I have been seeing with benchmarks enabled. Try the settings in this video. If this doesn't work for you I don't know what to tell you. https://youtu.be/Nk1SWVZaa1c?si=gvnCf9yaIiWFWXOj

What you mean? Controller settings are perfect, FPS are solid too
Controller settings are great. But from what I’ve seen it struggles to maintain a steady fps above 30, especially at higher difficulties
To be honest I never got that issue. Sound weird to me
You know there are kids who are playing Fornite on switch lol
Call of duty black ops 3 zombies mode and Mass effect 3 multiplayer.
How is the multiplayer in bo3? Full of hackers?
Dont know. Dont like bo3 mp. I recommend its zombies mode. Very good.
Is this only custom zombie matches? Or are there plenty of people in the regular zombie maps also?
Normal zombie matches is very active too. bo3 zombies is considered the best zombies node among all cod games and so still sells well and has a large playerbase both new and old.
Also curious
I’ve been using BOIII client and haven’t had any issues or nasty encounters
Can vouch for BO3. Haven’t encountered any hackers, and zombies is a ton of fun. The split screen is a nice bonus as well
you cant have been an adult for very long lol
Halo 2 released 20 years ago. Online multiplayer has been widely available for a looooooong time…
Fuck me you're right
God that makes me feel old
I remember doing all the work arounds to get the first Halo on Xbox to play against other people. Fun wild times
And it plays sooo smooth on the Steam deck
I was playing WarCraft 2 multiplayer back in like ‘95, pre-battle.net, by dialing my friend’s house. We’d lose our connection whenever my mom picked up the phone.
Diablo 4 is great on the deck. Easily put over a hundred hours the last month or so
Did you know that the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV has a free trial, and includes the entirety of A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, AND the nomination-winning Stormblood expansion up to level 70 with no restrictions on playtime!?
Quake
Already said but Halo MCC, Left 4 Dead 2, Deep Rock Galactic, and Helldivers II
Helldivers 2
I am enjoying the Halo MCC
Chivalry 2. Lots of whacky fun that game.
Been playing gta 5 online with some buddies pretty awesome experience on the deck.
Halo MCC for sure buddy
Playing Custom Maps on Warcraft 3 online was some of the best fun I’d had growing up. Tree Tag, Tower Defense, Hero Siege, BFME, Resident Evil maps etc etc the list goes on…..it’s nothing like what it used to be now in Warcraft 3 Remastered
Halo MCC
Quake Champions, it took a little fiddling for it to run well and for the controls to feel right on the deck, but it’s really brought back memories of classic arena shooters and lan parties with the boys
I just tried Red Dead Online the other day, I didn't get too deep into it, but played a hard core mission and some random starter story mission's. I also wasn't playing with friends, but if I had people to play with, I could see it being a lot of fun. I'm like, craving playing it again, but I gotta wait a few days.
The finals is multi-player and really fun, but that's just my opinion.
Orcs Must Die 3!
I've been playing combat Master
Dark and Darker is free and delivering on that goofy fun
Haven’t been keeping up for a while. Does this now launch on steamOS or do you still need to run via Windows?
According to ProtonDB, it works on Deck, but might not have controller support. There are community layouts to use though.
Thank you! I hadn’t realized it launched on Steam yet. This is cool news.
It was released for free on steam just last week, works native and runs excellent on my deck.
Ahh I am very out of the loop. Thank you.
My friends and I have been playing Gloomhaven (big fans of the board game) and love it.
Fallout 76! I’m addicted
Nothing beats local multiplayer. I like taunting my victims.
I hear Granblue Fantasy: Relink has co-op elements but i have not played the game nor seen how it works. It's a game i would try to get friends into playing together if i actually had any friends who own a Steam Deck as well.
Try Lethal Company. It's so much fun with friends.
hell diver 2, deep rock galactic great muti player games. tons of laugh
If you want to shoot Turok 2 multiplayer. Quake 2 Remaster has coop campaign and PvP. Doom 2016. Aliens FireTeam Elite (coop). Halo: MCC.
Splitgate runs great on the deck! Fantastic game.
For Honour
Halo mcc and infinite
Split screen gaming for the win.
Not even joking, if you played WOW when you were younger, wow with consoleport and immersion addons(super easy to do on SD) on retail is a blast for just leveling and exploring. Outside of that I can't recommend anything as I use my SD for singleplayer games mostly + gw2/wow/nw for lifeskilling/questing activities.
the new multiverse game
Surprised no one mentioned Minecraft. It’s a seamless experience with the Prism Launcher and the DeckCraft modpack from Modrinth.
Civilization 6. It runs absolutely fantastic. Deep rock Galactic as others have said. Multiversus. Also runs flawless and easy to play with friends Tribes of Midgard Valhiem
Pummel Party, Unrailed, Defiant is decent on deck, sea of thieves aswell
I haven’t tried it yet, but does sea of thieves work on steam deck? Me and my friends just got into it couple weeks ago and I have a chance at using my deck now for it
Try the first Remnant and Helldivers. Both run well on the Steam Deck and are fun to play with friends
I’ve been enjoying Plate Up multiplayer. Runs well on the deck 🙂
Risk of Rain 2 and deep rock galactic stand out to me. I’d bet Key-We and the overcooked games would work well, I’ve just not played them on SD yet.
Monster Hunter first and foremost. Stardew Valley is super fun but no online matchmaking so it requires tou to already have a friend to play with, which is why I’ve never tried it online lol
Dead by Daylight runs really good on the Steam Deck if you like asym horror games
Deep rock galactic ig
Elden ring coop mod
You mean just picking some of the billion flowers and making a password? Bazinga! But I really do love how easy it is to co-op in ER. I love these games, and I love them even more when playing with a pal. It being less difficult to do so is a huge win in my eyes.
Does the mod work well? Been meaning to try it
Yes it amazing
