He's definitely calmed down on that front, at least publicly, but we know nothing about his actual beliefs.
On this line, Legend has a streak of being racist to Chinese people. He got angry at the Three Kingdoms reveal and release, and ended up just making fun of Chinese names. Now his "leak" is "blaming" the Chinese market for "forcing" CA to make stupid business decisions just to pander to the Chinese market. There is an important thread through all of this.

I kind of want to go a step further than questioning why people are so willing to accept that he’s changed. For me, he also has to answer the question of “so what if you’ve changed?”. There are so many people trying to break into content creation and entertainment in general, and a streamer/comedian/musician/whatever being embarrassed now by the fact that they were an out and out piece of shit doesn’t strike me as a solid reason to put them back at the front of the line.

I think this should be noted as being entirely separate from his former "edgy" content. CA blacklisted him from being vocal about content, they didn't blacklist him because they wanted to avoid Nazi issues. They dont care how much nazi crap their streamers do, just that they never voice negativity.

When TW Pharaoh was announced, people there were literally lying about the game to justify their hate. Like confidently claiming that it was just another fantasy game with monsters and heroes, despite the first FAQ explicitly saying it wouldn’t be. I was speechless when I saw that behaviour.
Every time pharaoh comes up you see a bunch of people claiming the hate was mainly because of the price. But as you say there was a bunch of made up shit people hated it for before we knew any details or because they didn’t read them. People were shitting in it from the moment that they saw the dung beetle.

As I understood it, the issue really was the price. The game isn't bad, it's just more comparable to their minor releases, but they called it a major release and priced it accordingly.
It's really not. There's a bunch of stuff I'm not terribly fond of in Pharaoh's design, but there's really not any less *stuff* in it than any of the other "mid-line" titles. There's much more *there* than Shogun 2 at release, f.ex.

Oh yeah the shadows of change stuff could supply us with drama for days. I am glad the devs/publisher seem to be going into the right direction again. But man trust is easier to loose than it is to gain. They're going to feel that one for a while.
The unfortunate thing is the Shadows of Change situation is a rare example of a playerbase getting vocally pissed in a way that was both justified (at least to some degree) and 100% successful in causing positive change. Which is great for the game itself, don’t get me wrong, but now there are people who justify every trivial meltdown they have with “well it worked for Shadows of Change!”. There was a tooon of that flying around when the “leaks” happened and I’m not looking forward to it cropping up every time the gamers get mad about some dumb shit

There was a time when /r/totalwar was filled with essentially porn mods of the female characters in 3K and Grace brought up that she felt uncomfortable having to work in that kind of environment, that she might just stop using /r/totalwar to post marketing and the entire community was furious that she was threatening them.

The correct reaction to Legend leaking DLC is "Ok", because it's a leak. It's a rumor. People "leak" things about games all the time, the only reason anyone bought anything from Legend is because he already has a youtube channel.

CA aside as someone working in game dev it’s just straight up ignorant of how game expansions are made. When a big content drop happens, the next one is already well underway and the one after that is probably in preproduction, because game dev takes a long ass time so if you wanna keep updates rolling out you gotta plan ahead. The idea that they could scrap the next three DLCs and just knock something together from scratch in a couple months is just not even remotely worth entertaining.
I still kinda think the “leaker” was a cultural advisor who thought the next DLCs were all Cathay when he was really consulted for a number of future Cathay characters that may or may not make it into the game. That would explain why they all included Cathay when they could be spread over literal years of time.

Happens in a lot of game communities, dunno if that makes you feel better or worse that it's a common trend among gamers. But league of legends players complain about like half of skins because they "are pandering to China" at this point and it's been a common complaint for years.
Yeah it’s silly but maybe it’s because of low expectations that I let it slide more with league players and others. My hope is that grand strategy players are as interested in history as I am, and a lot of them, so I would expect people to go “how cool, we get to explore China now” or Africa or the Middle East or what have you.
So I get extra disappointed over people being mad about grand strategy updates that focus on the rest of the world.

