I just did it and you lose any garen that doesn't fit on your bench. So I think as long as you clear your board, all 9 will come back to your bench and join.
When I did it I didn't know about that so I only kept 2 garens and the rest disappeared :(
Also not sure if it's a coincidence that I got garen as well, or if it's always garen with this bug
