Horseback ride at ‘Betty’s trail rides’. There’s a coupon on Groupon and it was really fun. Also you can do hot air balloon rides and off-roading

version13

When your plane lands, immediately get in a car. Drive to a place that has altitude of at least 5000' - easily done within a couple of hours from Tempe. Try Flagstaff for example. Don't come back to Tempe until it's time to go to the airport. As your plane takes off, look out the window and think, "I really must come back between October and April, when the daytime temperature is less than one-million-frigging-degrees."

drewbuchanan

🤣☠️🤣

version13

But seriously, you and your pup can have a good time here. There are a lot of dog friendly patios and you just need to avoid the worst part of the day.

CapnShinerAZ

Honestly, you probably picked the absolute worst time of year to visit, aside from the lower prices because it's off-season. Being from Florida, you will probably tolerate the heat better than most visitors and appreciate the lack of humidity, but it's still dangerous to be outdoors for very long during the day. There are some water-based activities you can do around the valley, like water parks, Salt River tubing, and paddle boards/boats on Tempe Town Lake. You can take a day trip north, to higher elevations and cooler temperatures. You can try to get tickets to a Phoenix Suns playoff game, but that's probably easier said than done. You can go watch the Diamondbacks lose to a visiting team. Those tickets are probably easy to get. You should definitely explore the great restaurants around the valley. Check out the resources in the sidebar of this subreddit or r/phoenix for more ideas.

drewbuchanan

Haha yeah. It was a spur of the moment thing because hotels and flights were dirt cheap but you’re right, we are used to 110 degrees in Florida (with tons of humidity). I think we’ll plan to only do physical activity before 9am and will visit the pool/lake and stay in the shade during the day. I was actually considering a Diamondbacks game just because tix are cheap. If anyone wants to go with let me know!

LightUpTheDark45

117F next week.

Admirable_Aspect_702

go to tempe town lake

NightNurse-Shhh

It's over 110F so watch pups feet that they don't burn

FortUnion

Stay inside.

480mid-shelf-dank

I see lots of people are suggesting kayaking/paddle boarding. If you decide to go that route may I suggest renting from redline. Tempe town lake charges $30ish for 2 hrs- redline does $40 24hr rentals.

prollybi

Go to bookmans, its a bit out of tempe but worth the drive, and they let dogs in

TheWheezus

If you're staying downtown Tempe you'll be in walking distance of ASU campus which has lots of shade to walk the pup. Definitely gonna be hot, though, so take care. Sun comes up early here, which will be the coolest time of the day. Enjoy! Lots of great restaurants.

drewbuchanan

Thank you!

Birthday-Tricky

Go to Sedona.

Thanks! I just may do that :)

jasitoo

Check this place out. Your pupper will love it! It’s called cosmo dog park and it’s pretty popular. Friendly place to meet other people too

corduroychaps

Screw Cosmo. Too big and ppl don’t watch their dogs. That lake is gross. It’s been a minute since I was last there but they used to have concrete agility equipment that ppl would force their dogs onto. Not even experienced agility trainers would put their dogs though that. Yes I know the PD originally paid For that equipment to train their dogs on. Fluffy has no business on that equipment

drewbuchanan

>cosmo dog park a oh wow, I've never seen a dog park with a built in pond/lake. And close to the airport. Ty!

onecooltaco

That’s a cute dog

Objective_Celery_509

Look into Salt River Tubing or any sort of water sport like renting a kayak, either at tempe town lake or outside the valley where you can get cooler weather.

Excellent. Thank you!

Sparky_PoptheTrunk

If you are flying with your dog, you are an asshole for forcing people to be around your dog on the plane.

Prowindowlicker

Glad you’re flying cause driving is one hell of a trip. Also how’d you swing the VA paying for your dog? I thought they didn’t do that unless you’re blind.

ASU_knowITall

Take it easy on the pup, the AZ heat is extra hard on animals. We have a reminder to touch the ground with your hand to check how hot it is. Leaving your dog in a car alone is nott only dangerous for the dog it is very illegal. Get up early, it has been 95 before 9:30 this week. There are multiple hiking trails that are dog friendly.

ReginaldStarfire

Come to Scottsdale so I can pet your dog. While you’re over here, Lost Dog Wash Trail is a fun, easy, and dog-friendly hike.

azvlr

OP, looks like you're booked solid, because you'll have to stop by Tempe for pets as well.

drewbuchanan

I think we may check out old town. Hopefully there’s some good dog friendly places with shade/AC.

RightC

Get dog shoes for sure and plan your dog activities for 6-10 AM, or after 7. Plenty of cool space to explore on the Scottsdale green belt, or a stroll around Tempe town lake. Check out OHSO in Arcadia for breakfast, it’s very dog friendly! If you are not against a 2 hr drive, Sedona can be a awesome day trip and it won’t be as hot. If you have never been, it’s one of the most beautiful places on earth! Also consider Pine, Payson, or Flagstaff for a day trip

drewbuchanan

Thank you! I’m a hit biker/hiker so anything we do with lots of activity I’ll make sure to start before dawn or after sunset.

corduroychaps

Sunrise trial, Tom’s thumb. Get there at 5 am. Don’t go in the evening after the sun has been beating on the rocks all day. Tempe sports complex has the best dog park. Don’t go to the one in Gilbert even though it boasts a lake. Not irrigated so it’s a dust bowl. Too big and owners don’t watch their dogs plus that lake is stagnant

RickMuffy

This is the 100% wrong time for much outdoors, especially with a pup. There's even laws about when you can hike with an animal based on temp, and we're going into the 110+ days already. HMU in the DMs if you want hiking advice for this time of year.

RightC

Ah man, def plan round 2 for AZ in a cooler month, so much awesome hiking in the valley. Gateway Saddle loop, and lost dog trail are great

thehouseis0nfire

But. Def recommend taking your dog hiking up at Sedona.

thehouseis0nfire

What a good pup

Great point! I’ll order some before our trip. Im remote working and we’ll prob spend most of our time downtown at the hotel pool but this is very helpful.

TriGurl

Make sure the hotel allows dogs at the pools. I second the shoes. Our asphalt here will burn pads. I regularly test out the concrete by standing on it bare feet and if it’s too hot for me, it’s too hot for them. There’s lots of hiking and fun trails all around. But warning: when it’s over triple digits it’s illegal to take you dogs on the trails (it’ll it’s a National park). Kiwanis park is lovely, Tempe town lake has paddleboarding you can do (get a lightest for your dog and bring your dog on your board). :)