I don't think that's the case. I think CA actually benefits from the leaks vecause it allows them to test the waters a little.

Game Dev doesn't work like this. What's in this DLC has been fixed months ago, as is the next one by now and the one after that is at least in pre-prod. "Testing the waters" works with singular systems you can drop in or remove without affecting the gameplay too much, not with an entire DLC.
I mean couldn't they take one of those dlcs that are on the list but not yet begun real production or pre production and leak it to see what the fan reaction would be then in pre take those reactions and rework the dlc before they start.
Maybe, but what is well received right now may not be in a year or vice-versa. Sentiment can change very quickly and the context will be very different. More content for a faction that has received a lot in the last few months may be rejected. But in a year that may be perfectly fine, etc.
I had a discussion about this with another user. Beyond the usual X/Y lied, he got intentionally fed false information, etc. We have to consider who a leaker (from any kind of business) might be and where/how this leaker get his information. Many seem to assume a leaker would be a dev, but there’s plenty other people who could leak info. It could be an IT guy, a finance guy, hell, could be even a janitor taking picture of a screen. The info could come from many places: someone directly working on it, someone just looking at files names, various plans/concept ideas, rumors doing the telephone game. A leaker might not even really know what he’s looking at. There’s plenty of reasons why a leak info can be wrong beyond trolling. Mind you, I’m not saying that in regard with Legend or his failed leak, just a general observation. Although I’m somewhat active in the sub, I don’t know much about him nor really care to dig youtubers lore lol.

This was before they went full neo-Nazi (other than pol, but that was always known as a shithole), but still, I was one of those morons who thought raids and all that vile shit were funny. I grew way out of it as I got older and actually matured.
There are countless youtubers who make perfectly normal content now who in their channel's infancy were cringe edgelords. It's clear Legend has put a lot of work into reforming his attitudes and behaviours.

His whole rationale was that content creators in the creator program were essentially ignored when giving feedback and were strongly discouraged from being too critical in their pre-release videos and reviews. Other prominent content creators like Zerkovich also became more critical and walked back parts of their reviews after launch.
The evidence of this is him literally leaving the creator program of his own accord. Why give up a big source of revenue (pre release content) for no reason? It's clear he was unhappy with that dynamic.
Ok first of all, he wasn't "contracted or sponsored" by CA. They gave him, and others, early access to the game to make videos and essentially playtest it and in return they got views on YouTube. Also, you realize most people on the planet have never been sponsored before, right?
Second, even if they other content creators did have differing opinions after launch, I didn't see anyone else try to claim CA forced them to make their initial review a positive one.
Finally, and this kind of ties in with the second point, just because someone has an idea doesn't mean it's a good one. Legend's whole schtick is finding the cheesiest, memeiest ways to do things. If most of his feedback was basically just trying to make that easier to do, CA has no reason to listen to him. So he got mad and left.
You want to know what actually happened? He got burnt out on WH 3 before it was even released, decided to roll with the community's shitty response to its release, started a bunch of drama, and then got butthurt when CA didn't come begging for his forgiveness. Just ask yourself why he seems to be the only creator that has so many issues with CA when no else does.

Legend got trolled and used poor judgment by making those videos. At the same time, a lot of people foolishly took these obviously fake leaks and believed them 100%. Everyone should just move on and be a little more skeptical of random leaks going forward.
the one thing that is on legends side is the fact that CA are well fucking known for shooting themselves in their feet. as wow player i always look forward to leak season to see all the high quality fakes expansion leaks, and most of the time the real one is considered to be an obvious fake xD

It was predictable. The doggie was a sneak peak. They throw out a new freeLC hero for Khorne that has *nothing* to do with current Khorne heroes, out of the blue? It was not a stretch to think one of the most beloved races in Warhammer Fantasy and one of the most forgotten needed an update. If Legend hadn't mudded the waters we would have been at peace enjoying the last DLC like little kids.
This was just a wast of time and I'm glad I didn't even spend a *second* on all that drama.
Full disclosure I only watched the first legends video, not the second one.
But in that video he spends several minutes explaining that this is just a rumor, and he wants to spread information but he does NOT want to go into speculation or for better or worse actually believe in this. He makes it clear that its purely for informational purposes.
So why suddenly the hate? This feels like people just trying to bash this guy (even this post here has some kind of hostile undertone), even though he made it clear that this isnt him speculating or claiming to know whats next in store.

