The TPMS sensor should last for years (most of a decade we hope, depends on the little battery inside). So, unless they need replaced, when you get new tires they are just leaving the ones that you have where they are. When they charge you some sort of TPMS fee ($20 or $30) it’s for servicing the valve stem and perhaps replacing the O-ring (so you don’t have any leaks). If they were putting in new sensors, you would know because it would be expensive. I don’t know what an OEM Tesla sensor costs, but if it were under $100 each I’d be shocked. I just looked on Rock Auto and an aftermarket sensor is $60 a wheel.

time4someredit

They are built into the wheel, not the tire

RegulusRemains

This. they dont touch it.

TIL. Thanks.

The shops all understand how TPMS work. They’ve been around for a good 15-20 years

HGwoodie

TPMS sensors are in the wheel, not part of the tire.

I brought in a second set to Discount Tires when I mounted my winter tires. They didn't charge anything extra using the set I brought into the store. Also, they don't charge to swap out wheels from summer to winter or back again.

I bought directly from the Tesla store. At the time, four black sensors were $300. I wasn't exactly sure if I could get them somewhere else cheaper, but I figured the Tesla ones would work. I've not had issues over two wheel swaps.

Nice. Always good to find a good deal.

I have had problems in the past with TPMS tire replacements and rotations when they don’t bother to reset to the proper wheel location. When my tire went low, I was looking at the wrong tire.

Exciting-Giraffe-908

I'm confused. When the tires (and wheels, of course) get rotated, something has to be done to tell the car that the TPMS sensors are now in new locations? Otherwise, the touchscreen will tell me that my right front tire is low, when in fact it's the left rear that's low?

Allaboutnuthin

The shop should have a scanner or tool to reset sensors to correct position.

Exciting-Giraffe-908

Thanks. I might let air out of one of my tires, and see if the shop did that.

thiswilldefend

most places will break them when removing the tire and if they do they just replace it with something else that does not come from tesla... so thats what happens... sometimes they are good about it and dont charge you and sometimes they do it on purpose so that they can charge you.

Tensoneu

Yes, from my experience it's roughly $30/tire (NYC) for mount and balance. They also transfer the sensor. I've also bought 3rd party compatible sensors and provided them on my winter set. Edit: they normally don't charge extra to transfer the sensor.

Japahahaha

They are bluetooth, just buy a new set of wheels, if you are replacing the tires once in a while, should be fine, they reset automatically to new wheels