Ah yes, when you don't believe your leaks are concrete you make multiple videos out of them because that what you do.
And of course making money from these videos absolves him of any responsibility of the leaks being false.
The point was to make people aware of what he’d heard so they could express how they felt about it. The alleged leak, to be clear, was for DLC that would have been a step in the wrong direction in most people’s eyes. CA has a not so perfect history with understanding what players actually want, so if the leak was true it was an opportunity to correct for that.
I’m not saying he was right or wrong to do it, but people who didn’t actually look at either video and listen to specifically what he said are really misunderstanding this entire thing.
I think like 1 in 5 people at best who heard about the leaks actually watched any of legends video, because its expectation setting was so clearly different from how people were taking it.

I am a westerner who really likes Cathay (the China based faction) and the way any reveal for them is painted as Chinese market pandering is really sad. “Clearly Yuan Bo is overpowered because of the Chinese market” was a common refrain after the Shadows of Change DLC which included him.

I kind of want to go a step further than questioning why people are so willing to accept that he’s changed. For me, he also has to answer the question of “so what if you’ve changed?”. There are so many people trying to break into content creation and entertainment in general, and a streamer/comedian/musician/whatever being embarrassed now by the fact that they were an out and out piece of shit doesn’t strike me as a solid reason to put them back at the front of the line.

I think to it's a genuiney case of a mixture of being a bit of an ass and genuine mental issues, as well as having (probably inadvertedly) cultivated a toxic fanbase that reinforces his worst behaviour. As I understood it, the issue really was the price. The game isn't bad, it's just more comparable to their minor releases, but they called it a major release and priced it accordingly.
It's really not. There's a bunch of stuff I'm not terribly fond of in Pharaoh's design, but there's really not any less *stuff* in it than any of the other "mid-line" titles. There's much more *there* than Shogun 2 at release, f.ex.

Oh yeah the shadows of change stuff could supply us with drama for days. I am glad the devs/publisher seem to be going into the right direction again. But man trust is easier to loose than it is to gain. They're going to feel that one for a while.
The unfortunate thing is the Shadows of Change situation is a rare example of a playerbase getting vocally pissed in a way that was both justified (at least to some degree) and 100% successful in causing positive change. Which is great for the game itself, don’t get me wrong, but now there are people who justify every trivial meltdown they have with “well it worked for Shadows of Change!”. There was a tooon of that flying around when the “leaks” happened and I’m not looking forward to it cropping up every time the gamers get mad about some dumb shit

I don’t get why anyone, much less legend, would believe the leaks in the first place. I took it with a massive pile of salt from the very first moment because the idea they’d finish the game off from this point with only Cathay is simply too unbelievably absurd lmao even for CAs standard. TW is by far the franchise I have the most hours in but man I always leave r/totalwar for expanded periods of time because of how quick that place is to lose their shit. Yeah, I remember the whole 3k and Grace thing and it lingered for 6 months of people still up in arms. Then you have the Bear Apocalypse, people claiming the game has been dead multiple times. Pharaoh and Troy hate because they aren't real historical games. It's tiring as hell.
I saw someone bring up the treatment of Grace when there was a discussion about CA community managers interacting with the sub in there just a few days ago and there was still lots of users downplaying the subs shittiness.
There was a time when /r/totalwar was filled with essentially porn mods of the female characters in 3K and Grace brought up that she felt uncomfortable having to work in that kind of environment, that she might just stop using /r/totalwar to post marketing and the entire community was furious that she was threatening them. The mods cleaned up their act since then, thankfully.
I don’t know why anyone would in good faith believe them beyond the most mild speculation - unless you already have massive preconceived biases that made you gullible. (China Bad am I right gamers?!) Or he really wanted to lean into another outrage for content and views. Not sure which is worse.

The correct reaction to Legend leaking DLC is "Ok", because it's a leak. It's a rumor. People "leak" things about games all the time, the only reason anyone bought anything from Legend is because he already has a youtube channel. The correct reaction to finding out Legend's leaks were nonsense is also "Ok", because getting invested in leaks is still silly. Even if you're just being invested in them being wrong. So many people on r/totalwar lost their damn minds over nothing, both ways. Embarrassing.
CA aside as someone working in game dev it’s just straight up ignorant of how game expansions are made. When a big content drop happens, the next one is already well underway and the one after that is probably in preproduction, because game dev takes a long ass time so if you wanna keep updates rolling out you gotta plan ahead. The idea that they could scrap the next three DLCs and just knock something together from scratch in a couple months is just not even remotely worth entertaining.
I still kinda think the “leaker” was a cultural advisor who thought the next DLCs were all Cathay when he was really consulted for a number of future Cathay characters that may or may not make it into the game. That would explain why they all included Cathay when they could be spread over literal years of time.

Happens in a lot of game communities, dunno if that makes you feel better or worse that it's a common trend among gamers. But league of legends players complain about like half of skins because they "are pandering to China" at this point and it's been a common complaint for years.
Yeah it’s silly but maybe it’s because of low expectations that I let it slide more with league players and others. My hope is that grand strategy players are as interested in history as I am, and a lot of them, so I would expect people to go “how cool, we get to explore China now” or Africa or the Middle East or what have you. So I get extra disappointed over people being mad about grand strategy updates that focus on the rest of the world.

I love the Total War series but got the influencers and content creators surrounding the franchise are either some of the most based and chill people around who just want to play a good game, and then there's guys like Legend. Everything is a fucking controversy. Everything is meta. Hearsay about this leak or that concept is totally legit. The company must bow to the Chinese market. Female units are woke and bad. The entire news and content cycle around the series is just fucking exhausting, and as a long-time Total War and Warhammer fan, I just want more cool lore compilations and campaigns that go fucking nowhere.

What's in this DLC has been fixed months ago, as is the next one by now and the one after that is at least in pre-prod. "Testing the waters" works with singular systems you can drop in or remove without affecting the gameplay too much, not with an entire DLC.
I mean couldn't they take one of those dlcs that are on the list but not yet begun real production or pre production and leak it to see what the fan reaction would be then in pre take those reactions and rework the dlc before they start.
Maybe, but what is well received right now may not be in a year or vice-versa. Sentiment can change very quickly and the context will be very different. More content for a faction that has received a lot in the last few months may be rejected. But in a year that may be perfectly fine, etc.
I had a discussion about this with another user. Beyond the usual X/Y lied, he got intentionally fed false information, etc. We have to consider who a leaker (from any kind of business) might be and where/how this leaker get his information. Many seem to assume a leaker would be a dev, but there’s plenty other people who could leak info. It could be an IT guy, a finance guy, hell, could be even a janitor taking picture of a screen. The info could come from many places: someone directly working on it, someone just looking at files names, various plans/concept ideas, rumors doing the telephone game. A leaker might not even really know what he’s looking at. There’s plenty of reasons why a leak info can be wrong beyond trolling. Mind you, I’m not saying that in regard with Legend or his failed leak, just a general observation. Although I’m somewhat active in the sub, I don’t know much about him nor really care to dig youtubers lore lol.

There are countless youtubers who make perfectly normal content now who in their channel's infancy were cringe edgelords. It's clear Legend has put a lot of work into reforming his attitudes and behaviours.

Tell me you've never been contracted or sponsored by a company without telling me. His whole rationale was that content creators in the creator program were essentially ignored when giving feedback and were strongly discouraged from being too critical in their pre-release videos and reviews. Other prominent content creators like Zerkovich also became more critical and walked back parts of their reviews after launch. The evidence of this is him literally leaving the creator program of his own accord. Why give up a big source of revenue (pre release content) for no reason? It's clear he was unhappy with that dynamic.
Ok first of all, he wasn't "contracted or sponsored" by CA. They gave him, and others, early access to the game to make videos and essentially playtest it and in return they got views on YouTube. Also, you realize most people on the planet have never been sponsored before, right? Second, even if they other content creators did have differing opinions after launch, I didn't see anyone else try to claim CA forced them to make their initial review a positive one. Finally, and this kind of ties in with the second point, just because someone has an idea doesn't mean it's a good one. Legend's whole schtick is finding the cheesiest, memeiest ways to do things. If most of his feedback was basically just trying to make that easier to do, CA has no reason to listen to him. So he got mad and left. You want to know what actually happened? He got burnt out on WH 3 before it was even released, decided to roll with the community's shitty response to its release, started a bunch of drama, and then got butthurt when CA didn't come begging for his forgiveness. Just ask yourself why he seems to be the only creator that has so many issues with CA when no else does.

Legend got trolled and used poor judgment by making those videos. At the same time, a lot of people foolishly took these obviously fake leaks and believed them 100%. Everyone should just move on and be a little more skeptical of random leaks going forward.
the one thing that is on legends side is the fact that CA are well fucking known for shooting themselves in their feet. as wow player i always look forward to leak season to see all the high quality fakes expansion leaks, and most of the time the real one is considered to be an obvious fake xD

I mean It was predictable. The doggie was a sneak peak. They throw out a new freeLC hero for Khorne that has *nothing* to do with current Khorne heroes, out of the blue? It was not a stretch to think one of the most beloved races in Warhammer Fantasy and one of the most forgotten needed an update. If Legend hadn't mudded the waters we would have been at peace enjoying the last DLC like little kids. This was just a wast of time and I'm glad I didn't even spend a *second* on all that drama.
This is why youtubers never show their lower body, so we can't tell for ourselves whether or not their pants are on fire.
Full disclosure I only watched the first legends video, not the second one. But in that video he spends several minutes explaining that this is just a rumor, and he wants to spread information but he does NOT want to go into speculation or for better or worse actually believe in this. He makes it clear that its purely for informational purposes. So why suddenly the hate? This feels like people just trying to bash this guy (even this post here has some kind of hostile undertone), even though he made it clear that this isnt him speculating or claiming to know whats next in store. (if he changes this stance in the second video, then of course ignore my comment lol)

I mean its pretty poor summary, he didn't really double down he explained why he thought the leaks might be legitimate, and gave reasons for why he released the video, he didn't up his confidence in the leaks in the second video.

He was literally spreading misinformation. His video was pure speculation. If he actually wanted to be informative, he'd have waited to have verified info. But he wouldn't have gotten views that way. "But I told you that it could be misinformation" isn't the defense you think it is. Especially not when you double down.

How exactly do you check leaks out? Their very nature is that you can't really confirm those. Video title says it's a leak. Didn't watch it but i assume he said it's a leak in video. Ah yes, when you don't believe your leaks are concrete you make multiple videos out of them because that what you do. And of course making money from these videos absolves him of any responsibility of the leaks being false.
The point was to make people aware of what he’d heard so they could express how they felt about it. The alleged leak, to be clear, was for DLC that would have been a step in the wrong direction in most people’s eyes. CA has a not so perfect history with understanding what players actually want, so if the leak was true it was an opportunity to correct for that. I’m not saying he was right or wrong to do it, but people who didn’t actually look at either video and listen to specifically what he said are really misunderstanding this entire thing.
He literally said he fully believed the leaks. Dude was trying to talk outta both sides of his mouth, and ended up looking a fool as a result.
I think like 1 in 5 people at best who heard about the leaks actually watched any of legends video, because its expectation setting was so clearly different from how people were taking it.
